Abstract:
As the guest editors of this special issue of Girlhood Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal we invited comics and media scholars to discuss girlhood from the perspective of transnational and/or transmedia practices. These investigations avoid the trap Anita Harris warned us about in All about the Girl (2004) since they approach girlhood as a “constantly shifting” category, to use the words of Kristine Moruzi (2012: 191) rather than as a natural fixed state of being. Neither do they repeat the earlier tendency to conflate girlhood with womanhood (as can be seen, for instance, in Trina Robbins's From Girls to Grrlz (1999) and in Mike Madrid's The Supergirls (2009)). This special issue aligns with the work of scholars who study comics and girlhood with a focus on different publication formats (Gibson 2023), an international approach (Marshall 2018), and a transmedia interest (Hains 2012). The authors represented here consider girlhood as produced and negotiated; they recognize that girlhood implies a multiplicity of ages, social classes, ethnicities, and religions (as did, for instance, Marla Jaksch, Catherine Cymone Fourshey, and Relebohile Moletsane (2023) who edited Girlhood Studies 16:1: Reframing African Girlhood and Salsabel Almanssori and Muna Saleh whose Hijabi Girlhood in the Intersections: Violence, Resistance, Reclamation appeared later in 2023).

Abstract:
Poetry of the Ugandans are analysed in an article in the context of the use of devices of comic in the East African English-language poetry. The critical-realistic and enlightener tendencies that were eagerly apprehended by most East African authors in the 1960s have not allowed them going beyond the direct criticism of damning poetry to this day as well, although point-by-point attempts to use humour and satire when contemplating socio-political issues, do occur throughout the sixty-year existence of East Africa English-language poetry. The dilogy by Okot p’Bitek, Timothy Wangusa and Taban Lo Liyong are clear examples of such attempts made in Uganda literature. At the same time, the three authors use fundamentally different techniques of comic, when portraying modern reality, both purely African and universal human.

ABSTRACT This article focuses on a pedagogic proposal concerning the applicability of the graphic novel Aya de Yopougon (vols. 1 and 2) (ABOUET; OUBRERIE, 2011, 2012), well-known for its format as a series of comic books, as a didactic resource for teaching History at High School. The graphic novel’s plot follows the life the 19-year-old character Aya, who lives in the district of Yopougon, in Abidjian, in Ivory Coast, in the late 1970’s. The narrative focus moves among the life experiences of the friends Aya, Bintou, and Adjoua, as well as those of their respective nuclear families. We present an analytical proposal based on the core discussions found in those comics which can be discussed in the classroom, such as, for instance: feminine sexual liberty and affective and family relationships in the African culture. Methodologically, this is a bibliographic study in which we go over critical works on the themes found in the article, such as: comic books and education, Africa’s history, and African gender epistemology. Our theoretically framework comprises authors such as Waldomiro Vergueiro (2012), Carlos Serrano and Maurício Waldman (2010), among others. This work will contribute to the academic community as it proposes a reading of the teaching of the History of Africa from a text genre perspective according to which comics may be positively used in education. Keywords: History of Africa; Comics and Education; Aya de Yopougon. Abstract:
The South African literary and arts magazine Staffrider (1978-1993) is known for its Black Consciousness stance and the contribution it made in the struggle against apartheid. From its inception the magazine contained illustrations, photographs, artwork and graphics alongside prose, poetry, plays, essays and reports, and for nearly a decade illustrations signed by 'Mzwakhe' appeared frequently. Mzwakhe, the pen-name of Muziwakhe Nhlabatsi, contributed a sizeable number of illustrations to accompany the writing of several notable South African authors. This article offers a discussion of his illustrative contribution to Staffrider in the period from 1979 to 1987 in the context of Black Consciousness as a counter to hegemonic apartheid discourse. I discuss Black Consciousness and the 'Black Consciousness Aesthetic' (Hill 2018) in relation to his illustrations, point out the reciprocal relationship between his educational work for the South African Committee for Higher Education (SACHED) and his cartoons and comics for Staffrider and describe his portraits and the influence of African masks on his work. Staffrider presented the opportunity for a counter discourse to the official apartheid narratives to be published (Manase 2005:70) and I argue that Nhlabatsi contributed to this counter discourse through his illustrations which visualised Black Consciousness in a variety of styles and techniques and the humanity, beauty and dignity with which he rendered most of his subjects.

