Abstract:
Colombia is a country that has achieved significant tourism growth in recent years. However, there is limited empirical evidence about its tourism development. Organizational innovation in tourism enterprises is one of the keys to Colombia maintaining positive tourism development. This empirical study analyzes organizational innovation in 364 of Colombiás tourism companies. The findings show that “Directing and Management (The way of directing and managing company)” and “Commercialization and Sales (The way to directing and managing the commercialization and sales of a company)” have a significant relationship with Colombiás tourist enterprises organizational innovations.

Es texto interpreta la fundación de la Compañía Industrial de Samacá “Fábrica de Hilados y Tejidos de Algodón” en el municipio de Samacá (Boyacá-Colombia). El artículo rinde cuenta del proceso fundacional, considerado uno de los primeros antecedentes de la industria textil contemporánea en Colombia; analiza la dinámica interna de la empresa desde una perspectiva jurídica y administrativa, así como ofrece un enfoque sobre las posibles causales de su cierre. Finalmente, responde a la pregunta: ¿por qué el gobierno departamental boyacense no apoyó el proceso de industrialización de Boyacá a través de los textiles de Samacá? The article gives an account of the founding process, considered to be one of the first cases of the contemporary textile industry in Colombia; it analyzes the internal dynamic of the company from a jurisprudence and administrative perspective, in that way it offers a focus on the possible reasons related to its closing. Finally, the author responds to the question: Why did the departmental Boyacá government not support the process of industrialization of Boyacá through the textiles of Samacá? Abstract During the last time, the attention to a phenomenon of family business steadily grows. Today this form of business is considered to be a vital and needful for economic development. Despite this, the basic theory of family business is heterogeneous, limited and insufficient. The purpose of this paper is to define the sense of family company’s success. The object of research is family business as an economic phenomenon. There is a double subject of this study: firstly, to find out the main indicators and information resources about successful companies can be detected and, secondly, to analyze one representative family company managed by several generations as a case study for identifying its key success factors. This qualitative research was prepared on the basis of general theoretical scientific methods, in particular, analysis, synthesis, analogy, comparison, generalizations and methods of expert estimates. In the first phase, secondary research of scientific literature and electronic resources about the paper topic was conducted. On the base of that results, the primary research was conduct, which is based on analysis of family wine company Quinta de Santa Eufemia in Portugal. That research part has the form of a case study. Based on the received information, the key success factors were identified. The sources of that research are internet web-pages of the company, articles about the company in magazines and scientific journals form Emerald database, reports of the company and financial data from Amadeus database, in-depth interview with a family member of a family company representative. The scientific acquisition of this research is improving understanding of a family company’s success from the perspective of difficulties faced by a family company and the way of overcoming obstacles. The results of this study allowed to find a main point for the family company’s success based on literature review. In addition, the activity of Quinta de Santa Eufemia was analyzed as the case study for critical evidence of that phenomenon. This study has contributed to the theoretical part of family business research providing a significant step to providing insight the family company’s success and its main factors which influence an effective functioning of a family company. Purpose The concepts of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and their link to the United Nations sustainable development goals (UN SDGs) are increasingly important, however prior research on this topic is limited, especially in the hospitality industry. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to greater knowledge on the subject and determine how other hospitality organizations should move forward the two topics were researched using a framework relating to the triple-bottom-line concept with reference to case studies of three hospitality corporations – Hyatt Hotels Corporation, Scandic Hotels AB and the Walt Disney Company. Design/methodology/approach Most large hotel corporations now report their CSR activities on their corporate websites, which is the most accessible format to find information on activities, and so secondary research was conducted to draw on this. Additional secondary research was undertaken from October 2019 – May 2020 using a number of journal databases including Sage Journals, Emerald Journals, the E-library of the UNWTO and Taylor and Francis Academic Journals. Third-party sites were also leveraged including CSR-Hub, The United Nations and Forbes. Findings While all three corporations mention their efforts in relation to the sustainable development goals, commitment on what activities contribute to which goals was difficult to discern. Furthermore, while there are some activities that all three contribute to, there are many best practices that could be shared across the industry. Originality/value Though the research was limited to secondary sources, the topic is largely unresearched and has the potential to suggest best-practices available more widely across the industry.

