The purpose of this paper is to investigate the export performance of India with ASEAN countries using the Constant Market Share method for the period 2001-2019. India's trade with ASEAN and its members is analyzed by using HS-2 digit data. The evaluation of India's export performance is based on the “market share effectnnnn”, “commodity composition effect”, and “commodity adaptation effect”. The results reveal that the increase in India's export performance stemmed mostly from a positive “market share effect” and least from the “commodity composition effect”. Abstract:
The dependence of many countries in the region on oil exports makes them vulnerable to oil price volatility. In particular, the sharp declines observed between 2014 and 2016 show how public finances weakened with significant debt increases in these countries. A strategy to mitigate the effect of sharp falls in oil prices would allow oil exporting countries to suffer a smaller impact on their public finances. This paper shows that using put options to insure against oil price hikes lowers public debt and fiscal deficits.

Abstract:
Southeast Asia is a promising market for agricultural exports, with its growing population of middleclass consumers, especially for exporters such as the United States. The region consists of: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam. Top markets in the region for U.S. agricultural and food products are the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Leading U.S. exports are soybean products, wheat, cotton, skim milk powder, and distillers’ grains. U.S. agricultural exports to Southeast Asia increased from $9.4 to $14.2 billi

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the effect of commodity price fluctuations on a commodity-exporting economy. Using Chilean and international copper market data, I find that positive copper price changes resulting from copper-specific demand shocks generate a broad GDP expansion, with no visible decline in manufacturing exports. These results provide evidence against the Dutch disease hypothesis, which posits the crowding-out effect of commodity price increases on the manufacturing sector. I then estimate a small open economy business-cycle model and find that a low degree of substitution between domestic

Abstract:
I study the welfare and macroeconomic implications of simple and implementable fiscal policy rules in commodity-dependent economies, where a large share of output, exports, and government revenues depend on exogenous and volatile commodity prices. Using a multisector New Keynesian model estimated for the Chilean economy, we find that the welfare-maximizing fiscal policy involves an actively countercyclical response to the tax revenue cycle and a mildly procyclical response to the commodity revenue cycle. Compared to a benchmark acyclical policy, the optimized rule minimizes GDP growth volatili

Cuba's economy, which has been struggling since 2016 and fared poorly during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, is facing lower tourism revenues, decreased agricultural output, energy shortages, and double-digit inflation. This continuing economic downturn is limiting Cuba's ability to import agricultural products. Along with reductions in domestic agricultural production, which have weakened Cuba's ability to supply its own food, Cuba faces a growing food security problem. To assess the extent of this problem, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Economic Research Service (ERS) applie

Abstract:
This report estimates the direct and indirect macroeconomic impact of the Brexit leave vote on the Caribbean during 2016 and 2017 in terms of economic growth, exports, tourism, and remittances. We consider six Caribbean countries (denominated as C6): The Bahamas, Barbados and Jamaica (tourism-based), and Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago (commodity-based). We find the estimated quantitative impact of Brexit(v) to be very small if not negligible.

Abstract:
Agricultural and energy commodity prices have traditionally exhibited relatively low – even negative correlation. However, the recent increases in biofuel production have altered the agriculture-energy relationship in a fundamental way. The amount of corn utilized for ethanol production in the US has increased from 5% in 2001 to over one-third by the end of the decade. This increase has drawn corn previously sold to other uses (exports, food, feed), as well as acreage devoted to other crops (e.g., oilseeds and other grains). In addition, there has been an increase in the demand for production

Abstract:
Revenues from oil and gas exports represent an important source of government budgets in some emerging countries. At the same time, these revenues fluctuate considerably due to changing global economic conditions and energy prices. Economic theory prescribes that governments should try to stabilize their economies by saving windfall oil and gas revenues and spending them in periods of price downturns. However, oil- and gas-exporting countries often run procyclical policies, that is, they increase spending during windfall periods and reduce it in the event of a shortfall, which may result in se

Abstract:
This issue of the Caribbean Region Quarterly Bulletin explores the importance of commodities for the region’s countries. While the Caribbean includes commodity producers, most members depend heavily on energy imports. The fall in oil prices was a huge relief for these countries, improving the external position, keeping prices stable and increasing the purchasing power for households. At the same time, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago were hit hard with falls in exports, revenues, and economic contractions. As usual, the Quarterly Bulletin also covers recent economic developments in The Bahamas
