Ahn, Yonson. "Korean "comfort women" and military sexual slavery in World War II." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1999. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/4001/.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to explore the way in which sexualities and identities are involved in the creation of patriarchal relations, ethnic hierarchies and colonial power in the context of "Comfort Women". The women were considered sexual slaves for Japanese soldiers during World War II. I attempt to show the It) ways in which masculinity, femininity, and national identity were re/constructed through the enforcement of the subject-positionings of gender, colonialism and nationalism. The questions I raise and attempt to answer are: What kinds of masculinity and femininity of the Japanese soldiers and Korean "Comfort Women" respectively, and the national identities of both, were re/constructed through the comfort station system? How were the positionings of the "Comfort Women" enacted through daily practices and ideology, and what were the consequences of the re/construction of their identity? Finally, how did the "Comfort Women" position themselves in the face of the imposition of gender and national identities, by Japanese colonial and Korean nationalist power? I use personal narratives, including testimonies and life histories of the former Korean "Comfort Women" and Japanese veterans obtained from my interviews with them as well as from testimonies already released. I interviewed thirteen former Korean "Comfort Women" and seventeen Japanese veterans. Thirteen out of the veterans were 'rehabilitated' in China after World War El, the remaining four were not. I also occasionally use official documents on the comfort station system, which were issued by the Japanese military and the Western Allies. I argue that the development of gender and national identities contributed to the construction of Japanese colonialism, and that the "Comfort Women" system helped to produce and reproduce Japan as an imperial state with power over the lives and human resources of the colonies. In particular, the maintenance of the military system depended on the circulation of these concepts of masculinity and femininity. The regulation of masculine and feminine sexuality and national identities through the military comfort station system was a crucial means through which Japan expanded its colonies by military means.

Himes, Amanda E. "Looking for comfort: heroines, readers, and Jane Austen's novels." Texas A&M University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/4929.

Full text
Abstract:
Comfort—with its various connotations of physical ease, wealth, independence, and service—is an important concept to Jane Austen, who uses comfort in her novels to both affirm and challenge accepted women’s roles and status in her culture. In the late eighteenth century, new ideas of physical comfort emerged out of luxury along with a growing middle class, to become something both English people and foreigners identified with English culture. The perceived ability of the English to comfort well gave them a reason for national pride during a time of great anxieties about France’s cultural and military might, and Austen participates in her culture’s struggle to define itself against France. Austen’s “comfort” is the term she frequently associates with women, home, and Englishness in her works. Austen’s depiction of female protagonists engaged in the work of comforting solaces modern readers, who often long for the comfort, good manners, and leisure presented in the novels. Surveys of two sample groups, 139 members of the Jane Austen Society of North America and 40 members of the online Republic of Pemberley, elicit data confirming how current readers of Austen turn to her works for comfort during times of stress or depression. Although some readers describe using Austen’s novels as a form of escapism, others view their reading as instructive for dealing with human failings, for gaining perspective on personal difficulties, and for stimulating their intellects. Austen’s fiction grapples with disturbing possibilities, such as the liminal position of powerless single women at the mercy of the marriage market and fickle family wishes, as much as it provides comforting answers. Comforts (decent housing, love in marriage, social interaction) are such a powerful draw in Austen’s works because women’s discomfort is so visible, and for many, so likely. Thus, Austen’s comfort challenges as much as it reassures her audience.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on two particular case studies regarding the practice of mass rape during wartime. The first section centers around the case of the so-called “comfort women”, women of various nationalities abducted by the Japanese military and reduced in sexual slavery in “comfort stations” across Asia during the Second World War. The purpose in this instance was to lower the amount of rapes committed on civilians by Japanese soldiers, contain the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, and avoid spies. On the other hand, the practice of mass rapes during the aggression on Bosnia-Herzegovina (1992-1995) was a part of the policy of genocide that Serbian authorities carried against non-Serbs, in particular Bosnian Muslims. In both cases, this dissertation will focus on the concept on “double violence”, where the second violence is represented by the lack of justice and recognition, often accompanied by historical revisionism.

