Kommersiya banklarının əsas funksiyası əhalidəki pul kütləsini əmanət kimi toplamaq və onlarla müştərilərinə qısamüddətli kreditlər vermək olan banklardır. Bunlara bəzən depozit bankları da deyirlər. Banklar emissiya bankları, investisiya və inkişaf bankları, xüsusi təyinatlı banklar və kommersiya bankları kimi bir neçə növləri olduğu zaman, əksər ölkələrdə kommersiya bankları ən böyük payı təşkil edir. Onlar topladıqları vəsaitin bir hissəsini (mərkəzi bank tərəfindən müəyyən edilən depozit ehtiyatı tələbləri) gündəlik ehtiyaclar üçün ehtiyat kimi ayırır, qalan hissəsini isə ticarət və sənaye yerləşdirmələrində istifadə edirlər. These are sometimes called deposit banks. While there are several types of banks, such as issuing banks, investment and development banks, special purpose banks, and commercial banks, in most countries, commercial banks account for the largest share. They allocate part of their savings (deposit reserve requirements set by the central bank) as a reserve for daily needs, and use the rest for commercial and industrial installations. Abstract:
One of the basic problems of the banking system is the resource providing for the bank activities, and so the question of the resource potential management of the institution is actual today. The article deals with the economic essence and structure of the liabilities of commercial banks. A review of the specific features of banking and bank management defines the goal in the liability management. The dynamics of the resource base of Ukrainian banks. The article deals with the overall analysis of management problems for involved and borrowed resources of banks. Attention is concentrated on factors of banks' resources. Summarizes the main methods of deposit liability management. Considers the features of the borrowed resources management. Defines the main parameters of the resource base formation. Proposed future directions of research in the field of the liabilities management . The purpose of the study is to determine the peculiarities of managing the obligations of commercial banks and improve the methodology of this process. In the course of the study, attention was drawn to the process of forming a commercial bank's resource base, where two main management parameters need to be considered - the value of borrowed and borrowed funds and their volume. The most common source of formation of bank resources is customer deposits. The need to attract non-deposit resources arises in the event of a lack of current liquidity or as a result of an attempt to balance payment flows at subsequent dates. Further research should be directed to substantiate the methods, instruments and instruments of deposit and non-deposit policy, which will provide not only sufficient capital but also a high rating of a banking institution. It is determined that price and non-price management methods are used to provide the desired structure, volume and level of expenses on deposit liabilities. The essence of pricing methods is to use the interest rate on deposits as the main lever in the competition for free cash of individuals and legal entities. Raising the bid offered by the bank makes it possible to attract additional resources.

Abstract:
<p>The paper investigates the influence of bank capital ratio, size and loans on the profitability of a commercial bank in Jordan. It also evaluates whether returns on Assets (ROA) or returns on equity (ROE) is the better indicator that reflects bank profitability. Two Multiple regression models are used to test the influence of capital ratio, size and loans of a commercial bank on its profitability indicators measured by ROA and ROE and to detect the superiority between the two indicators for 13 Jordanian commercial banks for the period 2005-2013. The results of the study showed that capital ratio, size and loans have insignificant influence on ROA, but not on ROE except bank size. Regarding ROE, significant negative and positive influence for capital ratio and loans respectively are concluded. Although the small number of commercial banks in Jordan and some variables have not been well researched in literature, the paper presents a sight to associate bank performance/profitability proxied by ROA and ROE with its capital ratios, size and loans. Our results might assist bank management to capitalize the factors that could improve banks performance and hedge against the adverse factors.</p>

Abstract:
Objective – Corporate governance is a focus of bank managers and stakeholders, especially after the financial crisis. Contributing to firm and bank difficulties is weakness in managing internally and externally, making governance critical; even more so for banks which play a central role in the economy, allocating capital, lowering risk for businesses and individuals, and ensuring stability and sustainability. Bank failures in the crisis (2008-2016) highlighted governance and risk in developed nations and in developing ones, such as Vietnam. This paper studies governance in bank performance and risk, using theoretical frameworks and empirical study. Methodology – Fundamental governance is reviewed, for banks in particular, in two widely used frameworks. Prior research relates bank performance (share return and return on assets, ROA), risk (capital adequacy ratio, CAR) and governance (board size, BS; number of committees, NC; independent directors to total, NID). Findings – As our models show, NC and NID relate positively to bank performance. CAR has a positive link to governance. Novelty – Our recommendation is that banks in Vietnam must have effective boards to boost performance. Type of Paper: Empirical. The study was mainly intended to determine the effect of cash required reserve on commercial bank lending in Ethiopia using panel data of eight purposively chosen commercial banks over the period of eleven years (2005 to 2015). The investigation tested the relationship between commercial bank lending and cash required reserve. Eleven years financial data of eight purposively chosen commercial banks were used for analysis purpose. Ordinary least square model was applied to test the impact of predictor variable on commercial bank lending. The result suggests that, there is no significant relationship between commercial bank lending and cash required reserve in Ethiopian commercial. This study suggests that commercial bank have to give less emphasis to cash required reserve because it doesn’t weakens banks credit creation ability and does not leads a bank to be insolvent.

