Brown, Erica Clare. "Comedy and the middlebrow novel : Elizabeth Taylor and Elizabeth von Arnim." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2010. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/19402/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the critical reception of the novels of Elizabeth von Arnim (1866-1941) and Elizabeth Taylor (1912-1975) as part of a 'feminine middlebrow'. They are frequently read as offering merely light entertainment and an implicit endorsement of a conservative status quo, and I argue that this is because their depiction of the pain of life and their challenges to the status quo are concealed by their use of comedy and irony. My analysis of the use of comedy offers a new understanding of these novels. Utilising Freud's theory of 'joke-work' I demonstrate that the sharing of jokes requires shared attitudes and repressions as well as shared knowledge; what Freud terms 'psychical accord'. These comedic texts, therefore, speak to a very specific community of readers, in ways that appear to elude those critics who would dismiss the novels as limited or trivial. The imagined reader of these novels is an educated, middle-class woman, and through my close reading of selected novels by von Arnim and Taylor I detail the layers of intertextuality, comedy and irony that she is expected to be able to understand and reconstruct. These novels are innovative in form. They self-consciously play with the romance and romantic comedy genres, and with specific 19th century narratives, especially those of Jane Austen and the Brontes. They utilise comedy to address profoundly serious subjects, and in the case of von Arnim's Vera (1921), innovatively synthesize comedy and horror. They build complex webs of irony that can be resistant to interpretation, particularly in Taylor's Palladian (1946), which meditates on the meaning and value of fiction. My analysis of this innovation challenges the perception of these middlebrow novels as straightforwardly realist, and shows them to be not merely light entertainment, but painfully acute commentaries on the cruel realities of domestic life, especially for women.

Kelley, Alita. "Entropic comedy and the postmodern vision: An analysis of "Un mundo para Julius" by Alfredo Bryce Echenique, a poststructural approach, with a translation of the novel into English." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/186047.

Full text
Abstract:
This first full length reading of the Peruvian Alfredo Bryce Echenique's 1970 novel Un mundo para Julius approached from a deconstructionist viewpoint shows how prior misreadings have led to its being interpreted primarily as a realist work with innovative passages. Through extended close reading, it is shown to be an early Latin American example of postmodern entropic comedy. Parody and the ludic aspects of the novelist's art in the work present a view of reality in which all metanarratives are negated. An analysis is included of deconstructionist theory/strategies showing deconstruction's contribution through non-belief in the primary text to recognition of the viability of translation studies as an academic discipline. The first translation into English of Bryce's novel accompanies the dissertation and is drawn upon extensively for interpretation of passages that have previously caused interpretative problems. The prominence of the comic in postmodern literature is discussed, along with the nature and provoking of laughter. Explanations are suggested for Bryce's highly comic novel not being read as such; rather, in prior criticism the tragic has been foregrounded at the expense of the comic elements. It is suggested that Bryce's and other Latin American novels of the 1960s and early 1970s be viewed as marking a transition from modernism to postmodernism, putting Latin American literature in line with the novelistic mainstream worldwide. The boom, far from being a new move in Latin American literature of the 1960s, is seen as belated critical recognition of a modernism which dates back at least to the 1920s, with sporadic manifestations of the postmodern spirit existing there from the same time. Since the nature of deconstruction is to affirm that no definite conclusions or final readings may be drawn, this dissertation is put forth in the spirit that it be conducive to refutation and to foster further readings of the work of Bryce and neglected modernist and postmodernist Latin American writers whose work should by now be seen as part of world literature and not as a local or exotic variant.

Abstract:
A fictional novel utilizing third person limited narration from the perspective of the primary character, Ilya Kollide, who narrates the story as though it were happening in his head as it occurred, with frequent embellishments. He has come to live near an old mansion on the Trans-Siberian Railroad, named Neimasaurus, to find an antiquated, dusty world of faded aristocracy. Temporarily orphaned at the age sixteen by the recent death of his parents, he has traveled four thousand miles to live with his last living relative, an uncle named Demetri, whom he has never met. The year is 1990, only this is not a world where the rule of the Tsar was supplanted by the Soviet Union. Instead, it is a logical exploration of what Russia might resemble, had communism never taken root. While the fantastical may or may not occur, depending upon how the reader chooses to interpret the point of view of the narrator, the setting in and of itself is not meant to be fantastical. Ilya discovers that all the servants who work there are deaf, as is his uncle and his own now deceased parents, whom he carries around in an urn after mixing their ashes together. While working at the great estate of the Neimasaurus family, Ilya discovers a surprising numbers of stories and people who both parallel his own experiences and serve as allegorical warnings toward his future mistakes in life. He becomes obsessed with the idea that he is to blame for his parents' death and sets out on a quest to bring redemption to the wounded inhabitants of the estate, only to discover that not everyone wants to be helped. In fact, they want him dead. They see him as an allegory, just as he sees them. To the young man Shoji Yamano, Ilya represents everything he was, and can no longer be. As such a reflection, he resolves to shatter Ilya like a mirror. The novel charts Ilya's personal growth from a neurotic wreck, incapable of normal interaction with people, to a young man capable of not just self-sacrifice, but an understanding of what it actually means to literally sacrifice himself for the well-being of someone he barely knows. He learns to value time spent with others rather than dwelling within a narcissistic and lonely fantasy world.?

