Abstract:
AbstractThere are traces of attempts at a methodical explanation of biblical texts before the appearance of full-scale commentaries on Holy Scripture. The use of exegetical technical forms arose in Christian schools from the necessity to understand the contents of the Bible as coherent. In Clement of Alexandria, exc. Theod. 4f, a hitherto overlooked fragment of an early Christian Quaestiones-commentary has been preserved. The specific interest in Christ's transfiguration concerns his identity with God and the comprehension of his disciples. The differences between heretical and orthodox exegesis do not depend on the choice of methods, as Marc the Magician and Clement demonstrate. The narrative of the transfiguration in the apocryphal Acts of the Apostles testifies to exegetical expertise. Origen considers his own scholarly exegesis as basically debatable.

Abstract:
The article analyses the organisation of higher education by the Calvinist Church of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (Unitas Lituaniae) in the 17th century, in the period of the weakening of the Reformation, covering the first half of the 17th century, and the second half of the century, when Evangelicals became a religious minority. Research reveals that the education of young people at foreign universities was funded by private means, collected in the districts and accumulated by the Synod. This article also investigates the formation of the institution of international alumni at the Synod of the Calvinist Church, which became part of the system of education of that Church. The stipendiaries had to make up for the financial aid by working at locations assigned by the Synod. The continuous operation of the institute of international alumni at the Synod for more than a century permitted cultural contacts and simultaneously promoted the infusion of new ideas into the evolution of Lithuanian culture. The most important of the latter included the formation of groups of clergymen and school teachers with a university education; the nurturing of Adomas Rasijus’ (ca 1575–1627/8) projects for the adjustment of the social structure and the refinement of the education system in Lithuania by the establishment of academic grammar schools for the nobility and merchants from Lithuania with special syllabi; the encouragement of S.B. Chylinski to translate the Bible into Lithuanian in the middle of the 17th century in Franeker and London; understanding the importance of the Lithuanian language as a written language and the language of the Holy Scripture; the possibility to get acquainted with the translation, text and commentaries of the Dutch Statenbijbel; the encouragement to complete the translation of the New Testament into the Lithuanian language and publish it in 1701; planning the translation of a commentary to the Dutch Statenbijbel into Polish.

Abstract:
The originality of the lullian system of not arguing with authorities includes also the Holy Bible, because in the Christian Middle Ages the most important authority is the holy word. In this context, Ramon Llull adopts a especial vision with reference to the Holy Bible: if the lullian Ars is a system which goes further than the Bible, then the Holy Bible itself is one of the arguments for going much further than the Bible. In this case, the Holy Bible and, especially, some of the biblical quotations are the basic structure of the apostolical conception of the lullian system.

Mounier, Benoît. "« In manu prophetarum assimilatus sum » (Osée 12, 10) : recherches sur le commentaire sur Osée de Jérôme : philologie et herméneutique, avec les prolégomènes d'une édition critique." Thesis, Strasbourg, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015STRAC031/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Written in the end of 406, the Comment on Hosea by Jerome of Stridon (c. 347-419/420) is the transition between its biblical comments on Minor and Major Prophets. Within this vast exegetical project, the work constitutes a good example of an hermeneutics well mastered. With a strong concern of coherence, the exegete displays the essentially historic literal interpretation to introduce the spiritual interpretation declined in two senses, the one anti-heretic, the other one mystic, both presented as fundamental to understand the book of Hosea. The work also constitutes a key witness to seize the importance of the typology, both centered on Jesus Christ and his Church, to explain the Prophets according to Jerome.Besides, the work was the object of no in-depth research both on its contents and on its text. So, new philological researches allowed to establish the handwritten transmission and to propose the first elements of a scientific edition of the text

