Full textThe links between press and literature are very tight. This statement is all the more obvious if one observes from an historical point of view both the Congolese literature, and the Congolese politics and society. From 1504 on, schools to teach how to read and write have been opened by Portuguese Catholic missionaries. Different kinds of publications, often related to religion, were printed during the following centuries. In 1926, the international Conference in Zoute, Belgium, states the necessity to promote the publication of literary works in African languages. The emergence of writing using French language results from three sociocultural facts: literature contests, organized by the Native Arts Friends, various publications in magazines, and the creation, in 1943, of the Star Library publishing house. But the colonial policy emphasizes above all elementary and practical teachings, unlikely to help literary talents stand out. It was not until the foundation of the monthly « Congolese Voice » (1945-1959), by the poet A. -R. Bolamba, that a literary platform became available to the « developed » ones. Another author, revealed in the press, deserves some attention: J. F. Lyeki, Regarding poetry, between 1960 and 1967, through literary circles and newspapers opinion columns, such as « Documents for Action » and « Academic Presence », authors managed to be published and were awarded literary prizes. During the Mobutu era, literature, at the start rather essay-oriented at his own initiative, ends up going back to a more artistic and cultural style in the 1970’s; yet after 1975, publications will come mainly from writers in exile. The first essays dealing with theater started in 1955 with A. Mongita, but this genre will not really flourish until the 1970’s. One name still stands out: M. Mikanza, whose most famous play is Trial in Makala (1977). As far as stories are concerned –novels, short-stories, tales-, one name prevailed during the 1970’s: B. Zamenga. Traditional values are then challenged in the face of modernism. Yet Zairian literature will not assert itself until references to authors - almost all from Lovanium University and mostly living abroad, such as V. Y. Mudimbe, G. Ngal, M. N. Kadima, P. Ngandu, M. Buabua wa Kayembe, S. Djungu, and Cl. Faïk Nzuji- were made in the press. Among literature critics, the work of A. Mbuyamba, in the review « Academic Presence », deserves to be praised

Full textFrance and Belgium organised several international and colonial exhibitions, as well as universal exhibitions or World Fairs, from the end of the 20th century to 1958. Through these world exhibitions, these two great colonial powers developed various forms of propaganda to account for their “civilizing missions”. Protestant and catholic missionaries took part in those great celebrations. By reading and working on archives of religious congregations such as the congregation of the Holy Spirit, The Jesuit, and the oeuvre de la Propagation de la Foi, but also the French, Belgian and Swedish national archives and the Holy Sea archives, I was able to understand how the missionaries organized themselves to take part in those exhibitions in France and Belgium. The missionaries organised exhibitions in ever growing pavilions which would become huge architectural complexes, from the 1897 exhibition (taking place in Tervuren) to the 1935 and 1958 exhibitions (taking place in Brussels), not forgetting the 1900, 1931 and 1937 Paris exhibitions. The way missionaries staged their work changed and evolved. Indeed, “indigenous” artifacts were gradually less displayed and missionaries used dioramas, stylish statistics and lit-up maps instead. The architecture of the pavilion was in itself telling, a good example of this being the 1931 pavilion of the Catholic missions. The way missionaries staged their exhibitions reflected the changes in their worldview. The colonized populations and their cultures were more and more emphasized, while the link with the colonization was less and less asserted and straightforward

Full text"The belgian colonization and its impact on the social and political organization of the yaka-luwa people" is the subject of our doctoral dissertation. As they acknowledge geed their military defeat, their country economic underdevelopment, their social strate unbalance, the weakening of their political power and of their traditional autority, the loss of their various religious and magic believes caused by christianism, the european school, the modern trade, the european medical or sanitary services, the yaka-luwa (yanga-luwa, yaka-lunda) community became submissive, here and there, between 1930 and 1940, to the belgian autority and finally built a multiracial society. Due to the social and political mixture which caused it to lose its authenticity, the yaka-luwa society became both mi-traditional and mi-modern, and was therefore bound to denitely turn to the future in the same society