Mendoza, Katharina Ramo. ""In war, and after it, a prisoner always": reading past the paradigm of redress in the life stories of the Filipino comfort women." Diss., University of Iowa, 2011. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1025.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation problematizes the ways in which the experiences of the survivors of the "comfort system," the Japanese military's Asia Pacific War/World War II system of sexual slavery, have been articulated and narrativized, with particular attention to texts by and about the Filipino comfort system survivors, or "Lolas." The juridical contexts in which the former comfort women have so frequently been asked to speak of their experiences have resulted in a paradigmatic comfort women narrative, one that is inherently problematic, despite having proven expedient and politically useful in the short term for generating public interest and support for the cause. This juridical unconscious, whose influence extends to extrajudicial contexts, has reduced the survivors' stories to spectacles of broken, violated bodies, and the survivors themselves to figures of eternal victimhood--representations that ultimately replicate the sexist, racist, and imperialist attitudes that led to the institutionalization of sexual violence during that war. I argue, however, that the comfort women's stories resist total containment; outside the paradigm of redress these narratives are rich sites of knowledge and remembrance whose meanings extend beyond the pursuit of reparations and the promise of closure. This is evident in the texts I examine here, texts by and about Filipinas, whose specific experiences of military sexual enslavement have often been overlooked in international public discourses on the comfort women issue. In the autobiographies Comfort Woman: Slave of Destiny, by Maria Rosa Henson, and The Hidden Battle of Leyte: The Picture Diary of a Girl Taken by the Japanese Military, by Remedios Felias, the survivors/authors flesh out the familial, cultural, and political contexts that inflected their sexual enslavement during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. Both authors also employ multiple languages, including the visual, as they chip away at the limitations of the paradigmatic narrative, re-membering their traumatic pasts and reconstructing socially legitimate identities. In the aftermath of a different kind of wartime sexual violence, the Lolas of Women of Mapanique: Untold Crimes of War, by Nena Gajudo, Gina Alunan, and Susan Macabuag, adopt and adapt the rhetoric of the comfort women redress movement in order to make their own voices heard. In so doing, they reveal difficult truths about the limits of our ability to comprehend and act upon sexual violence against men during wartime. Finally, I discuss three poems: Ruth Elynia S. Mabanglo's "Balada ni Lola Amonita" ("The Ballad of Lola Amonita"), Joi Barrios' "Inasawa ng Hapon" ("Taken to Wife"), and Bino A. Realuyo's "Pantoum: Comfort Woman." I find that by drawing upon the signs, symbols, and rituals of precolonial indigenous and religious Filipino culture, and by superimposing the metaphorical landscape of memory onto the literal landscape of the archipelago, these poems can offer what the paradigmatic comfort women cannot. The opportunity to break out of our voyeuristic consumption of trauma and share cultural space with the victims and survivors, and the chance to see the Lolas' collective experience as an indelible part the nation's past, present, and future.

Dotson, Emily A. "Strong Angels of Comfort: Middle Class Managing Daughters in Victorian Literature." UKnowledge, 2014. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/english_etds/13.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation joins a vibrant conversation in the social sciences about the challenging nature of care labor as well as feminist discussions about the role of the daughter in Victorian culture. It explores the literary presence of the middle class managing daughter in the Victorian home. Collectively, the novels in this study articulate social anxieties about the unclear and unstable role of daughters in the family, the physically and emotionally challenging work they, and all women, do, and the struggle for daughters to find a place in a family hierarchy, which is often structured not by effort or affection, but by proscribed traditional roles, which do not easily adapt to managing daughters, even if they are the ones holding the family together. The managing daughter is a problem not accounted for in any conventional domestic structure or ideology so there is no role, no clear set of responsibilities and no boundaries that could, and arguably should, define her obligations, offer her opportunities for empowerment, or set necessary limits on the broad cultural mandate she has to comfort and care others. The extremes she is often pushed to reveals the stresses and hidden conflicts for authority and autonomy inherent in domestic labor without the iconic angel in the house rhetoric that so often masks the difficulties of domestic life for women. She gains no authority or stability no matter how loving or even how necessary she is to a family because there simply is no position in the parental family structure for her. The managing daughter thus reveals a deep crack in the structure of the traditional Victorian family by showing that it often cannot accommodate, protect, or validate a loving non-traditional family member because it values traditional hierarchies over emotion or effort. Yet, in doing so, it also suggests that if it is position not passion that matters, then as long as a woman assumes the right position in the family then deep emotional connections to others are not necessary for her to care competently for others.

Barberan, Reinares Maria Laura. "Commodified Anatomies: Disposable Women in Postcolonial Narratives of Sexual Trafficking/Abduction." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2012. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/english_diss/84.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores postcolonial fiction that reflects the structural situation of a genocidal number of third-world women who are being trafficked for sexual purposes from postcolonial countries into the global north—invariably, gender, class and race play a crucial role in their exploitation. Above all, these women share a systemic disposability and invisibility, as the business relies on the victim’s illegality and criminality to generate maximum revenues. My research suggests that the presence of these abject women is not only recognized by ideological and repressive state apparatuses on every side of the trafficking scheme (in the form of governments, military establishments, juridical systems, transnational corporations, etc.) but is also understood as necessary for the current neoliberal model to thrive undisturbed by ethical imperatives. Beginning with the turn of the twentieth century, then, I analyze sexual slavery transnationally by looking at James Joyce’s “Eveline,” Therese Park’s A Gift of the Emperor, Mahasweta Devi’s “Douloti the Bountiful,” Amma Darko’s Beyond the Horizon, Chris Abani’s Becoming Abigail, and Roberto Bolaño’s 2666, concentrating on the political, economic, and social discourses in which the narratives are immersed through the lens of Marxist, feminist, and postcolonial theory. By interrogating these postcolonial narratives, my project reexamines the sex slave-trafficker-consumer triad in order to determine the effect of each party’s presence or absence from the text and the implications in terms of the discourses their representations may tacitly legitimize. At the same time, this work investigates the type of postcolonial stories the West privileges and the reasons, and the subjective role postcolonial theory plays in overcoming subaltern women’s exploitation within the current neocolonial context. Overall, I interrogate the role postcolonial literature plays as a means of achieving (or not) social change, analyze the purpose of artists in representing exploitative situations, identify the type of engagement readers have with these characters, and seek to understand audiences’ response to such literature. I look at authors who have attempted to discover fruitful avenues of expression for third-world women, who, despite increasingly constituting the bulk of the work force worldwide, continue to be exploited and, in the case of sex trafficking, brutally violated.