The Emergence of Congolese Authors in the French-Belgian Comic Field (2000-2014): The Path of Pat Masioni. — Among the comic book authors who left Africa between the late 1990s and the early 2000s, a group came from Congo-Zaire, inspired by the positive example of Barly Baruti, who entered the European field from 1995. By taking into account the career paths of the authors, we can see that, beyond the technical capacities and the value of the works produced, if some of them have managed to achieve a continuous collaboration with publishers, others have experienced fragmented and discontinuous editorial paths. Likewise, some have become famous, sometimes thanks to the symbolic capital represented by their status as Africans or immigrants, while others have occupied the field without displaying an identity position. This paper looks into the personality of Pat Masioni, who stands out as an author who has obtained recognition both in the European French-speaking field and in that of the United States.

Abstract:
Abstract 44 Purpose Despite overt presentation on the skin, most Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) in Africa is diagnosed too late for treatment to be effective. Training health care workers to recognize KS early can increase knowledge, but is only clinically impactful if providers actually encounter early KS—that is, if patients with early KS present to care. Indeed, recent work from Zimbabwe has shown that facility-based KS training failed to increase early diagnosis, which is unsurprising given the public’s lack of awareness of KS. We hypothesized that educating affected populations about KS is critical to making progress in early detection and that enhanced community awareness about KS can be achieved through exposure to common media. Methods Working in Uganda, we used community-engaged research to learn about health-related behaviors in the context of skin disease, craft a culturally appropriate educational theme regarding the detection of KS, and develop three forms of media. We interacted with survivors of KS, HIV-infected patients, facility-based and community health workers, traditional healers, and media professionals. We tested our media among adults at community-based venues in rural Uganda. Participants were randomly assigned to be exposed to one of the three media and were evaluated for changes in knowledge and attitudes concerning KS before and after exposure to media. Results In comics, 90-second radio plays, and a 10-minute film, we developed a three-part theme that was aimed at the public: “look,” meaning to regularly examine one’s skin and mouth; “show” to bring to the attention of a health care worker any skin changes; and “test” to remind providers about skin biopsy for diagnosis. Among the 240 participants who were exposed to media, median age was 30 years, 50% were women, 6% were HIV infected, and 60% were literate. Exposure to media resulted in increases in the ability to recognize and/or name KS (+47%), awareness that anyone is at risk for KS (+15%), and knowledge of how to prevent KS from becoming a substantial problem (+34%). Conclusion Featuring the theme, “Look, show, and test,” we developed media—comics, radio plays, and film—for the public in Africa about the early detection of KS. Exposure to these media resulted in increases in knowledge and changes in attitudes concerning KS. Although the increases in knowledge were not large, they may be as much as can be expected from a single exposure. Optimal outcomes will likely require multiple exposures and facilitated discussions. Abstract:
Michael Boyce Gillespie leads a roundtable with scholars Jonathan W. Gray, Rebecca A. Wanzo, and Kristen Warner to discuss issues of medium, genre, fandom, and African American history in the highly regarded HBO series Watchmen. Characterizing the HBO series as a disobedient adaptation that modifies, extends, and redirects the world making of its source material—the famed twelve-issue comic-book series of the same name, written by Alan Moore and drawn by Dave Gibbons (1986–87)—Gillespie et al. explore the ways in which Watchmen remediates American history, starting with the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 that serves as the historical and ideological trigger that sets the series in motion. In a wide-ranging conversation that encompasses subjects including fan fiction, adaptation, cultural mythology, and black superheroes, the authors argue for Watchmen's significance as some of the most consequential television of the century so far.

Relationships between religion and comics are generally unexplored in the academic literature. This article provides a brief history of Black religions in comic books, cartoons, animation, and newspaper strips, looking at African American Christianity, Islam, Africana (African diaspora) religions, and folk traditions such as Hoodoo and Conjure in the 20th century. Even though the treatment of Black religions in the comics was informed by stereotypical depictions of race and religion in United States (US) popular culture, African American comics creators contested these by offering alternatives in their treatment of Black religion themes.

