Abstract:
Translation of philosophical texts is a special challenge because of specific philosophical idiom and conceptual complexity of the narrative. It is not surprising that such translations are often accompanied by commentaries where the translator steps out of the shadows to justi­fy the translational decisions. This kind of supplementary text called the “translational peritext” is under study in this paper aiming to reveal the cognitive effort the translation process involves, and to explore the author-translator-reader relationship. The purpose of the article is to analyze paratextual elements in the translation of an essay on philosophical aes­thetics in search of answers to three main questions: What does the translator choose to com­ment on, and why? What is specific about the role and function of translational peritext in philosophical artistic discourse? How do the commented translational decisions affect, if at all, the reader’s understanding of the author’s stance? The problem of revealing the translator’s agency, his/her motivations and decision-making is investigated on the basis of the essay Analysis of Beauty by the celebrated 18th century English artist William Hogarth — an in­fluential philosophical treatise whose ideas have never lost their relevance. The paper starts with the brief account of the concept of paratext, its types and functions; it will then proceed to specificities of philosophical translation. In the main part of the article, the background information on the material under study precedes the analysis of the identified commented translational issues.

The book also contains the description of Nobunaga military campaign against Nagashima Ikko-ikki. The article continues the series of translations of books of Shinchō-kō ki, previously published by the author.

Abstract:
Most of the groundbreaking works of Gustav Theodor Fechner (1801–1887), who paved the way for modern experimental psychology, psychophysics, and empirical aesthetics, are so far only available in German. With the first full text translation of Fechner’s article on The Aesthetic Association Principle ( Das Associationsprincip in der Aesthetik), we want to fill in one of the blank spots in the reception of his Aesthetics from Below (Aesthetik von Unten). In his 1866 article, Fechner devises a fundamental principle that accounts for the role of associations in the formation of aesthetic preferences. Based on concrete everyday examples and thought experiments, he demonstrates how aesthetic choices are largely shaped by the observer’s learning history (associative factors) rather than by an object’s formal properties (direct factors). Fechner’s Aesthetic Association Principle has lost nothing of its initial relevance as the role of content and personal meaning is still grossly underrated in theory and practice of empirical aesthetics today.

Abstract:
The publication provides a continuation of the translations of books of Shinchō-kō ki, previously published by the author. This is a commented translation into Russian of the book 7 of Shinchō-kō ki chronicle. The text comprises a description of one of the largest military clashes in the Sengoku period - the battle of Nagashino. The army of Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu fought the army of Takeda Katsuyori. The victory of Nobunaga redressed the balance of power, which previously existed. The comments to the translation allow to compare the information from the Shinchō-kō ki chronicle to that preserved in other contemporary sources. They are also aimed to display the existing interpretations of the key passages.

This article discusses the English translations of twelve of Grimms’ fairy tales included in the hitherto forgotten edition published by Darton and Co. in 1851. The titles and tales are identified with their German originals, and the defects of the translation are examined. The German base text was one of the Grimm editions published between 1837 and 1850. Other items not by the Grimms in the edition are commented on. Identification of the tale entitled ‘Sycorine and Argilas’ is unknown. The anonymous translator was inexperienced, without access to a reliable dictionary, and was, probably, female.

