Abstract:
It has long been recognised that the 1906 General Election was of particular significance for the Labour Party. Having entered into a secret electoral agreement with the Liberal Party, this was the year in which Labour first secured a significant parliamentary presence and transformed itself from the Labour Representation Committee (LRC) to Labour Party. However, whilst historians have focused on the longer processes launched by the election, little attention has been paid to the conduct of the election itself, either in the constituencies or in relation to how a relatively unknown political p

According to the Olympic Charter, “the aim of Olympic Solidarity is to organise assistance to National Olympic Committees, in particular those which have the greatest need”. For the last five decades funding from the sale of Broadcasting Rights for the Olympic Games, allocated to the National Olympic Committees, has been channelled through Olympic Solidarity as a means of promoting development. The aim of this research was therefore to evaluate the extent to which this redistributive claim is evidenced through an analysis of the distribution of the Olympic Solidarity funding, and an insight in

This study examines trade union resistance to the post 1977 Export Oriented Industrialisation (EOI) strategies in Sri Lanka, and the possibilities of developing new strategic options. In contrast to perspectives that narrow unions to political economic dimensions, this study emphasises the cultural and the movement dimensions of unions. The purpose of the study is to understand the ways unions can regain their role as civil society actors on the basis of building worker solidarity. The study is divided into two main parts. Why did South Korea integrate multiple health insurers into a single national health insurance in 2003 while Japan maintained its fragmented insurance system based on labour market status? Why did labour in South Korea support the integration of health insurance schemes whilst labour in Japan was opposed to it? The health insurance systems in Japan and South Korea were both based on the social insurance system and fragmented on the basis of occupation and labour market status. However, these two countries have taken different reform paths. This thesis argues that the two self-undermining effec

From March 1984 to March 1985, over 150,000 British coal miners walked out on strike in protest at plans for widespread closures in the industry. Alongside the strike developed a large and diverse support movement, both within Britain and internationally. This thesis focuses on the solidarity campaign in London, a city far from the heartlands of the coal industry. The support movement outside of the coalfield areas has been relatively understudied in the years since the dispute, and this thesis is a contribution to recuperating this important history.