Abstract:
Parallel with the invention of new media and devices, the problem of achieving and sustaining attention in the classrooms and during individual work of students, increases. Using comics is one approach to address this problem. In this paper the analysis of comics usage in learning materials for German language classes for fifth – eight grade of elementary school is given. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the usage of comics in presentation and practising. Forty textbooks and workbooks from different authors and publishers have been analysed. The appearance of comics with a single picture and with several pictures has been counted. It was established that the authors recognized the possibility of using comics in German language teaching. Single picture comics have been used more often than comics with multiple pictures. It was also noticed that the authors recognized the usefulness of comics in practice tasks.

Abstract:
This research examines the conditions of possibilities within and the routes of entry of the African authors into the comic field of the French-speaking Europe. The dissertation employs a sociological approach by making, firstly, an institutional analysis of the conditions of production, circulation and reception, as well as the sociability in the local contexts, in particular in the French-speaking countries of sub-Saharan Africa. The examination of the modalities of publication in the edition or in the press, of the associations of authors, festivals and other promotional initiatives, and of the possibilities offered by associations and institutions, shows that local authors have to realize their artistic vocation and their professional projects in poorly organized and unfavourable environments. Of course, this state of things requires agents to exercise their greater or lesser skill in adapting to it and making it play to the advantage of their professional career, but it also prompts a number of authors to consider the publication in the European field as the goal towards which to focus their efforts and strategies. The general problem of entry is the angle of attack of the second part, which draws on Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of fields to analyse the trajectories of the few African comics authors who managed to achieve a certain legitimation in European environments, namely Congolese Barly Baruti and Pat Masioni and the Ivorian Marguerite Abouet, as well as some other significant paths. The notions of habitus, strategy, periphery, autonomy and heteronomy, but also antinomy have helped to illuminate these paths. The theory of fields, which emphasizes the social conditions relating to the creation, circulation and consumption of symbolic goods and the institutions involved in the "mise en act" of the artistic-cultural object, in order to understand the position in the society of reference, was instrumental in understanding the importance of several factors: the impact of associations and of the international institutions; autonomy as a second step or eventually as a decisive phase, determining the entrance from the beginning; the “instances of legitimation”

Breytenbach, Jesse-Ann. "A critical analysis of South African underground comics." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002192.

Full text
Abstract:
In a critical analysis of several independantly produced South African comics of the 1980s and early 1990s, close analysis of the comics leads to an assessment of the artists'intentions and purposes. Discussion of the artists' sources focuses on definitions of different types of comics. What is defined as a comic is usually what has been produced under that definition, and these comics are positioned somewhere between the popular and fine art contexts. As the artists are amateurs, the mechanical structure of comics is exposed through their skill in manipulating, and their initial ignorance of, many comic conventions. By comparison to one another, and to the standard format of commercial comics, some explanation of how a comic works can be reached. The element of closure, bridging the gaps between frames, is unique to comics, and is the most important consideration. Comic artists work with the intangible, creating from static elements an illusion of motion. If the artist deals primarily with what is on the page rather than what is not, the comic remains static. Questions of quality are reliant on the skill with which closure is implemented. The art students who produced these comics are of a generation for whom popular culture is the dominant culture, and they create for an audience of peers. Their cultural milieu is more visual than verbal, and often more media oriented than that of their teachers. They must integrate a fine art training and understanding into the preset rules of a commercial medium. Confronted with the problem of a separation of languages, they evolve a new dialect. Through comparative and critical analyses I will show how this dialect differs from the language of conventional comics, attempting in particular to explain how the mechanics of the cornie medium can limit or expand its communicative potential.

