Abstract:
In Choreographing in Color, J. Lorenzo Perillo investigates the development of Filipino popular dance and performance since the late 20th century. Drawing from nearly two decades of ethnography, choreographic analysis, and community engagement with artists, choreographers, and organizers, Perillo asserts the importance in shifting attention away from the predominant Philippine neoliberal and US imperialist emphasis on Filipinos as superb mimics, heroic migrants, model minorities, and natural dancers, and instead asks: what does it mean for Filipinos to navigate the violent forces of empire and

Abstract:
One of the fundamental debates about our experience of lightness and color involves their representational format. Some theories assert that the visual system decomposes the input into a layered representation of separated causes, whereas other theories do not. This chapter presents a variety of phenomena that directly demonstrate that layered image decompositions can play a causal role in our experience of lightness and color and discusses the theoretical implications and unresolved issues that are raised by these effects. The issue of the relationship between transparency and occlusion is di

Full text
Abstract:
Raynaud’s phenomenon is characterized by episodic digital ischaemia due to vasospasm causing closure of the small arteries and arterioles of the distal extremities, in response to cold exposure or emotional stimuli. This is manifested clinically by the sequential development of intense pallor of the fingers or toes, cyanosis, and rubor, following cold exposure and subsequent rewarming. These colour changes may be accompanied by paraesthesiae and other sensations, but pain is not usually a prominent feature. Raynaud’s phenomenon is separated into two categories: primary (idiopathic), called Ray

Abstract:
Visual illusions cut across academic divides and popular interests: on the one hand, illusions provide entertainment as curious tricks of the eye; on the other hand, scientific research related to illusory phenomena has given generations of scientists and artists deep insights into the brain and principles of mind and consciousness. Numerous thinkers (including Aristotle, Descartes, Da Vinci, Escher, Goethe, Galileo, Helmholtz, Maxwell, Newton, and Wittgenstein) have been lured by the apparent simplicity of illusions and the promise that illusory phenomena can elucidate the puzzling relationsh

Abstract:
Color assimilation, also known as the Von Bezold spreading effect, is the phenomenon in which the perceived color of a region shifts toward that of its neighbor. This chapter describes the traditional form of color assimilation as well as three “special cases” where the effects are particularly dramatic: the chromatic White’s Effect, Monnier and Shevell’s ring patterns, and neon-color spreading. Three potential causes of color assimilation are discussed: neural blurring, contrast normalization, and perceptual layer decomposition. All three of these could contribute to White’s Effect, and their