The present volume is from the third quartile on the “sciences of the soul and the intellect,” which constitutes apreparation for the higher theology of the last quartile. The epistles’ arrangementis progressive, from the exact sciences moving onto the observable sciencesand then from the external phenomena to those internal to the humansubject. The five relatively short epistles collected here cover the Brethren’smetaphysics, philosophical anthropology, psychology, and cosmology. Abstract:
The article provides a Russian translation of the book IX of «Shincho̅-ko̅ ki». This part of the chronicle narrates the renewal of the war between Nobunaga and Honganji Temple. The followers of the True School of Pure Land besieged in Ozaka managed to inflict painful counterattacks against the forces of the “unifier of Japan”. Nobunaga detachments, trying to capture the Kizu fortress on the outskirts of Ozaka were surrounded and defeated. Ban Naomasa, one of his prominent military leaders, was killed, the army from Ozaka attacked the Tenno̅ji fortress, and only the help immediately rendered by Nobunaga saved the garrison from death. After that, Nobunaga blocked Ozakа on land and at sea. However, the fleet of the Mo̅ri house, which joined the ranks of Nobunaga opponents, and the allies of Mo̅ri were able to defeat the naval forces of Nobunaga and deliver provisions to Ozaka, which allowed Honganji to continue the struggle. Book IX also contains a description of the construction of Azuti Castle and its main tower (tenshu), Nobunaga’s residence. The unique information of the chronicle formed the basis for the further reconstruction of the tenshu’s appearance. The castle became the personification of the wealth and omnipotence of Nobunaga, a reflection of his claims to the role of supreme ruler of Japan. The wall paintings of the main tower halls manifest the influence of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. The key symbols of the images are taken from Chinese political ideology.

The aim of the article is to draw attention to the value of a translation series as an interpretation tool. Its subject is the translation series consisting of five Italian translations of Julian Tuwim’s Rzecz Czarnoleska (The Czarnolas affair). The key to the analysis is the double reference to Polish Renaissance and Romanticism by allusions to Jan Kochanowski and Cyprian Kamil Norwid. The linguistic and cultural challenges have been overcome by the translators by means of different compensation strategies singled out and commented on in the article.

Abstract:
The article provides the first part of translation into Russian of the book VI of «Shincho̅-ko̅ ki», one of the major sources on the history of Japan of the 16th century. Book VI contains a copy of the 17 articles admonitions by Oda Nobunaga addressed to the sho̅gun Ashikaga Yoshiaki. In this document, Nobunaga reproached his master for self-will, selfishness and injustice. The appearance of the instructions testified to the intensification of the power struggle between the sho̅gun and Nobunaga. Book VI narrates about the sho̅gun’s open war against Nobunaga, who was in the ring of enemies in early 1573 — Takeda Shingen, the houses of Azai and Asakurа, the followers of the True Pure Land School, led by Honganji, and other opponents sought to coordinate their actions closely. In this situation, Nobunaga spared no effort to negotiate a peace with Yoshiaki. However, the truce was fragile; the shogun again challenged his powerful vassal, who moved the army to the capital, and then forced the suzerain, who was besieged in Makinoshima castle, to surrender, and sent him into exile. For O̅ta Gyu̅ichi, the author of the chronicle, the shogun after breaking up with Nobunaga turned into an “enemy of the realm”, his sympathy is definitely on the side of Nobunaga. In addition, scroll VI tells about the victorious end of the military campaign against the houses of Asakura and Azai, whose heads were forced to commit seppuku, as well as Nobunaga’s campaign in the north of Ise province with the aim of subjugating the local samurai clans, many of whom cooperated with the forces of Ikko̅-ikki.

When Felipe Alfau’s novel Chromos was published in 1990, approximately fifty years after its creation, it was nominated for the National Book Award in the US and critics repeatedly commented on the novel’s unique language. For most critics, Alfau’s language was special because of the New York-based, Spanish-born author’s decision to write in English. Alfau’s profession as a bank translator has often been dismissed as having any relation with his literature save its disconnection from his creative writing. In this article, I argue that translation techniques are responsible for the extraordinary language of Chromos, and further, that the novel’s existence relies on the narrator’s role as a translator. Translation in Chromos is an integral and essential part of literary creation-- especially for an author working in a multilingual and multinational setting--to the extent that the novel, in its original version, impersonates a translation.

