Herr, Ranjoo Seodu. "Can Transnational Feminist Solidarity Accommodate Nationalism? Reflections from the Case Study of Korean “Comfort Women”." Hypatia 31, no. 1 (2016): 41–57. http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/hypa.12213.

Abstract:
This article aims to refute the “incompatibility thesis” that nationalism is incompatible with transnational feminist solidarity, as it fosters exclusionary practices, xenophobia, and racism among feminists with conflicting nationalist aspirations. I examine the plausibility of the incompatibility thesis by focusing on the controversy regarding just reparation for Second World War “comfort women,” which is still unresolved. The Korean Council at the center of this controversy, which advocates for the rights of Korean former comfort women, has been criticized for its strident nationalism and held responsible for the stalemate. Consequently, the case of comfort women has been thought to exemplify the incompatibility thesis. I argue against this common feminist perception in three ways: first, those who subscribe to the incompatibility thesis have misinterpreted facts surrounding the issue; second, the Korean Council's nationalism is a version of “polycentric nationalism,” which avoids the problems of essentialist nationalism at the center of feminist concerns; and, third, transnational feminist solidarity is predicated on the idea of oppressed/marginalized women's epistemic privilege and enjoins that feminists respect oppressed/marginalized women's epistemic privilege. To the extent that oppressed/marginalized women's voices are expressed in nationalist terms, I argue that feminists committed to transnational feminist solidarity must accommodate their nationalism.

Abstract:
The authors studied the impact of indoor air humidity in the range of 60% to 90% on building user perception in the temperature range of 26 to 28 °C. The research thesis was put forward that the impact of humidity on indoor air quality dissatisfaction of building users in a warm and humid indoor environment is greater than that indicated in thermal comfort models. The presented experiment examined the indoor air quality perception of n = 28 subjects in the test chamber of a nearly zero energy building under ten environmental conditions, together with a thermal comfort assessment. The authors developed an experimental relation for predicting building users’ satisfaction based on the Weber–Fechner law, where the predicted percentage of dissatisfied users (PD) is determined by means of air enthalpy (h), PD = f(h). The obtained results confirmed the sated thesis. Additionally, the intersection points of the experimental function and isotherms resulting from the Fanger model are presented, where the thermal comfort assessment starts to indicate lower user dissatisfaction results than experimental values. The authors recommend the experimental equation for humid air enthalpies in the range of 50 to 90 kJ/kg. The indoor air quality assessment based on the enthalpy value is simple and can be used to determine the overall Indoor Environmental Quality index of a building (IEQindex).

Abstract:
This paper presents a case study of a Hollywood blockbuster movie called Cast Away (2000). The analysis is based on two anthropomorphism theories called Familiar Thesis and Comfort Thesis. Categorised under adventure drama, Cast Away (2000) depicts a story of a Federal Express executive named Chuck Noland who survives a plane crash and is stranded on an uninhabited island in the Pacific for four years. Cut off from the modern world, Chuck adapts to the harsh environment of the tropical island by salvaging FedEx packages washed up on the beach. One of the packages contains a Wilson volleyball which later in the plot becomes Chuck’s companion. This study employs a scene-by-scene analysis approach to understand how anthropomorphism theories are exploited and presented in the plot. From this, several important scenes that promote the meaning of life and social relationships have been discovered. In this regard, the study concludes that the Wilson volleyball is not just an advertising gimmick but an anthropomorphic agent that helps provide companionship, care, comfort and motivation which are essential for human survival.

Full text
Abstract:
The perception of reality is experienced through the senses, where each sense contributes to the way we form our picture of the feeling of comfort. When it comes to the perception of space and spatiality, the most dominant are visual and tactile influences, providing the information that outbalance other senses. A widely accepted opinion in science is that there are several main categories of comfort - visual, thermic, auditory, olfactory and hygienic. In contrast to previously mentioned terms, spatial comfort has not been clearly defined, even though it is one of the key terms when discussing human needs and functionality of space in architecture. Along with being widely used in practice and the fact that a clear scientific determination of this term is still lacking, its use is understood as the equivalent of comfort of a certain space. Our paper analyzed and systematized most significant parameters that can be applied to enable achievement of spatial comfort, which does not necessarily mean that such a spatial comfort will in fact be achieved, as this depends largely on individual perception of a space user. Aiming to clarify the term spatial comfort and determine its precise definition, the main contribution of this paper is the analysis of parameters that can contribute to spatial comfort, as well as reexamination of the thesis that spatial comfort includes the feeling of coziness and content resulting from physical, visual and tactile qualities of a certain space.

