Abstract:
One aspect of colour rendering is to discern the difference between colours and colour discrimination. This is important for applications such as surgical procedures and industrial inspection. Two psychophysical experiments were conducted using computer generated images and real materials, including stone, wood and organs. The results were used to develop a colour discrimination index which includes three components: the CAM02-UCS uniform colour space, the correlated colour temperature and a set of test samples.

This study investigates the origins of specific letter–colour associations experienced by people with grapheme–colour synaesthesia. We present novel evidence that frequently observed trends in synaesthesia (e.g., A is typically red) can be tied to orthographic associations between letters and words (e.g., ‘A is for apple’), which are typically formed during literacy acquisition. In our experiments, we first tested members of the general population to show that certain words are consistently associated with letters of the alphabet (e.g., A is for apple), which we named index words. The scientific development of innovative molecular techniques has transformed the approach towards human identification. In forensic casework, the emergence of molecular phenotyping, or phenotypic prediction from DNA, has mitigated some challenges involving the unavailability of references samples for traditional forensic DNA analysis. Molecular phenotyping via SNP analysis can be used as a tool in a forensic setting to predict physical traits, such as hair, skin and eye colour, and provide investigative leads. In the terrestrial biosphere forests have a significant role as a carbon sink. Under recent climate change, it is increasingly important to detect seasonal change or ‘phenology’ that can influence the global carbon cycle. Monitoring canopies using camera systems has offered an inexpensive means to quantify the phenological changes. However, the reliability is not well known. In order to examine the usefulness of cameras to observe forest phenology, we analysed canopy images taken in two deciduous forests in Japan and England and investigate which colour index is best for tracking forest phenol

Moreover because of the multiple implications of vegetation structure dynamics on ecosystem carbon fluxes, monitoring and modeling plant phenology is also of increasing scientific interest.
