Abstract:
To most observers, a patch of medium-contrast texture viewed against a background of high-contrast texture appears lower in contrast than an identical patch viewed against a homogeneous, mean gray background. This is the contrast contrast illusion. This chapter reviews basic findings concerning this illusion; for example, the contrast contrast illusion is selective for texture spatial frequency as well as for texture contrast polarity. Several theories to account for the illusion are discussed. Related concepts such as texture contrast, textual granularity, individual differences, contrast pol

Abstract:
Contrast asynchronies juxtapose color and color contrast information. The basic configuration of a contrast asynchrony consists of two identical disks whose luminance levels change in time from light to dark and back again; one disk is surrounded by a bright field and the other by a dark field; at 1Hz, observers report seeing the disks modulating in antiphase, yet also becoming light and dark at the same time. While such a configuration may look like a dynamic brightness illusion, the actual effect occurs because the visual system separates the in-phase luminance information from the antiphase

Color assimilation, also known as the Von Bezold spreading effect, is the phenomenon in which the perceived color of a region shifts toward that of its neighbor. This chapter describes the traditional form of color assimilation as well as three “special cases” where the effects are particularly dramatic: the chromatic White’s Effect, Monnier and Shevell’s ring patterns, and neon-color spreading. Three potential causes of color assimilation are discussed: neural blurring, contrast normalization, and perceptual layer decomposition. All three of these could contribute to White’s Effect, and their

Abstract:
Color and luminance interact in many ways in the human visual system. For instance, the colors in an afterimage, which are due to adaptation of retinal cones, are especially vivid when test contours, presented after the adapting image, coincide with the blurred edges of the afterimage. A single colored adapting pattern can give rise to two differently colored afterimages, according to the position of black lines in the test field. This shows that colors seen by the low-acuity chromatic pathways will diffuse outward along, but not across, luminance contours. This is also true for real colors. F

Abstract:
The color dove illusion is a type of a positive afterimage. The color dove illusion can be obtained with different colors and spatial surrounding regions. In this illusion the disappearance of a colored background causes an empty shape to obtain the hue of the disappeared background. The effect can be obtained even when the surrounding background area is relatively thin and when it is presented for a very short duration. This illusion occurs only when the contour of the empty shape remains after the background disappearance. Thus the color dove illusion is a positive aftereffect, which is diff

Learn how to create unified and visually inviting spaces with the third edition of Color Plus Design. Author Ron Reed shows how color and design, when used together, can organize any space around a theme or focal point, provide harmony or contrast, and help designers avoid common color mistakes in a variety of residential and commercial interiors. Students will gain an appreciation of how different cultures around the world use color in their designs, and learn how to effectively use color in conjunction with key design principles such as balance, rhythm, emphasis, proportion, scale, unity, ha