Abstract:
Indonesia is one of the emerging economies, which has been adopting a bank-based system in the economy. It is very important to investigate the Indonesian commercial banks’ performance given their substantial contribution to the development of the country. This thesis aims to measure and analyse the performance of Indonesian banks in terms of their efficiency and lending propensity over the period 2002-2010. The period testifies the recovery phase after the turmoil caused by the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997-98 as well as the revocation of the regulation of minimum threshold on commercial banks’ small business loans (finance) in 2001. This thesis employs frontier methods in estimating bank efficiency where both parametric and non-parametric linear programming approaches are used, namely Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA). The former is used to estimate the technical efficiencies and the latter is used to estimate the cost efficiencies of Indonesian banks over the period 2002-2010. This thesis also examines the lending propensity of Indonesian banks reflected by the tendency of their total loans and small business loans over the study period. The findings suggest that the technical efficiency of Indonesian banks tends to decrease whilst the opposite tendency is associated with their cost efficiency during the period. The downward trend of their technical efficiency stems from the fact that the period was the post-crisis of 1997-98 where banks were still unsteady to maintain high level of outputs over inputs. While the upward trend of their cost efficiency reflects their intensity to operate more economically in employing their resources during the period. The latter result testifies that Indonesian bank management took lessons learnt from the failure of their previous operations during the crisis. In addition, their total lending propensity is prone to increase over time during the period albeit they have not reached yet the optimum proportions. In contrast, their lending propensity to small businesses witnessed a diminishing pattern over the period. A regulatory change in 2001 seems to discourage Indonesian banks to lend to small businesses. Loans to deposits or lending proportions emerges to be the most important factor enhancing bank efficiency, whilst bank size and bank deposits are the foremost factors influencing the lending propensity of Indonesian banks over the study period.

Abstract:
This study contributes to the well-established efficiency literature with respect to transition economies and developing counties. Although bank efficiency has been a popular research area in both developed countries and less developed nations, it has been scarce in China mainly due to the lack of data. This study is considered as the first study that comprehensively investigates bank performance using multiple methodologies of financial ratio analysis and stochastic frontier analysis for the period of 1995-2005. The effects of a variety of governance changes have also been differentiated in order to providing policy recommendations for the on-going banking reform. Meanwhile, this study has addressed a number of methodological issues and has developed a more comprehensive stochastic distance function model by combining advantages of existing models, approaches, methods and procedures. Having experienced fundamental banking reforms for more than a quarter of century, the Chinese banking System has stridden towards a modem banking System with significant improvements in profitability, capitalization, and assets quality. Despite of these observed improvements, the banking system is still associated with relatively low profitability and capitalization, poor asset quality, and less liquidity, when benchmarking to 7 selected international renowned banks. One of the most impressive progresses has been the significant decrease in both outstanding NPLs balance and NPL ratio. However, it has noticed that the threat of NPLs problem to the economy as a whole remains unsolved. This study has rationalized economic foundations for the banking reform in China being the principal-agent theory and the budgetary constraint theory. The performance of Chinese banks has been improved and the estimated effîciency level is consistently at 75% in terms of technical efficiency, cost efficiency and profit efficiency. Employing the method of Berger et al. (2005), this study has jointly analyzed the static, selection and dynamic effects of governance changes. Joint-stock ownership has resulted in outstanding performance, while state ownership has been associated with low technical efficiency and profit efficiency but high cost efficiency. Foreign banks are more profit efficient but less cost and technical efficient (static effects). Foreign investors have rationally made their investment decisions by selecting more cost and technical efficient domestic banks, while less profitable domestic banks have been chosen for going public in line with government intension of reforming the unprofitable SOCBs (selection effects). Attracting foreign strategic investors and encouraging banks going public are two major partial privatization strategies, which have been generally proved as effective reform measures. The former tends to have positive impacts on technical efficiency and cost efficiency, while significant short-term gains in profit efficiency have faded in the long-term. The expected profit advantage of foreign ownership seems to take an even longer time to be realized. Going public strategy has resulted in performance improvement in the long-term after short-term losses (dynamic effects). We can not form a conclusion on whether the reform has succeeded, while what we can conclude is the reform is on the track with right direction. It is important to construct good corporate governance, but it is more important to ensure the good governance functioning. If those deep-rooted problems, such as government intervention and NPL problem, can not be dealt with properly in the near future, the chance of success is very small. Thus, our policy recommendations include consolidating up-to-date reform achievements, improving bank's managerial and operational skills, and reducing state's share in banks to lessen government interventions. Estimated efficiency is found to be sensitive to the differences in the definitions of outputs and inputs, especially in the presence of high level of NPLs. The income-based model is superior to the earning assets-based model in the estimation of technical efficiency. Similarly, profit efficiency appears to be more appropriate performance measures over cost efficiency. However, we suggest the use of multiple models and measures to reveal more valuable information. Moreover, in estimating cost function and alternative profit function, market average input prices are found to be more appropriate than banks' specific input prices.

