Abstract:
From the 1860s, the colonial settlement of Beltana in the northern deserts of South Australia emerged as a transportation hub atop an existing, cosmopolitan center of Aboriginal trade. Viewing a colonial settlement on Kuyani land through a mobilities paradigm, this article examines intersecting settler and Aboriginal trajectories of movement through Beltana, illuminating their complex entanglements. Challenging the imperial myth of emptiness that shaped how Europeans saw the lands they invaded, this article renders visible the multiple imaginative geographies that existed at every colonial settlement. Examining mobility along Kuyani and Wangkangurru tracks alongside British mobilities, this article makes a methodological argument for writing multiaxial histories of settler colonialism.

In the year 1771 a Virginian politician, Richard Bland, wrote to Thomas Adams on issues thrown up by the steadily worsening relations between the legislatures of mainland America and the Imperial government. His letter moved on to the subject of religion, and to the suggestion made increasingly in recent years that colonial worship and ministry according to the English Prayer Book would be strengthened by the introduction of personal episopacy on the model of the mother country. On this Bland commented.

Abstract:
Perineurioma is a mesenchymal neoplasm best known in soft-tissue pathology. A colonic perineurioma is a relatively recently described entity and sometimes encountered in specimens from the large intestine, especially distal colon. Without its recognition, a perineurioma can be misdiagnosed as other more common gastrointestinal spindle cell neoplasms. Here, we describe a case of colonic perineurioma with polypoid growth extruding into the intestinal lumen. Case. A woman in her seventh decade of life underwent a follow-up colonoscopy after an uneventful resection of a benign colonic polyp. A previously undetected 6-mm polyp was found in the sigmoid colon and was resected endoscopically. Microscopic examination of the lesion revealed a proliferation of bland spindle cells in the lamina propria mucosae, which were immunohistochemically positive for epithelial membrane antigen, claudin 1, and glucose transporter-1. A colonic perineurioma was diagnosed.

This paper describes cultural policy in Greece from the end of World War II up to the fall of the junta of colonels in 1974. The writer's object is to show how the Cold War favoured defeated Western countries, which participated effectively in the globalisation of American culture, as in the Western world de-nazification was transformed into a purge of communism. Using the careers of three composers active in communist resistance organizations as examples (Iannis Xenakis, Mikis Theodorakis and Alecos Xenos), the writer describes the repercussions of this phenomenon in Greek musical life and creativity.

Abstract:
Quality research, innovative and provocative. American historian Dane Kennedy’s The Last Blank Spaces: Exploring Africa and Australia delivers a carefully written comparative history of British exploration that challenges romantic conceptualisations of explorer and Indigenous relations in the nineteenth century. The very title ‘The Last Blank Spaces’ conjures up images of terra nullius. The final frontiers in British exploration of two vast continents, an emptiness “to advance imperial agendas, to pre-empt political rivals, to inspire patriotic pride, to discover natural resources, to promote commercial interests and further humanitarian objectives” (p. 60). The Last Blank Spaces fits into a genre of Indigenous, colonial ethnography when the British explorer is the central character and the Indigenous person is a support, but the book differs from conventional Western accounts. Kennedy writes that it is a book that “traces the development of exploration from an idea to a practice, from a practice to an outcome, and from an outcome to a myth” (p. 23).

Abstract:
Colonic motor function is modulated by extended and local neural reflexes involving unknown mediators. To test the role of serotonin (5-HT3) pathways, increases in colonic tone during antral distension and duodenal lipid perfusion (gastrocolonic responses) and changes in orad and caudad colonic tone in response to local colonic distension (peristaltic reflex) were measured after double-blind granisetron (10 μg/kg) or placebo infusion in healthy human volunteers. Antral distension evoked increases in colonic tone, which were blunted by granisetron ( P < 0.05) without effects on antral compliance. Intraduodenal lipid perfusion also evoked increased colonic tone, which was reduced by granisetron ( P < 0.05). In contrast, orad colonic contractions and caudad relaxations and contractions during colonic distension were unaffected by granisetron. In conclusion, 5-HT3 receptor antagonism blunts both the mechano- and chemoreceptor components of the human gastrocolonic response without altering antral compliance. In contrast, 5-HT3 pathways play no role in the ascending or descending components of the colonic peristaltic reflex. These findings demonstrate different roles for 5-HT3 receptors in the control of colonic motor function by the proximal gastrointestinal tract and by local neural reflexes.

