Abstract:
The pandemic hit the Colombian economy as hard as other countries. Using a novel Business Pulse Survey, this paper tests the effect of government support and COVID-19 cases on firms performance. A one-standard-deviation increase in government support (in periods in which the pandemics intensity was average) increased the percentage of firms reporting normal operations by 4.8 percent. Political demonstrations in spring 2021, however, reduced the percentage by 13 percent each month they lasted. Firms' financial distress also counters the impact of government support, suggesting the need to ease

Abstract:
This paper studies the impact of extreme weather events on the local tax revenue across Colombian municipalities. We follow a two-step approach to evaluate to what extent a municipality’s tax revenue depends on natural disasters taking place both locally and in its trade partners. In the first step, we estimate a gravity model of bilateral trade and construct a trade flow matrix allowing us to measure the strength of the economic relationships between cities. To do so, we build a novel dataset describing the inter-city trade flows for road transported goods in Colombia for the period 2015–2019

This paper studies the role of buyer market power in determining the response of international prices to exchange rate changes (i.e., exchange rate pass-through). Using a novel dataset of the universe of Colombian export transactions that links Colombian exporters (sellers) to their foreign importers (buyers), I document three facts: i) most Colombian exports are concentrated in a few foreign buyers in each market, ii) the same seller charges different prices to different buyers in the same product and destination, and iii) markets with a higher concentration of sales among buyers display lowe

We propose a novel mechanism to explain the incomplete pass-through of exchange rates to exporter prices and quantities, based on the relationship between exporters' dynamic pricing strategies and currency risk premia. When domestic currency risk premium increases, the relative value of current foreign currency cash flows rises compared to future ones. Consequently, exporters who set prices in customer markets are inclined to increase markups today, leading to higher prices in response to elevated risk premia. This risk-based explanation provides a new perspective on the exchange rate disconne

Abstract:
This study follows a novel approach proposed by Angelico et al. (2022) of using Twitter to measure inflation perception in in real-time in Colombia. By applying machine learning techniques, we implement two real-time indicators of inflation perception and show that both exhibit a similar dynamic pattern to that of inflation and inflation expectations for the sample period January 2015 to March 2023. Our interpretation of these results is that they suggest that our indicators are closely linked to the underlying factors driving inflation perception. Overall, this approach provides a valuable in

In this article we experimentally evaluate Colombias Think Equal program, which teaches socioemotional skills to children ages 3 to 6. Given the context of COVID-19, the original design was adapted as a hybrid model, alternating in-person and remote instruction and engaging families in the implementation of the curriculum. We found that the program had positive effects on childrens prosocial behavior, self-awareness, and cognitive learning. The intervention also had an impact on education centers personnel (community mothers) and caregivers implementing the activities. Treated community mother
