Knightly tournaments emerged in the mid-11th to mid-12th centuries in France. Their origin is closely tied to combat exercises and military training, but with the increasing participation of knights and nobles, tournaments evolved beyond mere military practice. A sophisticated system of competition gradually took shape, giving rise to distinct characteristics of tournaments. During this process, the involvement of the church in knighthood ceremonies lent authority to knights through their prowess. The cross of Christ in the Middle Ages was the most powerful symbol of God’s victory over sin, death and the forces of evil, while also representing the most abject suffering and degradation of Jesus Christ, the God-Man. A simplistic reading of the evolution of the theology of the cross during this period posits a transition from the early medieval victorious and heroic Christ figure, reigning and triumphant upon the cross, to a late medieval emaciated and tortured object of pity whose ignominious death was supposed to elicit heartfelt compassion for his plight and sincere sorrow for the sin w

To medieval contemplatives, the devil posed a clear spiritual threat to those seeking to be piously devoted to Jesus. To avoid the plotting of the devil, monastics were advised to pray and study the scriptures. This they did, not only by means of biblical manuscripts, but also medieval bestiaries, in which the scriptures were incorporated alongside illustrative images, scientific information, and allegorical interpretation of the beasts of the world. Several beasts and birds were understood to signify aspects of the devil’s arsenal, especially his vices of deception, pride, and sin. These emer

The medieval military orders were religious institutions whose members had professed a life of combat and prayer that integrated them into a religious landscape sharply defined by diversity. And yet still very little is known about the military orders’ religious functions in the dioceses in which they held ecclesiastical possessions. By focusing on one military order in particular, the Order of the Temple, this study aims to achieve two goals: first, to provide a critical overview of recent scholarship in the emerging field of military order (and especially Templar) religion, and second, to ex

Medieval combat sport is a form of mixed martial art in which combatants engage in fighting using offensive and defensive equipment while dressed in full armor. The sport is considered extremely taxing, making it nearly impossible to maintain the same level of performance. However, this form of sport has not been thoroughly analyzed, and its impact on human physical response is largely unknown. To address this gap, the study reported here aimed to introduce and test a procedure for analyzing human physical responses within the framework of the sport. AbstractBetween 1890 and 1920 in the United States, Protestant ministers demonstrated increasing concern for boys between the ages of twelve and eighteen. In particular, they described a two-fold “boy problem,” defined both in terms of heightened juvenile delinquency and passive effeminacy. This essay analyzes one of the chief ways in which church leaders attempted to combat these issues: the development of Christian boy ministries rooted in the stories and themes of medieval knighthood. Looking at the use of such themes in Protestant literature and in new church organizations such as the Knig

Abstract Icelandic sagas contain a literary motif little known in other pre-modern literary traditions: the throat bite. There are 10 scenes in the sagas in which one character bites, almost bites, or contemplates biting the throat of another character. The throat bite was used by saga authors strategically and purposefully, whether to resolve conflict, similar to a more conventional murder; to signify paranormal characteristics – or lack of paranormal characteristics; or to denote interpersonal power dynamics within a saga narrative. According to similar items from the Lombard military burials of the Castel Trosino burial ground in Italy, samples from Sadon are presumably interpreted as gloves designed to protect the hand in combat conditions. Fragments of leather preserved on mail items from the Sadon may be remnants of products in the form of mittens or gloves; a rectangular piece of chain mail mesh was sewn to them from the back to protect the hand.

This contribution examines an anonymous text (Di Accia armato di tutt’arme ) addressing the handling of the axe for armoured combat, compiled in a two-volume anonymous manuscript collection of the beginning of the 16th c. This collection is of particular interest since it predates the “classical” authors of the Bolognese school of the 16th c. and marks a turning point from an earlier late Medieval tradition. Moreover the inclusion of a text dedicated to armour fighting is equally interesting since this kind of combat tends to fade away from the technical register of the next Bolognese authors.