Abstract:
Thesis (MDF (Development Finance))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research is influenced by and starts from the work carried out by the IMF in Swaziland, wherein they comment about the significant growth in the use of savings and credit co-operatives compared with that of commercial banks. They also report the lack of growth of the financial sector resulting in sluggish economic growth. This report sets out to establish through a survey, the attitude of the Swazi public towards commercial banks, and to establish if indeed there is a deliberate move away from commercial banks to non-bank financial institutions in general. In the process the reasons for migrating from commercial banks are established. In addition, the ultimate use of funds borrowed in general, is also investigated. Specifically for those people who use non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs), the research further probes the uses of such funds, and whether or not such funds are likely to affect economic growth. The survey is augmented by results from questionnaires responded to by selected microfinance institutions (MFIs) as a means of cross-checking and validating results obtained from the public survey. Findings are that in Swaziland, while the growth of savings and credit co-operatives (SACCOs) is acknowledged, there does appear to be a tendency to still use commercial banks by the economically active population. Borrowing tends to be for school fees, followed by the purchase of building materials for constructing rural homes on ancestral land, as well as for personal use and business activities. It also appears that the majority of users of financial intermediaries are civil servants, which comes as no surprise as government is the largest employer. The conclusion is that Swaziland’s problems with sluggish economic growth appear to be from more than a shallow financial sector, but a myriad of other reasons that have not been explored in this study.

Abstract:
Understanding strategies to prepare Millennials for leadership roles in commercial banks is critical to ensure organizational stability and success and to avoid knowledge gaps and leadership deficiencies created by large numbers of retiring Baby Boomers. Guided by learning network theory and generational theory, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies that 3 bank managers in North Carolina and South Carolina used to prepare Millennials for leadership. These 3 bank managers had a minimum of 2 years of experience leading teams of employees which included Millennials. The study included semistructured interviews to elicit detailed narratives from the bank managers on their experiences in preparing Millennials for leadership roles. Additional data included a review of public and private documents containing developmental activities and leadership program details used with Millennials. All data were analyzed and coded to identify recurring themes. Methodological triangulation was used to identify 5 key strategies used by managers to help prepare Millennials for leadership including structured development processes, generational alignment and engagement, coaching and mentoring, leveraging technology, and communications. Bank managers could use these findings to implement successful strategies to help Millennials prepare for leadership roles. Doing so promotes positive social change by identifying these strategies for bank managers to prepare key talent for leadership roles within organizations.

Abstract:
I analyze the effect of various risks faced by commercial banks on the executive compensation in banking industry. Commercial bank executives are risk averse due to the regulatory pressure in addition to board governance mechanism. Commercial banks face various risks because of the regulatory mechanism and unique asset structure of the firm. So, it is expected that they should associate their own pay and pay-performance sensitivities (PPS) with the risks their banks face. I find that bank executives associate their performance based pay with both idiosyncratic risk and systematic risk. But they associate their fixed pay only with systematic risk. The risk based PPS is also affected by the idiosyncratic risk but not by the systematic risk. Both asset return risk and insolvency risk have significant positive effect on PPS. Bank executives put significantly higher emphasis on the fixed compensation in terms of salary and bonus, and significantly lower emphasis on the performance based compensation. They also put minimum emphasis on the risk based PPS although they put significant emphasis on return based PPS. These indicate the risk-averse nature of the bank executives due to the regulatory pressure in addition to board governance mechanism.