Abstract:
Selected strains of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria are known to ameliorate constipation-related symptoms and have previously shown efficacy on digestive health. In this clinical trial, the safety and effectiveness of a probiotic blend containing lactobacilli and bifidobacteria were evaluated in adults with self-reported bloating and functional constipation. Constipation was diagnosed by the Rome III criteria. A total of 156 adults were randomised into this double-blind and placebo-controlled trial. Participants consumed the combination of Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM (1010 cfu), Lactobacillus paracasei Lpc-37 (2.5×109 cfu), Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis strains Bl-04 (2.5×109 cfu), Bi-07 (2.5×109 cfu) and HN019 (1010 cfu) (n=78), or placebo (microcrystalline cellulose) (n=78) for two weeks. After treatment the following were measured: primary outcome of bloating and secondary outcomes of colonic transit time, bowel movement frequency, stool consistency, other gastrointestinal symptoms (flatulence, abdominal pain, and burbling), constipation-related questionnaires (PAC-SYM and PAC-QoL) and product satisfaction. Faecal recovery of consumed strains was determined. The enrolled population was defined as constipated, however, the initial bloating severity was lower than in previous similar studies. No clinically significant observations related to the safety of the product were reported. Product efficacy was not shown in the primary analysis for bloating nor for the secondary efficacy analyses. The placebo functioned similarly as the probiotic product. In post-hoc analysis, a statistically significant decrease in flatulence in favour of the probiotic group was observed; day 7 (intention-to-treat (ITT): P=0.0313; per-protocol (PP): 0.0253) and on day 14 (ITT: P=0.0116; PP: P=0.0102) as measured by area under the curve (AUC) analysis. The mean AUC of all symptoms decreased in favour of the probiotic group, indicating less digestive discomfort. The study was registered at the ISRCTN registry (ISRCTN41607808).

Abstract:
AbstractIn spite of recent calls for the decolonisation of Czech and Slovak academia, there is still relatively little reflection of post-colonial theory in either Czech or Slovak historiography or related disciplines, including ethnology and Slavic studies. In the following essay I summarise the local discussion of coloniality and colonialism that has been going on since at least the end of the 2000s, while pointing out its conceptual limits and blind spots; namely the persistence of ‘colonial exceptionalism’ and the lack of understanding and use of race as an analytical tool. In dialogue with critical race theory as well as recent literature that deals with comparable ‘non-colonial’ or ‘marginal-colonial’ contexts such as South-Eastern Europe, Poland and the Nordic countries, I discuss how the local debates relating to colonial history as well as the post-colonial / post-socialist present of both countries would benefit from embracing the concept of ‘colonial exceptionalism’ and from including concepts of race and ‘whiteness’ as important tools of a critical analysis.

Abstract:
Maimun Palace is one of the iconic cultural heritage buildings in Medan City, North Sumatra Province. It has a unique blend of Malay and colonial styles. The subject in this article deals with the building foundations of the Maimun Palace. The foundation part has a crucial role in a building, but it is rarely used as a research topic. The issues raised in this paper relate to the structure, composition, and function of the foundation. The purpose of writing this article besides answering the problem is also expected to be able to increase architectural treasury, especially regarding the style of building foundations that have a blend of traditional Malay and Colonial styles. Through descriptive-analytical research, the conclusion obtained from this study is that there are three kinds of building foundations that adjust to the function of supporting the buildings above which consist of one, two and three levels of the building.

Abstract:
There are numerous histories of the Victorian goldfields, individual diggers experiences, and the digging community as a whole. By contrast, very little has been written about the early gold mining companies. This thesis seeks to address this dearth in part, with a longitudinal study of one of the leading gold mining companies in nineteenth-century Victoria. The Port Phillip and Colonial Gold Mining Company (Port Phillip Company) was one of many gold bubble companies formed in England during 1851-3 to undertake gold mining in Australia. Within a few years it was the only survivor of this episode of British corporate gold-fever. The thesis argues that the influence of Rivett Henry Bland, the companys managing director, was instrumental in its success, particularly in its early years when faced with anti-company sentiment and unfavourable mining legislation. The company established a large-scale operation at Clunes in 1857, rapidly assuming a pre-eminent position in colonial gold mining with its superior technology and mining practices. Historians generally portray Australian gold mining operations as small, locally funded and inefficient, prior to British capital investment in the late 1880s. While true of the larger picture, this simply emphasises the uniqueness of the British-owned and funded Port Phillip Company, the largest and most efficient gold mining operation in Australia from 1857 until the early 1880s. The company and its investment offshoot, the Victoria (London) Mining Company, invested in over thirty Victorian gold mining companies during the 1860s. Again, this runs counter to the general view that British investment in Australian gold mining began only in the late 1880s. Although the two companies investments equalled only a fraction of the later wave of British capital in absolute monetary terms, their contribution to the growth of the Victorian gold mining industry at the time was significant.