Abstract:
The fact that people spend a major part of their lifetime indoors, together with the lethal COVID-19 pandemic which caused people to spend even more time inside buildings, has drawn attention to the significance of achieving Agenda 2030 SD goal number three: good health and well-being, in reference to the indoor environment. The research subject is the health and well-being of building users explored through the sustainable (passive) design principles having an impact on the comfort and quality of the indoor environment. It is set within a regenerative sustainability framework encompassing the physiological, biophilic, psychological and social aspects of comfort. The Comfort Assessment Model’s categories, to some extent, rely on the first author’s doctoral thesis, with further modifications regarding the passive design criteria and indicators. A comparative analysis of the model with international sustainability certification (rating) systems has been performed, proving the significance of introducing more passive design comfort (health) related criteria into sustainability assessment models. In addition, a focus group of expert architects contributed to the research conclusions by responding to a questionnaire addressing the issues of sustainability, comfort and passive design, in terms of the health and well-being of building users, which confirmed the relevance of applied passive design measures for providing comfort indoors and fulfilling sustainable development goals.

Abstract:
The verification system of tuition and thesis payment at ISB Atma Luhur which is running is felt to be less effective and efficient because students must come directly to campus with proof of payment during working hours to verify the payment. Also, there is the possibility of negligence by the finance department that only stamped the payment slip without doing a flag, consequently, related students were unable to carry out the selection of lecture groups and thesis supervisors when the schedule began. This caused them to not get the favorite lecture groups and thesis supervisors because the quota had run out. To overcome this problem, an information system for verification of tuition payment and web-based thesis verification will be developed with an adaptive layout design so that it can be accessed by laptop or smartphone users without reducing comfort during operation. The system development model and tool used in this research are the waterfall model and the Unified Modeling Language (UML), respectively. The developed system can be used by students to upload proof of payment and monitor the verification status of proof of payment that was previously uploaded. The system can also be used by the finance department to verify payments, as well as display and print payment verification reports. The developed system can be accessed anywhere and anytime so that the efficiency and effectiveness of the verification process are increased.

Several studies have highlighted the relevance of face-to-face communication, suggesting that computer-mediated communication can lead to decreases in group effectiveness and reduce satisfaction levels in terms of trust and comfort of its users. Supported by an experiment where the emotional or affective aspects of communication were tested, this paper validates the thesis that, from the users' perspective, there is no opposition to the acceptance of virtual environments and interfaces for communication, and that these environments are able to cope with the reconfiguration dynamics requirements of virtual teams or client-server relations in a virtual enterprise operation. For the thesis validation, the authors experimented with two architectures, the Direct Communication Architecture (DCA) and the Virtual Communication Architecture (VCA) and found that the VCA could represent a “natural” environment to cope with the new generation of organizational environments and teams, characterised by intense reconfiguration dynamics.

