Full textDC-DC power converters are electronic systems characterized by cyclic switching of circuit topologies. Despite their simple schemes, these converters exhibit a variety of non linear bahaviors. This makes it difficult to analyse the system and predict its behavior. To study these behaviors, discrete modeling techniques use hypothesis and constraints on the system operating or control modes to simplify the modelling task. In this thesis, some enhancements of the discrete modelling approach are proposed to alleviate these constraints and to better describe these behaviors without any simplifying assumption. Controllers developed for a converter are generally based on its mathematical model. Therefore, the large variation of the converter parameters can affect the control performances. In the case of fuzzy logic controllers, control parameters can vary according to the system parameters variation. Therefore, we proposed a systematic approach for synthesizing a fuzzy logic controller, in order to suppress the abnormal phenomena exhibited by the converter and to uphold the regulation performances in a wide range of the system parameters variation

Full textIn a wide variety of industrial applications, an increasing demand exists to improve the quality of the energy provided by electrical systems. Besides the reliability and availability of electric power, the power quality is now becoming an important issue. Among the causes of the poor power quality, the harmonics are included as the reason which contributes the majority of power failures. Many efforts have been developed to solve the harmonics problem as, for instance, to install special devices such as active filters. This research work deals with the development of direct power control using the hybrid predictive control approach. The hybrid control considers each voltage vector of the converter as a discrete entity which will be applied to control a continuous linear system. One criterion to calculate the optimal voltage vector to apply will be established for the predictive control model. The optimal voltage vector to apply for each switching period, and the corresponding application time will be used to approach the actual value of the state variables of the system to the desired reference point. Two instantaneous power theories will be used, i.e. pq0 and pqr instantaneous power theory for a shunt active power filter application implemented in 3-phase 4-wire system. These instantaneous power theories have been developed to be applied to unbalanced systems using the power variables to obtain the currents that should be injected from active filters. The active filter will produce the required reactive power for the load and compensate the ripple component of active power so that the source only delivers constant active power

Full textThe present study deals with the control - command for floating voltage series multicell converters. This thesis aims to suggest new control strategies allowing a safe and continuous energy conversion between source and load and with minimum number of sensors. The author shows how to find a control allowing, in one hand the fastest transients and in the other hand optimal steady states. As a matter of fact, prime number cells converters are monitored with full success. This first level loop is thereafter directly driven by sliding mode control algorithms : that way, we show that multicell converter is the ideal power interface to implement sliding modes (first or higher order) without any modulation. After this study, the author intends to remove inner voltage sensors. Therefore, he develops a sliding mode observer which garantees converter safe working whatever the load is. A one cell failure is thereafter taken into account. The previous observer is then modified to detect the failure in real time in order to reconfigure the converter properly

Full textThe author proposes a contribution to the control of a naturally commutated matrix converter used in a variable speed constant frequency generating system. The association of the matrix converter and the synchronous generator is called active generator. This work describes a low cost and robust solution for the frequency conversion by using natural commutations. In the first chapter, the author presents several examples of variable speed constant frequency generating systems which transform the variable speed mechanical energy to a constant frequency electrical power. The matrix converter topology and its operation principle are also described. In order to present the active generator, a detailed study of the association “matrix converter - six-phase synchronous generator” is detailed in the second chapter; the system operation under several constraints is given too. In the third chapter, the author presents an innovative control strategy which permits the simultaneous control of the frequency, the phase and the amplitude of the output wave; this strategy is based on cosine modulation waves. Contrary to the control strategy presented in the first chapter, this control philosophy permits to obtain a regulated output wave. The output voltage waveform is done in such a way that the actual output waveform always has the nearest possible instantaneous value to a sinusoidal reference waveform of desired output frequency, desired phase and amplitude. Commutation instants are determined by the intersection of the reference voltage and the cosine modulation waves. The last chapter deals with the implementation of the control strategies on a digital signal processor DSP. Experimental results are presented and compared to those obtained by simulation

Full textWide band gap devices already demonstrate static and dynamic performances better than silicon transistors. Compared to conventional silicon devices these new wide band gap transistors have some different characteristics that may affect power converter operations. The work presented in this PhD manuscript deals with a specific gate drive circuit for a robust, high power density and high efficiency wide band gap devices-based power converter. Two critical points have been especially studied. The first point is the higher sensitivity of wide band gap transistors to parasitic components. The second point is the lack of parasitic body diode between drain and source of HEMT GaN and JFET SiC. In order to drive these new power devices in the best way we propose innovative, robust and efficient solutions. Fully integrated gate drive circuits have been specifically developed for wide band gap devices. An adaptive output impedance gate driver provides an accurate control of wide band gap device switching waveforms directly on its gate side. Another gate drive circuit improves efficiency and reliability of diode-less wide band gap devices-based power converters thanks to an auto-adaptive and local dead-time management