Abstract:
The litigations between Germany and the French Foreign Legion started before the 1st World War. Despite this, the end of the war changed the situation. For one part, the two nations were no longer equal to each other, as Germany had lost the war, and was suffering from important internal problems. On the other hand ‘the old Legion had died in the trenches in the North of France’. Because of this, the Legion, as an institution, needed to rebuild itself. Unfortunately to do this, and to renew itself, it needed war- hardened troupes, which could only be recruited from their old enemy, Austria and Germany. This paradox, not only was the start of a rivality between the nations, to assure the recruitment, or its refusal, but also led to a spy system being formed between the two countries. In its term this led to a communication’s system being formed around social evolutions and the life surrounding the Legion. For the French Foreign Legion, the period between the two World Wars, is a passage from one war to another, and has no peaceful moments. It is a period where it questioned itself, adapted to subversive political elements, and which it became part of the rivality between growing colonial and political differences

Abstract:
Cognitive radio (CR) has been proposed as a technolgy to improve the spectrum efficiency by giving an opportunistic access of the licensed-user spectra to unlicensed users. In this thesis, our purpose is to propose a specific scenario of CR and to present solutions to some related problems .or this purpose, we consider an overlay CR consisting of a primary macro-cell and cognitive small cells of cooperative secondary base stations (SBS). We suggst studying a hydbrid CR where a filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) is used for the secondary users (SU) whereas the primary users (PU) are based on orthogonal frequency diiision multiplexing (OFDM). This choice is motivated by the following reasons : as OFDM is used in many current wideband primary systems, an important bandwidth can be reused when OFDM is considered for the PU. Concerning the secondary system, although OFDM has been recognized as a condidate for CR systems, FBMC modulation can be another candidate that overcomes some OFDM drawbacks. Indeed, compared to OFDM, FBMC has the advantage of reducing the SU interference level tha is induced by the differences between the SBS and PU carrier frequency offsets (CFO). In order to cancel the interferences, a precoding can ben inserted at the SBS. Therefore, we propose to derive the interference expression due to SU at het PU receiver. Then, ero forcing beamforming (ZFBF) is considered to cancel the interferences. To confirm the efficiency of the proposed cheme, we make a comparative study with CR based on OFDM for both the PU and theSU. However, applying ZFBF depends on the channels between the SBS and the PU. A channel estimation is hence necessary. For this purpose, we propose to approximate the channel by an autoregressive process (AR) and to consider the channel estimation issue by using a training sequence. The received signals, also called the observations, are disturbed by an additive measurement noise. They can be : 1) additive and white. In that case, the AR paramters and the channel can be jointly estimated from the received noisy signal by using e recursive approache. Neverless, the corresponding state space representaion of the system is non-linear. In addition to existing methods that have been considered, we propose to carry out a complementary study by investigating the relevance of the quadrature Kalman filter (QKF) and the cubature Kalman filter (CKF). The, we compare them with other non-linear Kalman based approaches. 2) additive and colored. In that case, a parametric approach can be considered and based on a priori model of the noise. In our case, a moving average (MA) model is studie. Our approach operates as follows : firstly, the AR parameters are estimated by using the overdetermined high-order Yule-Walker (HOYN) equations. The variance of the AR-process driving process can be deduced by means of an orthogonal projection betweenn two types of etimates of AR-process correlation vectors. Then, the correlation sequence of th MA noise is estimated. Secondly, the MA parameters are obtained by using a new variant of the inner-outer factorization approache. We study the avantages and the limits of the proposed method. The, we compare it with existing algorithms such as the improved least square-colored noise (ILS-CN), the Yule-Walker ILS (YWILS) and the prediction error method (PEM). The proposed method is first evaluated with synthetic AR and MA processes and then is applied in the field of mobile communcation for channel estimation