Fei, Yue. "Women managers' careers in a Chinese commercial bank." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/39667.

Abstract:
China’s rapid economic growth since 1978 has made the country an important place to examine. This growth, though raising 800 million people out of poverty, has also created challenges for the state, one of which is how to integrate China into the global economy, and how to create understanding between distinct business practices. Increasing trade between China and the rest of the world has made it necessary to understand different cultural business practices to avoid conflict and misunderstandings. Another challenge for China is the increasing economic independence of women, which has resulted in the need to address gender inequality in the workplace in terms of women’s experience in their careers. This is a micro-ethnographic study of a Chinese bank in a medium sized city on the east coast of China, and I collected the data between July to September 2012. This includes over 492 hours of observation in the working practices of the bank, examination of 164 documents, and interviews with 51 managerial employees. The study focuses specifically on woman managers in the bank, and examines how they made their decision to work in banking, how their career developed and how they understand gender equality in the bank. It also examines whether they experience discrimination because of their gender, in what is usually regarded as a male dominated career. The study found that the women managers negotiate their gender positions moving between the established feminine and masculine characteristics in their role as managers depending on the context. However more relevant to the female managers is the cultural context of working in a Chinese bank. Guanxi was a prominent feature in this study; this was in terms of recruitment, promotion, discrimination and job allocation. The study argues that guanxi has adapted to the political, social and economic development of China, but continues to be essential for understanding Chinese culture and gender relations in the bank, which would be relevant in other industries in China. The implication is that to work with Chinese companies, other countries need to have a deeper understanding of how guanxi operates if they are able to successfully operate in a Chinese context. Furthermore, this study also postulates that traditional Chinese cultural values promote informal flexible work for women, protect their career progress during their maternity leave, encourage cooperation at work, and encourage commitment to the bank. This study contributes to the discussion on Chinese women’s career in management and argues that categories such as collectivism, individualism, feminism, and masculinity are too narrow for the complexity of the modern Chinese professional woman.

Full text
Abstract:
The 1990s saw significant increases in commercial bank membership in the Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) System and extensive growths in FHLB assets and outstanding advances. Since FHLB policies may enable risk-taking behavior by the System's member institutions, this research evaluates the impact of the FHLBs on community bank members, local consumers, and local markets. Results suggest that commercial bank liquidity is enhanced by and managed with the use of System advances, and investments in loans and mortgage-related assets increase with FHLB participation, particularly by small bank members. Credit quality and bank financial conditions improve after participating in the FHLB program, and cost savings from borrowing System funds may contribute to higher rates paid on deposits in local markets. However, banks with greater exposure to interest rate risk are more likely to become FHLB members, and interest rate risk exposure further increases after membership attainment, as the amount of advances borrowed increases, and the longer members remain in the FHLB program. Long-term advances have not been used to lengthen liability duration to offset growth in long-term asset investments, which makes the FHLB System more highly susceptible to rising rates.

Abstract:
Many Chinese commercial banks have experienced ownership transitions during the past decade, along with significant improvements in performance. In order to examine the effect of ownership on bank performance, an empirical study of Chinese commercial banks is performed. A dataset covering 16 Chinese commercial banks over the period of 2002 — 2011 is tested using linear regression model and principle component analysis. It is found that being a Joint-Stock Commercial Bank has a positive effect on earnings per share (EPS), and being a City Commercial Bank increases return on assets (ROA). On the contrary, operating as a Stated-Owned Commercial Bank affects both EPS and ROA negatively. The empirical results also indicate that undergoing initial public offering on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange helps a bank to improve performance, while the listing in Mainland China does not.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech(Business Administration)--Cape Technikon, Cape Town, 2001
During the last decade, commercial banking competition has intensified for a variety of reasons. With shareholders requirements to satisfY and, at the same time to provide ''value for money" to i!s clients, banks restructured themselves to serve niche market segments, increase critical mass by growing volume business or a combination of both. With the change in political dispensation, the urgency for banks to evolve intensified for the following prime reasons: I. The increased number offoreign banks ~ntering the South African market and cherry-picking the commercial banks' best clients and employees. This was facilitated by the foreign banks low cost of entry and low overhead cost structure coupled with cheaper availability of offshore funding for South African businesses. 2. Increased emigration rates reducin6 the availability ofskilled and trained bank employees. 3. The stagnation ofthe economic emironment resulting in low organic growth of the business client base from the traditional white o\\ned segment. 4. The largely neglected black business segment which became politically. if not economically. attractive to the local banks. Against this background. commercial ban:,s strategies changed involving restructuring the internal organisation to refocus the banking industr.. efforts in achieving its profit objectives. satisfYing and keeping its clients and attracting new clients. primarily, from the local competitor banks.