Axiotou, Georgia. "Breaking the silence : West African authors and the Transatlantic slave trade." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/3270.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores how Syl Cheney Coker’s The Last Harmattan of Alusine Dunbar (1990), Ama Ata Aidoo’s The Dilemma of a Ghost (1964), Ayi Kwei Armah’s Fragments (1970), and Buchi Emecheta’s The Slave Girl (1979) respond to the need to revisit and re-think the history of transatlantic slavery. The texts of these four contemporary West African authors provide symptomatic instantiations of the problematic of writing silence, and narrating a history whose archives are impossible to fully retrieve. By attending to the violence and silencing committed on the history of slavery, as well as the difficulty of writing, and narrating, history from the perspective of silence all the texts considered in this study perform acts of resistance against the forgetting enacted in and among their communities, and the silencing of colonial modernity, which has turned the history of transatlantic trade into a footnote. Although, all four authors come from different historical specificities and localities, and, thus, the ways they stage slavery in their narratives are informed by the local/historical urgencies they encounter in each contemporary political context, each, within their respective domain, provides powerful and influential examples of undoing historical silences and absences, not by imposing voices or presences, but by tracing the voids/gaps in the historical representation of slavery. The silent, but not silenced stories of the slave trade that these authors narrate in their attempts to speak to the history of slavery bring dis/order to the national and communal milieu, by unsettling a number of myths such as this of ethnic purity (Coker); of ideal “homes” for the diaspora (Aidoo); of national revolutions that putatively disrupt the colonial past (Armah); and of communal/national discourses that include the gendered racialised subaltern (Emecheta). These authors reveal the exclusionary practices of these myths, bearing witness to the fact that they proliferate at the expense of what they exclude. By bringing forth the excluded, the marginal, the “the othered” in place of the dominant, the central and “the same” they raise the impossible, and yet imperative, question of justice towards the “others”. The study intends to introduce the work of these authors to the current resurgence of interest on the literary trajectories of the Black Atlantic that tend to focus on the narratives of diasporic writers dwarfing the voices that speak form within the African continent. As I argue, close, symptomatic, readings of their texts through the lens of slavery attest to the fact that its spectral presence is intertwined in the cultural and communal fabric, and is used to comment and rethink issues such as questions of belonging and ethnicity, the quandaries associated with the neo-colonial condition, the role of the intellectual, violence and gender issues. Following the complexities raised by each text, my chapters explore a number of concepts such as “diaspora”, “ethnicity”, “trauma”, “memory”, “violence”, “the city”, “subaltern agency” and “the body” that invite cross-disciplinary links between post-colonial studies and a number of fields such as history, geography, feminism, psychoanalysis, philosophy and political theory. One of the ambitions of this study is that these initial forays into a largely unexplored field will lead to further research in African representations of the history of slavery; at the same time, its larger goal is to provide the stepping stone for trans-Atlantic dialogues between African and diasporic writers, who will re-think the history of the Atlantic from the perspective of its spectres, from the perspective of the footnoted.

Koen, Dewald. "'n Ontleding van die reisgedigte van Joan Hambidge in 'Visums by verstek'." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1010652.

Abstract:
Hambidge bespreek sekere deurlopende temas in haar gedigte.

Marais, Marcia Helena. ""Passing women": gender and hybridity in the fiction of three female South African authors." Thesis, University of the Western Cape, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/3696.

Full text
Abstract:
A key aim of this study is to shed light on the representation of coloured women with reference to racial passing, using fictive characters depicted in Sarah Gertrude Millin’s (1924) God’s Stepchildren,Zoë Wicomb’s (2006) Playing in the Light, and Pat Stamatélos’s (2005) Kroes, as presented by these three racially distinct female South African authors.Since I propose that literature provides a link between a subjective history and the under-represented narratives from the margins, I use literature to reimagine these. I analyse the ways in which the authors present ‘hybrid’ identities within their characters in different ways, and provide an explanation and contextual basis for the exploration of the theme of ‘passing for and as white’ within South Africa’s complex history. I provide a sociological explanation of the act of racial passing in South Africa with reference to the United States by incorporating Nella Larsen’s (1929) Passing. Since the analyses will concentrate on coloured females within the texts, gendered identity and female sexuality and stereotypes will be the focus. I look at the act and agent of passing, the role of raced and gendered performance in giving meaning to social identities, and the way in which the female body is constructed in racial terms in order to confer identity. Tracing the historical origins of coloured identity and coloured female identity, I interrogate this colonial, post-colonial, apartheid and post-apartheid history by employing a feminist lens. A combination of postcolonial feminist discourse analysis, sociological inquiry and feminist narrative analysis are therefore the methods I use to achieve my research aims.
Magister Artium - MA