Abstract:
Background:Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a life-threatening complication of systemic sclerosis (SSc), thought to be more commonly found in limited cutaneous (lcSSc) compared to diffuse (dcSSc) subset. Since lcSSc has a better prognosis, it is unclear whether a higher occurrence of PH in lcSSc reflects survival bias.Objectives:To compare the cumulative PH incidence in disease subsets, after accounting for death as a competing event, in a large multi-center SSc cohort.Methods:Cumulative incidence of PH was studied in 1431 Canadian Scleroderma Research Group (CSRG) database patients (57% lcSSc; follow-up 3.5±2.9 years, range 1-14) by Fine-Gray analysis, unadjusted and adjusted for sex, age and SSc-related autoantibodies (SAS 9.4). Survival curves, predictors of PH development and survival were analyzed by Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazards analyses (SPSS 25.0). Subgroup analysis was performed for PAH.Results:157 SSc patients had PH (including 117 PAH), either confirmed by RHC or postmortem. Compared to those without PH, lcSSc-PH patients had longer disease and older age at SSc diagnosis, while dcSSc-PH patients - more severe peripheral vascular and gastrointestinal involvement. The cumulative incidences of PH/PAH were similar in dcSSc and lcSSc after accounting for death in the adjusted competitive risk model (Table 1; Fig.1). 47% of PH- and 42% of PAH-patients died over a FU period. Male gender (p<0.0001) and anti-Scl-70 (p<0.001) were associated with earlier PH development, while older age (p=0.006) - with PAH (Table 2). ACA-negativity and older age predicted worse PH prognosis.Figure 1.Cumulative incidence curves for PH (A) and PAH (B).Conclusion:Cumulative incidence of PH, after accounting for death as competing event, was comparable in SSc subsets. Abstract:
A common characteristic of water utility and wastewater companies in developing countries is management problems and limited commercial vocation. In the biggest Latin American cities there is a level of infrastructure enough for providing a substantially better service than the one currently supplied to their badly served customers. For years decisions have moved between two extremes: public management – usually corrupted with playing politics and inefficiency problems, and privatization – sharply criticized by many, and which has shown tendencies to inequality that leave it far away from earning panacea status. This paper is intended to expose the advantages of a novel model in which a state-run company with commercial management problems, the EAAB, solves its limitations by keeping the ownership of its assets and successfully incorporating the participation of better practices from other specialized operators, one of which is a state-owned player, EEPPM. This scheme demonstrates how the service indicators of a system serving eight million inhabitants in the Colombian capital improved significantly with state-owned assets and private participation, without giving in to privatization pressures or stagnating in the usual inefficiency typical of public management in developing countries. This is proposed as a replicable experience that can be used in medium and large cities in other countries with similar management problems, with certain adjustments to fit the solution to the specific cases. This is also a practical case for conducting a comparison of competitiveness within a city, of interest for regulatory entities and investigators on the potential of comparative efficiency in a traditionally monopolistic industry.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze, in the Colombian developing context, the relationship between the presence of women in corporate positions and the financial performance of the company and to know if there are differences between family and non-family firms. Design/methodology/approach Building on the contingency theory of leadership, which emphasizes that leader’s personality and the situation in which that leader operates influences corporate decision-making, the authors use panel data models on a sample of 54 Colombian public businesses for the period 2008-2015 to test the proposed hypotheses on the relationship between women´s presence in corporate governance positions and financial performance, as well as the difference between family and non-family firms. Findings The results support that women´s presence in corporate governance positions is positively associated with firm performance. More concretely, the authors find a relationship between women at the top corporate governance structure (as part of the board of directors, top management team and chief executive officer) and firm profitability. Results also indicate that family business, as a type of organization, (negatively) moderates the positive relationship between female participation in top executive positions (board and top executive team) and firm performance. Research limitations/implications First, this study is limited to women in corporate positions in large companies listed on the Colombia Stock Exchange, and thus, generalizability for smaller entities may be limited. Second, data limitations do not allow us to investigate ways in which women’s presence in corporate governance structures contributes to improve firm goals. Practical implications The authors provide support to the hypothesis that positively relates women’s presence in corporate governance positions and firm performance for the case of Colombia. This serves as a guidance to Colombian regulators, corporate decision-makers and policy-makers to promote the inclusion of women in top hierarchical structures through either mandatory laws or recommendation. Originality/value Few studies have addressed the women´s presence in corporate governance positions and contribution to firm performance in developing economies. This study contributes to better understand how women impact performance in contexts where women are underrepresented in corporate governance structure and where there are no laws that pressure firms to appoint women in corporate governance positions.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine and introduce comprehensive insights into the field of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) by reviewing the existing literature and identifying the research gap. The state of LSS research is assessed by critically examining the field, along with a number of dimensions, including time horizon, year, journal and publisher, university, country, author, geographic analysis, research design, research affairs, research methods, tools/techniques used, focus industries, major research area, benefits gained by LSS, critical success factors and barriers of LSS implementation. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on a systematic literature review of 190 articles containing the word LSS in their title, which are published in a well-known database, such as Elsevier ScienceDirect, Taylor and Francis, Emerald Full Text, Springer Link, Wiley InterScience and Inderscience from January 2000 to September 2016. Findings This analysis reveals 15 significant dimensions to identify the state of LSS research. Authors find a noticeable rise in the attention of LSS research in the available literature. Major findings show that, the empirical research holds greater credibility. Statistics prove that the case study method scores the highest among all the research methods used in the discipline. The largest number of studies have investigated research issues related to implementation and process of LSS. The LSS uses a wide range of tools/techniques/methodologies: the choice of tools is situation-specific. Manufacturing and health-care sectors have been the focus of LSS research, but LSS has also been adopted by other types of industries. The organizations following LSS have improved bottom-line results, improved company profitability and growth and enhanced customer satisfaction. In general the research is more interpretive in nature; there is still a lack of standard in the LSS implementation framework. Research limitations/implications This study is limited to reviewing those articles which contain the word LSS appeared in the title. Originality/value This study will help understand the current state of research on LSS, various trends in the field, its applicability and future prospects of investigation in the field.

