The beam combiner for the Big Optical Array will eventually combine 6 beams. Initially it will use the 3 way beam combiner shown in Figure 1. This combiner is assembled on a 4′x7′ super-invar breadboard. Simultaneous white light fringes have been detected on all three baselines in the laboratory. This paper describes this beam combiner and the design decisions upon which it is based.

The development of increasingly sophisticated quantum computers poses a long-term threat to current cryptographic infrastructure. This has spurred research into both quantum-resistant algorithms and how to safely transition real-world implementations and protocols to quantum-resistant replacements. This transition is likely to be a gradual process due to both the complexity and cost associated with transitioning. One method to ease the transition is the use of classical–quantum hybrid schemes, which provide security against both classical and quantum adversaries. We present a new combiner for

Partnering is a broad term used to describe an integrated team working approach; and integration means combining various elements into a whole. Partnering became popular within the UK construction industry largely as a result of two distinct 1990 reports (i.e. Latham, 1994 and Egan, 1998). The corollary of this relied to some extent on parties being dependent upon one another for success whether this arrangement was for a one off project or a longer term relationship over a number of projects. For reinforced concrete structures subjected to chlorides, carbon dioxide laden and other aggressive environments, corrosion of the reinforcing steel is seen as a global problem. Maintenance and repairs resulting primarily from premature concrete cracking and spalling have an estimated cost running to $100 billion per annum world-wide. The continual demands for greater load carrying capacity of existing infrastructure only exacerbate the problem. In practice, concrete crack width propagation is seen as one of the most important criteria for design and assessment of the long term serviceability

Abstract:
The research discussed in this progress report has been proposed to study the interface shear transfer in applications for partial-depth concrete repairs and for topping applications on precast elements. This research comprises two phases of laboratory testing. Phase 1 was developed to study the (local) interface bond strength of slab specimens through direct shear tests and direct tensile pull-off tests. Phase 2 comprises flexural tests on beam specimens to assess interface shear strength under combined bending and shear.

Nema, Arpit, and Jose Restrep. Low Seismic Damage Columns for Accelerated Bridge Construction. Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center, University of California, Berkeley, CA, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.55461/zisp3722.

Abstract:
This report describes the design, construction, and shaking table response and computation simulation of a Low Seismic-Damage Bridge Bent built using Accelerated Bridge Construction methods. The proposed bent combines precast post-tensioned columns with precast foundation and bent cap to simplify off- and on-site construction burdens and minimize earthquake-induced damage and associated repair costs. Each column consists of reinforced concrete cast inside a cylindrical steel shell, which acts as the formwork, and the confining and shear reinforcement. The column steel shell is engineered to fa

The project objective was to demonstrate the feasibility of a pipeline right-of-way defense system based on a suite of stationary sensors mounted on, and adjacent to, the pipeline. The sensor data from multiple locations along the pipe are wirelessly forwarded to a central location for further analysis. Analytics residing at a central location correlate the data from multiple sensors to alert operators to events of interest occurring in the ROW with minimal latency. The purpose of this project is to design, test, and demonstrate in the field a system that automatically monitors the right-of-wa

The goal of the work described herein is to provide PRCI and the pipeline industry further understanding of the current capabilities and limitations of combined SAR and high resolution optical satellite imagery for the monitoring of pipeline ROWs which span river crossings. Four Areas of Interests (AOIs) with pipeline ROWs that span river crossings were selected for analysis: South Saskatchewan River, Saskatchewan, Canada operated by SaskEnergy Incorporated; Thompson Creek, Louisiana, USA operated by Colonial Pipeline Company; Gila River, Arizona, USA operated by Kinder Morgan Incorporated; an

Abstract:
This work examined previously developed injection mold inserts with reduced thermal mass, with regard to lightweight construction approaches. These were optimised for oil-variothermal temperature control using simulative support. Additive manufacturing (AM), with its high degree of freedom in design, enables the implementation of individual, conformal cooling channels and can additionally support the efficiency of the variothermal process. The thermal mass of the injection mold is often a limiting factor in terms of process efficiency, which is also addressed in the analysis and optimisation c

Abstract:
The design of deep water pipelines must consider external pressure loading which is applied to the line during construction or in service when the line is evacuated. A collapse failure can occur due to this external pressure alone or external pressure in combination with tension or bending loads which are imparted to the line during construction. Thus, there is an incentive for research to more accurately define the failure envelope for combined external pressure, bending, and tension for offshore pipelines. Previous work concentrated on small scale testing and theoretical work. The purpose of