Full textA study of comic strips taking place in africa at the time of colonization presented in "spirou", "tintin", "vaillant" and "pif" between 1938 and 1993. Integration of strips spanning the period between the expedition to egypt (1798) and independence in each country concerned (early 60s), created by franco-belgian authors (with incorporation of some italian ant british works published in the studied titles) and taking place in north africa, black africa and madagascar. This deals with the study of imagery in the 9th art whether exotic, imaginary, historical and propagandist, at a quantitative and qualitative level, with geographical, chronological and thematic classification of illustrated stories. Analysis of the large themes of escapism and adventure, of the way europeans look at africa and africans (africa seen as a background with its fauna, flora, landscapes and human realisations). The way the white sees himself is not forgotten either. The origin, foundings and development of the colonial discourse in the comic strip, from the exaltation of colonization to its criticism, are examined with its sources of inspiration whether literary, ideological iconographic (the cinema included) and the founding mythes and paradigms created by st organ and herge. A study of the great writers from the 30 s to nowadays. The current renewal of colonial imagery and its limitations. The issue of the outlook of the colonized and crossed outlooks end this research

Full textMore than a diffusion of concepts, the transfer of knowledge from one place to an other is a social fact, a process of cultural exchange between different civilisations. The case of the institut national pour l'etude agronomique du congo belge (ineac) is a vivid illustration of this fact. This institution was established in 1933 to promote the scientific improvement of congolese agriculture. This creation was an important step in the scientific expansion which accompanied the process of colonization, from exploration and survey, to research and experimentation. We explored the place of science in the colonial context and the shifting ways it was organised (applied and pure), and followed the historical changes of a disciplin : tropical agricultural science. As the knowledge produced by the ineac was merely guided by the will to increase agricultural production, talking about transfer would be, strictly speaking, misleading. In dominated countries where ruling powers were interested in developping science only as a tool for exploitation, science was more a matter of harnessing than of cultural exchange between local knowledge and european science. Even if the paysannats represent attempts to hybridize farmers' and researchers' knowledge, transfer of knowledge and concern for training african researchers were really too weak and did not lead to the constitution of any scientific tradition of research in congo. These historical observations explain the nature of difficulties the congolese faced when they undertook to adapt the scientific colonial heritage to the socioeconomical realities of the country

Full textThis study establishes that while the discovery, conquest and colonization of México occurred in from 1492 onward (i.e., modern historical times), the sixteenth-century Spanish legacy there, was in fact medieval. I reach this conclusion through the analysis of images contained in the Relación de Michoacán (1541) and the Florentine Codex (1579). This supports the view that considers this decisive event as a medieval extension of the Spanish understanding of the world, as different to the logical approach of modern renaissance times. The friars responsible of the manuscripts elaboration Jerónimo de Alcalá and Bernardino de Sahagún declared that their projects main purpose was the knowledge of both Purépecha and Mexica pre Hispanic cultures based on the indians’ declarations, their memories of the events before and during the conquest and their involvement in the writing of the manuscripts. In doing so the friars would also be able to detect and eradicate idolatry in order to effectively establish Christianity. Nevertheless images interpretation in both manuscripts shows the supremacy of medieval mentality upon indigenous world view so that these books reflect the profound and quick acculturation lived in México as much as the lost vanquished cultures. The ideas are developed in four chapters. Chapter I summarizes medieval cultural signs that are to be found in both manuscripts as is the privilege of memory over observation: the truth is so as long as it exists in the memory not as a result of empirical verification. Chapter two deals with the description of the studied manuscripts in terms of their medieval codices strong similarities in structure and characteristics, specifically with Franciscan tradition manuscript making. Next chapter is a review of five iconographic analysis of these codices illustrations. The specialists approached their analysis from different methodologies useful to contrast the present thesis results. The fourth chapter is dedicated to the inquiry of an image selection that explains the end of both studied cultures, interestingly enough, through the assimilation of the new imposed paradigms: forms, significance and values of medieval image making. Key words: social history of art, colonial codices, medieval codices, medieval art, iconography, iconology.

Full textCommencing in the 1860s, at the onset of the Torres Strait beche-de-mer and pearl shell industry, the system has so failed Torres Strait Islanders' social development that it moved Islander leaders in the 1980s to push for cessation from Australia and, in the mid 1900s to seek "autonomy and self government" to remain within the Australian political system. In this thesis, I use this evidence to bring into perspective the concept of development with awareness to the colonial history of Torres Strait in comparison with oral history interpreted as the culture of my people. The theme my thesis implicates the contestation between Torres Strait Islanders and governments who impose administrative policies through the Islander system of political representation (regarding Islander culture and resources).