In Grande sertão: veredas (1956) the serious tone of the narrative is mixed with the appearance of comic elements that, although sparse, are part of the structure of the narrative. This study shows how manifestations of comedy appears in this novel, such as procedures, techniques, comic structures, jokes, as well as the representation of laughter, by Guimarães Rosa, connecting these elements to the plot. To do so, it starts from a theoretical review on the comic and the laughable in Aristóteles (2008), Bergson (2007), Freud (1977), Jolles (1976), Propp (1992), Minois (2003), as well as critical discussions of Candido (1990), Galvão (1986), Nunes (2013), Utéza (1994) and Hansen (2000). In addition, the function performed by the comic processes present in this narrative allows us to understand the role of comicity in its different forms in the Rosa’s novel. Thus, it is possible to discuss relations between the serious and the comic tone, and the constant relieving of tensions. The Rosa’s linguistic re-creations, according to Freud's discussions (1977), create pleasure in times of tension, bringing relief on, which allows not only the reader to continue reading, but also that the narrative, although dense due to the tensions of jagunços’ battles, flows with moments of distension. Yet the functionality goes beyond that: the relativization of values and behaviors that rethink the usual logic of the world may be the most recurrent. In this case, according to this study, the comic derives from a reversal of cultural logic and contributes to the overcoming of metaphysical concerns through laughter.

Thesis, Poitiers, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012POIT5020/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of our research is to define extravagance by looking at this notion in context when it experienced its first literary successes, that is from 1623 (with L'Histoire comique de Francion by Sorel) to 1666 (Le Misanthrope by Molière and Le Roman bourgeois by Furetière). We therefore aim at showing how it illustrated sociocultural, literary and esthetical issues in the early seventeenth century. Our research is carried along pluridisciplinary lines: extravagance deals at the same time with medicine, the history of cures and the imprisonment of the insane and the philosophical question of reversible links between madness and wisdom, and this is why I am studying these fields while analysing literary representations of madness. The extravagant's disorder disturbs his imagination without really impairing his understanding. Uncontrolled knowledge and noxious readings, which are often novels, are responsible for his madness. Unlike the fool, his mind is not empty, but it blurs the way in which he perceives the world. Such mental confusion also makes him move away from accepted social behaviours. As opposed to the model of the honest man as defined by treatises of courtesy, the extravagant man cannot abide by proprieties and polite codes. This perspective leads me to formulate a new interpretation of the comic characters we can find in comedies and comic novels from the 1620-1660 era, such as the braggart, the pedant, the countryman, and so on

Abstract:
Guardians of Freedom is my attempt to make sense out of my time spent in uniform, in the only way that is appropriate: hyperbolic comedy. It is a story of Specialist Henry, a disillusioned soldier returning from one deployment in the Global War on Terror and facing another. Thoughts of making a difference and changing the world dashed, he wants nothing more than to be rid of the uniform and live an admittedly pointless life. He is joined by the various characters of Bravo Company, the deploying unit which has been used as a dumping point for medically-impaired soldiers. Outwardly, the story is about the bureaucracy and inanity of military life in a time of prolonged war. Hopefully though, there is a glimpse at the very real people that I met and loved and who, like me, were forced to find a way to survive and live in an environment that’s sole purpose revolves around death.

