Abstract:
At intersections in which the left-turn bay does not have sufficient length or the left-turn volume is relatively high, left-turn vehicles may spill back and block the adjacent through traffic. This paper aims to develop quantitative measures of the left-turn spillback, and by using the results on spillback probability, develop a suitable signal control strategy. We first develop an improved queue length estimation method for vehicles in the left-turn bay based on Comert and Cetin’s general queue length estimation method with connected vehicles, after which we propose a probabilistic model to measure the left-turn spillback probability at an intersection in a connected environment. The model accuracy is validated with results from microscopic traffic simulation. The effect of bay length is also studied. In the end, a signal control demonstration is presented to show the efficiency of the proposed method in signal control.

Abstract Summary Searching for homology in the vast amount of sequence data has a particular emphasis on its speed. We present a completely rewritten version of the sensitive homology search method COMER based on alignment of protein sequence profiles, which is capable of searching big databases even on a lightweight laptop. By harnessing the power of CUDA-enabled graphics processing units, it is up to 20 times faster than HHsearch, a state-of-the-art method using vectorized instructions on modern CPUs. Availability and implementation COMER2 is cross-platform open-source software available at https://sourceforge.net/projects/comer2 and https://github.com/minmarg/comer2. It can be easily installed from source code or using stand-alone installers. Abstract:
The incidence of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) after pulmonary embolism (PE) is relevant for management decisions but is currently unknown. We performed a meta-analysis of studies including consecutive PE patients followed for CTEPH. Study cohorts were predefined as “all comers”, “survivors” or “survivors without major comorbidities”. CTEPH incidences were calculated using random effects models. We selected 16 studies totalling 4047 PE patients who were mostly followed up for >2-years. In 1186 all comers (two studies), the pooled CTEPH incidence was 0.56% (95% CI 0.1–1.0). In 999 survivors (four studies) CTEPH incidence was 3.2% (95% CI 2.0–4.4). In 1775 survivors without major comorbidities (nine studies), CTEPH incidence was 2.8% (95% CI 1.5–4.1). Both recurrent venous thromboembolism and unprovoked PE were significantly associated with a higher risk of CTEPH, with odds ratios of 3.2 (95% CI 1.7–5.9) and 4.1 (95% CI 2.1–8.2) respectively. The pooled CTEPH incidence in 12 studies that did not use right heart catheterisation as the diagnostic standard was 6.3% (95% CI 4.1–8.4).The 0.56% incidence in the all-comer group probably provides the best reflection of the incidence of CTEPH after PE on the population level. The ∼3% incidences in the survivor categories may be more relevant for daily clinical practice. Studies that assessed CTEPH diagnosis by tests other than right heart catheterisation provide overestimated CTEPH incidences.

Castelli, Thibaut. Thesis, Paris 10, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA100118.

Abstract:
We intend to develop a new understanding of the trade between the Greek cities of the western coast of the Black Sea and the rest of the Greek world during the Classical and Hellenistic periods. By studying these cities from Nikonion to Apollonia, from an economic perspective, this thesis aims to discover if they have similar economic characteristics and if they follow the same rythm of development. This may help to see how these cities, which have intense trade relations can be grouped into a cohesive economic unit. We will also identify in these exchanges the actors and the traded products, some of which (cereals, fish, slaves ...) have left little traces in the archaeological, epigraphic and literary sources. The research includes the relationship with the population and kingdoms of the hinterland that affect the exploitation of rural areas of these cities and are trade partners. This research will compare the exchanges with other parts of the Black Sea, including the northern part where the Athenian influence is important during the 4th century. The goal is to compare the flow observed in the Pontic area with those existing in other regions of Greece

DiSanti, Michael Antonio. "The production and spatial distribution of neutral and ionized water vapor in comet P/Halley." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/184644.