Abstract:
The issue of the comfort women system represents a deep plague in Chinese history, kept silent for more than twenty years after the end of the Second World War. Determined in raising the voice of the victims and in spreading a profound sensitivity among people all over the world, Chen Qinggang, one of the most outstanding photographers and journalists in today’s China, collects the records of the former sexual slaves and gather them into the photo feature The Blood Pain. This thesis is focused on the translation, from Chinese to Italian, of the records of six former comfort women who, breaking the rules of decorum, share their “disgraceful” youth experiences and suffers. This study consists of three sections. The first section delineates the main features of the Japanese military comfort women system, giving emphasis to daily kidnappings and life in comfort stations during the Japanese invasion. International supports and commemorative celebrations are also outlined in this chapter. The second section, which is the main part of this study, presents the translation of the six short records previously mentioned. The third section provides a commentary of translation techniques and procedures applied in the thesis.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Introduction: Due to the increase of the abdominal volume, the prone position is a difficult and uncomfortable position for pregnant women. Hence, so far, it has not been tested if, in this position, a pregnant woman would have her maternal fetal hemodynamic parameters altered. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to analyze the influence of prone position in maternal-fetal hemodynamic parameters and the comfort of the pregnant woman on a prototype stretcher specially built for pregnant women. Method: A prospective, observational, crossover study with 30 pregnant women in antenatal segment, and 16 non pregnant women as a control group. The two groups were subdivided to take part in two types of randomized sequences of positions, investigating if the change in the order of the sequences would bring a significant alteration in the maternal fetal hemodynamic values. The positions used in this study were: prone, supine position, fowler position and left lateral. The following hemodynamic parameters were assessed: maternal heart rate, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, oxygen saturation and respiratory rate and baseline and fetal variability. To the statistical analysis we used the non-parametric analysis for repeated measures and to verify if the position prior to the prone position would have any influence in it and variables of variation were created and compared to the Wilcoxon test. Results: Comparing the prone positions indexes to the other ones obtained, we observed that all the parameters were within the standards of normality and there was no interference in positions prior to the prone position in these values. The pregnant group showed means significantly higher than the ones of the non-pregnant women regarding the heart rate in sequence 1 (p < 0.004) and in sequence 2 (p < 0.001) and respiratory rate in sequence 1 (p= 0.041) and sequence 2 (p= 0.012). In the analysis of the pregnant group we observed that in prone position the systolic blood pressure and the diastolic blood pressure showed lower values than the other in both sequences. In the systolic blood pressure in the pregnant group sequence 1 the comparison of prone position with the fowler position (p < 0.001), with the supine position (p < 0.001) and with the left lateral (p < 0.001) in the pregnant group sequence 2 the comparison of the prone position with the fowler position (p < 0.001) and with the supine position (p= 0.013) it is observed a significant difference. In the diastolic blood pressure in comparison of the prone position in the pregnant group sequence 1 with the fowler position (p < 0.006), with supine position (p= 0.023) and with the left lateral (p= 0.017) and the pregnant group sequence 2 with the fowler position (p < 0.005) and with the supine position (p= 0.008) it is observed a significant difference. To the oxygen saturation in the pregnant group sequence 2 there was a significant difference when compared to the prone position with the fowler position (p= 0.021) and the prone position with the supine position (p= 0.003). In both sequences there were no significant differences in the fetal baseline between prone position with the left lateral. There were not observed any significant variations in the fetal variability in the sequences assessed. All the patients declared having felt comfortable during their stay in each one of the positions. Conclusion: In the prone positioning the maternal-fetal hemodynamic parameters were within the standards of normality and this position on the stretcher especially designed for pregnant women, considered as a safe and comfortable position

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis examines how Chang-rae Lee's A Gesture Life (1999) represents the issues of war crimes. Writing the comfort women issue, Lee handles the bitter history of the Second World War in a postmodernist way. Against the modernist perspective on war history that draws on a simple and moral conclusion, Lee's writing underscores the function of narrative and the influence of trauma in the representation of the war crime. It offers a literary approach to the issue that complicates the role of the perpetrator and the victim, thus distances itself from the common understanding of war crimes. I argue this literary representation of the history of war crimes could be more powerful than historical writings, because it will ultimately challenge the concept of war itself.