Hinchcliffe, Richard. "Empty heroics, low comedy and pointless death : structures of melancholy in the early novels of Kurt Vonnegut." Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 2000. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/20770/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores structures of melancholy in five of Kurt Vonnegut's early novels, Player Piano, The Sirens of Titan, Mother Night, Slaughterhouse-Five and Breakfast of Champions. The thesis attempts to give new readings to each of the novels by drawing on critical approaches to melancholy and by viewing each text as being subject to contemporary cultural influences. In particular, the thesis maps how each of the novels comments on human progress through a combination of historical, scientific, cultural, social and political paradigms. In the chapters on The Sirens of Titan and Mother Night the protagonist is seen as suffering from a number of melancholic complaints that are closely related to schizophrenia, while the narratives as a whole exploit this splintering of the self to suggest a variety of allegorical readings. The chapters on Player Piano, Slaughterhouse-Five and Breakfast of Champions discuss how the Puritan foundations of American culture play a major part in the construction of the self through the establishment of the Protestant work ethic. These chapters also attempt to expose how many of the ideological concepts that adhere to work, progress and capitalism have melancholic consequences for all involved. Throughout the thesis the relationship between reality and representation, language and authority is seen as being crucial to understanding the depth of Vonnegut's early novels and the way in which each novel deconstructs established values and subverts readers' expectations. Occasionally, the thesis discusses the novels' poststructural concerns as appearing to precipitate melancholy within both readers and characters. However, the thesis also explores how melancholy has been seen historically to galvanise the soul and build up, from the depths of depression, a renewal of spirit. Overall, the thesis shows how melancholy is a constituent part of Vonnegut's novels, connecting his work to the tradition in American melancholic writing created by the founders of the nation. This thesis traces the persistence of this melancholic note within selected Vonnegut novels and its connections with other themes identified within his work.

Abstract:
Of all the French authors in the XIXth century, Balzac was the best known in Central and Eastern Europe. His reception was less remarkable before 1918, quiet in 1918-1948 and glorious in 1948-1989. Why did Balzac obtain this almost monopoly? Why Balzac and not Flaubert, Zola or Maupassant? We analysed the postscripts and the criticisms of his masterpieces as well as the historical and cultural context. After 1948 the communist power is searching for someone who they can lean on in literature and Balzac emerged victoriously. His powerful era is visible in all the allied countries of the USSR. His work is the subject of ten thousand of the prints, the national publishing houses compete for him, subsidize his literary promotion by linking him with Lenin or very often with Marx, Engels who serve as a surety to open a great way for him. In forty years, Balzac is everywhere. After 1989, the classical literature is already installed but it is also its end. Balzac is no longer fed by the publishing houses: they become private and publish what they want. Only five books are edited. Point of interest of the author of the Human Comedy, however, the Slovak culture is impregnated in his memory

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis project examines the work of three female Nigerian authors: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Sefi Atta and Chika Unigwe. They are part of a growing number of young African writers who are receiving international acclaim and challenging narratives that have long defined the continent in pejorative terms. They question what it means to be female and African in a transcultural, global world but counter discourses that are both restrictive and prescriptive. Their female characters are not imaged in binary terms as either victims or villains. For all three writers, the African story has to be told in its entirety incorporating what some may argue are negative stereotypes but doing so in a manner that examines and undermines those same stereotypes. For the purposes of the thesis, I focus on their first novels: Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus, Atta’s Everything Good Will Come and Unigwe’s On Black Sisters’ Street. Chapter One examines Purple Hibiscus and argues that the novel is much more than a coming of age story or, as some critics have posited, an allegory of the postcolonial state. Chapter Two highlights Atta’s use of fairly familiar feminist theories but grounds them in the lived realities of the African city. All three authors are concerned with issues of violence and death. Unigwe’s novel, which forms the focus of Chapter Three, offers a critical perspective on how both of those themes intersect with the increasing commercialisation of global culture. Her characters are female sex workers whose lives are irrevocably altered by the murder of one of their colleagues. I conclude by arguing that the three novels offer a nuanced if not necessarily new understanding of the various social, economic and political forces that continue to shape the lives of women on the continent.

Faner, Canet Maria Rosa.

