Full textThis exploratory qualitative study presents and examine the perceptions of the integration process of Columbian immigrants living in Quebec City. In this present paper, integration is understood as a multidimensional process which includes the socioeconomic, civic, cultural and linguistic aspects. In order to have a better understanding of the subjective experience, migratory paths and the meanings behind a “successful integration”, eleven individuals have been interviewed for this study. When analysing the participants’ discourses, the definition of integration into a new society varies between respondents; their definitions are very personal, subjective and don’t match with the definition proposed by immigration policies. For some respondents, being able to use their skills meaningfully in work is a key part of a successful integration, for others, their integration is interrelated to their capacity to develop professional endeavours in their new country. Furthermore, establishing connections with members of the host society, participating in the cultural life and learning the French language have been identified as key components of their integration in Quebec City. Finally, although the analysis of the subjective experiences of a migratory journey might help immigrants to become major stakeholders in their integration process, future research must examine strategies used by the native population to facilitate their inclusion.

Full textThis exploratory qualitative research analyzes the perception that skilled immigrants have of their employability. Ten Colombian skilled and qualified immigrants established in the city of Quebec were interviewed in order to identify what were the limiting factors and contributing factors that affected their employability, and the strategies they have used to find a job. The discourse analysis of the participant's interviews revealed that the professional expectations are at the center of the project to immigrate. Furthermore, this analysis reveals that despite the obstacles they must overcome to obtain the recognition of their qualifications, skilled immigrants are generally satisfied with the processes to integrate to the job market. Finally, the analysis identifies that skilled immigrants believe certain factors such as personal skills, fluency in the French language and professional field certainly contributed to successfully joining the workforce.

Full textImmigration has been increasing for the past 25 years in Canada. Between 1999 and 2008, the largest group of refugees settling in the province of Quebec came from Colombia. This increase in population diversity is not without consequences for public health institutions. This is true in particular for the child welfare system in which migrant and refugee families are overrepresented. It is also recognized that the acculturation process causes a change in parental roles. Furthermore, research has established a link between the endorsement of certain values, such as family-orientation (familismo) and adherence to gender roles (machismo), to explain the practices of « latino » migrant parents and the way they represent their possible implication in public health institutions. This comparative study aims to explore three types of representations among parents: parenting practices, maltreatment and child welfare system. This exploration was conducted among two groups of parents in Quebec: Quebecers and Colombians who migrated to Quebec city. A mixed method design was privileged and included focus groups. A total of 49 participants (Quebecers: 30, 5 focus groups and Colombians: 19, 4 focus groups) took part in focus group discussions and each participant completed three questionnaires. These questionnaires measured familismo, machismo and acculturation. The mean scores of familismo, machismo and acculturation were integrated into the thematic analysis. It appears that Quebecers’ and Colombians’ representations of maltreatment and child welfare system, as well as parenting practices differ very little. However, differences between Colombians and Quebecers emerged concerning representations of the development of autonomy and the idealization of children's success. The role of the institution, and more precisely of the child welfare system, in familial conflict resolution also raises contrasting speech between the two groups. Considering the diversity of Quebec’s society, migrant parents’ representations should be taken into account when intervening among these families. Information concerning the functioning of the child welfare system should be disseminated among migrant parents to demystify the role of this system.

In recent years, Québec City has welcomed an increasing number of immigrants as well as a significant number of non-permanent residents, including more and more international students. This has given way to an even more diverse urban fabric. Half of the newcomers are women who, while experiencing most of the challenges shared by all immigrants, often face greater barriers due to a dual woman/immigrant status. On the other hand, immigrant women also have a capacity to act upon their lives and implement strategies to cope with their difficulties, including getting socially involved in the host society. This exploratory research focuses on one of these strategies – volunteering – through interviews with immigrant women who have volunteered in the early years of their lives in Quebec. The main objective of the research is to understand the role of volunteering with regard to the integration process. Some observations came out of our results. For the majority of participants, volunteering came in line with previous commitments while circumstances specific to post-migration could lead to changes in the types of volunteering they chose, the way they committed themselves and the motivations behind their choices. Interviewees have got involved according to their principles and values as well as their personal interests, but their immigrant status also carried additional motivations including the wish to create social

Full textImmigration and cultural diversity are, more than ever, a central issue in current sociopolitical debates in Quebec, with identity and integration being the two major emergent themes. While immigrants want to maintain their cultural heritage, Quebecois fear losing theirs in the increasing diversity. This qualitative study centers on an especially discriminated and targeted group: Muslim women. In it, we explore how these women define their identity and how they feel about their integration in society. Using symbolic interactionism and life course perspectives, we seek to understand how these two processes, identity and integration, interact. The data collected during thirteen semi-directed interviews with Muslim-identified women explore the cultural, religious, professional, familial and feminine dimension of their identity. These were then put in relation to the facilitators and the obstacles of the feelingexperience of integration. Whereas the social-political context tends to confine Muslim people’s identity solely to its religious dimension, this study wants to show that immigration is so much more diverse, complex and dynamic than we usually assume. Keywords: qualitative study, integration, immigration, Muslim women, life course perspective, symbolic interactionism

Full textEach year in the boreal forest, wildfires generate large amounts of dead trees in Quebec. Considered a potential loss of revenue for the economy, the government asks that a part of those trees is salvaged. This is also a practice experiencing a rising trend worldwide. On the other hand, post-fire salvage logging is governed by various constraints, concerning both the profitability of operations and compliance with the standards of the forest ecosystem management (FEM) aiming at conserving the biodiversity associated with burned forests. The implementation of FEM requires knowledge on the impact that fire has on the forest in a spatially explicit manner. In this light, we first evaluated on site burn severity for 60 study sites distributed accross 5 burns. We then assessed the ability of the differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (dNBR), a remote sensing method developed by US researchers to estimate burn severity, at providing an accurate representation of the terrain conditions. The positive results of this step allowed us to consider the dNBR improve management tools of burned forests. From the viewpoint of the profitability of salvage logging, we then evaluated the density of Monochamus spp. (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) attacks, which constitute an important source of quality degradation of wood and incidentally their value. The knowledge acquired on the ecology of Monochamus spp. and established models predict the levels of these insects attacks based on tree species, stem diameter and burn severity (dNBR). Thirdly, following part of the FEM, we sought to identify high conservation value stands for biodiversity, using saproxylic beetles as an indicator group, and key variables that are tree species and diameter, as well as burn severity (dNBR). This allowed us to identify six groups of ecologically related species, of which, we identified three groups having a strong association with the burned habitat. Since these three groups contain species associated to burns, that are linked to habitats often salvaged such as jack pine and large diameters, they may be adversely affected by salvage logging. The results of our work, by using a spectral index of burn severity (dNBR) in management tools, make possible the optimization of post-fire salvage logging, from both the economic and conservation points of view, in compliance with the FEM.