Abstract:
History problems remain the major bone of contention in contemporary Japan-South Korea relations. Paradoxically, while their historical roots in Japan’s colonization of the Korean peninsula have gradually receded, the diplomatic friction surrounding them has grown ever more intense. The post-Cold War era in particular has witnessed a marked surge in bilateral contention over the burden of the past. Challenging conventional state-centric and national conceptions of history problems, this dissertation explains the paradox as a rise in contentious activism in Japan and Korea that began against a backdrop of democratization in the late 1980s. Driving this trend were the Korean victims of Japanese colonial and wartime policies, intent on exacting redress for their historical ordeals, and their support networks in Korea and Japan. Based on extensive fieldwork in both countries, it argues that the essential dynamics of these victim-centric history problems have evolved not along national lines, but between the two governments on the one hand, and transnational advocacy networks anchored in Japan and Korea, on the other. The pressure tactics of these networks have become increasingly effectual over time, manifesting as a new logic for the bilateral relationship: one in which citizens are now agents in shaping state-to-state interaction. Drawing on case studies of Korean A-bomb victims, comfort women and forced laborers, the dissertation aims to explicate the influence of advocacy networks on inter-state behavior. It investigates the question: under what conditions and by what means do transnational advocacy networks affect the way that states interact? Through this inquiry it also establishes why certain networks have greater bearing on state-to-state relations than others. The analysis finds that among the array of tactics employed by transnational advocacy networks, those most likely to affect state-to-state interaction are: disclosure of inculpatory evidence; framing a grievance as a human rights issue; engaging external governments and international bodies; and litigation. In addition to (but not mutually exclusive of) these means, the conditions under which advocacy networks most affect state-to-state interaction are when: the target state is the sole culprit; the target state’s economic interests in the addressee state become threatened; and when a bilateral treaty clause is overturned. By establishing a causal connection between advocacy networks and inter-state behavior, this study offers novel insights into the fraught diplomatic trajectory of post-Cold War Japan-Korea relations, addresses a lacuna in the scholarship on history problems, and builds on the theoretical understanding of the role of transnational advocacy networks in international politics.

Abstract:
The relations between China and Japan are strained and continue to foster negative emotions partly because of China’s grievances about Japan’s actions during World War II and the allegedly false historiographical accounts found in Japanese history textbooks. This study will utilize historical analysis of the events leading up to the Nanjing Massacre in December of 1937, examine the Japanese Ministry of Education’s (MEXT) critical and contentious role in the selection of textbooks, used for primary and secondary schools, and will also juxtapose the controversial 2001 Atarashii rekishi kyōkasho with current Japanese history textbooks. The study will also include a syntactical analysis of key terms through my own original translations of multiple Japanese history textbooks, which are currently used in the Japanese school curriculum, to reveal that the textbook publishers, MEXT, and regulation councils are involved in adjusting the content causing the information to reveal various degrees of whitewashing.

Abstract:
Potential employees use organization career webpages as a first source of information about potential jobs. A content analysis of the career webpages of twenty organizations that recruit from male-dominant occupations and twenty organizations that recruit for female-dominant occupations were examined for gender-specific textual markers and for textual markers for the characteristics of job expectations of comfort, reward and responsibility. Specific focus was made on college recruitment pages for employment into first post-college jobs. This study found that there is an underlying gender issue on organization’s college recruiting online presence. Organizations that have a recruitment strategy to hire women are challenged to appropriately appeal to women in their online recruitment messaging frameworks. Additionally, the rhetoric of job expectations is elusive and so is inadequate to foster the development of accurate expectations for a first post-college job.

Abstract:
The trials of a comfort woman was never revealed after the conclusion of WWII. More than half a century has passed before the name was uttered on the international stage. Why the sudden break of silence? What is the response of the Japanese government. In this paper, we discuss the issue of the comfort women and the the political implications it holds on Japan. Japan's failure to accept wartime reparation, largely due to Allied intervention, has resulted in the widening gap between Japan and Asia. This paper focuses on the combination of increased US influence as a result of the San Francisco Treaty of 1951 and Japan’s fervent nationalistic identity served to widen the gap between Japan and other East and Southeast Asian nations, making reconciliation over the issue of comfort women a problem that remains unresolved to this day.

Abstract:
This report describes the project background, design process plus the final result of my MFA degree thesis in Advanced Product Design at Umeå Institute of Design. A breast pump is generally a mechanical or electrical suction device for withdrawing milk from the breast of a lactating woman. Even though the first pumps were patented in the mid-19th century as medical devices for in-hospital use, breast pumps as widely available consumer products have only been around for a little more than 20 years. Existing breast pumps do not address functional as well as emotional needs of many mothers and there is great potential for improvements and innovative solutions to transform pumping into a more enjoyable and positively associated experience. The main purpose of this project is to rethink the way breast pumps are currently used in order to push the boundaries, and come up with a forward-looking, conceptual design solution as a final result. This human-centered design project was carried out in close collaboration with various experts in the areas of pediatrics, breastfeeding and lactation counselling. Moreover this project was done in cooperation with leading design and innovation consulting firm IDEO. San Francisco basted design director Thomas Overthun provided mentoring throughout the design process. Regular check-in calls and feedback sessions were set up throughout the project to discuss project milestones. Anders Smith, an experienced industrial designer from Denmark, closely followed throughout the project as an external design tutor at Umeå Institute of Design. Several tutoring sessions were held on a regular basis. Continuous involvement of experts and external project advisors helped to make sure that the project remains valid and provided a great source for relevant insights, expert knowledge and professional feedback. "Being able to develop an impactful and forward-looking design solution that can encourage positive change both on an individual and societal level has been my main motivation to tackle this design challenge".

