Abstract:
The familiarity bred by the notoriety in its own times of Alfred Jarry's Ubu Roi has been accompanied by neglect for his other work, especially that which seems of peripheral interest to the theatre practitioner. In this article, Kimberly Jannarone argues that his earlier Caesar Antichrist falls into the unusual category of ‘a piece of theatre not intended for the stage’ – apparently unstageable, yet not a closet drama since, in Jarry's scrupulous care for its published form, he created his own ‘theatre of the book’, anticipating the later modernist use of collage while also demonstrating in words and pictures his ‘pataphysical’ interest in the dialectics of opposites. Kimberly Jannarone received her MFA and DFA from the Yale School of Drama, and is currently teaching in the Department of Theater Arts at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She wrote on ‘Puppetry and Pataphysics: Populism and the Ubu Cycle’, in NTQ67 (2001).

Abstract:
This article addresses the difficulty of establishing limits and categories between reality and fiction in the narrative work and the "writing of the self" by Boris Vian, in relation to the principles of the Pataphysics College to which he belongs. For this, through the concept of "autobiographical space" of Lejeune, which outlines and modifies in Moi aussi his theory previously exposed in the Pacte autobiographique, we will focus on the techniques of the language-universe that plays with the principle of identity through the pseudonyms, the self-citation and the novelistic transpositions of friends and acquaintances who, masked, are participants in the vicissitudes of their fictional world in which the borders between the lived and the imagined are blurred without ceasing.

Abstract:
Focusing on materiality of literary constraint as a heuristic program, the following dissertation offers an analysis of five major themes of Georges Perec’s A Void: the notion of “craftsmanship” governed by conscious rules, as opposed to Dadaist and surrealist explorations of chance or of the unconscious; the dignity granted to playfulness, even to “gratuitousness”, in line with pataphysical thought; the voluntary introduction of errors in the application of constraints, in other words the “clinamen”, whose origin is often mistakenly located in Life A User’s Manual; the genesis of A Void, whose study will shed new light on the link between lipogrammatic constraint and the writing of the self; lastly, the “sociological” application of constraint, whose heuristic function is reoriented towards the exploration of the world, in the context of Perec’s later experiments, which derive from the alphabetical structure of the novel without e. In this way, we will compare A Void with other Perecquian works and projects and introduce a historical perspective based on a reflection on several avant-garde movements of the twentieth century (Dada, Surrealism, Situationist International, Tel Quel, etc.), in order to demonstrate the radical originality of this novel based on the principles of the Oulipo