Abstract:
Abstract This article analyzes the ways in which journalism comics and biography comics create indexicality through intermedial relations. These strategies include media representations of different qualified media types (journalistic report, biography, and autobiography) and of specific media products (such as familiar images of people and places). The article starts with a short history of comics. It then offers a theoretical discussion of intermediality, media representation, and transmediation, with specific focus on the tactics that journalism and biography comics use to represent reality indexically through media representation and transmediation. Furthermore, the authors analyze intermedial relations in the comic albums The Photographer: Into War-Torn Afghanistan with Doctors Without Borders by Emmanuel Guibert, Didier Lefèvre, and Frederic Lemercier; Il mondo di Aisha—Storie di donne dello Yemen by Ugo Bertotti; Maus by Art Spiegelman; To the Heart of the Storm by Will Eisner; Dotter of Her Father’s Eyes by Mary M. Abstract This chapter provides the authors’ insights into the ways in which ignorance and knowledge influence the existence and perpetuation of racism in the United States. Shonekan relates her experience participating in a predominantly white book club in Naperville, Illinois, as well as her son’s experience as a Black male college student in Sunderland, Massachusetts. Seagrave relates his experiences teaching about African American history and learning from his African American students at Northern Illinois University, the University of Missouri, and Arizona State University. Each of the authors’ transitions from ignorance to knowledge uncovers important truths of the American experience. They reveal both the ongoing effects of widespread ignorance about race and the possibilities for coming to knowledge and achieving understanding.

Abstract:
Japanese comics creator Ikeda Ryoko and writer Mishima Yukio are far from each other in their views, but some similarities can be found in their works that sometimes exceed the boundary of mere coincidence. These are hardly conscious repetitions, but rather manifestations of deep traditionalism in the works of Japanese culture of the twentieth century. The study of this issue is relevant due to the fact that it allows us to identify the moral bases of the aestheticization of death in the works of Japanese culture. There are quite a lot of similar motifs with Mishima’s aesthetics in the analyzed anime “Dear Brother (Oniisama e…)” (1991–1992), which suggests that it’s not just a coincidence. Some of these motifs include: the attraction to death; the addictive nature of beauty, which in this world is destined only to perish; the demonization and aestheticization of same-sex relationships, as well as the great influence of European decadence aesthetics. There are also motifs of revolution and youth. Among the more specific motifs, there is the theme of mirror reflections. In our article we will try to conduct a comparative analysis of the aesthetic system of the two authors, moving from the analysis of symbolic details and moral value oppositions of this anime to aesthetic generalizations, which will help to understand the continuity and difference between the aesthetics of Ikeda and Mishima. The novelty of the research lies in the comparison and conceptual translation of the aesthetics of one author into the language of another. While Ikeda is a more apolitical author favoring “little man” values, Mishima prefers more heroic attitudes. While Mishima follows aesthetics to their logical conclusion, Ikeda prefers ethical values, as she bases many of her works on Russian classics. Mishima, on the other hand, prefers Oscar Wilde as an author not affected by moralizing. Ikeda and Mishima draw different ethical conclusions from the same aesthetic material.

Abstract Africa is so much endowed with a vast amount of renewable resources that can engender economic prosperity and provide adequate capacity to meet up with current and future energy demands. These vast resources made her to be at a vantage position in Renewable Energy (RE) exploration across the globe. One of such RE with enormous potential is biomass, however, the maximum potential has not been realized. This article provides an overview of the biomass resources in some selected African countries. The state-of-the-art in biomass application, availability, energy production in power plant, especially as related to electricity production were discussed. Overall, the authors identify the barrier to biomass energy exploration in these countries and proffer some solution to deal with these challenges.

Abstract:
The paper deals with the medieval Islamic-Egyptian account of the ancient king Surid, who received a prophecy about the future catastrophe of Egypt and the entire world (the Flood) destroying, in particular, his dynasty and who subsequently built the great pyramids. The authors conclude that it goes back to the ancient Egyptian motifs of the prophecy to King Sneferu (the founder of Dynasty IV) about the coming catastrophe of the First Intermediate Period (“The Prophecy of Neferty”) and of the prophecy to his successor King Khufu about the eventual end of this dynasty (“The Tales of Papyrus Westcar”). Surid is a contamination of Sneferu (Soris is the Hellenized form of the name Sneferu) and Khufu (the motif of pyramid building), and the prophecies he received are the said prophecies received by these kings.