Abstract:
The concept of Human Rights has regained strength at a slow pace, and it was only with the end of the Second World War and especially with the establishment of the United Nations, that these Human Right started becoming known and recognised by the world community. Nevertheless, applying Human Rights in real cases has always faced difficulties, not just because of the the specific time period they were created, but also and mainly, due to their complexity and how blurry the line is, which defines what can or cannot be considered as a Human Right. This ended up creating, at the same time, different voices and opinions in deciding which past violations could be judged nowadays, such as the case of the ‘Comfort Women’. The aim of this thesis work is to comprehend, analyse and present possible solutions for the case of the ‘Comfort Women’, which took place during the period of japanese invasion of the korean peninsula, in order to understand the reason why the negotiations concerning the ‘Comfort Women’ problem were a diplomatic and social failure for the Republic of Korea and Japan, by analysing how this issue affected and may continue to affect the diplomatic and political relationship of each country in the future. In terms of diplomacy, the relations between South Korea and the Japan has been gradually improving, with more and more efforts to recover a spirit of neighbourliness and by cooperating in the idea of a joint development of the Asian Continent. However, due to the frequent change of government and political agenda of each country, there have constantly been oscillations and misunderstandings, as far as historical events are concerned. The current japanese government, lead by Abe Shinzo, has manifested that there will be no more negotiations with South Korea concerning this particular matter, while on the other side, the new president of the Republic of Korea, Jae In Moon, refuses to accept the last agreement signed by the ousted president Guen Hye Park, declaring that the decision did not take into account the opinions of the surviving victims. In such a context, the intention of this thesis is to answer the following questions: In which internationally recognised right can Korea’s claim to these compensations be possibly based? What are the responsibilities that the surviving victims intend for japanese government to assume? Which are the next steps that each government could take in order to reach a final agreement?

Tsai, I.-Chin. "The influence of woven stretch fabric properties on pattern design." Thesis, De Montfort University, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/10746.

Abstract:
Conventional pattern construction and pattern making methods typically require the size measurements of a range of standard mannequins or human bodies in order to construct the varying pattern blocks for garment design. These various methods and skills, in the fashion industry, factory or studio are performed by pattern makers or producers, and are refined through the garment sampling and wearer trial system (an uneconomical trial and error) used on woven garments or on woven stretch garments to produce varying garment designs. This is particularly true when fabric stretch and recovery properties and values are encountered. There is a strong alliance with the heuristic knowledge. The aim of the present work is to investigate the influence of woven stretch fabric properties on pattern construction. The stretch and recovery properties of woven stretch fabrics will be taken account for pattern reduction and alteration for the development of a suitable garment pattern to fit the body shape and to meet the comfort requirement during the body movement. The relationship between the degree of alteration and reduction and the relevant fabric stretch properties is to be established. In this thesis, the stretch and recovery properties of various woven stretch fabrics have been measured. The conventional pattern is reduced and altered based on the comfort requirement for body movement, fit to body shape and the extension and recovery properties of the woven stretch fabric. Wearer trial test of the altered garment pattern of woven stretch fabrics is carried out for subjective and objective evaluation in the reference of the traditional woven garment pattern. Their comfort and garment appearances are evaluated by a panel of judges and the wearer. The size and shape stability of garments after the wearing tests are assessed. The results demonstrated that the new pattern method was significantly better for woven stretch fabric. The garment pattern for fit and comfort can be predicated and produced according to the extension and recovery properties of fabrics.

Abstract:
This study examines whether woven metal mesh is an appropriate option for usage in beds and what material the mesh should consist of to best be suited for the purpose. The woven steel mesh’s construction was based on a reference model that consists of cross-linked rods and wires. Since the aim of the project was to reach a conclusion of the mesh’s usability in beds, different parameters were examined and taken into consideration. These parameters were the durability of the mesh when carrying human weight, acoustic properties to minimize chatter when lying on the mesh and rolling properties. The durability was examined using COMSOL multiphysics. Acoustics were studied through a literature review and rolling properties were calculated using measurements on the reference model. A material investigation was done in the database software CES EduPack. It was found that steel, stainless steel and aluminum fulfilled the requirements set on durability. Stainless steel was considered too expensive and steel too heavy. Using aluminum halves the weight of the mesh in comparison to steel but doubles the price, in this case however the weight was considered to be a parameter of greater importance overriding price.