Abstract:
Purpose of the study. The purpose of the study is to develop a model of the social comfort of living in the regional hierarchical structure, which allows continuous assessment of this category by monitoring individual indicators as well as combining those with an integral statistical indicator.Materials and methods. The study utilizes a systematic method to establish a whole set of indicators that are representative enough to adequately characterize social comfort. The informational base includes monographic and scientific literature on the thesis topic, regulatory documents, publications in periodicals and the Internet, documents and materials of international organizations, official statistics of the ROSSTAT (Federal State Statistics Service), methodological provisions on statistics, information and analytical materials of research institutions, specialized reviews by various professional associations, news agencies and companies in Russia and abroad. These materials are sufficient to form an a priori set of indicators of social comfort of living.Results. The result of applying the proposed hierarchical structure is an effective statistical assessment of the social comfort of living and the empowerment of the population of the regions of Russia to increase their well-being in the long-term perspective in line with rational measures of state regulation. The research materials can be used in the development of target indicators of the strategy of socio-economic development of territories, monitoring the current situation in the field of social comfort of living.Conclusion. This article proposes an approach to the hierarchical structure of social comfort parameters, which are largely close to the index of living standards and quality of life of the population. However, this index should not be narrowed down only to the monitoring of standard socio-economic indicators. That is why we suggest that it is necessary to extend the Federal Statistical Work Plan of ROSSTAT with the list of the following indicators such as civil liberties, the ratio of work and rest time, surveys of people's satisfaction with life and basic public services which are already being developed in most developed countries, in order to address the subjective element of social comfort.

A car will be selected depends upon the majority of occupants. Then on the basis of that factors and levels are decided. Factors are those characteristics which really affects our observation. Levels are the different value for a single characteristic. Main concern of author is to check the pattern of velocity and thermal comfort of the hatchback vehicle in summer condition. Major problem in hatchback cars is less cooling, mainly at the back seat. If the temperature of cabin is higher than a range of comfort, it is not good for occupant‘s health. It also diminishes the interior of car like dashboard material because of high temperature from a certain limit. So in this thesis, work will perform to optimize the different factors of cabin and control temperature in thermal comfort range. A CAD file will be generated and save in STP format. The use of ergonomic principles is imperative for the design of each contemporary product and its success on the market. Despite the common association of ergonomics with comfort, especially with products related to sitting, this master thesis has its focus on products with adjustable sizes, setting a main goal to make this product durable and adaptable to various physical differences between the users (children at different ages).
In this thesis, the use of bionic methods and principles provide innovative insight and solution to the main issue at hand, adapting the seat to different sizes with application of layers of material. In shaping the layers of material, a fractal design is used, an algorithm method that creates a mathematical dependence in solving the specific problem of different sizes. In this case it solves the correlation between the sizes of layers of the material.
The results of these interdisciplinary researches are implemented and evaluated through a design of a child bike seat, by which they are turned into an ecological, recyclable and modern product.

With the development of economy, pollutions of energy and environment have severely threatened the survival of human beings. Besides, the increasing population and disordered urban expansion also have aroused the deterioration of urban hardening and heat island effect. Therefore, effective ecological design strategies of landscape will become the key point to deal with the current situation. While microclimate, as one of the most significant elements to improve small-scale landscape, requires much more attention. Based on such thought, the thesis takes pains to analyze the different impacts on thermal comfort caused by soft landscape and hard landscape in urban architectural environment, and to put forward ecological design strategies of pavements in urban architectural landscape from the aspect of feasibility.

Abstract:
In organizations, psychologists have often tried to promote employees’ well-being and performance, and this can be achieved through different pathways. The happy-productive worker thesis states that ‘happy’ workers perform better than ‘unhappy’ ones. However, most studies have focused on hedonic well-being at the expense of the person’s eudaimonic experience. This study examines whether orientations to happiness (i.e., life of pleasure/meaning) are related to hedonic (i.e., perception of comfort) and eudaimonic (i.e., activity worthwhileness) experiences that, in turn, improve performance. We applied multilevel structural equation modeling to diary data (68 office workers; n = 471 timepoints). We obtained significant effects of: life of pleasure on self-rated performance through activity worthwhileness, life of meaning on performance (self-rated, rated by the supervisor) through activity worthwhileness, and life of meaning on performance rated by the supervisor through perception of comfort. Results show more significant paths from/or through eudaimonia to performance than from/or through hedonia. The results suggest that the pursuit and/or experience of eudaimonic happiness is more beneficial for work performance than the pursuit and/or experience of hedonic happiness. Theoretical and practical implications for organizations are discussed.