Abstract:
In the article, the author justifies the necessity to work out the principles of the approach, which would underline the principles of the commented translation of the Lun Yu (The Analects) from Chinese into Russian. The prospective authors of this translations must take into consideration both the existent translations as well as the existing comments This approach would enable to select the relevant parts from the Lun Yu, which are difficult for understanding due to The Analects which are difficult to understand due to the use of polysemantic expressions and vocabulary. The article comprises a brief textual review of the earlier versions of Lun Yu and offers a new commented translation of the two well-known fragments of the text. They are fragment 6.22 (on self-sufficiency, guided by a sense of duty) and fragment 7.17 (“on adding years”). The author suggests a new understanding of the well-known expressions, such as yan zhi 遠之 (6.22) as “Keeping distance [from ghosts and spirits]”, and xue yi 學易 (7.17) as “Study the [book of] Changes”. Likely, in the first case, it suggests “not to depend depending on the ghosts and spirits because everyone should rely primarily on himself. In the second case, it implies the act of teaching as such. The author’s results are based upon the commentaries, viz. Lun yu ji jie yi shu and Lun yu ji zhu. The yan zhi 遠之 was interpreted as “do not disturb”. And the second one is based on the found in 1973 the earliest known commentary for Lun Yu, where “Changes” yi 易 is only a homophonic auxiliary expression with the attached word yi 亦. These examples show that even the well-known and thoroughly researched text can receive new interpretation by putting it into a new boarder textual context

The commented translation from Hindi of a chapter from the Chāṅgiā rukh (Against the Night) autobiography (2002) by Balbir Madhopuri, a renowned Indian writer, poet, translator, journalist and social activist, brings forward episodes from the life of low-caste inhabitants of a Punjab village in the 1960–1970s. Following the school of hard knocks of his childhood in the chamar quarter of Madhopur, a village in Jalandhar district, Balbir Madhopuri managed to receive a good education and take to literature. In 2014 he was awarded the Translation Prize from India’s Sahitya Academy for contribution to the development and promotion of Punjabi, his mother language. Narrating the story, Balbir Madhopuri shares memories, thoughts and emotions from early days that determined his motivations to struggle against poverty, deprivation and injustice. The chapter Kore kāġaz kī gahrī likhat (Inscriptions on a Tender Mind [Madhopuri, 2010]) tells readers about joys and sorrows, hopes and fears, delights and regrets that were part of his childhood in Madhopur. Scenes from everyday life in the home village, episodes highlighting complex relations between its inhabitants — predominantly Sikhs and Hindus — intertwine with Balbir Madhopuri’s reflections on social oppression and caste inequality that still remain in contemporary India’s society. This commented translation is the third in a series of four chapters from Balbir Madhopuri’s autobiography scheduled for publication in this journal in 2020.

The commented translation of a chapter from the Chāṅgiā rukh (Against the Night) autobiography (2002) by Balbir Madhopuri, a renowned Indian writer, poet, translator, journalist and social activist, brings forward episodes from the life of Dalit inhabitants of a Punjab village in the 1960–1970s. Following the school of hard knocks of his childhood in the chamar quarter of Madhopur, a village in Jalandhar district, Balbir Madhopuri managed to receive a good education and take to literature. He has authored 14 books including three volumes of poetry, translated 35 pieces of world literary classics into Punjabi, his mother language, and edited 42 books in Punjabi. In 2014, he was awarded the Translation Prize from India’s Sahitya Academy for contribution to the development and promotion of Punjabi. Narrating the story, Balbir Madhopuri shares memories, thoughts and emotions from early days that determined his motivations to struggle against poverty, deprivation and injustice. The chapter Kãṭīlī rāhõ ke rāhī (The Thorny Path [Madhopuri, 2010]) tells readers about the destiny of low-caste Punjabis as well as about village traditions and rituals featuring Hindu, Sikh and Muslim beliefs deeply intertwined in the Land of Five Rivers. Memories of childhood joys and sorrows go side by side with Balbir Madhopuri’s reflections on social oppression and caste inequality that still remain in contemporary India’s society. This commented translation is the final one in a series of four chapters from Balbir Madhopuri’s autobiography scheduled for publication in this journal in 2020.