Full textThe theme of India is not unknown in French literature; several works have used India as part of their writing, most notably Jules Verne's Around the World in 80 Days, and Henri Michaux's A Barbarian in Asia. In twentieth-century literature, representations have changed to a degree: the imagination has been partially replaced by real commentary. However, this evolution has not yet lent itself to a realistic description of the country. The French imagination of India during the nineteenth century and the twentieth century was studied by Catherine Weinberger-Thomas, and Jackie Assayag. Nevertheless, their articles are limited to so-called "literary" works. There is no academic writing on comic books. This work aims to deal with the image of colonial India in contemporary comic books conveyed by French-speaking Europe. The goal of this research is to analyse the works in question in order to study whether the contemporary authors have laid stereotypical clichés to rest and replaced them with more realistic descriptions, or, whether they perpetuate the literary images inherited from the nineteenth-century literature, such as those we can read in Jules Verne's Around the world in 80 Days. Our research confirms that the image of India that authors of comic books convey does not entirely stem from realism, but rather from a keen desire to portray the Indian subcontinent as an exotic, magical land of adventures

Full textDuring the first century B.C., with the rise of the Roman Empire, the Levant became the scene of cosmopolitanism where many heteroclite cultures would coexist. The new cosmopolitan society had Rome as its capital (Caput Mundi), and roads drawn up by the army linking the rest of the empire to its capital. Recent rescue excavations (since 2005) in Berytus (Beirut) and Botrys (Batroun) have revealed a considerable amount of unpublished data on populations who lived in the region during the four centuries of the Roman Empire until the early centuries of Christianity. Following an archaeo-anthropological approach, this thesis presents an assessment of eight funerary sites (n= 290) from the cities of Colonia Julia Augusta Felix Berytus and Botrys. Significantly, Botrys, unlike Berytus, did not have the status of a Roman colony. This research seeks to contribute to the history of these two cities. The purpose is to understand the populations of the past through the study of the skeletons, rituals and funerary practices as well as the organisation of funerary spaces. This study primarily reveals a cultural and biological cosmopolitanism illustrated by variability in funerary practices and in biological characteristics. These results suggest that at least two different groups or more coexisted in the Colonia Julia Augusta Felix Berytus. On the contrary, the biocultural data of Botrys skeletons reveal a less cosmopolitan city with less diversity shown on different anthropological and cultural levels. Indeed, the similarity of funerary practices, body treatments, grave goods and the organisation of the funerary space and biological homogeneity are indisputable in Botrys. Comparative analysis between Berytus and Botrys highlighted an existing biological heterogeneity at different scales between individuals of both cities. However, this diversity is contradicted by the homogeneity of the females of both cities during the 2th and the 4th century A. D

Full textPublished in volumes between 1894 and 1917 by the former bookshop Furne, Paul d’Ivoi’s "Voyages Excentriques" made up a collection which was very much valued by the youth of the Edwardian Era.These adventure novels, in the tradition of Jules Verne, were highly representative of their time with plots deeply rooted in the political ideas pervading then. They were anxious to contribute to the patriotic and moral moulding of their readers and applied to support the colonial work of France while promoting the values of the French Republic and celebrating its influence all over the world. The action, which often deals with international diplomatic stakes, sends the characters abroad to meet other nationalities whose visions reflect their relationships with France, whether friendly or of conflict. However the "Voyages Excentriques" swing from reality into fiction using the various means that adventure novels, then at their peak, offered them. Exotism and scientific extravagance are the main themes, often accompanied with detective stories or spy fiction as secondary sorts. When writing his adventure novels, Paul d’Ivoi carefully paid attention to differentiating himself from his predecessors, asserting his own manner by inventing wonderful scientific gadgets or giving a preponderant role to women. His books were a great success at the turn of the 20th century as New Year’s gifts, school prizes, popular manuals or cheap serials which were adapted on stage or even in movies. He is most original in his dealing with eccentricity which is to be found all through his collection of Belle Epoque novels