Creative activities often act as a tool to overcome trauma for artists. Nan Goldin is an American photographer who was first introduced in New York in the 1970s and 1980s for documenting intimate daily life of herself and friends who were part of bohemian and LGBTQ(Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer) minority cultures. Nan started photography to overcome the trauma caused by her sister’s death. Leaving home, she formed a new concept of family and recorded their daily life in the form of a diary. Through understanding Nan Goldin's childhood and concept of family, the thesis analyzes narrative techniques, subject matters, and colors used in work. Viewers gain sympathy and comfort in an unfamiliar way through Nan Goldin’s daily record.

Rapid urban transformations have primarily exposed the most vulnerable to the adverse effects of urban climate and its changes. Simultaneously, Brazilian Social Housing (SH) offered by the Minha Casa, Minha Vida (PMCMV) program and spontaneously upgraded by its residents have favored situations of thermal stress and unsanitary conditions, demonstrating reduced resilience. In this context, the paper presents partial results of a Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) conducted on horizontal SH units of the PMCMV in use located in the city of Uberlândia (MG), Bioclimatic Zone 4, within the scope of a doctoral thesis titled "Resilience and Thermal Comfort in Horizontal Social Housing in Uberlândia (MG): Evaluation for Renovations Guidance". The evaluation aimed at understanding the existence and magnitude of impacts derived from urban climate and its changes on the case study, especially concerning the attribute of thermal comfort. It was found that thermal discomfort is a perceived issue in the case study, with significant discomfort related to heat and cold in both analyzed areas. Furthermore, the existence of illnesses caused by heat and cold in the case study is notable, corroborating the perception that delivered and expanded dwellings facilitate situations of thermal stress and impose high social costs on beneficiaries. The results contribute to the expansion of knowledge regarding the relationships between expansions in horizontal SH and thermal comfort from the user's perspective. They also support the provision of technical assistance aligned with the actual needs and priorities of residents of SH in use, with a focus on enhancing their resilience.

This paper sets forth the thesis that Christian mysticism may also be understood in its political dimension and not only as a manifestation of the individual’s interiority. As examples of this more general perspective, the cases of Thomas More and Saint John of the Cross are examined. The author proposes a comparative study of these two figures basing his study on these two texts: A Dialogue of Comfort against Tribulation and the Noche Oscura. In the case of Saint-John, his mysticism is analysed in the light of his poetical exposition of the Rule of life from the order of the Carmelites and as far as More is concerned, the stress is laid upon the problem of tribulation in its most extreme form: martyrdom as a response to political persecution.

Paul Copan and Wes Jamison’s recent book, What Would Jesus Really Eat?, attempts to offer moral and theological vindication for the factory farm industry and, more generally, for eating animals. It thereby aims to provide “comfort” for Christians to “overlook animal suffering” and, if they choose, to continue eating factory-farmed meat. In this review, I argue that various key arguments in the book rest on questionable premises and elide relevant distinctions. As a result the key thesis of the book—that Christians are permitted to eat meat, including from factory farms—has not been vindicated over against arguments to the contrary. I finish by offering a few strategies for pursuing a more conscientious diet and suggest that Christian philosophers can do more to serve the aims of conscientious consumption.

Abstract:
The existence of public transport services system such as MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) is one of the most important aspects in an urban environment. Nevertheless, the impact of sound produced by the trains and the crowds are causing disturbance to the urban environment. The importance of this study is to identify the impact of building materials in the acoustic performance of the underground MRT station in improving the level of users’ comfort. There are three methods of data collection in this study. The first method involves data collection from articles, thesis and books related to the acoustic performance and human comfort. The second method is based on the data collection on site which involves the measurement of the acoustic performance inside the existing MRT underground station using decibel meter. The third method involves the study of the acoustic performance inside the underground station by producing 3D models and by running acoustic simulations within the station models through I-Simpa software. MRT Cochrane station in Cheras was selected for the studies based on its characteristic which is located at the underground level and largely enclosed. Based on the collected data from the field measurement and the computer simulation, this study manages to determine the acoustic performance of the MRT underground station and further proposes acoustic improvement through the manipulation of building materials.