The question of polyvariant existence of meanings, interpretations of the poem “Hrazdan” (and its translations) by G. Alishan is considered. The novelty of the research is seen in the multidimensionality of synoptic research with an appeal to the concepts of polyvariance as a research tool, “hot” chronological periods (attention to linguistic culture) and points (anniversaries). The phenomenon of the text-heritage is studied in its historical perspective. A brief overview of the Russian-Armenian literary relationship is carried out. The Russian-Armenian literary relationship is characterized as a factor contributing to the formation of the text-heritage. The importance of the creative work researching of the outstanding Armenian figure G. Alishan is noted. The authors dwell on the history of the texts of the invariant and variants of translations into Russian, English and French (four translations). The author’s development of a synoptic model of the philological analysis of a poetic text and its translations is presented. The questions of representation of ethnocultural signs (onyms) in translation variants are touched upon. The consequences of their elimination or equivalence are commented on (the onomastic layer of the text is examined). Various translation strategies are evaluated. The features of the representation of emotions by interjections in the original and in the translation variants are compared. The technique of recursion in the refrain is revealed, its specificity in translations is discussed.

Abstract:
The celebrated novel Pornopopéia, by Reinaldo Moraes, represents a type of joycean Ulysses of the city of São Paulo’s underground in the excesses of the 1980s extended to the beginning of the 21st century. Despite its importance in contemporary Brazilian literature and perhaps because of its literary and linguistic complexity in producing its distinct humor, it has never before been translated into English. This article reports some results of a post-doctoral research in which we carried out a literary, commented translation of this epic novel. The theoretical framework of the research was based in general on a model of language from the perspective of the Theory of Genre and Register (TGR) (MARTIN; ROSE, 2008) and on Berman’s concept of ‘tradutology’ (2012), while the translation practice was informed by adaptations of Rothenberg’s concept of ‘total translation’ (2010), Frota’s Jazz Theory (1989), Toury’s ‘norms’ (1995), Milton’s (1998) discussion of metaphors for the practice of translation. Some results point to the following features as contributing to humor and presenting distinct challenges in the process of translating them: code-mixing and switching, punning haiku, rapid changes in registers from erudite to street, sonority (hard rhymes), neologisms, blends, and other linguistic, semantic and generic transgressions, along with those of a social nature. Ultimately, with this research we hope to offer the anglophone reader the pleasure of this text by Reinaldo Moraes, simultaneously disseminating Brazilian literature and culture to a broad anglophone speech community through the translation, and ultimately contributing to reflections on the practice of translation in translation studies.

Abstract:
This paper aims to share results of my translation to Brazilian Portuguese, through the Feminist Translation Studies approach of the book The Awful Rowing Toward God (1975), written by Anne Sexton,. When I did the commented translation of this book, part of my theoretical reflections went through this field of research, which demonstrates how grammatical gender can reflect hierarchies of sexual gender and, therefore, it is a topic of feminist debate and criticism. This sort of problematic is very relevant regarding language pairs such as English and Portuguese, for the first one does not have grammatical gender marking, except for pronouns and some nouns, and the second one has. As Anne Sexton is valued by the feminist literary criticism and by other feminist authors, I recognize that it is necessary that the translation of Anne Sexton's book ought to be done with a consciousness of gender for a non-sexist translation.

