Abstract:
After Columbanus was expelled from Luxeuil, he journeyed to Paris and Metz. Theudebert, ruler of Austrasia, proposed that Columbanus found a monastery on the eastern edges of his kingdom. Columbanus consented and led his monks to the Lake Constance area, where they engaged in a failed missionary attempt. They angered the local populace with their forceful proselytization and were soon driven out of the region. Columbanus resumed his initial plan to relocate to Italy, but one of his monks, Gallus, was left behind and later set up a small hermitage near the Steinach stream. Jonas of Bobbio described the entire episode in terms of mission, but Columbanus was not literally a missionary. His Alamannian activities are best understood when compared to his other attempts at monastic foundation. This chapter explores the political undertones of the Alamannian mission, the reasons for its ultimate failure, and the later achievements of Gallus.

O'Hara, Alexander. New Rules: The Agrestius Affair and the Regula Benedicti. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190858001.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter considers changes in Columbanian monastic practices that arose with growth and expansion. Agrestius, a renegade monk, accused the deceased Columbanus and his practices of being heretical, provoking the Synod of Mâcon in 626/627. While Agrestius’s attempt failed, the synod led to a modification in Columbanian practices. The severity of Columbanus’s legislation was modified by incorporating the Regula Benedicti with Columbanian practices. Through this “mixed rule,” the Regula Benedicti—the foundational text for Western monasticism—was disseminated throughout Merovingian Gaul. These modifications, initiated by the Frankish communities, marked a fundamental break with the monastic vision of Columbanus. Columbanus is seen as an autocratic abbot with a definite idea of how monastic life was to be regulated. The Regula Benedicti and the mixed rule are seen in the context of an attempt to modify the punitive nature of Columbanus’s monasticism. In response to this crisis, Jonas wrote his Vita Columbani.

Fergusson, David, and Mark W. Elliott, eds. The History of Scottish Theology, Volume I. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198759331.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Straddling over a millennium of theological work, these essays explore the beginnings of Scottish theology from the time of the Columban church through monasticism to the era of medieval scholasticism, and then from the Reformation (1560) to later traditions of Reformed orthodoxy until c.1700. Well-known figures including Scotus, Richard of St Victor, John Mair, John Knox, Andrew Melville, Samuel Rutherford, and Henry Scougall are explored, while attention is also devoted to the ways in which Scottish theology was connected to philosophy, law, politics, church life, and patterns of spirituality. The period under review includes the foundation of five Scottish universities in St Andrews, Glasgow, Aberdeen (King’s and Marischal), and Edinburgh. The influence of Reformed confessions, particularly the Westminster Confession (1646), is treated in several essays both as a standard of uniformity and a source of controversy. Throughout the volume, the multiple connections with Europe and other parts of the British Isles are evident through exile, dispersion, international debates, and institutional links.

Charon, Rita, Sayantani DasGupta, Nellie Hermann, Craig Irvine, Eric R. Marcus, Edgar Rivera Colsn, Danielle Spencer, and Maura Spiegel. The Principles and Practice of Narrative Medicine. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199360192.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Narrative medicine is a clinical practice fortified by complex narrative skills that equip healthcare professionals to recognize, absorb, interpret, and be moved to action by patients’ and colleagues’ stories of illness. Founded in 2000 at Columbia University by the authors of this volume, narrative medicine provides rigorous conceptual frameworks and practical clinical methods to increase the accuracy and scope of clinicians’ knowledge of their patients and to deepen their therapeutic partnerships. This book presents the authors’ views, enriched by collaboration with a worldwide network of colleagues, of the workings of the narrative, relational, and reflexive processes of healthcare. Literary theory, narratology, continental philosophies, aesthetic theory, and cultural studies provide the intellectual foundations of narrative medicine, while primary care practice, patient-centered care, psychoanalysis, and interprofessional practice supply the clinical foundations. The book provides both principles and practices of the central tenets of the discipline—relationality and emotion, the philosophies of embodiment, ethicality, participatory pedagogy, close reading, creativity, and clinical practice. Each Part of this volume explains the conceptual foundations of its subject and demonstrates the pedagogic or clinical methods of putting those principles into action. Narrative medicine has grown since its inception into an international movement including many health professional disciplines, patients, families, and institutions. The overarching goal of narrative medicine is to improve the effectiveness of healthcare. This volume provides the standards of the field’s theory and practice as a guide to all who are now joining in this creative commitment to improve healthcare for all.

Jones, Gwyneth. Joanna Russ. University of Illinois Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.5622/illinois/9780252042638.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Joanna Russ (1937-2011) was an outstanding writer, critic, and theorist of science fiction at a time when female writers were marginal to the genre, and very few women, perhaps only Judith Merril and Joanna herself, had significant influence on the field. In her university teaching and in her writing she championed the integration of new social models and higher literary standards into genre works. In her review columns for the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction she dissected the masters of the New Wave with appreciation, wit, and incisive intelligence. Her experimental novel The Female Man (1975) is an essential seventies Feminist text, still relevant today; her groundbreaking academic articles are recognized as foundation studies in feminist and science fiction literary scholarship. Drawing on Jeanne Cortiel’s lesbian feminist appraisal of Russ, Demand My Writing (1999), Farah Mendelsohn’s essay collection On Joanna Russ (2009), and a wide range of contemporary sources, this book aims to give context to her career in the America of her times, from the Cold War domestic revival through the 1960s decade of protest and the Second Wave feminism of the 1970s and 1980s, into the twenty-first century, examining her novels, her remarkable short fiction, her critical and autobiographical works, her role in the science fiction community, and her contributions to feminist debate.