Full textThe goal of this work is to build a benchmark for control and observation of multicellular converters series using the tools and theories of hybrid systems. The most important contributions of this work are: implementation of an experimental benchmark, using the hybrid approach to model the converter for the purpose of demonstrating the feasibility of this approach by establishing a hybrid automaton with different modes in order to represent the converter, apply high order sliding mode control theory to control a chopper multicellular combined with a RL load and then with a brushed DC motor, study the observability and synthesize observers for intermediate voltages by using the recent proposed theory of 'Z (TN) observability' for the converter from hybrid point of view. Observation strategies for intermediate voltages of the converter are studied: adaptive observer, step by step sliding mode observer and high order sliding mode observer (super twisting algorithm). All methods of control and observation presented in this dissertation have been experimentally validated through the benchmark which we have built

Full textAutomatic control deals with modelling and control of dynamic systems. The Hybrid Dynamic System (HDS) community has increased over last years. A static converter (having a finite number of configurations) associated to a load (continuous process) is an example of HDS. To analyse the dynamic behaviour of such system, it is necessary to emphasize and take into account the hybrid aspect. In this document, we propose two systematic modelling approaches which are applied on a multicellular converter associated to a load. The aim of these modelling approaches is to determine a model by taking into account both the discrete and the continuous variables. The first approach is based on a mathematical representation of the dynamic network graph. With this method, we synthesize a port-Hamiltonian representation parameterized by the discrete state of the switches. The second approach is the switching Bond Graph with variable topology. This method allows modelling the switching elements with null sources. Then we propose two predictive control laws which directly determine the configurations of the converter to use in order to track as soon as possible the references of the continuous state variables of the system. In this case, the real-time constraint is important (a few tens microseconds). This constraint leads us to propose a simplified model which is validated in simulation over a sampling period. Having predicted the behaviour of the system for each converter configuration, the first control method selects the converter switching state which minimizes the Euclidian distance between the predicted state and the reference state. This method is compared to a classic control approach by simulation. Then an interconnected adaptive observer based on this control method is designed in order to estimate the capacitor voltages. The second control approach calculates directly the duty cycles of the discrete elements of the converter allowing to reach the reference state by inversing the control matrix in the model. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approaches

Full textGiven the importance of power converter safety operation in several fields (electric traction, renewable energy, etc ..), it is necessary to examine availability of these systems in the case of malfunction of an IGBT module, a converter leg or a phase machine. Thus, it is essential to develop new hardware architectures and software controls capable of operating at significant power after fault occurence. This thesis deals with a new multilevel fault tolerant hybrid topology. It consists on adding to a 3-phase 3-level NPC (Neutral Point Clamped) inverter, a fourth 3-level FC (Flying Cap) leg. New techniques of fault tolerance parts, namely detection, isolation, reconfiguration and system control during post fault mode, are proposed, analyzed and validated with a 15kW experimental converter prototype

Full textImproving the efficiency of the converter-alternating current motor system is a major task in electric traction. Global energy optimisation implies a specific approach at system scale. To reach this goal, we have chosen an algebraic method using sub-system models. To start with, a synchronous machine Park model is developed to take into account magnetic saturation and iron lasses. Then, an averaged model of the voltage inverter is used in order to obtain a simplified model of the lasses to be implemented in our optimisation method. This is how the global model is built including lasses in the synchronous machine along with the lasses of the power converter. Experimental results are there to validate our approach. This study proposes a method based on algebraic formulation of the general laws to control torque. Algorithms take into account the magnetic circuit saturation and power lasses in both the machine and its converter. Here again, experimental results validate the algorithm on several test benches. Achieved efficiency improvement is important compared to existing usual control strategies. The proposed method can be generalised to other machine-converter systems. As a matter of fact we have extended our "study to the induction machine. As a complement to this study we have looked at the effects of natural limitations of voltages and currents in the torque-speed plane. Therefore algebraic formulation of the torque-speed plane and optimisation strategies are proposed including those constraints

Full textThis PhD thesis aims to the observation and control of multilevel converters and the synchronous machines control. To satisfy the needs of GS Maintenance's customers and for maintenance reasons, a control strategy for a current fed self controlled synchronous machine is validated by experiments tests. The proposed strategy focus on a very low speed because the machine counter electromotive force is insufficient for inverter thyristors switching. Recently, the company proposed for its customers a power converter with medium voltage to keep its place in the speed variation. So, a modern voltage control of the synchronous machine fed by a voltage inverter is proposed and validated by simulation results. Medium voltage operation encouraged the company to choose the multi-level converter. Then, the flying capacitor converter is proposed in this work and a direct control based on the sliding mode theory and the priority principle is designed to guarantee the voltage balance. This control strategy has been generalized for any number of cells of the converter and validated by simulation results for a 7 cells converter. To reduce the cost and complexity of the converter, an adaptive observer floating voltages is proposed by taking into account the switching states of the converter. This observer is then associated with the direct control in closed loop. A test bench of a 3 cells converter is set up in the company. Experimental tests of « observer based direct control » are then conducted on this test bench