Abstract:
Bit rates of high speed serial links (USB, SATA, PCI-express, etc.) have reached the multi-gigabits per second, and continue to increase. Two of the major electrical parameters used to characterize SerDes Integrated Circuit performance are the transmitted jitter at a given bit error rate (BER) and the receiver capacity to track jitter at a given BER.Modeling the phase noise of the different SerDes components, extracting the time jitter and decomposing it, would help designers to achieve desired Figure of Merit (FoM) for future SerDes versions. Generating white and colored noise synthetic jitter patterns would allow to better analyze the effect of jitter in a system for design verification. The phase locked loop (PLL) is one of the contributors of clock random and periodic jitter inside the system. This thesis presents a method for modeling the PLL with phase noise injection and estimating the time domain jitter. A time domain model including PLL loop nonlinearities is created in order to estimate jitter. A novel method for generating Gaussian distribution synthetic jitter patterns from colored noise profiles is also proposed. The Standard Organizations specify random and deterministic jitter budgets. In order to decompose the PLL output jitter (or the generated jitter from the proposed method), a new technique for jitter analysis and decomposition is proposed. Modeling simulation results correlate well with measurements and this technique will help designers to properly identify and quantify the sources of deterministic jitter and their impact on the SerDes system. We have developed a method, for specifying PLLs in terms of Phase Noise. This method works for any standard (USB, SATA, PCIe, …), and defines Phase noise profiles of the different parts of the PLL, in order to be sure that the standard requirements are satisfied in terms of Jitter

Abstract:
This manuscript presents research aiming to show possible positive effects of deterministic and stochastic perturbations on the responses of different nonlinear systems. To that end, both numerical and experimental studies were carried out on two kinds of structures : an elementary electronic FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillator and an electrical line developed by resistively coupling 45 elementary cells. In the first section, the elementary cell characterization was undertaken in a deterministic regime. In the presence of a bichromatic stimulus, it is shown that when the low frequency component is subthreshold, its detection can be maximized for an optimal magnitude of the second component thanks to vibrational resonance. Next, it is established that this resonance may be enhanced for specific frequencies of the second component ; this phenomenon is referred to as frequency resonance. Furthermore, white and colored noise sources effects on vibrational resonance are reported. Then, for any other bichromatic excitation configuration, attention was focused on ghost stochastic resonance. Contrary to the other phenomena introduced in this manuscript, this one differs in the fact that the frequency of interest in the system output is here not applied on the input. Finally, the last part of the manuscript is devoted to the study of the coupled structure. It is shown that information propagation through line cells can be enhanced by vibrational propagation and noise assisted propagation phenomena. These nonlinear effects respectively occur when the system is under a high frequency deterministic perturbation or a random noise source

Blind source separation (BSS) is a popular topic in many practical applications such as beamforming (array processing), image/speech processing and biomedical signal analysis with multiple sensors at receivers. The multidimensional observation vector is assumed to be given by x[n]=As[n]+w[n](1.1) where A is a PxK mixing matrix,s[n] is a Kx1 source signal vector and w[n] is a Px1 additive noise vector. The key objective of BSS is to separate and estimate the source signals s[n] from the received measurement vector x[n] without any knowledge of the mixing matrix. Some existing second-order statistics (SOS) methods, such as Tong et al.’s algo-rithm for multiple unknown signals extraction (AMUSE) method [1] and Belouchrani et al.’s second-order blind identification (SOBI) [2], are two-step approaches includ-ing a whitening procedure followed by the determination of an unknown unitary ma-trix. In the whitening procedure, the noise variance has to be accurately estimated to structure the whitening matrix. However, when the noise variance is either unknown or cannot be estimated, these methods may no longer be effective. After the whiten-ing procedure, an unknown unitary matrix needs to be identified in order to estimate the mixing matrix A. The AMUSE algorithm performs diagonalization of the whit-ened covariance matrix at only one time lag not equal to zero to estimate the unitary matrix. However, it is not possible to determine a time lag such that the eigenvalues of the whitened covariance matrix, i.e., the autocorrelation functions of source signals, are distinct. When the spectra of the source signals are very similar, joint diagonali-zation of more than one whitened covariance matrices with different time lags will improve robustness. Based on this concept, the SOBI algorithm simultaneously di-agonalizes [3] a set of the whitened covariance matrices. Thus it can be seen that these SOS methods require more strict condition on the spectra of the source signals which corresponds to the second-order identifiability condition found in [4]. A Higher-order statistics (HOS) method such as Ding et al.’s kurtosis maximization algorithm (KMA) [5], designs a weight vector through the gradient type optimization algorithm with slow convergence rate and high computational load to extract a tem-porally independent or colored source signal. In view of these shortcomings, Chi and Chen proposed a fast KMA (FKMA) [6] with a fast convergence rate and low com-putational load. Unlike SOS methods, these HOS methods only permit the source signals to be non-Gaussian but do not have any condition on the spectra of the source signals. Although the FKMA (including the KMA) is theoretically applicable to both the cases of temporally independent and colored source signals, we empirically found that the performance of the FKMA significantly degrades as the source signals are temporally colored especially when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is low. An insight of this observation is that the FKMA may converge to an undesired solution under low SNR due to the relatively small absolute kurtosis of the temporally colored source signal. In this thesis, a novel space-time BSS algorithm, the blind source ex-traction-inverse (BSE-INV) algorithm, is proposed, which involves a blind beam-forming processing using the FKMA followed by a blind deconvolution processing using the SISO-IFC [14], to improve the convergence property and also the perform-ance of the FKMA for the case of temporally colored source signals. This thesis is organized as follows. In Chapter 2, FKMA is reviewed and the ef-fects of the temporally colored source signals on FKMA are described. In chapter 3, the proposed blind source extraction-inverse (BSE-INV) algorithm is presented for BSS. In Chapter 4, some simulation results are provided to justify the efficacy and feasibility of the proposed BSE-INV algorithm. Finally, some conclusions and future researches regarding this thesis are given in Chapter 5.