Abstract:
This study addressed the problem of water vapor production and distribution in comet P/Halley, based upon interpretation of observational data obtained during the recent 1985-86 apparition. The data was acquired using the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory charge-coupled device (CCD) on the 154-cm Catalina telescope of the University of Arizona Observatories. Our data acquisition system was employed in two modes. The long-slit (∼200") spectroscopy mode covered the wavelength range 5200-10400 Å at a spectral resolution ∼14 Å. The narrow band filter imaging mode allowed two-dimensional mapping of selected cometary emission features, as well as the continuum, with a field of view of roughly 10 arc-min. Both neutral and ionized (H₂O⁺) water species were studied, with emphasis on the ion distribution. This involved comparing long-slit spatial profiles obtained ∼UT 1986 March 05.5, as well as cuts across filter images (∼ March 06.5) centered on the H₂O⁺ 0,8,0-band emission, with the Vega-1 spacecraft in situ ion density measurements (∼ March 06.3). Our March 05 spectroscopic data revealed a central dip, of order 30% relative to the profile peak, in H₂O⁺ column density in the inner coma (inside ∼ 2 x 10⁴ km from the nucleus), which filled in farther tailward. Similarly the BD - 3 plasma detector aboard Vega-1 measured a decrease in local ion density, of roughly 60% at the closest approach distance (∼ 9000 km sunward of the nucleus), relative to the inbound maximum density at R ≃ 12000 km from the nucleus. These results suggest a bimodal flow of ions out of the coma and/or an extended region over which the H₂0 molecules were being ionized. Our imaging data showed that, while the falloff in ion density was relatively rapid sunward of the nucleus, it was much more gradual in the anti-solar direction. This is due to the solar wind sweeping ions from the head of the comet into the plasma tail, whose width was of order 10⁵ km in the inner coma, diverging slowly and breaking up into a ray pattern farther tailward. The distribution of neutral water was mapped out using the [O I] λ6300 emission as diagnostic probe. In contrast to the ions, the H₂0 molecules were mainly confined to the inner few x 10⁴ km of the coma, and exhibited a much more symmetrical distribution. Integration of the [O I] slit profiles, assuming azimuthal symmetry, allowed calculation of the H₂0 production rate, which ranged from ∼ 10²⁸ molecules s⁻¹, when Halley was at a distance r≳ 2 AU from the sun, to a value of ∼ 1.5 x 10³⁰ molecules s⁻¹ for 1986 March 05 (r ≃ 0.78 AU). Using the latter production rate, and assuming a 100/1 production ratio of H₂0/ H₂O⁺, a spatially-averaged, tailward flow speed of ions out of the inner coma, < v⁺ > ≃ 16 km s⁻¹, was derived by integrating our March 05 H₂O⁺ profile, for which the slit was oriented across the coma, just tailward of the nucleus.

Abstract:
The purpose of the present work is to study the correlation between the gas production rates and heliocentric magnitudes of comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp), in the pre-perihelion phase as well as in the post-perihelion phase. The evolutions of magnitudes and gas production rates of H2O (water), OH (hydroxil radical) and CO (carbon monoxide), along the approach to and leave of the comet from the Sun, are analyzed. For this analysis, we used 11,734 visual magnitude estimates, extracted from ICQ (International Comet Quarterly) and 88 observations of carbon monoxide (Biver, private communication (2007); DiSanti et al. (2001); Jewitt et al. (1996)), covering the range of heliocentric distances from rh = 7.464 AU (in the pre-perihelion phase) to rh = 14.070 AU (in the post-perihelion phase). It is shown that the activity of Hale-Bopp (average surface temperature ~ 110 K) beyond 6.3 AU from the Sun is controlled by CO emission (sublimation temperature ~ 24 K) rather than by H2O (sublimation temperature ~ 152 K). This result is consistent with millimeter-wave observations of Biver et al. (1996) and Jewitt et al. (1996), made at 6.5 AU.

The secondary metabolites of lichens are responsible for most of their biological activities. Many of these compounds exhibit significant antineoplastic activity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro cytotoxic and genotoxic activities of organic extracts and purified barbatic acid from Cladonia salzmannii Nyl. The organic extracts were obtained from liquenic thallus (22 g) previously cleaned and dried with the solvents diethyl ether, chloroform and acetone, through hot exhausted method in a Soxhlet apparatus. The barbatic acid was purified from the ether extract (1.3 g). Chemical analysis of the organic extracts and purified BAR was performed by Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). The purity of purified BAR was observed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The cytotoxic activity of the organic extracts and purified BAR was determined by the MTT method [3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-Diphenyltetrazolium Bromide] and IPBC (Cytokinesis-Block Proliferation Index). The genotoxic potential of the organic extracts and purified BAR was determined by the micronucleus test and comet assay. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was used as diluting solvent of the samples in all biological tests. The results for IC50 demonstrated significant cytotoxic potential to the ether extract (Ext E) (50 μg/mL) against the cell lines NCI-H292 (IC50: 29,91 μg/mL), HEp-2 (IC50: 26,75 μg/mL) and HL-60 (IC50: 3,59 μg/mL) and to the purified BAR (25 μg/mL) against the cell lines HEp-2 (IC50: 15,79 μg/mL) and MCF-7 (IC50: 18,28 μg/mL). However, the assessment of cytotoxicity considering the Cytokinesis-Block Proliferation Index (IPBC) showed cytotoxic activity for purified BAR at all concentrations tested (5, 10, 20 and 40 μg/mL) and for all organic extracts (50 μg/mL) against Ehrlich carcinoma cells. However, for Sarcoma 180 only BAR purified at a concentration of 40 μg/mL and ether and chloroform extracts (50 μg/mL) were considered cytotoxic. The micronucleus test (MN) showed that the purified BAR at a concentration of 5 μg/mL showed no genotoxic potential in both tumor cell lines. Furthermore, the chloroform extract and purified BAR at a concentration of 10 μg/mL were not considered genotoxic for Sarcoma 180. In the comet assay, all compounds tested induced DNA damage in both tumor lines. Based on the results, it is considered that the organic extracts and the BAR purified from C. salzmannii (Nyl). exhibit cytotoxic and genotoxic activity front of the tested tumor cell lines.

