Abstract:
This chapter discusses how the definition of race varied over time and place and remained uncertain in cases judged by the courts in the antebellum era. In the 1850s, a claim of whiteness was an argument that could be made in court to obtain liberty, since a white person could not be a slave. Legal status did not rest on the same forms of proof as the census, but the two perspectives overlapped. Comparing the procedures for determining the legal status of slaves with the procedure adopted by the census for assigning the color of individuals shows the profound ambiguity of the latter. The language used by the legislators in 1850 and retained until the end of the century was clearly that of the scientific rules then in favor, based on the parts of black blood and of genealogy. However, in practice individuals were judged by their appearance rather than genealogy.

Mee, Nicholas. Celestial Tapestry. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198851950.001.0001.

Abstract:
Celestial Tapestry places mathematics within a vibrant cultural and historical context, highlighting links to the visual arts and design, and broader areas of artistic creativity. Threads are woven together telling of surprising influences that have passed between the arts and mathematics. The story involves many intriguing characters: Gaston Julia, who laid the foundations for fractals and computer art while recovering in hospital after suffering serious injury in the First World War; Charles Howard, Hinton who was imprisoned for bigamy but whose books had a huge influence on twentieth-century art; Michael Scott, the Scottish necromancer who was the dedicatee of Fibonacci’s Book of Calculation, the most important medieval book of mathematics; Richard of Wallingford, the pioneer clockmaker who suffered from leprosy and who never recovered from a lightning strike on his bedchamber; Alicia Stott Boole, the Victorian housewife who amazed mathematicians with her intuition for higher-dimensional space. The book includes more than 200 colour illustrations, puzzles to engage the reader, and many remarkable tales: the secret message in Hans Holbein’s The Ambassadors; the link between Viking runes, a Milanese banking dynasty, and modern sculpture; the connection between astrology, religion, and the Apocalypse; binary numbers and the I Ching. It also explains topics on the school mathematics curriculum: algorithms; arithmetic progressions; combinations and permutations; number sequences; the axiomatic method; geometrical proof; tessellations and polyhedra, as well as many essential topics for arts and humanities students: single-point perspective; fractals; computer art; the golden section; the higher-dimensional inspiration behind modern art.

Farb, Benson, and Dan Margalit. The Nielsen-Thurston Classification. Princeton University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.23943/princeton/9780691147949.003.0014.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explains and proves the Nielsen–Thurston classification of elements of Mod(S), one of the central theorems in the study of mapping class groups. It first considers the classification of elements for the torus of Mod(T² before discussing higher-genus analogues for each of the three types of elements of Mod(T². It then states the Nielsen–Thurston classification theorem in various forms, as well as a connection to 3-manifold theory, along with Thurston's geometric classification of mapping torus. The rest of the chapter is devoted to Bers' proof of the Nielsen–Thurston classification. The collar lemma is highlighted as a new ingredient, as it is also a fundamental result in the hyperbolic geometry of surfaces.

Abstract:
This chapter examines how Camille adapted and changed the speed, structure, and meaning of Sarah Bernhardt's live play. La Dame aux Camélias was a film made by the French Film d'Art in late 1911 and released to French, American, and English audiences in early 1912. In America, Canada, and Mexico, it was released as Camille and sold with Madame Réjane's Mme. Sans-Gêne on a states' rights basis as part of a double bill. With Bernhardt at the helm of Camille, cinematized theater became an art nouveau product par excellence. This chapter argues that Bernhardt's use of the spiral in physical action and her taste for oriental colors and objects is evidence of the broader impact that japonisme was having on the fine arts in France. It also contends that the different classes, generations, and national audiences that celebrate Camille are proof of Bernhardt's international fame just as they are evidence of her capacity to realize and express contemporary tastes and fashion.

Abstract:
This book that you have in hand was built from the master's research entitled "Environmental Education at school as a tool for the resignification of the identity of the place" concluded in the year 2019 in the Graduate Program in National Network for the Teaching of Environmental Sciences (PROFCIAMB), authored by Cliciane de Souza Meduna under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Helena Midori Kashiwagi. The research was carried out at the Escola Municipal do Campo Cipriano Librano Ramos, in Colônia Pereira, a rural area of the municipality of Paranaguá, Paraná coast. This memory game was created from photos recorded by students of basic education participating in the research. "Rediscovering the Pereira Colony" is composed of images that have meaning and are part of the historical context of the community. We understand that recognizing oneself within one's physical space goes beyond working on geography, sense of location, map interpretation, data collection and everything else that is involved in this process. It is to plant the seed that "it is possible to be "someone" in life even staying in the field" (original title of my Project to join PROFCIAMB), is to understand that many struggles are to come, that we will have many challenges to overcome, difficulties to be overcome, among them our location, but that it will not be an obstacle to continue studying and be who we want.