Abstract:
The breastfeeding period, besides its importance to the child and benefits of all sorts, including maternal, infantile and social ones, can also represent a physical and emotional effort to the woman, being considered a period in which the nursing mother faces stressful situations and discomforts. It is considered that these elements, if not properly solved, can negatively mark the experience of breastfeeding and make the mother stop breastfeeding. Focusing on understanding this experience to the nursing mother, regarding the (dis)comforts experimented by her, this study aimed at: understanding the nursing mother´s perception about the (dis)comforts identified and expressed by her in the breastfeeding practice and verifying the possible relation between the (dis)comforts noticed by the nursing mother and her breastfeeding practice. A qualitative research was developed, having the Comfort Theory by Kolcaba (1991) as its theoretical reference and using the DSC strategy to organize the data. Twenty-four primiparous nursing mothers, who live in Chapecó (SC), above 18 years old, from thirty to ninety days after the delivery, who were breastfeeding or who breastfed their children for at least thirty days took part in this study. Three themes were elaborated from the data, THEME 1- BREASTFEEDING PRACTICE: SEARCHING FOR COMFORT; THEME 2- BREASTFEEDING SUFFERING; THEME 3- BREASFEEDING SATISFACTION, which demonstrate that the woman is exposed to several contexts of (dis)comforts described by the Comfort Theory. Also, aiming at finding the comfort states since the relieve, specially related to physical discomforts, well-being and the transcendence, that are found in constant adaptation of the breastfeeding practice and handling, and in the wider breastfeeding experience, as a gratifying and qualifying experience of the maternal role. The study demonstrated that the dimensions and the comfort states are interrelated and the nursing mother, when experiencing the discomfort, looks for adopting strategies which promote the comfort, yet prioritizing the well-being and providing the child´s necessities. The elements which cause discomfort express themselves and are perceived more easily in the physical context, as well as in the search for environmental comfort. However, the social and emotional discomforts can conflict with the maternal role´s vision, but are yielded, sublimated and overcome as the nursing mother finds the plenitude sense in the breastfeeding process.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to find out: What led Japanese activists who support “comfort women” to hold their opinions, and what do they think contributes to the polarized public opinion about “comfort women” in Japan? What are their activities and strategies to address the issue? How do those activists evaluate their activism and the resolution process? In-depth qualitative interviews were utilized to collect data. The research findings showed that different interpretations of the Second World War and different understandings about male and female rights and roles influenced people’s opinions about “comfort women.” Japanese activists used international pressure to address the issue. Also, it was found that the rightward political trend in Japan fueled by economic recession was impeding the progress of addressing the problem. Based on the findings, suggestions were made to improve the activism, including consideration of reconciliation as a way of dealing with the problem.

Tsukamoto, Sachiyo. "The politics of gendered memory of Japanese “comfort women”." Thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.13/1402932.

Abstract:
Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
This thesis explores the role of gender in the nexus between memory construction and national identity formation in Japan, with a focus on the war memory of so-called “comfort women”, or the sex slaves for the Imperial Japanese Military. Despite the fact that Japanese women became the initial victims of the military system of sexual slavery, the majority of them have been excluded not only from scholarly research, but also from feminist transnational justice activism for victims. This research, therefore, analyses the silenced narratives of ten Japanese “comfort women” survivors who testified mainly in the 1950s and 1960s. This study innovates in political science through incorporating the popular memory approach based on the oral history method, combined with the radical feminist approach, Carole Pateman’s critical analysis of the patriarchal state as proposed by the theory of the sexual contract and the feminist activist approach, premised on the pursuit of social justice. For this purpose, this research focalises trauma and healing at the centre of our struggles for emancipation, as proposed by Sara C. Motta and Aurora Levins Morales. This innovative and interdisciplinary study foregrounds memory, history and trauma in the analysis of contemporary politics. Accordingly, gender and trauma are the two core concepts around which my analysis is woven. Trauma is political because it reveals gendered unequal relations between the perpetrators and the victims as a central axis in the (re)production in the modern state and nation. The Japanese survivors’ voices of trauma challenge the gendered hierarchy in remembering the war, which illustrates the hegemonic masculinity of the Imperial Japanese Military and state. The hegemonic masculinity of Japanese soldiers is integral to understanding what “comfort women” meant to them. The Japanese survivors challenge this patriarchal militarist state by exercising their political agency through the creation of a counter-memory of victims of the military’s sexual slavery system. This thesis concludes that gender plays a pivotal role in the (re)construction of both war memory and national identity, because for a modern patriarchal state, the control of the former is central to the control of the latter. In this aim, the state control and manipulation of female and male sexuality for mobilisation of the nation is the key to state formation. By exploring the memories of the Japanese victims as well as war veterans, this thesis contributes to broader discussion about the complexities of masculinised citizenship, feminised subjectivities and (political) personhood in a modern democratic society. I strongly hope that this thesis will contribute to recognising all “comfort women”, regardless of nationalities, as the victims of sexual slavery, by revealing the fierce battle of the Japanese survivors with their trauma in order to transcend the patriarchal binary of so-called “good” women and “bad” women, and to re-humanise modern Japan.

"Visitor Studies" have been viewed as one of the most important foundations for the development and survival of museums since 2000. Much research has appeared in the academic community concerning the experiences of museum visitors, but the question of how to encourage visitors to have a more in-depth and willing participation is a challenge that still confronts museums to this day. The "Flow Experience" theory explores people's mental states when they are focused. It is especially useful for helping museum visitors enjoy an in-depth experience and self-directed learning . Wars and man-made disasters brought unprecedented shocks and impacts to humanity during the 20th century. The countries of the world established war and human rights memorial museums to preserve, commemorate, and represent painful memories of history in response to these developments. These museums are expected to provide visitors with an opportunity and setting to reflect on history. The wars and human rights museums, due to their emphasis on warning and reflection in contrast with general museums' praise for human and civilization development, need to pay particularly attention to the experiences of their visitors. The "Ama Museum" is the first memorial museum in Taiwan that is dedicated to commemorating "comfort women's" human rights. This research is aimed at conducting initial analysis of the flow experience of 43 "Ama Museum" visitors. The study collected information through observations and interviews to understand the flow experience of visitors and analyze the interactive relationship between that experience and the museum experience. The results show that when visitors with different backgrounds (separated into low, medium, and high flow experience groups) undergo a high degree of flow experience when visiting the museum, the experience will not only have more impact, but also be more meaningful. A positive visiting experience can be rewarding for visitors on a psychological level as well as can increase the visitors' identity of "Ama Museum". This in turn helps further establish the image of the museum, increase its visibility, and enhance its value in a various aspects. This study provides advice for various aspects such as the characteristics of "Ama Museum" visitors, the museum's environment, the display and interpretation methods utilized by memorial museums of similar types, and future research. The author hopes this research will increase the understanding of visitor experience and psychology in museum studies and serve as a reference for improving visitors' experience and learning, as well as in planning for museums.