The article presents the figure of Karl Dedecius (1921–2016) by exploring his activity as a translator and ambassador of Polish – but also Russian – literature and culture in German-speaking countries (mainly Germany). Having spent his youth in pre-war multicultural Łódź and – after the outbreak of WW II – having been a prisoner of war in Soviet camps, in December 1949 Dedecius moved to the GDR, from where he fled three years later with his family to West Germany. For 25 years he had divided – his life between literary translation, notably poetry, work as an insurance agent and family matters, and after retiring he managed to set up the Deutsches Polen-Institut, a non-governmental institution devoted to the popularisation of Polish literature in Germany, which he led in the years 1980–1998. As one of his close collaborators states, Dedecius’s editorial legacy comprises about 200 books which he either translated, wrote or edited, with poetry translations and literary essays being the core of his literary activity. He rendered some 3,000 poems of roughly 300 Polish poets into German and composed ca. 10 books that present and analyse – chiefly the 20th-century – Polish literature; some of them also contain essays on translation, fragments of which are cited and commented in the present article. Another important source and basis of considerations is Dedecius’s autobiography Ein Europäer aus Lodz [A European from Łódź], which explains the background of the author’s life at its different stages.

Although Alardus of Amsterdam's commentary to the Latin translation of the Greek rhetorician Aphtonius' Progymnasmata by Rodolphus Agricola did not have the influence of the one by Reinhardus Lorichius, who used the partim Agricola, partim Catanaeo translation, it was published previously and served as a model to later commentaries. Thus, Lorichius and Juan de Mal Lara's commentaries exhibit many similarities with the one by Alardus as regards commented expressions and contents. However, we cannot talk of servile imitation as, in spite of the clear coincidences, we also find important differences, and every commentator shows a personal view and presents his own contributions.

In 2002, the author of Katerina Brac (1985), Christopher Reid, commented on the reception of his book, concluding, “it has been translated only once—into Polish, to my intense pleasure, by Leszek Engelking and Jerzy Jarniewicz. A Polish friend tells me their version reads extremely well” (“Katerina and Her Kind” 93). This laconic statement, aimed to round off the discussion about the success in the world of Reid's collection of poems, in fact does not end the discussion but raises questions about how and why we should approach a pseudo-translation from the standpoint of its fictitious original. In this essay I argue that reclaiming one's exoticized identity through translation can constitute an act of critical autoexoticism.

We translate it into English here and we discuss its results in detail, with a view to its possible influence in the modern theories of generalised continua. The clever solution found, in terms of Bessel functions, by Schrödinger of the problem of the vibrations of a linear infinite chain of molecules gives some important methodological hints for contemporary research.

In this article we have tried to show St. Jerome’s knowledge of Hebrew lan­guage basing on selected fragments of Quaestiones Hebraicae in Genesim (PL 23, 935A - 1010A). First of all, we tried to show how St. Jerome deals with text during translation of the Bible from Hebrew into Latin. In his work, St. Jerome tries to give the etymology of almost every proper name that appears in a given verse commented by him. St. Jerome’s effort and merit in this field are of course enormous, but sometimes even he put wrong etymology. We have shown how the author of Vulgate explains the most common Hebrew expressions and how he attempts to improve the Septuagint, and we also put forward purely grammat­ical considerations that the commentator included in Quaestiones Hebraicae. St. Jerome’s knowledge of the sacred language – perfect for those times – is a reason that in case of any doubts he is in favor of the superiority of hebraica veritas over translations of the Bible.

The Prooemium in Musicam Plutarchi ad Titum Pyrrhinum, written by Carlo Valgulio at the end of the 15th century and published in Brescia in 1507 as an introduction to his Latin translation of the Plutarchean De musica, was one of the first descriptions and re-evaluations of ancient Greek music in the Modern Age. It was an extremely important text for music theorists such as Franchino Gaffurio, Vincenzo Galilei and Gioseffo Zarlino. This text is based upon a wide range of Greek sources, almost all of which derive from Porphyry’s Commentary on Ptolemy’s Harmonics. On the basis of manuscripts that were at his disposal, Valgulio produced the first Latin translations of all of these materials, commented on them and related them to his general argument, often adding personal observations. This study examines several passages of this text dealing with psycho-musicological topics, with the conative function of music and the relationship between music and dance.