Abstract:
The Eastern Cape Province is a drought-prone area and it had been impacted by water service delivery problems for several decades. At the same time, there have been widespread instances of the need to supply water from alternative potable sources as to meet the drinking water demand of the population. Further to this point, there is an ongoing need to collect and evaluate water quality data from drought-affected areas in the Eastern Cape. In the current study, the authors seek to achieve two aims. Firstly, there is a need to conduct an investigation of the potable water quality from the local municipalities in the Eastern Cape where such investigations have not been common recently. Secondly, the authors seek to conduct an investigation into the carbon footprint of provision of alternative bottled water into a local municipality in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Turbidity, pH and presence/levels of faecal contamination of drinking water were measured. In addition, the carbon footprint of the supply of bottled water was estimated for road transport of 5 litre bottles. Results indicate that microbial water quality is a problem and there is finite, but significant carbon dioxide emissions due to supply of alternative water sources. There is significant carbon footprint of the shipping of bottled water into the Eastern Cape Province, should the municipal water supply break down completely. The study results point to the need to monitor and treat the alternative sources of potable water in the study area. This is necessary protect human health and environment.

Abstract:
Architectural education, in the past had a grounding in a strict apprentice or pupillage method of training architects. The apprentice was someone who worked or trained under a master that transferred skill through a “hands on” approach. Architecture was regarded as one of the arts and there was no formal training to qualify one as an architect. It was through the acclaimed Vitruvius that the architectural profession was born. Vitruvius had published “Ten Books on Architecture” that led to an attempt to summarize professional knowledge of architecture and in doing so became the first recognizable architect. The architectural profession spread throughout Europe in the mid-16th century and the builder and architect became two distinct characters. Although architecture had become a profession, it wasn’t up until the late 17th century that architecture became an academic pursuit through an institutionalized educational system known as École des Beaux Arts, however the pursuit of a strict academic scholar was not the focus. At the beginning of the 1800’s, The University of Berlin in Germany forged the fundamental research and scholarly pursuit. Architecture, like the professions of medicine, law etc. became a system of academic pursuit where professors concentrated deeply on academics first and professional work second. It is through the lens of history we can decipher how architecture became an academic discipline almost de-voiding it of its vocational nature. In its current standing, various universities place a high emphasis on research output from their academic staff. Presently, architecture schools in South Africa recruit lecturers on their academic profiles, rather than their vocational experience. The approach of which has devalued the input of industry into education. It has been noted that there has been an increase in an academic pursuit rather than a professional one for the lecturers that teach architecture. This research explores the views of academics on architectural education, teaching methods and the importance of practice at South African universities. The authors of this research provide an auto-ethnographic insight into their invaluable experience of being academics at two large Universities in South Africa and concurrently run successful practices. The research makes use of a mixed method approach of secondary data from literature and semi-structured interviews posed to academics. Initial findings reveal that academics are pushing the industry to play a part in the education of architects; however, the extent must be determined. If industry plays a role in the education of architects, what factors are considered and how does this inter-twine with the academic nature of training? What strategies are academics employing to make sure students are vocationally well trained and academically capable? Another important question to ask is what qualities make an academic architect in the 21st century?

Full text
Abstract:
Translation is always dialogic as it requires dialogues between two different languages, cultures, texts and authors and literature is usually defined by its content and its attachment with the realities out of which it emerges, not by its language. Modern African litera-ture has reached the international readership mostly in the English language even though French and Portuguese languages have become a very considerable media of it. Africa, with its more than two thousand languages, can be comprehensible to a huge number of monolingual, bi-lingual and multilingual readers of the world through translation in the language of the local readership. In Ban-gladesh the majority of readers are mostly monolingual. So, to be comprehensible to the Bangladeshi readership African literature re-quires to be translated into Bengali. Many prominent translators have translated and are still translating a considerable number of African literary texts. But it is noticed that the speed and impulse which are invested in translating a European or American or even Latin American literary text are not employed in translating an African literary text. It may be because of the lack of communi-cation with African cultures and languages and the linguistic limi-tations to negotiate with the creoles and pidgins used in African literary texts or even colonial legacy. Besides, translation is never apolitical. It re-creates through intertextuality and negotiations bet-ween two diverse cultures and languages. Interaction today is possible to a remarkable extent through the internet and hi-speed communication media. But in a postcolonial situation in the context of neo-colonization and crony capitalism, economic realities and psychic boundaries deeply impact the process of fortification of the dialogues between two diverse cultures, inevitable for creative translatability of these phenomena. How the translators respond to the synchronic and diachronic contexts of the source texts is im-portant for the re-creation and at the same time authentication of the translated texts. This paper seeks to critically explore the factors related to the reading of African literature in translation dialogically in Bangladesh.