El propósito de este estudio es examinar como contribuyen los distintos tipos de riesgos (terrorismo, accidente, delincuencia, salud, catástrofes) a los que se enfrenta los turistas a la percepción de riesgo final sobre los destinos. Asimismo, el trabajo analiza el efecto moderador del destino en las relaciones causales establecidas entre los tipos de riesgos y el riesgo percibido. Para ello se comparan dos grupos de destinos: Europa (Islas Canarias, España) y Latinoamérica, con los destinos de Brasil y Colombia. El trabajo se realizó mediante encuestas online a través de una empresa especializada en los mercados potenciales de Alemania y Reino Unido. El análisis se llevó a cabo mediante un modelo de ecuaciones estructurales (SEM) para probar las relaciones causales planteadas. Aunque la percepción de seguridad y protección y su influencia en el comportamiento del turismo es importante para la promoción y gestión de las actividades turísticas, su análisis empírico ha recibido una atención limitada entre los investigadores. Los resultados de este trabajo muestran interesantes conclusiones prácticas y académicas para las organizaciones empresariales y la promoción de los destinos turísticos. The purpose of this study is to examine how the different types of risks (terrorism, accident, crime, health, catastrophes) that tourists face contributes to the perception of final risk on destinations. Likewise, the paper analyzes the moderating effect of destination in the causal relationships established between the types of risks and the perceived risk. For this, two groups of destinations are compared: Europe (Canary Islands, Spain) and Latin America, with the destinations of Brazil and Colombia. The work was carried out through online surveys through a company specialized in the potential markets of Germany and the United Kingdom. The analysis was carried out using a model of structural equations (SEM) to prove the causal relationships raised. Although the perception of safety and protection and its influence on the behavior of tourism is important for the promotion and management of tourism activities, its empirical analysis has received limited attention among researchers. The results of this work show interesting practical and academic conclusions for business organizations and the promotion of tourist destinations.

If corporate social responsibility (CSR) is expected to work efficiently, there should be a standardised approach for implementation of the CSR concept for all businesses, including companies operating in the energy sector. Although many companies declare compliance with CSR standards, further investigation should be undertaken to evaluate if and how those standards have been applied in practice. The aim of this research is to examine the level of standardisation of the CSR activities within Polish energy companies and explore the good practices developed by those companies. The Polish energy companies have been selected for the investigation as the literature review we conducted demonstrates that there is limited research in this area and there is a knowledge gap regarding how Polish energy companies apply CSR regulation in practice. To accomplish the stated aims, the following research questions were developed: (1) What is the essence of applying the CSR concept in Polish energy companies, and at what level of development is the concept applied? (2) To what extent do Polish energy companies have a common approach to the CSR concept, and in what areas are there differences? (3) To what extent have Polish energy companies applied global CSR standards and solutions? (4) Is there a gap between the declared measures of CSR and their actual implementation in Polish energy companies? The research methodology of this study is based on a systematic literature review of the sources acquired from databases such as ProQuest, Emerald, SCOPUS and the Jagiellonian University Library. The multiple case study approach was identified as the most suitable research tool. Companies for the study were selected according to their affiliation to the energy sector and listing on the main market of the Warsaw Stock Exchange. These two assumptions allowed us to base this study on the largest Polish energy companies that have international status. Six areas of CSR annual report disclosures have been identified and used for the investigation and analysis. This research looks at similarities and difference between these six aspects of CSRs disclosed by Polish energy companies. The investigation allows us to conclude that the top three energy companies use similar tools to build their CSR strategies: formalised CSR concept, published CSR reports, disclosure of CSR information on the company website, CSR related activities offered to stakeholders, obtained CSR certificates, and CSR awards. This indicates the existence of a standardised approach to CSR across Polish energy companies.