The Book of Historical Documents (Shu jing) is an ancient Chinese written monument, a collection of addresses of the ruler to the subjects and of the subjects to the rulers. The philosophical meaning of Shu jing is that it mentions or refers to the issues of a broad ideological order. These brief references either gave life to philosophical ideas, or later, after appropriate interpretation, were used by the philosophers to authoritatively confirm their thoughts. The first complete Russian translation of Shu jing was done by Archimandrite Daniil (Dmitriy Petrovich Sivillov, 1789-1871) in the early 40s of the 19th century. The translation was undertaken, first and primarily, as a teaching material assigned to students of the Chinese Language Cathedra at the Kazan Imperial University. This cathedra was first one established in Russia and the second one in Europe. Archimandrite Daniel was its first head in 1837-1844. Unfortunately, the translator have never had a chance to publish his work. Sivillov for the first time in Russian and European Sinology used a purely Chinese commented edition of The Book . The canonical text used by Sivillov and later his followers was considered and understood through the prism of modern Neoconfucianism, which, in comparison with ancient and early medieval Confucianism, reinterpreted and significantly enriched the philosophical meaning of the Shu jing . In some points of understanding of the Neoconfucian interpretation of the ancient text, Archimandrite Daniil was not only ahead of, but also more successful than his later colleagues. The text of the previously unpublished Shu jing Chapter III Da Yu mo Russian translation by archimandrite Daniil is attached.

The paper presents a commented translation of the fragment Jāna-nirdeśa (The doctrine of knowledge) from the seventh part of the exegetic compendium Abhidharmakośabhāya ascribed to the eminent medieval Buddhist thinker Vasubandhu (4th5th centuries AD). The fragment can be used as a historical source for the study of evolution of the image of the Buddha in post-Canonical treatises where the real Śakyamuni was invested with the attributes of a transcendental object of religious cult. The text explicates the conceptual differences between the great compassion (mahākāruā), treated as the Buddhas attribute, and compassion (kāruā) as a characteristic trait of enlightened ascetics (śravakas and pratyekabuddhas) and explains the postulate of identity of all buddhas perfections (the perfection of religious merits and knowledge, the perfection of the Dharmic body, the perfection of serving all sentient beings). This is the first translation based on the Sanskrit edition by P. Pradhan (Pradhan 1967: 414416).

This is a commented translation into Russian of three inscriptions on the ancient Chinese bronze vessels from the late Shang-Yin period (end of the 2nd millennium BC). The inscriptions found on bronze vessels constitute a special kind of sources for the ancient history of China. These epigraphic documents provide important, otherwise unrecorded data on life in the archaic society. Contrary to the texts of classical works, the nature of the ancient Chinese bronze inscriptions is ritualistic. They were not intended to be “read” but served as a tool of sacred communication with the world of dead ancestors. In fact, their “readers” were otherworldly forces. The correct understanding of these bronze inscriptions requires a specialist commentary. The publisher includes the inscriptions on the late Shang-Yin ritual vessels into a wide historical and cultural context. It is hoped this context will facilitate the understanding of the inherent meaning of the inscriptions. The comments will outline the range of problems associated with the interpretation of this type of sources from the late Shang-Yin period.

Background and Purpose: There is no Persian scale for assessing the quality of life of patients with thalassemia major. Thus, this study was conducted to translate and validate the 36-item thalassemia-specific Transfusion-Dependent Quality of Life (TranQoL) questionnaire. Methods: The questionnaire was first translated into Persian and then was backward-translated into English. Afterward, panels of experts commented on the Persian translation, and then its face validity was confirmed and content validity index (CVI) and content validity ratio (CVR) were calculated. The factorial structure and the reliability of the translated questionnaire were assessed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and internal consistency method, respectively. Results: The CVI and CVR of the questionnaire were .95 and .84, respectively. Five items were deleted during EFA, and 9 factors were extracted from the 31 remaining items. The reliability of the questionnaire was confirmed through a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of .9. Conclusion: The Persian translation of the TranQoL questionnaire is highly reliable and valid, and thus, it can be used as a specific measure for assessing the quality of life among patients with thalassemia.