Abstract:
Compensation systems are designed by boards of directors to encourage manager performance. Severance packages are intended to provide insurance for the CEO's human value. Frequently, however, severance packages are increased upon termination by boards of directors at will. These non-contractual severance payments are called discretionary severance pay. This study investigates discretionary severance pay at financial institutions surrounding the financial crisis. Financial institutions are of particular interest as they faced unique regulations limiting the amount of severance payable to departing CEOs. There is evidence that the boards of directors engaged in regulatory arbitrage by increasing payments for the consulting and non-compete component of severance pay and decreasing payments for other components of discretionary severance pay.

Amaral, Luciano. A Monetary Plethora and What to do with It: the Bank of Portugal during World War II and the Post-War Period (1939-1960). Working Paper in Economic and Social History, February 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.55462/wpaphes_a_501.

Full text
Abstract:
Up to World War II the Bank of Portugal (BoP) was far from possessing the features normally associated with a central bank. It was still a commercial bank, although one that had acquired some central bank functions. The World War II period was decisive to change this ambiguity. The change was mostly caused by an unusually large influx of international means of payment (gold and foreign exchange) as a consequence of Portuguese neutrality during the war, which allowed the BoP to transform its balance sheet structure: the BoP became the institution centralising commercial banks’ reserves. However, all of this happened during a very disturbing period for the BoP. The BoP had been reformed to function as the manager of the escudo in the gold-exchange standard. But just a few months after the reform, the gold-exchange standard collapsed. The BoP adapted quickly to the new environment of discretion, Government interference, and nationalism. It did it so, however, in a relatively original way: it followed the trend but kept at the same time certain features of a central bank still committed to gold standard principles. This was visible during both the World War II and Post-War periods.

Full text
Abstract:
The objectives of the project were to develop a successful protocol for cryopreservation of penaeid germ plasm in order to preserve a pathogen-free broodstock nucleus for commercial exploitation of marine shrimp in aquaculture. The critical parameters to be characterized in the project were: 1. Determination of chill sensitivity and chill tolerant embryonic stages, including a full description and time course study of embryonic developmental stages. 2. Development of protocols for loading and removal of cryoprotectant agents (CPAs) from embryos; determination of optimal concentrations and duration of loading. 3. Characterization of the toxicity of the selected CP As and 4. Establishing optimal cooling and thawing procedures. Studies were performed on two penaeid species: Litopenaeus vannamei (in the USA) and P. semisulcatus (in Israel). The effect of incubation temperature on embryonic development rate and hatching success was studied in L. vannamei, showing that spawns maybe maintained at temperatures ranging from 24°C to 30°C, without compromising hatchability. Embryonic development extends from 12 hr to 19 hr at 30°C and 24°C, respectively. Studies showed that advanced embryonic developmental stages were chill tolerant in the two studied species, but P. semisulcatus could better endure lower temperatures than L. vannamei. A large number of experiments were performed to determine the optimal CP As, their concentration and duration of loading. Permeating (e.g. glycerol, methanol, DMSO, 1,2- propanediol, ethylene glycol, glucose) and non-permeating CPAs (sucrose, PVP, polyethylene glycol) were tested and several combinations of permeating and non-permeating CP As, on fertilized eggs (embryos), nauplii and protozoeae. In general, nauplii tolerated higher CPA concentrations than eggs and nauplii were also more permeable to radiolabeled methanol. Chlorine treatment intended to remove the chitinous envelop from eggs, did not increase dramatically the permeation of radiolabled methanol into eggs. Cooling eggs, nauplii or protozoeae to cryogenic temperatures, by either vitrification or slow cooling protocols, did not result in full survival of thawed samples, despite exhaustive attempts testing various protocols and CP As. Results seemed more encouraging in freezing of nauplii in comparison to eggs or protozoeae. Successful preliminary results in cryopreservation of spermatozoa of P. vannamei, will facilitate preservation of genetic specific to some extent.