Abstract:
The 2020 Russia-Saudi Oil Price War was an economic war triggered in March 2020 by Saudi Arabia in response to Russia’s refusal to reduce oil production to keep oil prices at a moderate level. This economic conflict resulted in a sharp drop in the price of oil in 2020, as well as crashes in international markets. In the light of these events, our aim was to test the efficient market hypothesis, in its weak form, in the stock markets of Botswana (BSE), Egypt (EGX 100), Kenya (NSE 20), Moroccan All Shares (MASI), Tunisia (Tunindex), and the MARKET of the USA (DOWJONES INDUSTRIALS), in the period of Septem¬ber 2, 2019 to January 11, 2021. The results therefore support the evidence that the random walk hypoth¬esis is not supported by the financial markets analyzed in this period of global pandemic. The values of variance ratios are lower than the unit, which implies that the yields are autocorrelated in time and, there is reversal to the mean. In order to validate the results, we estimate the model αDFA that shows that the stock markets NSE 20 (0.75), TUNINDEX (0.69), MASI (0.63), EGX 100 (0.64), BSE (0.61), DOW JONES (0.58) show autocorrelation in their profitability, that is, these markets show signs of (in) efficiency, in its weak form, persistence in profitability, validating the results of the variance test by Rankings and Wright Signs. In conclusion we can show that the U.S. stock market has more market efficiency when compared to the African stock markets analyzed. The authors consider that the results achieved are of interest to investors looking for opportunities for portfolio diversification in these regional stock markets.

Abstract:
The article describes the experience of increasing efficiency of competence formation of students of applied information science. Authors underline the necessity of improving theoretical materials of disciplines and elaborating new methodical approaches to teaching technical disciplines for students in engineering of higher education institutions. One of the primary problems of future software engineers training is the lack of efficient approaches to ICT competence formation and particularly in development of its creative and research components. As a solution to the problem, application of project activities for teaching disciplines which are related to information and communication technologies is proposed as well as the active use of web 2.0 services. The authors point out the following advantages of using web 2.0 in the educational process: services allow increasing students' cognitive interest to the problems of the academic discipline, diversifying the main activities during the project, presenting design solutions in a visual, interactive form, forming their own unique digital content. The article presents a mental map of web 2.0 services with categories and particular resources that will be useful for carrying out applied informatics bachelors' projects. The authors offered examples of project topics in the disciplines of computer science, application programming, information security, design activities, and development of Internet applications. In addition, the pedagogical capabilities of such services as comics creation service (Pixton), development of mental maps (mindmup), creation of infographics (Piktochart), organization of teamwork (Yougile) are described. The research results showed that the use of web 2.0 network services while applying the project approach in the process of developing ICT competence among applied informatics bachelors allows not only increasing interest in technical disciplines study, enhancing information exchange, communication among students, but also developing ability of cooperate, teamwork, as well as creative and research activities. The article reveals methods of applying network services Web 2.0 for organizing educational projects. The review of services according to categories is offered and specific examples of their application for organizing project activities while studying ICT disciplines are described.

The linguistic and cultural origins of Ebonics is traced, along with its legitimacy by professional organizations and the courts. CABE asserts that the role of schools and teachers is therefore to build on students’ knowledge of Ebonics rather than replace or eradicate Ebonics as they teach standard English. This position statement has implications for teacher training.