This paper adopts a multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA) approach to analyse how meanings are produced and circulated in British major corporate digital media outlets via the multimodal notion of transduction (Kress 1997; Mavers 2011; Newfi eld 2014). Transduction is a form of translation from one semiotic system to another one, for example from verbal language to images and vice versa. However, transductions cannot be interpreted as mere transferrals from one resource to another one, and are here interpreted as multiplying meanings (Lemke 2002). As a case study, this paper will select some online columns from the Telegraph and the Guardian, drawing from a monitor corpus that is under construction to date and that includes multimodal data from the British digital press reporting on the “European migrant crisis” in 2015. The columns selected for this study deal with how people on the move are and/or should be labelled (e.g. Migrants? Refugees? Asylum seekers? Potential terrorists? See Gabrielatos, Baker 2008; Baker et al. 2008). The columns will be commented qualitatively from a multimodal critical discourse framework of analysis, with the goal of shedding light on how pictorial materials (e.g. pictures and diagrams) can amplify, reduce or even contradict what is argued in the verbal text. In the conclusive remarks, some refl ections will be presented with a view to possible future lines of research.

The results of a comparative analysis of multilingual texts - the original and the translation - of poetic works by Ossetian authors (M. Tsirikhova, A. Tsarukaev, R. Asaev, G. Dzugaev, H.-M. Dzuzzati, D. Darchieva, T. Tettsoeva) in the light of the translation interpretation by famous Russian poets of the sixties (E. Evtushenko, B. Akhmadulina, R. Kazakova, B. Okudzhava, Yu. Morits) are presented. In the course of comparative analysis, it was found that some translators resorted to adapted rethinking of the lines of a foreign language text (Yu. Morits, B. Akhmadulina). It was shown that for this purpose, in some places, translators violated the formal organization of the verse, expanded the original text by adding stanzas (R. Kazakov) or, conversely, narrowed the verse of the original (B. Okudzhava, B. Akhmadulina), but changes in the structure of the original did not affect the adequate perception of the text to recipients. The features of the implementation of the original pragmatic potential in translation are commented. It is noted that translators not only find lexical means characterized by semantic affinity with the words of the original, but also embody the aesthetic component of the literary text (R. Kazakova, Yu. Moritz) and others. It is stated that some poets deliberately resorted to rethinking the artistic reality captured by the author: in the language of translation, a new work is actually created based on the poem in the original (E. Статья содержит комментированный перевод глав с 20 по 23 и с 28 по 32 трактата Мария Викторина «Против Ария», в которых он ведёт полемику с омиусианами, последовательно опровергая их тезисы, содержащиеся в послании лидера омиусиан Василия, еп. Анкирского,«О подобосущии». Викторин видит в них не только измену Никейскому учению о единосущии Отца и Сына, но и противоречие аристотелевской логике, согласно которой подобие может быть только по качеству, но не по сущности. Во вступительной статье приводятся общие сведения об омиусианах и их позиции в истории арианских споров, а также обсуждается неоднозначная реакция западных никейцев на учение о «подобосущии». The article contains a commented translation of chapters 20 to 23 and 28 to 32 of Marius Victorinus’ treatise «Against Arius», where he makes a discussion with Homoeusians and refutes their theses, exposed in a letter of Basil, bishop of Ankyra, the leader of Homoeusians«On the similarity in substance». According to Victorinus, their doctrine is not only a betrayal of the Nicene doctrine of the consubstantiality of the Father and the Son, but also contains contradiction to the Aristotelian logic, according to which there can be a similarity only in quality, but not in substance. The introductory article provides a brief overview of the Homoeusians and their position in the history of the Arian controversy, and also discusses the controversial reaction of the Western Niceneans to the doctrine of «the similarity in substance».