One piece of infrastructure that has an important role in a road network is a bridge. Bridges are land transportation infrastructure that is useful for continuing roads through existing obstacles such as rivers, so the collapse of a bridge will reduce or hold up traffic, which means disrupting the smooth transportation of people and goods. A bridge is a structure that crosses a river or other traffic barrier, so the collapse of the bridge will reduce or hold back traffic, which as a result will disrupt the comfort of traffic and disrupt economic relations. The purpose of a bridge inspection is to ensure that the bridge is in a safe condition for road users and also to secure the investment value of the bridge. In this thesis, we will discuss the identification of bridge condition checks which are carried out directly by conducting field surveys.

Abstract:
This paper examines the true nature of religion as it relates to human existentialism. Religion embodies a profound paradox. It is a source of inspiration, comfort, and peace, yet also a catalyst in the negative atavistic cultures, in areas of conflict, violence and division. The findings of this work corroborates the thesis that religion in spite of its positive peace-building process, it's quite essentially also, a negative influence within the same trajectory. In this work, I adopted a qualitative research method analysis to explore the intricate relationship between religion, peace and conflict, by examining the ways in which religious beliefs and practices can both promote and hinder harmony. Thus, this research work enables us to delve into the paradoxical relationship in religion, which helps us in understanding the role religion plays in shaping human experience and informing our pursuit of positive peace-building in the society.

AbstractIn 1947 Harry Austryn Wolfson published his massive and revisionary Philo: Foundations of Religious Philosophy in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. With the book, Wolfson aimed at proving that Philo was an innovative and highly influential philosopher—by no means an isolated Jew of no consequence to the history of philosophy. As becomes clear from numerous letters written to Wolfson on the occasion of the publication of the book and stored at the Harvard University Archives, for Jewish readers Wolfson’s proposed rehabilitation of Philo could provide a point of orientation. It served as a source of comfort and of pride in the post-war years. While the main thesis of Wolfson’s book, Philo as the precursor of medieval philosophy, was rejected by most scholars of Philo and ancient philosophy, the letters and notes discussed in this article show that much more was at stake than a purely academic discussion.

 Abstract

Objective – To evaluate the impact of providing multiple information literacy (IL) sessions, instead of a single “one-shot” session, to students in face-to-face and online English courses.

Design – Non-experimental, using pre-test and post-test surveys for one group, and only a post-test survey for the other group.

Setting – A small community college in North Carolina, United States of America.

Subjects – 352 students enrolled in 2 successive 3-credit English courses, excluding those under the age of 18, for a total of 244 participants.

Methods – The researchers selected two English courses, ENG 111 and ENG 112, of which most students were required to take at least one to earn a degree or certification. After consulting with faculty, the researchers designed two workshops for each course that integrated active and group learning techniques. The ENG 111 workshops covered pre-searching (e.g., mind mapping and selecting search terms) and database searching in the first session, and website analysis and research (e.g., URLs, Google’s advanced search, and the evaluative CRAAP test) in the second session. The ENG 112 workshops covered subject database searching in the first session and evaluative analysis of magazine and scholarly journal articles in the second session. Instructors provided web-based tutorials to online course sections as a substitute for the face-to-face sessions. Course assignments were the same for both online and face-to-face classes.

The researchers used anonymous online surveys. ENG 111 students completed pre-test and post-test surveys for their two workshops during the fall 2014 semester. The surveys consisted of seven fill-in-the-blank and multiple-choice questions measuring pre-searching, research, and website analysis skills, and three Likert-type 1-5 rating scale questions measuring comfort levels. ENGL 112 students completed their post-test survey in the spring 2015 semester, which consisted of the same three 1-5 rating scale questions measuring comfort levels, to further test the effectiveness of multiple sessions.