Abstract:
This important new study by one of Korea’s leading historians focuses on the international relations of colonial Korea – from the Japanese rule of the peninsula and its foreign relations (1905–1945) to the ultimate liberation of the country at the end of the Second World War. In addition, it fills a significant gap – the ‘blank space’ – in Korean diplomatic history. Furthermore, it highlights several other fundamental aspects in the history of modern Korea, such as the historical perception of the policy-making process and the attitudes of both China and Britain which influenced US policy regarding Korea at the end of World War II.

Abstract:
The epilogue glances forward to the imperial crisis of the 1760s when colonial politicians like the Virginian burgess Richard Bland sought to reconstruct the circumstances by which the Renaissance empire gave rise to colonies like Virginia that took for granted their substantive civil integrity in relation to the state. Bland was sufficiently a product of the Enlightenment era and its own embrace of the Hobbesian theory of state sovereignty that he struggled to understand fully how such colonial commonwealths came into being. Yet, he grasped much about the Christian humanist logic on which Virginians had defined their polity, and he had no doubt that the British American empire's current constitutional arrangements were incomprehensible except in relation to English colonization's sixteenth- and seventeenth-century beginnings.

Abstract:
Having seen how Dualism and Essentialism toy with our understanding of our beginning and end, health and disease, Chapter 15 turns to examine how these colored lenses distort our view of our free will and the self. Whether free will truly exists is not a matter I will decide here, but whether we think it does is entirely within this chapter’s purview. When I believe I have freely chosen to lift my finger, I essentially believe in three things: first, that I can tell whether I did it; second, that I can tell whether I consciously willed the act; and third, that there is a single, unitary, willing ”me.” All three beliefs are demonstrably wrong. Dualism and Essentialism are again to blame.

Abstract:
Colon cancer is estimated to be the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the US [1], with the cost of colorectal cancer treatment reaching $8.4 billion annually [2]. Though colonoscopy is the current standard for colon cancer screening and diagnosis, the procedure has disadvantages due from the near-blind navigation process used. During the procedure, endoscopists frequently lose sight of landmarks in the colon, losing track of their locations within the colon and becoming disoriented.

Abstract:
Colonoscopy is currently the gold standard for diagnosing colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. During a colonoscopy, a flexible endoscope is inserted into the patient’s colon to inspect the inner wall of the large intestine, from the rectum to the caecum. This procedure is very important for cancer screening and can yield early diagnosis. Colon cancer is 85–95% successfully treated if detected early; however, there is only a 30% compliance rate for the procedure in the United States. This low compliance rate for the examination is largely due to its uncomfortable nature, caused by difficulties in blind scope manipulation, and “looping” of the endoscope which can lead to stretching and perforation of the bowel [1] (Figure 1).

Abstract:
Endoscopes are used in medicine to inspect inside the body without having to perform open surgery on the patient. The current gold standard for screening and diagnosing colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease is the colonoscopy. This procedure uses a flexible endoscope to inspect the wall of the large intestine, from the rectum to the caecum, for cancerous or precancerous lesions. This screening is very important since early detection of colon cancer is 85–95% successfully treated. Unfortunately, there is only a 30% compliance rate for colonoscopies in the United States. This lack of compliance is due largely in part to the uncomfortable nature of the procedure, caused by the fact that the stiff scope is difficult to manipulate in the non-rigid colon, leading to “looping” of the scope (see Fig. 1), and that the clinician is essentially navigating in near blind conditions during the procedure.
