Abstract:

Context.— In the early 20th century, the future of hospital-based clinical pathology practice was uncertain and this situation led to the formation of the American Society for Clinical Pathologists in 1922. Philip Hillkowitz, MD, and Ward Burdick, MD, were its cofounders. No biography of Hillkowitz exists. Objective.— To explore the life, beliefs, and accomplishments of Philip Hillkowitz. Design.— Available primary and secondary historical sources were reviewed. Results.— Hillkowitz, the son of a Russian rabbi, immigrated to America as an 11-year-old child in 1885. He later attended medical school in Cincinnati, Ohio, and then moved to Colorado, where he began his clinical practice, which transitioned into a clinical pathology practice. In Denver, he met Charles Spivak, MD, another Jewish immigrant and together they established the Jewish Consumptives' Relief Society, an ethnically sensitive tuberculosis sanatorium that flourished in the first half of the 20th century because of its national fundraising network. In 1921, Hillkowitz and Burdick, also a Denver-based pathologist, successively organized the pathologists in Denver, followed by the state of Colorado. Early the next year, they formed the American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). Working with the American College of Surgeons, the ASCP put hospital-based practice of clinical pathology on solid footing in the 1920s. Hillkowitz then established and oversaw the ASCP Board of Registry of Medical Technologists. Conclusions.— Philip Hillkowitz changed the directions of clinical pathology and tuberculosis treatment in 20th century America, while simultaneously serving as a successful ethnic power broker within both the American Jewish and Eastern European immigrant communities.

Abstract:

Zaman Kerajaan Majapahit merupakan cikal bakal munculnya Gapura. Pada zaman tersebut gapura memiliki fungsi sebagai pintu masuk menuju kerajaan. Pergeseran masa menunjukkan pergeseran fungsi terhadap gapura yang saat ini menjadi penanda menuju masuknya suatu kota termasuk Kota Malang. Gapura perbatasan pintu masuk di Kota Malang teridentifikasi memiliki karakter yang mirip dengan salah satu candi peninggalan Majapahit yaitu Gapura Wringin Lawang yang terletak di Mojokerto, Jawa Timur. Studi ini bertujuan untuk memvisualisasikan kesesuaian karakter visual gapura perbatasan di Kota Malang dengan Gapura Wringin Lawang. Penyandingan empat gapura perbatasan dengan Gapura Wringin Lawang dianalisis dengan mengidentifikasi elemen desain, prinsip desain, dan ciri fisik gapura. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan kesesuaian secara visual pada gapura pintu masuk di Kota Malang dengan Gapura Wringin Lawang. Kesesuaian elemen desain meliputi: garis, bentuk, massa, ruang, dan tekstur. Pada prinsip desain persamaan terdapat pada keseimbangan, kontras dan penekanan, bentuk, koneksi, makna, simbol, dan citra, pola, skala dan proporsi, ritme dan variasi. Pada bagian ciri fisik terdapat pula kesamaan yaitu bagian kepala, badan, dan kaki gapura.Kata-Kata Kunci: karakteristik, visual, gapura, penanda, batas kota VISUAL CHARACTERISTIC OF GAPURA WRINGIN LAWANG ON THE GATES OF MALANG CITY’S BOUNDARY AbstractThe era of the Majapahit Kingdom was the forerunner to the appearance of the Gapura (gate). At that time, the Gapura was built as the entrance to the kingdom. Over time, the function has shifted as a signifier of a city boundary, as found in Malang City. The boundary gate of Malang City identified has a character similar to the Majapahit heritage temples, namely the Wringin Lawang Gate located in Mojokerto, East Java. This study aims to visualize the suitability of the visual characteristics of the border gate in the northern, eastern, western and southern of Malang City with the Wringin Lawang Gate. The comparison of the four gates with Wringin Lawang Gate was analyzed by identifying its elements, principles, and physical characteristics. The results of this study indicate the visual suitability. The suitability of elements found in lines, shapes, mass, space, and textures. On the principle of design, equality identified in balance, contrast and emphasis, form, connection, meaning, symbol, and image, pattern, scale and proportion, rhythm and variation. Abstract:

This chapter, “Sacerdotal Subversion in Saint-Domingue,” provides important historical, political, and religious context for understanding the relationship between the priest and the prophetess, between Romaine-la-Prophétesse and Abbé Ouvière. Based on extensive archival research, some of which is entirely original, it does so by first outlining the history of the Jesuit mission in Saint-Domingue and the reasons for which the Society of Jesus was banished from the colony; in a word, because they were perceived by local planters and colonial administrators as fomenting revolt among slaves. It proceeds by closely analyzing the activities of eight French Catholic priests during the 1791–1792 insurgencies, four among rebelling slaves in the North Province and four among insurgent free coloreds in the West. Though scholars have analyzed the four in the North previously, none of those in the West have ever before been the subjects of academic study.

Abstract:

Earlier, I posed the question of how privileged perspectives are established on the ubiquitous and changeable climate. Enlightenment philosophes based their arguments on the impressions of travelers and colonists. Their perspectives were framed by memory, history, and folklore; their reasoning colored by environmental determinism. Early American writers followed this pattern, adding patriotic hopes to the rhetorical mix. A new approach to the climate issue was developing, however, based on projects that set out to collect large amounts of meteorological data. Thomas Jefferson, who participated vigorously in the great climate debate, was a staunch advocate of widespread, comparative, and long-term meteorological measurements. Inspired by Benjamin Franklin’s suggestion that extensive measurements of the climate would be necessary to resolve the issue, Jefferson advised his correspondents to keep weather diaries and send them to the American Philosophical Society. Throughout his life, Jefferson maintained the belief that human-induced climate change due to settlement would be proved by extensive measurements. He wrote the following to Lewis Beck in 1824: “We want . . . [an index of climate] for all the States, and the work should be repeated once or twice in a century, to show the effect of clearing and culture towards the changes of climate.” In the closing decades of the eighteenth century in Europe, and slightly later in Russia and the United States, serious attempts were made to broaden the geographic coverage of observations, standardize their collection, and publish the results. Individual observers in particular locales dutifully tended to their journals, and networks of cooperative observers gradually extended the meteorological frontiers. Much of the work was state funded and motivated primarily by desires to improve agriculture, answer health-related questions, and provide public storm warnings. Military issues and national pride were also at stake. Most of the projects were motivated, at least in part, by the hope that climatic patterns and their temporal changes would be revealed directly. The development of sytematic data collection networks occurred over several centuries. Its history can be traced to many roots, some more significant than others. Descriptive records of phenomena related to the climate, such as the opening and closing of rivers, the first and last frosts, and the blossoming and harvesting of fruit trees, existed from early times.

Abstract:

The third chapter examines how stones serve as witnesses to historical trauma in Adalbert Stifter’s realist novellas collected in Many-colored Stones, how attempts to downplay those histories and their shocking materialism only make stone even more menacing, and how the susceptibility of those stones and histories to erosion informs his stories’ susceptibility to revision. Rather than the novellas appropriating the obdurate quality of stone and then conveying this emblem of persistence onto the decidedly more fluid familial and societal institutions, those stories within stone convey a recapitulation of their own impermanence and formal incompleteness. Relatedly, the dispersed plotting and dissipated eventfulness of Stifter’s stories, particularly where they deal with the appearance of the stone, are read as a form of engagement with the problem of reading and perceiving at earth magnitude and moreover on a far more dynamic and vibrant planet than he or his contemporaries were willing to acknowledge.
