WRAS at Georgia State assumed status as one of the nation’s leading college radio stations in the 1980s. Yet as this article reveals, participants confronted a crucial moment in the emergence of college radio’s role in the music industry and the emergence of alternative rock as they debated the station’s new format in 1979. While the format fight revealed the dynamics between DJs who preferred a sound that was familiar and palatable to a wide range of audiences versus those who wished to air less conventional, more adventurous rock music, the surrounding politics instead reveal the inseparabil

Abstract:
In Brooklyn, radio programs conducted by and for Haitian immigrants have been historically vital tools for those seeking information to survive both under an ideologically restrictive dictatorship and as newcomers in an unfamiliar country. These radio stations and their blend of news and culture programming served as sonic reminders of community, connecting them not just to current events in the United States, but also to news from their country of origin. Through interviews with staff members at three different kinds of radio stations—college-owned, subcarrier, and pirate—this essay explores the role of Haitian radio in community-building, activism, and citizenship for Haitians who arrived in the U.S. in the 1980s. These programs, which existed on the periphery of a competitive media market, embodied a virtual community for Haitians that superseded nation-state boundaries.

AbstractPurpose: This paper discusses the need for a corpus of Emirati traditional phrases and idioms in natural language processing (NLP) for the Gulf Emirati dialect and its potential applications in fields like voice recognition, machine translation, and sentiment analysis.Methodology: The researchers collected a corpus of more than 3000 traditional Emirati words and idioms by gathering data from several social media platforms, such as forums, YouTube, and Emirati radio stations. In addition, the researchers used the website scraping technologies to collect suitable resources, subsequently cleansing and organising the gathered material to ensure accuracy and consistency. A pilot investigation was undertaken, including an individual who is a native speaker of Emirati, in order to verify the precision of the dataset.Findings: The researchers successfully compiled a substantial dataset of traditional Emirati phrases and idioms, so enabling potential future investigations in the realm of Arabic dialects, specifically focusing on Gulf Arabic dialects such as the Emirati dialect.Implications: The compilation of Emirati traditional idioms and words presented in this study has potential practical effects in several domains such as medical, education, and business. These implications mostly revolve around enhancing communication among and with individuals proficient in the Emirati language.Originality/Value: This study distinguishes itself by concentrating on the compilation of an NLP corpus comprising traditional Emirati phrases and idioms, with a specific emphasis on the Gulf Emirati dialect. The dataset generated as a result of this effort may prove indispensable for further studies into Arabic dialects.

While working with the Lexington Tourist and Convention Commission, Jim Host began to network with individuals from the National Tour Brokers Association (NTBA). Eventually, he convinced the NTBA leadership (including Joe Casser and Arthur Tauck) to hire his company and allow him to serve as the organization’s executive director. In a short span of time, Host dramatically increased the NTBA’s membership and revenue. He then won the exclusive radio rights for the University of Kentucky’s basketball and football broadcasts. Host traversed the state, signing affiliate stations for the UK Radio Network. Within a few years, he had created the largest college sports radio network in the country, which included power stations WHAS and WCKY. Cawood Ledford was the voice of the network. While traveling with UK’s basketball team, Host learned that the NCAA outsourced its radio broadcasts for the Division I men’s basketball tournament. Host made an offer to Tom Jernstedt and Dave Cawood of the NCAA to take over the radio broadcasts, and NCAA executive director Walter Byers gave his approval. Host then started building the NCAA Radio Network.

Abstract:
Abstract On the evening of October 30, 1938, Orson Welles’s Mercury Theatre of the Air presented a radio dramatization of The War of the Worlds. The program, aired on the Columbia Broadcasting System, was structured in the form of a series of news reports. Only loosely adapted from H. G. Wells’s original story, it vividly described a Martian invasion of Grovers Mills, New Jersey. At four separate points in the broadcast CBS announced that “the entire story and all its incidents were fictitious.” Local stations also interrupted the show with similar disclaimers. Nonetheless, the day after Welles’s broadcast aired, newspaper accounts described “a tidal wave of terror” which had “swept the nation.” Reports told of terrified citizens who had fled their homes, weeping college students who had made farewell telephone calls to loved ones, and stout he’.lrted individuals who had volunteered to battle the hostile extraterrestrials. A study by social scientist Hadley Cantril concluded that over one million Americans had been frightened by the War of the Worlds broadcast. Welles issued a public apology for the panic sparked by his program, and the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission pronounced the whole affair “regrettable.”

Abstract This chapter uses freeform radio history to critique the current media studies research agenda focused on streaming platforms at the expense of alternatives. It argues that the freeform radio format’s affinities with hacker culture drove technological innovation in the late 1980s and early 1990s, during the pre-web era of Bulletin Board Systems and Gopher sites. In this period, the freeform format thrived in nonprofit college radio, mixing emerging and historical music genres. The final part of the chapter analyzes telephone and online distribution experiments at WFMU, a freeform station at Upsala College, New Jersey. Its volunteer engineers and online services they set up were embedded in WFMU’s analog mutual-aid networks of New York art and music scenes, national zines, and international tape exchange routes. This history provides a model of solidarity and survival for alternative media, crucial for the centralized music streaming present.

He left South Carolina and moved to Alabama to take a job at his alma mater, Talladega College. As editors of South Carolina two largest white newspapers, Thomas R. Waring, Jr., and William D. Abstract There was a program on a college radio station in Ithaca when I was living there in early 1991 which described itself as “Pure American folk from singers who defy labels;” and this self-contradictory statement can stand as the motto for this chapter, in which I will examine the role of labels in popular music and consider the seemingly inescapable use of generic categories in the organization of popular culture. These are so much a part of our everyday lives that we hardly notice their necessity—in the way bookshop shelves are laid out (novels distributed between romance, mystery, science fiction, horror, popular fiction, contemporary fiction, classics, and so on); in the way TV program guides classify the evening’s entertainment (sitcom, game show, talk show, crime series, documentary); in the ways films are advertised and videos shelved (comedy, Western, horror, musical, adventure, adult); in the way magazines are laid out at newsagents (women’s, children’s, hobby, general interest, fashion, computers, music).

With the development of the large nuclear power station and the vessel nuclear power plant, the steam-water separation performance should be more efficient under the condition of higher pressure, power load and circulating ratio. The droplet motion model, which is solved by typical four steps Runge-Kutta method and validated against the experimental results, is developed according to the physical phenome

Abstract:
Many spent fuels coming out of the nuclear power station are planned to be stored in the special site in Japan until they are reprocessed. In this site, the spent fuels are installed in a cylindrical container called canister. The canister, in tern, will be installed in the outer cylinder called cask that is a free-standing structure. When this system is subjected to strong seismic excitations, sliding or rocking motion will be induced. And, in the worst case, the cask may collide to each other or overturn. Therefore, it is very important to reduce sliding and rocking motions of the cask in or

Recent analyses of the UK National Space Strategy [1], Space Sector Skills Survey [2] and The 2020 Space Census [3], have investigated and highlighted many of the established strengths and weaknesses of the current UK Space Sector and the role of training and educational programs supporting it. Furthermore, there is additional research into what self-reported roadblocks early career students and workers (and employers) consider important in this journey [4]. Academia, employers, schools, colleges, and museums all have considerable roles to play in shaping the future science capital of our popu