Abstract:
This thesis presents two parts: a transcription of Nan Chauncy's only unpublished adult novel Comfort me: With Apples and a short introduction to that text. The transcription is presented as a diplomatic edition of the typescript of the novel held in Nan Chauncy's papers in the Tasmanian State Archives. This edition is collated with a second typescript of the novel previously owned by the author's brother and which is now called the Reedwind text. The Reedwind text is now in the possession of the candidate. The transcribing of Comfort Me With Apples has been made in accordance with the principles of textual editing outlined by D.C. Greetham in Textual Scholarship: An Introduction (New York: Garland, 1994). This edition of the text has been produced for research purposes and is the only edition available outside the TSA. The Introduction consists in a description of text and provenance; a summary of the novel's parts; an analysis of genre and literary evaluation; a biography of author and chronology of works. Notes include a family tree and maps of relevant geographical locations.

How could the social injustices created by foreign entities be redressed? This thesis demonstrates the long struggles comfort women (associated with Japanese government) and victims of the Radio Corporation of America (a multinational corporation) pollution incident went through for the goal of justice. Many civil groups have joined to mobilize social movements and collect resources needed to sustain the campaigns and judicial process. While the overall achievements are still subject to debate, it is meaningful to examine how these zealous civil groups successfully assumed their role of subrogation through gaining trust from the victims, cooperating with different groups with diverse interests, and engaging the governmental agencies which were reluctant to be involved in the beginning. A comparison of the strategies adopted, the transformation of their organizational structures, and the conflicts among actors between the two cases would contribute to the shaping of the altruistic principal-agent theory.

As a memory-preserving institution, museum preserves and represents traumatic memories, on the one hand making the victims will not to be forgotten; on the other hand, arousing viewers’ reflections on tragedies, and realizing he/she is also taking parts of moral responsibilities in social solidarities. The thesis is based on a case study of “Reasons to Be Strong: A Photography Exhibition for Taiwanese Comfort Women” at Bopiliao Historic District in Wanhua District, Taipei City, 2013. Several methods such as analysis of the exhibition text and comments written by the visitors, as well as in-depth interviews with the curators and visitors were applied to explore how the exhibit represents traumas of the Taiwanese comfort women, and how the ‘bystanders’ make sense and response to the pain of others. The study found that, the ways to represent traumas of the Taiwanese comfort women in the said exhibition included: (a) using personalization narrative to build connections and arouse emotional responses; (b) representing generalized paradigm for life; and (c) using aesthetics to evoke visitors’ ethical responses. As for the comments written by visitors, the results indicated that most visitors showed the attitudes of supporting and wit(h)nessing toward the victims after their visits; furthermore, the connection between them and the Taiwanese comfort women turned into a relationship of “Grandmas and Us.” Regarding the visitors’ interpretations by in-depth interviews, I would like to point out: (a) exploring visitors’ interpretations is meaningful because the process itself is visitor-empowering; (b) visitors’ interpretations are based on the “I” and their “interpretive communities/ educational background.” When interacting with exhibits, visitors are always active and keeping their own opinions and attitudes; however, only for some people can be so-called “critical participants.” Beyond understanding, the ability to feel empathy or sympathy is also an essential factor for visitors overcoming the alienation of the issue or victims. As for expecting visitors to get involved in supporting them, for example, joining the annual protest movement, depending on the opinions of visitors in my research, it requires their better understanding of the issue and closer connection with the victims. In conclusion, the future exhibitions may not only enrich visitors’ cognitive and affective learning experiences, enable them transform the attitudes and behavior, but also encourage diverse perspectives to communicate and engage people in reflection on values. If exhibitions interact with their visitors in an intersubjective way, museum could be a field where we discuss and construct collective memory and identity of the traumatic history of Taiwanese comfort women.

Regev, Rotem. "Young women’s comfort with closeness after parental divorce: Does a close relationship with dad make a difference? What promotes resiliency?" Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/5596.

Full text
Abstract:
Study 1 examined the role closeness to father plays in the developmental-like process associating family form (divorced/non-divorced) with later young adulthood attachment style in a sample of 525 men and women. Participants reported their closeness to father while growing up and current comfort with closeness. As expected, closeness to father fully mediated the association between family form and comfort with closeness for both men and women, but more strongly for women. The association between family form and comfort with closeness was only evident for women; women who experienced parental divorce reported feeling less comfortable with closeness in relationships. Contrary to expectation, the mediating role of closeness to father in the association between family and form and comfort with closeness was not moderated by gender. The key role fathers may play in fostering their male and female children’s later attachment style in divorced and nondivorced families, as well as the attenuated role of gender in explaining young adults’ attachment style, are discussed. Study 2 examined the role of dyadic and family environment factors which are implicated in young adults’ insecure attachment in predicting relational resilience. Relationally resilient women were defined as women who experienced parental divorce yet experience comfort with closeness. Ninety-three women reported on the level of overt and subtle conflict in their families-of- origin, the effectiveness of their parents’ coparenting, and their closeness to father. Hierarchical logistic regression analyses predicted membership in the relationally resilient group based on these dyadic and family environment predictors. As expected, results demonstrate that lower pre-divorce subtle and overt conflict; higher levels of coparenting before separation, during separation, and after separation; and closeness to father while growing up all predicted membership in the relationally resilient group. However, no one variable uniquely predicted membership in the relationally resilient group. Study 2’s results are translated to preventative implications at the family, parental, dyadic and individual levels. Final remarks integrating the results of both studies follow.