In recent years, the use of pesticides in agriculture has been steadily increasing, and associations between exposure to agricultural chemicals and DNA damage and cancer have been reported. Brazil is one of the world leaders in pesticide use; however, studies that evaluate the impact of pesticide exposure on cancer incidence and mortality are very scarce in the Brazilian population. The alkaline comet assay and the chromosome aberration (CA) test were used to evaluate primary DNA damage in the peripheral blood lymphocytes of workers exposed to a complex mixture of pesticides in two small rural communities in the municipalities of Tianguà and Ubajara, located in the western part of Cearà State (Northeast Brazil), which are among the largest agricultural areas of the state. The comet assay showed that the damage index and damage frequency observed in the exposed groups were significantly higher in relation to the controls (P < 0.05). On the other hand, no differences were detected regarding structural and numerical CAs in the communities evaluated. Additionally, the observed levels of DNA strand breaks and frequencies of CAs, stratified for exposure time, were not statistically different for individuals of either rural community. Our results suggest that the damages caused by pesticides in our study area were not great enough to induce permanent mutations or to interfere with mitotic apparatus formation; minimal pesticide damages could have undergone cellular repair, explaining the absence of structural and numerical CAs. Analyses of water from the reservoir that serves as a source for irrigation of crops and supplies the cities of the region did not detect contamination by pesticides.

Abstract:
This study aimed to establish a citogenotoxic method, the comet assay, adapted to the meristematic cells from propagule roots of red mangrove, Rhizophora mangle, for use in studies of genotoxicity in marine environments. Experiments were carried out to test two ways of root germination, four different nuclei extraction solutions, two lysis solutions and without lysis, two periods of exposure to lysis, two periods of unwinding, two periods of electrophoresis and the interaction of two lysis conditions with two different times of unwinding. Experiments on validation of the method were performed by exposing the nuclei to four different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. The results showed that it is possible to obtain comets with nuclei extracted from the root of propagules of Rhizophora mangle and the validation data showed a dose-dependent relationship between the damage index and the concentration of the genotoxic agent tested. The best parameters to obtain comets using the method adapted by us are: PBS or saline 12‰ as extraction solution, exposure to alkaline lysis for 60 minutes, 5 minutes of unwinding and electrophoresis in buffer pH> 13, 0,8V/cm, 230mA for 20 min at 4ºC.

Abstract:
Historic-geographical and Typo-morphological assessment of Lefke town, North Cyprus Sanaz Nezhadmasoum¹, Nevter Zafer Comert² Department of Architecture. Eastern Mediterranean University. Famagusta. North Cyprus.Via Mersin 10. Turkey E-mail: sanaz.nezhadmasoum@gmail.com, nzafer@gmail.com Keywords: Historic-geographic approach, Typo-morphology, Urban form, Lefke town Conference topics and scale: Urban morphological methods and techniques Morphological analysis in cities have been employed to conduct the research on the urban form and fabric of the place, that helps to determine the conservation plans or strategies of towns that reveal clues to their own history (Whithand,2001). Such analysis methods are a process that reviews the evolution and evaluation of towns throughout history. This paper focuses on, Conzen’s and Caniggia’s ideas, MRG Conzen’s historic-geographical approaches (1968) on planning level and Caniggia’s typo-morphological process (2001) on architectural level. Those methodologies help to understand the transformation procedure of different regions of city throughout the years and recovering how the city elements and urban hierarchy are interrelated. Additionally, the focus of this paper is to study the town’s morphological transformations, regarding its spatial, geographical and historical combinations. Within this context, Geographical and historical surveys done on the whole town of Lefke, in north-west Cyprus, and a detailed explanation on the typo-morphological analyses of some particular regions will be given in this article. One of the significant character that makes the town unique is its historical background which lay down with an organic urban pattern from Ottoman period. Lefke town was first formed with a medieval character, and through centuries of functional and physical transformations, has been highly influenced by British extensions, which were either prearranged modifications affected by socio- natural, economic, and political situations, or instinctive and spontaneous changes. All these historical factors, along with its geographical features, make Lefke an interesting case to be studied with an urban typo-morphological approach. Abstract:
An important source of information on the physical properties of small bodies is the polarization characteristics of the light scattered by these bodies. The most important polarization characteristic is the phase dependence of polarization. Over the next 2 years, 18 comets were observed. For many comets, polarimetric data have been obtained for the first time. Based on the results of observations, the phase dependence of the polarization of the comet continuum was plotted.