Full text
Abstract:
The Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) is the genetic region that contains the loci more polymorphic of the genome. These loci are involved in the antigenic presentation to the T lymphocytes, defining in general the immune response and specifically including the histocompatibility between donor and acceptor in organ transplantation.
There are different techniques that are used for typing the polymorphism of the MHC and also for the analysis of the functionality of these molecules. But the main techniques used for typing in Histocompatibility laboratories have still some limitations that can be solved. In reference to this point this thesis describes the usage of real time PCR with hybridization probes as an assay to be used for HLA typing.
As a first approach to prove the validity of the methodology, an HLA-B27 typing assay by real time PCR with FRET probes has been optimized. The described HLA-B27 typing protocol uses three reactions with FRET probes that can achieve a medium-high resolution of the alleles in the Caucasoid population, at the same time alleles non associated with Spondylarthropathies are differentiated. After proving the validity of the real time PCR with FRET probes for a reduced HLA polymorphism, an approach based in the same methodology for typing of the HLA-B locus with a low-medium resolution has been developed. In third place, for HLA typing resolution the usage of the FRET probes has been compared to the usage of Taqman probes. With this aim a typing approach for the HLA-DRB locus with Taqman probes has been developed.
The typing methodologies based on real time PCR that have been developed show several advantages when compared to the traditional DNA based typing techniques, the main are on reference to the time required for the developing of the assays and to the elimination of all post-PCR steps. At the same time the evaluation of the three described typing techniques has shown that FRET probes work better to solve the HLA polymorphism.
In this thesis MHC class II tetramers have been developed to improve the tools for the functional study of the non classical HLA-DRB loci, concretely of the more frequent alleles of DRB3. This methodology allowed the evaluation of the T CD4+ cell response that recognizes antigens in the context of these HLA molecules, showing the relevancy of this locus in the antigenic presentation.

This dissertation is inscribed into a zone of interval between critics and literary creation, that is, between the critical discourse about a work, Before the past: silence comes from Araguaia (2012), by my authorship, and the potential creation of another work - Stone house. Its objective is to speculate possible points of view for the narrator of a potential narration stablished around what is to be said by another one, already published: the novel Before the past, inscribed in the post-dictatorial Brazilian literature. Our methodological strategy is structured around two cores. The first one embraces the analysis of Before the past: the silence which comes from Araguaia, which was based on the concepts of narrator, vestige and threshold according to Wayne Booth and Walter Benjamin studies. The second one is centered on the work in progress - Stone house and has as conceptual axis the notions of archive, act and potency came from Michel Foucault e Giorgio Agamben studies. From this context, emerges the proposition of giving ear and trying to identify, describe and analyze Before the past narrative voice procedures, departing from a site where we are settled simultaneously as a researcher and a reader who scrutinizes her own work. In Part II, the architectural mechanisms of Stone house are investigated by a reflexive voice, which mixes first and third persons that narrate the creation research construction in the form of a writer s book , in the light of the book Passages, by Walter Benjamin. As a result, we delineated a sort of literary cartography of proto-book, which is Stone house, based on collecting and organizing archives made of documental vestiges, memories, audiovisual interviews, photographs, written and oral narratives about Brazilian military dictatorship, and the disappearing and death through a fragile narration which tries to keep itself in a threshold between said and non said, creation and (un)creation

The design of cultural centre is situated in part Kozia Hôrka( well-known city swimming pool), in its advantage takes natural scenery and calm atmosphere of place. Into action of performance brings a message in form of body of reservoir, function of centre is divided into small parts placed in area Kozia Hôrka. Orientation of objects comes mainly from local natural ispirations. Complex is multifunctional in concept, counts with several sorts of culture - sports events. Whereby the main function of swimming pool is preserved and added for higher comfort of inhabitants. Architecture of objects comes from idea of floating leaf on water level and body of reservoir. Objects stylizely illustrate this idea. The design takes the game of solids of organic and strictly ortogonal shapes. Two mutual opposites, in interaction. Objects smoothy and with respect encroach the environment, which is enough marked by human. Simplicity in used materials ( glass, steel, wood ) give transparency and purity to whole solution.

Abstract:
In Peru since the end of the last century, there has been a surge in new interest in cuisine in the country, due to the so-called Peruvian gastronomic boom. The novel Cocinero en su tinta employs this cultural phenomenon as its setting to articulate the personal conflicts of Rembrandt Bedoya, a recognized Peruvian chef, who searches for a récipe that represents the cultural polyhedral reality of his country to be presented in Madrid. This search is coupled gradually with the necessity of making peace with the memory of his father and establishing a relationship with his evasive and unattainable lover. The objective of this thesis is to investigate and analyze how the personal and national journeys of the protagonist is the recurring theme that links the narrative discourse. The first chapter is dedicated to analyzing the cultural importance of food in relation to the established ties with the protagonist, who identifies as much as a Peruvian as he does as chef. In the second chapter, Rembrandt’s personal and national conflicts are explored deeper, as well as his desire to find originality through his relationships with the other characters, estableshing and analyzing his search for the double meaning of origins. Key Words: Peruvian gastronomic boom, identity, creole from Lima, Gustavo Rodríguez