The history of “comfort women”, meaning women who were sexually exploited by the Japanese military in World War II, remained hidden until Hak-Sun Kim, a South Korean survivor came forward in 1991. Since then, survivors around the world have told their stories. However, the Japanese government has constantly denied responsibility and removed the narrative on “comfort women” from history textbooks. In order to pass the history of “comfort women” and the victims'' traumatic memories, countries which suffered from comfort women system established museum or memorial museum one after the other. Even in Japan, the country causing the injury, Japanese civic groups established the “Women’s Active Museum on War and Peace” in 2005. In this study, “Women’s Active Museum on War and Peace” and the eleventh special exhibition ‘Taiwan “Comfort Women” Testimonies: How Ah-ma were Made into Japanese’ as a case study, through interviews to investigate the ideas of the museum, and analyze the exhibition to understand how the museum represent Taiwanese comfort women issues and the survivors. Finally, to explore how visitors interpret the content of exhibition. This study found that in the context of Nationalistic history perspective in contemporary Japan, “Women’s Active Museum on War and Peace” presents a reflective perspective of war which is transcending nationalism, and try to construct the identity to human rights of women. The special exhibition ‘Taiwan “Comfort Women” Testimonies’ tries to rethink Japan’s colonial structure of Taiwan, and represents Taiwanese Comfort Women issue in this context. In order to ensure the subjectivity of the represented, the museum “translates” the traumatic memories of the injured subjects who suffered sex abuse through feminist perspective. The visitors provided positive feedback to the exhibition, and showed the reflections of contemporary Japanese society. However, only presenting the injured subjects who were willing to stand in front of the public may construct a stereotype of those suffered. Therefore, this study suggests the museum should also present the injured subjects who were keeping silence at the same time. Besides, a exhibition uses lots of affirmative narratives will make visitors’ experiences in traditional museum communications model, hence this study recommends the museum should combine multiple presentations, by questioning and interactive way to inspire visitors’ interest to explore relative issues, in this way, visitors will not only absorb passively, but also become the subject of knowledge construction.

I chose these two documentaries: "The Secret of Buried 50 Years" and "The Song of Reed" as research materials, because the two films were paid by the Taipei Women''s Rescue Foundation. I wonder why comfort women did not appear in public places until the 1990s. Therefore, I want to find out why the comfort women have disappeared in the past 50 years and why they appeared in the 1990s.I continue with the above questions, and I would like to know how the society understands the personal and historical issues of comfort women after the 1990s. Chaoter2:I deal with the reasons and process of how the comfort women were created in the Second World War.I will discuss the identity of the comfort women from personal experience and national orders. Chapter3: I want to discuss the reasons why comfort women have disappeared in the past 50 years and they have appeared in society. I use the documentary " A Secret Buried for 50 years " to understand the comfort woman’s image after the 1990s and compare the different definitions of the two periods (World War II/1990s). Chapter4:After seventeen years, the second comfort women documentary ‘’The Song of Reed’’ show the comfort women’s later years, including the process of reconciliation with their live. I compare documentaries and social commentary, thinking that personal reconciliation can promote reconciliation among nations. In short, I find the comfort women’s Identity and Historical Formation have different discussions at different times, which also deeply affects the discussion in our contemporary society. This problem has not been handled well in the society, so comfort women’s history has not been resolved until now. Therefore, I want to use this paper to find out the possibility of comfort women in the future.

Kovácsová, Petra. "Role masmédií při formovaní kolektivní paměti v současném Japonsku." Master's thesis, 2016. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-266328.

Abstract:
The thesis is focused on Japanese media and especially on their role in the Japanese society. Their impact is noticeable in the way of shaping the national collective memory. One of the unsolved issues of Japan's past, which still resonates in the Japanese society, is the issue of the former comfort women. From the beginning of the 1990s the thus far neglected issue has been given more media attention, which makes it an ideal study case for the influence of media on shaping the collective memory of a nation. With the help of one media that has been following the plight of the former comfort women incessantly till now, the Asahi Shinbun, the thesis documents the method, by which the issue has been dealt with, and the response of the public to the articles of this daily newspaper, which it has created. As the topic has been being discussed for over thirty years, the analysis of the articles is concentrated on two key periods: 1991-1997 and 2010-2014. Using Susan Pharr's model of the types of roles of mass media, the thesis seeks to learn what role the Asahi Shinbun plays in this issue and whether anything has changed in the last thirty years. Key words: role of mass media, comfort women, collective memory, public opinion, Asahi Shinbun
