Abstract:
Balzac’s realistic technique relies mainly on the verisimilitude of a huge variety of elements (characters, descriptions, encyclopedic knowledge, etc.), among which language stands out as one of the mainstays of La Comedie humaine in general and Illusions perdues — the key novel — in particular. This paper highlights first the crucial role of Balzac’s singular vocabulary (technical terms, slang words, etc.) for the success of his ambitious realist project, the variety and complexity of his language being a reflection of the variety and complexity of the new society he aims to describe. Abstract:

Johannesburg, January 1973<br>The purpose of th is thesis is to correct the widespread misconception th a t children and adolescents are of small Importance in the world of Balzac's Comedie humaine. My method of procedure was not the traditional one. Abstract:
Abstract How I moved from more “classical” works, of music and literature, to Balzac: why Balzac came to matter, and how reading individual works of his Human Comedy leads the reader to want more, to move on to further reading. The technique of “returning characters” that Balzac discovered while writing Père Goriot leads us from one notlve to another, and gives the fictional persons who reappear from novel to novel a new weight from the stories they carry with them. Main example in this chapter is Eugène de Rastignac, one of the best known and most important characers in the Human Comedy.