Abstract:
The article represents the new facts, phenomena and trends on the early stages of Chinese journalism formation, taken from several sources, mainly (and for the first time in Ukrainian journalism studies) from the textbook on journalism theory of journalism by the Professor Li Liangrong from Fudan University (the People’s Republic of China). This is not the first attempt in Ukrainian journalism studies to learn how the Chinese pre-journalism was developed. However this is the first translation from the Chinese fragments of the text-book “Introduction to Journalism” as one of the most popular textbooks in China that was developed on the basis of scientific traditions of the famous Missouri School of Journalism in the United States. The translation from Chinese language is provided with the comments giving an opportunity to see theoretical basis of the historical aspect of formation of the media of one of the world’s superpowers, as well as the views of researchers of this country on the history of their own media, how they interpret the historical component of the contemporary Chinese journalism research. For translation, we have chosen the textbook by Professor Li Liangrong, one of the most authoritative representatives of the“old” elite of the Chinese journalism theory. The article cites the most important positions of the history of Chinese pre-journalism. For this purpose, the views of the Chinese author are the subjects to critical commenting. The historical researches from origin of the Chinese lettering to the beginning of the Qin Empire, the last imperial dynasty of China was described and commented. The article provides the Ukrainian reader with the opportunity to see for the first time in detail what views the prominent Chinese theorist has on how the history of journalism in this country arised and what are the conclusions of historical experience during this period according to Chinese colleagues. The article will also help Ukrainian media historians to understand better their own achievements and the lessons of our pre-history journalism development.

Abstract:
The article presents transliteration and commented translation of two official letters written by Mongolian administrative functionaries in the first third of the 19th c. Both were brought from Mongolia by A.M. Pozdneev. In 1898, handwritten copies were published by G.Dz. Tsibikov in the collection of materials, as a training manual for practical course in Mongolian language. The above mentioned letters still have not been subjected to any kind of scientific analysis. However, these documents represent typical examples of Mongolian official correspondence dated to the 19th c. Moreover they are abandoned of little-known facts about relationship between the authorities of the North Mongolian banners (khoshuns) and administrative structures, constituted personal subjects assigned to the Treasury of Jibzundamba Khutugtu (the Shabi).

Abstract:
There is a long conceptual tradition that interprets phenomena such as clairvoyance and apparitions as evidence for a spiritual component in human beings. Examples of this appear in the literatures of mesmerism, Spiritualism and psychical research. The purpose of this Classic Text is to present excerpts from a book by French astronomer Camille Flammarion touching on this perspective. They are selected from the introduction and conclusion of Flammarion’s L’Inconnu: The Unknown (1900), a translation of L’Inconnu et les problèmes psychiques (1900), in which he published and commented on cases of apparitions and other phenomena he collected. In his view, these phenomena showed the existence of the soul. Similar beliefs regarding ideas of the nonphysical nature of human beings and psychic phenomena have continued to the present.

Настоящая статья служит предисловием к публикации первого полного комментированного перевода на русский язык с древнекитайского письменного языка глав 4, 26–28 из корпуса моистских текстов «Мо-цзы». Данные главы связаны общей тематикой рассуждений об отношении человека, человеческого общества и высшего основателя и поддерживателя окружающего человека миропорядка, которого моисты называют «Небом». Их текст имеет первостепенную значимость для изучения древнекитайской теологической мысли. В предваряющей перевод статье проводится анализ датировки, целей написания, текстологических характеристик, стиля, структуры и тематики данных глав. Ключевые слова: древнекитайская философия, моизм, теология, Бог, небо, воля, мораль The article serves as a foreword to the publication of the first complete and commented translation of chapters 4, 26–28 of the Mozi from the ancient Chinese into Russian. These chapters are connected with each other through the general issue of the relationship between human society and the supreme founder and maintainer of the world order, which the Mohists call «Heaven». Their text is of paramount importance for the study of ancient Chinese theological thought. The article, which precedes the translation, analyzes the dating, textual characteristics, style, structure, and content of these chapters.
