The end of the nineteenth and start of the twentieth centuries was a period of reform in English speaking countries. This thesis examines the way in which New Zealand women missionaries to India between 1875 and 1920 embodied in their missionary activities the ideologies of reform. This thesis presents the findings of a study undertaken with Polish male prisoners in Maghaberry and Magilligan prisons in Northern Ireland. In a jurisdiction emerging from years of armed conflict, the prison system is currently undergoing changes which attempt to deal with the structural problems stemming from that conflict's legacy.