Abstract:
In the Hebrew Bible, literary patterns of revelation and concealment are based on humanity's initial encounter with God in the Garden of Eden. God asks the question "Where are you?" Adam and Eve reveal themselves by articulating their concealment behind the fig leaf. This paradox effects their exile from Eden, and their progeny must henceforth mediate this paradox in their future verbal intercourse with God.
It is the intention of this work to suggest how in certain textual passages, this paradox is defined and structured according to a literary dichotomy of language and silence. After the exile, biblical characters proclaim their presence before God by uttering a password ("Here I am") which is, in effect, an existential utterance of dialogic reconstruction. Through various literary devices, I hope to show how this "vertical" dialogue is re-established by Adam and Eve's progeny, and how the biblical narrator(s) uses language to show silence as a "phenomenon" of the word.

Abstract:
This chapter evaluates Rashi's commentary on the Torah. Rashi saw significance and purpose in every name, time, place, and event—indeed, in every detail—mentioned in the Torah. The essence of Rashi's commentary on the Bible—especially on the Torah—and his extensive use of rabbinic Midrash cannot be understood without appreciating the full significance of this idea, which effectively serves as the basis for the entire commentary. As he sees it, the Torah is not merely a historical or literary work. It is, rather, a holy text conferred on human beings by God to guide them in the way of truth, and it must be read and interpreted in that light. Every detail, large or small, has its own unique value. It is therefore hardly surprising that in seeking out its meaning, Rashi would have frequent recourse to rabbinic Midrash or that he would often suggest more than one meaning.

Abstract:
This chapter examines how holiness relates to violence, with particular emphasis on biblical, medieval, and contemporary Jewish attempts to justify violence, both in wartime and in peacetime. It defends the holy and its connection to ethics, while also purging holiness of violence. The chapter first considers the extreme violence commanded or depicted in the Bible, citing as an example the genocide of the Canaanites, before discussing holiness and violence in contemporary Judaism. More specifically, it describes how the legacy of biblical violence was moralized and diminished by rabbinic Judaism. It then analyzes God's violence by applying the so-called Maimonides's razor and suggests that the harshness of God, as depicted in the Bible, is a poetic way of capturing the imperative of justice. The chapter concludes with a commentary on the association of justice with the God of monotheism.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a broad, systematic account of Nahmanides's thought. It analyzes Nahmanides's conception of halakhah and his approach to the central concerns of medieval Jewish thought, including his conception of God, history, revelation, and the reasons for the commandments. It discusses Nahmanides's ideas and positions on a range of matters that emerges out of conversation with the work of other scholars on particular aspects of his thought, such as Chayim Henoch's book Nachmanides: Philosopher and Mystic. The chapter looks into Haviva Pedaya's book Nahmanides: Cyclical Time and Holy Text, which explores Nahmanides's conception of time and the Torah. It also explores Nahmanides's Talmudic novellae and Bible commentary, which is a direct result of his extraordinary cultural positioning.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the vehicle of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s social gospel: the mass meeting. The mass meeting was born in Montgomery, Alabama, with the December 5, 1955 rally at the Holt Street Baptist Church. From the beginning, the meetings served an indivisibly sacred and civic agenda. At Holt, the throng listened to Bible readings, sang “Onward Christian Soldiers” and “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms,” and took courage from a sermonic speech by the young Dr. King. The mass meetings held throughout the South also served to solidify a sense of community among participants. The meetings provided a continuous social commentary on fast-breaking events, a forum for information and tactical planning, a school for correction and instruction in nonviolence, a place of praise and encouragement, but, most of all, a way of keeping together.

Aim/Purpose: To engage the reader to think more deeply about lying in the context to a discussion of fake news. Background: Many have read the scriptures holy to Christians; this discussion leads to questions about why even characters within tell things that are not true. Findings: The Hebrew and Greek Bibles are filled with instances where the characters, even G-d, appears to have lied, and commentators have drawn wisdom from these. Recommendations for Researchers: When noting fake news, ask why the news with its falsehoods are present-ed. That is, determine if the news is an eisegesis or an exegeses.