Main Results – The ENG 111 pre-test survey had 244 (66.67% female and 33.33% male) respondents and the post-test had 150 (72.37% female and 28.69% male) respondents. When comparing results, scores increased for pre-searching, specifically understanding of methods for brainstorming search terms (9%), and for all measures of website analysis and research, namely understanding of library databases (7.63%), choosing correct evaluative criteria (4.49%), recognizing reliable top-level domains (TLDs) .edu (1.15%) and .gov (11.21%), and Google’s advanced search (10.43%). Post-test scores decreased on the measures of understanding of a thesis statement (7%) and narrowing a topic if there’s too much information (6%). For comfort levels, neutral responses did not vary much, but there was a shift in responses from “not comfortable” to “somewhat comfortable” and “very comfortable.” Across three measures, namely getting started with a research paper, library research skills, and writing an academic research paper, participants’ “not comfortable” responses decreased and their “comfortable” responses increased. The ENG 112 post-test survey had 29 (60.71% female and 39.29% male) respondents and measured the same comfort levels. In addition, responses showed further improvement for all three questions. Within-subject analysis of both surveys showed slight gender variations. On several pre-test and post-test measures, females scored lower than males in understanding of databases, Google’s advanced search, and website analysis.

Conclusion – The researchers conclude that expanding IL instruction from a single “one-shot” to four sessions had a positive impact on student learning, particularly the ability to evaluate websites and to use Google’s advanced search. Student participants expressed increased comfort levels and confidence in their research skills. To address decreases on the post-test survey described above, the researchers planned to focus more on research topic narrowing and using thesis statements alongside the research process in future IL sessions. In terms of instructional strategy, the researchers found timing the workshops closely with the course assignments was helpful and concluded that the use of hands-on, interactive elements was successful in engaging and assessing students’ understanding in the workshops.

Abstract:
The problem examined in this thesis is that there are problems that need to be repaired and improved such as the building used does not cover the number of companies in it so that on certain days many consumers still lack seats in the waiting room, as for another thing, the parking spae provided is not very wide so disturbing the public facilities in the parking area of the town square of Sumenep. Therefore, to find out more about the service quality of public service Malls in Sumenep district, the researchers conducted research with the title of service quality (Reliability (X1), Responsiveness (X2), and Emphaty (X3) ) on consumer satisfaction in Public Service Mall in Sumenep Regency. In answering these problems, researches used purposive sampling method, namely the method of determining the sample with certain considerations. The results of the researcher show that the variables of Reliability (X1), Responsiveness (X2), and Emphaty (X3) have a significant effect on customer satisfaction in order to improve the quality of service and the comfort of the community while at the Public service Mall in Sumenep Regency.

Abstract:
Educational facilities are expected not only to provide good thermal performance regarding energy efficiency, but also healthy and comfortable indoor conditions. The latter is specifically relevant to the well-being and learning performance of the children or students in such buildings. While the performance of school buildings in central Europe has been subjected to several scientific investigations, the same does not apply to the same extent to educational facilities from CEE (Central and Eastern European) countries. While general economic circumstances in these countries are arguably improving, the state of the public educational facilities remains less than ideal. In this contribution, which is based on a research effort conducted in the framework of a master thesis [1], we illustrate a related case study from Albania. This study focuses on the thermal performance of three school buildings (in different cities and climate zones in Albania) in view of energy demand and indoor thermal comfort. Thereby, both on-site data monitoring and numeric thermal simulation were deployed to assess the performance of these school buildings.

Abstract:
Abstract The more important research results on the impact of building development and vegetation on the local climate, conducted in Warsaw in the years 1959–2009 by the Department of Climatology, are presented. Majority of the issues associated with determining the deformation of air temperature limits (urban heat islands), humidity and wind vector areas, because of buildings in housing estates, located in various parts of the city, were resolved in master’s thesis. Areas with high building density are characterized by slow cooling and warming pace, especially during the summer months. Spatial changes in the urban heat islands in the east-west direction well describe the latitudinal profiles (W-E) of air temperature differences (∆T ≥ 0) between the city and its urban fringe. The urban heat island ∆T does not appears till 5PM, initially in the Central City District. Spatial diversity of effective temperature and catathermal cooling allowed to mark off in housing estates („Stawki”, „Służew nad Dolinką”, „Sady Żoliborskie”) places with perceptible conditions, e.g. heat, warmth, comfort, cold.
