Many cetacean species are susceptible to mortality or serious injury from vessel collisions. Spatially explicit assessments of risk per whale can help identify potential problem areas to guide appropriate mitigation measures. Canada’s Pacific waters host high cetacean densities and intense maritime traffic, and the issue of vessel collisions has taken on a high priority in British Columbia (BC) recently due to several major industrial development applications. As a teenager, Henry was already a skilled taxidermist, his ability being appreciated by the bird author John James Audubon. On his return from the USA, Henry established a business in London at a time when owning mounted birds became fashionable.

Information relating to the distribution and abundance of species is critical for effective conservation and management. For many species, including cetacean species of conservation concern, abundance estimates are lacking, out of date and/or highly uncertain. Abstract Background: The International Prognostic Index (IPI) was first described in 1993 and is the most widely used prognostication tool in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Five independent risk factors for OS: age (≤60 yrs versus >60 yrs), stage (I/II versus III/IV), number of extranodal (EN) sites (≤1 versus >1), performance status (PS) (0-1 versus ≥2) and serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) (normal versus elevated) were used to design a prognostic model which stratified patients into 4 prognostic groups according to the number of risk factors present: low (0-1), low-intermediate

AbstractNorthern British Columbia has been identified as an important habitat for several coastal cetacean species, including humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae). This species is listed as being of “Special Concern” under Canada's Species at Risk Act, partly due to data deficiencies concerning genetic population structure and demographics in British Columbia. Anthropogenic activities threaten North Coast humpback whale populations, with particular concern for the impact of vessel noise, entanglement, and ship strikes. ObjectiveIn British Columbia today, every request for access to data for research purposes is subject to the same time-consuming and intensive review. This presents challenges for timeliness of reviews and scalability as the current process is equally labour intensive for a simple request for limited data, and a request where there is intent to contact. This approach also undermines the public’s interest in supporting research that has potential public value.

ABSTRACT Douglas Channel and the adjacent Hecate Strait (British Columbia, Canada) are part of a proposed route to ship diluted bitumen (dilbit). This study presents how two types of dilbit naturally degrade in this environment by using an in situ microcosm design based on dilbit-coated beads. We show that dilbit-associated n-alkanes were microbially biodegraded with estimated half-lives of 57–69 days. n-Alkanes appeared to be primarily degraded using the aerobic alkB, ladA and CYP153 pathways. The loss of dilbit polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was slower than of n-alkanes, with half-l

AbstractEvaluation of temporal patterns in offshore marine mammal activity through visual data collection can be impaired by light and weather conditions and the cost of ship time. The conditions‐independence and cost‐efficacy of acoustic data collection make it popular for researching the temporal patterns of wild dolphins. However, Pacific white‐sided dolphins (PWSDs) north of Southern California remain under‐researched. The paper describes the lack of coherent or consistent policies within Canada which would enable the recognition and ultimately the preservation of worthy vessels of historic importance. Current designations of vessels as “National Historic Sites” are very few, and the responsible departments within government at all levels lack a clear set of criteria for such designation. The impact of that state of affairs on the attempts at preservation and restoration of the century-old, historic steam tug Master in British Columbia is described.