Abstract:
This study combines survey data with annual state data on pupil-teacher ratios covering broadly the period 1940-90 to investigate the role of race, family background and education (both the quantity and quality) in explaining earnings inequality between whites and the African descendent population (pretos and pardos) in Brazil. The authors estimate quantile Mincer earnings equations to go beyond the usual racial average earnings gaps decompositions. The main findings indicate that differences in human capital, including parental education and education quality, and in its returns, account for most but not all of the earnings gap between the African descendent population and whites. There is evidence of potential greater pay discrimination at the higher salary jobs at any given skill level. The authors also find that returns to education vary significantly across workers. The results suggest that while equalizing access to quality education, including improved early learning environments, is key to reduce inter-racial earnings inequality in Brazil, specific policies are also needed to facilitate non-whites equal access to good quality jobs.

Lucas, Brian. Impact of COVID-19 on Poaching and Illegal Wildlife Trafficking Trends in Southern Africa. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2022.017.

Abstract:
This rapid review focuses on the impact COVID-19 pandemic om poaching and illegal wildlife trafficking. It provides an overview of the recent research and summarises the key themes. This review found that poaching for the purpose of international trafficking of illegal wildlife products, generally decreased. These declines are largely attributed to the disruption of transportation routes used by wildlife traffickers to move illicit goods within Southern Africa and overseas by air, and in some locations to the effects of local lockdown measures. Poaching for subsistence consumption (bushmeat) generally increased across Southern Africa and worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic, incentivised largely by economic hardship and opportunities presented by a reduction in the capacity for anti-poaching enforcement and reduced numbers of tourists, whose presence tends to deter poachers. In the long term, poaching and trafficking are likely to return to pre-pandemic levels. Commercial poachers and traffickers are likely to adjust their transportation routes and adapt their business models to take advantage of opportunities. More positively, some authors have suggested the possibility that the COVID-19 pandemic could influence public attitudes against wildlife trafficking and in support of conservation. Trends in poaching and illegal wildlife trafficking during the COVID-19 pandemic vary significantly across and within countries. The impacts resulting from the measures put in place to reduce the spread of COVID-19 have varied significantly depending on local contexts. Up-to-date data on recent trends during the pandemic are scarce. Good quality data are available on poaching and trafficking of high-value commodities such as elephant ivory and rhino horn, while data on poaching for subsistence are less rigorous and often anecdotal. Much of the evidence available for both types of poaching is not systematic and comes from news media reports, and suffers from inherent difficulties of collecting data on illegal activities. Data collection during the pandemic has also been hampered by the challenges of working safely during the pandemic, funding for monitoring and research has been reduced in most areas, and some reporting processes have not yet analysed data collected during 2021.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: What is the prevalence of drug-resistant pathogens associated with neonatal Early Onset Sepsis (NEOS) in the African continent and their likelihood of resistance to commonly used antibiotics in the NEOS, and what is the trend through time? Condition being studied: There is no consensus on the definition of neonatal sepsis. Two main categories of neonatal sepsis are widely accepted: early-onset sepsis (EOS) defined as occurring in the first 72 hours of life, hence representing perinatal vertical infection; and late-onset sepsis (LOS), which occurs between 72 hours to 28 days and can be hospital or community-acquired. Devereux, Stephen, and Anna Wolkenhauer. Agents, Coercive Learning, and Social Protection Policy Diffusion in Africa. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ids.2021.068.

Abstract:
This paper makes theoretical, empirical, and methodological contributions to the study of social policy diffusion, drawing on the case of social protection in Africa, and Zambia in particular. We examine a range of tactics deployed by transnational agencies (TAs) to encourage the adoption of cash transfers by African governments, at the intersection between learning and coercion, which we term ‘coercive learning’, to draw attention to the important role played by TA-commissioned policy drafting, evidence generation, advocacy, and capacity-building activities. Next, we argue for making individual agents central in the analysis of policy diffusion, because of their ability to reflect, learn, and interpret policy ideas. We substantiate this claim theoretically by drawing on practice theories, and empirically by telling the story of social protection policy diffusion in Zambia through three individual agents. This is complemented by two instances of self-reflexivity in which the authors draw on their personal engagements in the policy process in Zambia, to refine our conclusions about the interplay of structure and agency.
