Views of college students ( N = 133) regarding excessive drinking were explored in terms of the amount of drinking which constitutes a drinking problem, the behaviors that indicate a student has been drinking excessively, and university alcohol policies that students would endorse. Students accepted levels of drinking by peers that markedly exceed definitions of excessive drinking by experts. A sizable minority of students refuse to label very dangerous behaviors associated with excessive drinking as indicating a drinking problem. The views of male and female students differed only marginally.

The general notion of a student debt “crisis” in the United States is rooted in misperceptions. The problems lie largely with students who leave school without a credential, with those who attend for-profit institutions, and with older adults returning to school—not with young, four-year college graduates.

An environmental learning community (LC) is presented as a working model that brings relevancy of higher education to first-year college students. The LC includes two primarily lecture courses—one in biology, one in economics—that have been specifically designed to focus on environmental issues from different perspectives. These courses share the same, first-year students. Each student researches an aspect of a particular environmental/health issue in Toms River, New Jersey, where there is a groundwater pollution problem that may be associated with a childhood cancer cluster found there. We show, through two principal components analyses, that multiple tests of the theories reduce to only two findings that cannot be interpreted as solid support for evolutionary hypotheses.
