It has often been suggested that terms are not prone to variation. Moreover, many standardizing organizations and terminology textbooks take a prescriptive approach to term formation and use in which they disparage variation. However, we believe that variation is not due to arbitrariness or carelessness, but rather that it is well-motivated and useful in expert discourse. We hypothesize that multidimensional classification is one of the determining factors behind term choice and we present an empirical study of the influence of multidimensional classification on term use in which we examine va

Colours are one of the most important factors in everyday life. The exact number of existing colours is not yet fully known. Nevertheless, people are known for having poor colour memory. The field of colour memory (perception and memory of unusual colours) has been very poorly researched. The aim of this study was to analyse long-term colour memory for selected associative colours, comparing it with short-term colour memory. The research approach was

The colour systems of Lower Sorbian and Upper Sorbian offer an important typological contribution. Retinex is a colour vision model introduced by Land more than 40 years ago. Since then, it has also been widely and successfully used for image enhancement. However, Retinex often introduces colour and halo artefacts. Artefacts are a necessary consequence of the per channel color processing and the lack of any strong control for controlling the locality of the processing (halos are very local errors). In this paper we relate an input to the corresponding output processed retinex image by using a single shading term which is both spatially varying and smooth and a global colour shift. This coup

ABSTRACTWe report a study of the acquisition of colour terms by speakers of Setswana, the language of Botswana in Southern Africa. This was carried out as a test of Berlin & Kay's theory of colour term universals, on a language with less than the maximum complement of eleven basic colour terms, and in order to document changes in Setswana under the impact of economic development. Seventy-seven five- to nine-year-olds were studied on two colour tasks: elicited lists and colour naming. In general the data were consistent with Berlin & Kay's theory: the rank order of frequency of correct

Abstract This paper is a corpus-based study of certain key nouns used in promotional texts describing cheese in English. A corpus of online cheese descriptions was compiled to extract lexical information regarding the characterization of cheese. All in all, 37 key nouns were identified and classified into 7 semantic categories: appearance, part, colour, aroma, texture, taste and quality ranking. All the occurrences of each key noun were analysed to obtain an exhaustive inventory of the phraseological patterns in which they occur. The results show both objective characteristics (size, shape and

Most birds, both domestic chicks and adult chickens, belong to the group of animals which have a relatively well developed mechanism for visual perception and discrimination (Hurnik et al , 1971). Furthermore, this ability extends to a differentiation between certain areas of the colour spectrum. According to Bell and Freeman (1971) fowls can more easily be trained to distinguish colours than to distinguish intensity. The present study was designed to investigate whether a response in the initial and long-term preference of broilers could be achieved by using different colour light after being re

The innate colour preference of 51 groups of 20 fry was examined at resorption of the visible yolk sac. A mixture of equal portions of blue, red, green, yellow, and unstained cod or capeling eggs were given to fry for 10-min feeding intervals after which fry stomach contents were examined and numbers of each colour of egg consumed were tabulated. Fry showed innate colour preference for red eggs; however, this could be changed to any other colour by only one previous feeding with eggs of the desired colour. This single-trial learning was retained up to 6 h after feeding but began to deteriorate

The article is devoted to the study of the dynamics of development and the current state of linguacultural meanings in colour terms that are used in English-language women’s prose. In the course of the analysis of the theoretical and methodological material, it has been revealed that the colour terms in the literary text contribute to the fact that the descriptions and pictures drawn by its author are perceived as correctly as possible by the reader, and the latter more accurately perceives the sensations and emotions experienced by the characters at different moments of the story. AbstractAn experiment is described in which 74 French subjects were asked to list colour terms within a limited time period. Results are compared with those from a similar experiment with Russian subjects. The resulting data are used as a measure of psychological salience to establish which French colour terms are basic. Particular attention is paid to the two possible French terms for brown (marron and brun), and to beige ‘beige’, which may be emerging as an additional basic term. As Russian also has an additional term for blue, both languages are particularly interesting in the light of Berl

The Japanese language has a colour term, ‘ao’, which is usually referred to in bilingual dictionaries as being the equivalent of English ‘blue’. Very often, however, it is used to describe things which English speakers would describe as being green. Granny Smith apples are ‘ao’, so are all Westerners ‘ eyes, regardless of whether they would be described as being ‘blue’ or ‘green’ in English. The sky and the sea are prototypically ‘ao’, but this term is also used to describe lawns, forests, traffic lights and unripe tomatoes. Colour and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations and mass balances were measured for seven unproductive lakes and 20 tributary streams between June 1980 and May 1992. Individual observations of colour, which measures an unknown DOC fraction assumed to be principally humic, were not good predictors of discrete DOC concentrations for any of the study sites. Long-term mean colour was, however, strongly correlated with long-term mean DOC concentrations in streams and lakes. Colour behaved differently from the total DOC pool in lakes. Lake retention and loss coefficients for colour were alw
