Leezenberg, Michiel, and Gerard Vries. History and Philosophy of the Humanities. Translated by Michiel Leezenberg. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463724937.

Full text
Abstract:
The humanities include disciplines as diverse as literary theory, linguistics, history, film studies, theology, and philosophy. Do these various fields of study have anything in common that distinguishes them from, say, physics or sociology? The tripartite division between the natural sciences, the social sciences and the humanities may seem self-evident, but it only arose during the course of the 19th century and is still contested today. History and Philosophy of the Humanities: An Introduction presents a reasoned overview of the conceptual and historical backgrounds of the humanities. In four sections, it discusses: - the most influential views on scientific knowledge from Aristotle to Thomas Kuhn; - the birth of the modern humanities and its relation to the natural and social sciences; - the various methodological schools and conceptual issues in the humanities; - several themes that set the agenda for current debates in the humanities: critiques of modernity; gender, sexuality and identity; and postcolonialism. Thus, it provides students in the humanities with a comprehensive understanding of the backgrounds of their own discipline, its relation to other disciplines, and the state of the art of the humanities at large.

Sime, Stuart. 3. The Civil Courts. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/he/9780198747673.003.0252.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter describes the civil courts in England and Wales. It covers the composition and administration of magistrates’s courts, County Court, and the High Court; jurisdiction; High Court Divisions (Queen’s Bench Division (QBD), Chancery Division (ChD), and Family Division), and specialist courts (Technology and Construction Court, Commercial Court, Administrative Court, Companies Court, Patents Court, and Intellectual Property Enterprise Court). For most civil claims the claimant has a free choice between the High Court and the County Court. Common law claims are suitable for the Queen’s Bench Division, whereas equity claims are more suitable for the Chancery Division. The High Court should be used for the more important and complex claims.

Abstract:
Drawing from disciplines as varied as sociology, economics, psychology, family studies, political science, demography, and women’s studies, research on the division of labor comes from a rich, interdisciplinary tradition. Despite obvious links between division of paid and unpaid labor between spouses and work–family variables, particularly around issues of gender and parenthood, organizational scholars have been largely absent from this conversation. The purpose of this article, therefore, is to synthesize the recent division of labor literature, focusing on research from the past decade and a half (2000–2014), with the goal of highlighting connections between division of labor research and theories, constructs, and questions of interest to organizational scholars to facilitate integration and future research. Specifically, this article reviews common measurement methods, theoretical perspectives, correlates (antecedents and consequences), and macroor cross-national (i.e., values and policies) influences on the division of labor.

Tenney, James. The Structure of Harmonic Series Aggregates. Edited by Larry Polansky, Lauren Pratt, Robert Wannamaker, and Michael Winter. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252038723.003.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
James Tenney discusses the structure of harmonic series aggregates and provides a detailed explanation of the genesis of his HD function. He describes, through first principles (perception, simple mathematics), what happens when “two or more compound tones are sounded simultaneously.” Using simple properties of relatively prime (reduced) ratios, the harmonic series, and least common multiples and greatest common divisors, Tenney approaches harmony in the way he had suggested some thirty years earlier: “to start if possible at the very beginning, to clear the mind of loose ends whose origins are forgotten; loose ends and means become habits.” After exploring harmonic intersection and disjunction, Tenney concludes with an analysis of harmonic distance and pitch distance.

Abstract:
This chapter proves that Bruhat-Tits buildings exist. It begins with a few definitions and simple observations about quadratic forms, including a 1-fold Pfister form, followed by a discussion of the existence part of the Structure Theorem for complete discretely valued fields due to H. Hasse and F. K. Schmidt. It then considers the generic unramified cases; the generic semi-ramified cases, the generic ramified cases, the wild unramified cases, the wild semi-ramified cases, and the wild ramified cases. These cases range from a unique unramified quadratic space to an unramified separable quadratic extension, a tamely ramified division algebra, a ramified separable quadratic extension, and a unique unramified quaternion division algebra. The chapter also describes ramified quaternion division algebras D₁, D₂, and D₃ over K containing a common subfield E such that E/K is a ramified separable extension.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the unique characteristics of the European Union in conducting its external relations, including its limitations and complex division of responsibilities. The Union’s position on the international stage has frequently been seen as ambiguous. Its extensive common policies and legislation, and its extensive relations with third States and international organizations, can create the expectation that the European Union can or should act at the international level in a manner akin to that of a single State. However the Union can only act within the limits of the powers conferred on it by its Member States under the EU Treaties and the complex division of responsibilities amongst the Union’s own institutions. As such, dealing with the European Union at the international level can indeed be perplexing.