Full textOne of the important points of this study, which has been carried out in cooperation with EDF-CEGELEC-CRAN, is the complete realization of an industrial digital control of a self-controlled synchronous machine. This realization is based 0!l a given operation requirements specification especially for firing angle accuracy and variable-frequency following. In the first part of the thesis, phenomena related to the imperfections of power supply network are studied in a certain depth, especially the extraction of the fundamental of a noisy variable-frequency network. This is a specific research on the synchronizing problem. In the second part, we discuss digital firing circuits for thyristors and gate pulse production algorithms. We will give a description and a comparaison of several existing firing algorithms (reference crossing, time delayed, incremental) and then, propose a firing algorithm said hybrid algorithm. Finally, a complete study is made on firing control (from operation requirements specification to its hardware and software realization) of thyristor bridges for a self-controlled synchronous machine. Note that the rapidity of process, the complexity of the interaction between different functions make us, during the realizing procedure, to' follow the design method MAREL (Méthode de conception d'Applications temps Réel pour la commande de processus ELectromécaniques : design method for real time applications in electromechanical process control) developed in CRAN

Full textThe increasing rise of distributed generation integration in the energy mix is a challenging issue. Indeed distributed generation based on renewable energy sources like solar and wind creates fluctuation of the grid’s parameter and can lead to minor issues like harmonics, over or under voltages, flicker and so on, or to major failure like blackouts. The concept of microgrid associated with energy storage systems is seen as a potential solution to increase renewable energy integration to the grid, while increasing efficiency and reliability at the same time.A review of energy Storage technologies is carried out and it results that currently none of these technologies can offer energy and power capabilities while fast response and efficiency at the same time. The use of Hybrid Energy Storage System allows to reach such performance. For this thesis, a Li-Ion and a Vanadium Redox Flow Battery have been selected for their good power and energy abilities respectively, and their high round trip efficiency. The main contribution of this work lies in the structural limits analysis of the topology and the control algorithm for the four leg three level NPC used as a multipurpose interface between a Renewable Energy Source, a Hybrid Energy Storage System and a Microgrid. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithms and limits model are tested both in simulation and experiments. Ancillary services like frequency and voltage support are then developed and tested in simulation under various conditions

Full textIn the context of exploitation of marine renewable energy sources, the access difficulties to the installations requires to explore fault-tolerant energy conversion systems. This Doctorate thesis deals with the dynamical modeling and control of an innovative energy conversion chain. The studied conversion chain consists of a non-sinusoidal EMF 5-phase permanent magnet synchronous generator which delivers the energy to the DC bus via an AC/DC converter. Two AC/DC topologies are investigated: a 5-phase PWM rectifier and a 5-phase VIENNA rectifier. The energy transfer optimization needs optimal control strategies using all the EMF harmonics in normal mode and in specific fault mode due to the opening of one phase of the generator. Specific control algorithms are developed based on the possible connection between the neutral of the machine and the midpoint of the DC bus. Particular profiles of the current references imposed by the control strategies require robust and high dynamic performance controllers. For the inner current loops, the linear PIα fractional controller and a specific non-linear phase-shift self-oscillating controller are synthesized. For the outer voltage loop, control strategies are developed and regulators are synthetized. Software and experiment test benches are built. Results illustrate the working and performances of the control strategies developed for different scenarii with both converters

Full textThis thesis report deals with the issue of integration of isolated DC-DC converters operating at low power high frequency and high efficiency. To begin with, the particular environment of this converter is presented. This is the field radar avionics power supply, for which electrical, mechanical, EMC specifications are hard. Therefore, this part is a starting point for the converter specifications. The bellowing study details the choice of conversion structure that seems best for both, the environment but also specifications. On the other hand, this paper discusses the feasibility of co-sintering process for the realization of magnetic components. This components. Which are essential to realized such of converter. It follows the selection and implementation of a ferromagnetic ceramic material specific to our application. This step led to the characterization of a model of evolution for magnetic losses tacking into account the magnetic induction amplitude and the operating frequency. The next step is the implementation of a tools of constrained optimization sizing for magnetic components such as transformers and resonance inductors. These elements are composed of our ferromagnetic ceramic suitable for 3MHz as witching frequency. However, one of the most critical points of this study proves to driver of the power switches. The driver requires a development of an original structure without which efficiency for 3MHz converter couldn't exceed 40% to 50%. Several patents results of this structure, as the particular converter regulation mode. In conclusion, this report presents the realized prototype and the very encouraging results that we have been obtained. A critical eye is focused on this functional achieving to open on the prospects for highly integrated co-sintered converter based on this thesis
