Altman, Michael J. Heathen, Hindoo, Hindu. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780190654924.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Americans did not write about Hinduism. They did write a lot about India, however. In their representations of India, American writers described “heathens,” “Hindoos,” and, eventually, “Hindus.” Before Americans wrote about “Hinduism,” they wrote about “heathenism,” “the religion of the Hindoos,” and “Brahmanism.” This book argues that Americans debated the nature of religion, sought alternatives to American Protestantism, and hailed the supremacy of white Protestant American identity through their representations of religion in India. Representations of India reflected debates about America. Americans used the heathen, Hindoo, and Hindu Other as a foil for representing themselves. Americans of all sorts imagined India for their own purposes. Cotton Mather, Hannah Adams, and Joseph Priestley engaged the larger European Enlightenment project of classifying and comparing religion in India. Evangelical missionaries used images of “Hindoo heathenism” to raise support at home. Unitarian Protestants found a kindred spirit in the writings of Bengali reformer Rammohun Roy. Popular magazines and common schoolbooks used the image of dark, heathen, despotic India to buttress Protestant, white, democratic American identity. Transcendentalists and Theosophists imagined the contemplative and esoteric religion of India as an alternative to materialist American Protestantism. Hindu delegates and American speakers at the 1893 World’s Parliament of Religions engaged in a protracted debate about the definition of religion in the industrializing United States. The questions of American identity, classification, representation, and the definition of “religion” that animated descriptions of heathens, Hindoos, and Hindus in the past still animate American debates today.

McKillop, Heather. The Ancient Maya. ABC-CLIO, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400612800.

Full text
Abstract:
Thanks to powerful innovations in archaeology and other types of historical research, we now have a picture of everyday life in the Mayan empire that turns the long-accepted conventional wisdom on its head. Ranging from the end of the Ice Age to the flourishing of Mayan culture in the first millennium to the Spanish conquest in the 16th century,The Ancient Mayatakes a fresh look at a culture that has long held the public's imagination. Originally thought to be peaceful and spiritual, the Mayans are now also known to have been worldly, bureaucratic, and violent. Debates and unanswered questions linger. Mayan expert Heather McKillop shows our current understanding of the Maya, explaining how interpretations of "dirt archaeology," hieroglyphic inscriptions, and pictorial pottery are used to reconstruct the lives of royalty, artisans, priests, and common folk. She also describes the innovative focus on the interplay of the people with their environments that has helped further unravel the mystery of the Mayans' rise and fall.

Lei, Yuan. Humidification, Nebulization, and Gas Filtering. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198784975.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
‘Humidification, Nebulization, and Gas Filtering’ describes the therapies, which, while not essential to ventilation, are frequently applied together with it. This chapter provides a comprehensive discussion of these devices, including the clinical needs for them and their operating principles, options, and common complications. It describes the composition and operating principle of active heated humidifiers. Artificial humidification brings with it the additional issue of circuit rainout, which may require that heated wires be added to the breathing circuit. The chapter includes a table for troubleshooting issues related to active humidification. Heat and moisture exchangers or HMEs, an alternative to humidifiers, are also discussed. Finally, the chapter turns to the use of in-line nebulizers or aerosol therapy. The chapter ends with a discussion of respiratory gas filtering, which, for all the benefit a bacteria filter brings, also introduce the risk of occlusion.

Abstract:
This book is concerned with the history of the idea of human rights. It puts aside familiar questions such as ‘Where do human rights come from?’ and ‘When did human rights begin?’, for the sake of looking into connections between debates about the rights of man and developments within the history of capitalism. The focus is on England, where, at the end of the eighteenth century, a heated controversy over the rights of man coincided with the final enclosure of common lands and the momentous changes associated with early industrialisation. Tracking back still further to sixteenth- and seventeenth-century writing about dispossession, resistance and rights, the book reveals a forgotten tradition of thought about central issues in human rights, with implications for their prospects in the world today.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at controversial online and print journalistic texts that launched heated debates about the cultural politics of racial representation in postsecondary institutions in Canada and the United States. It studies the nature of the publics produced by Stephanie Findlay and Nicholas Kohler's “Too Asian?” article (2010) and Alexandra Wallace's “Asians in the Library” YouTube video (2011). By reading the influx of Asian students akin to an invasion of postsecondary institutions, Findlay, Kohler, and Wallace rework the language of Yellow Peril and other kinds of Orientalist imagery within Canadian and American contexts. The circulation of these shared Orientalist representations throughout Canada and the United States illustrates the transnational nature of dominant social imaginations bound together by common anxieties about the Asian despite the significant differences in the national histories of higher education in Canada and the United States.

Carroll, John M. Canton Days. Rowman & Littlefield, 2020. https://doi.org/10.5040/9798881814922.

Full text
Abstract:
Canton Days offers the first comprehensive history of the British community in China from the mid-1700s to the end of the Opium War in 1842. During that period, Britons and other Westerners in China were restricted to trading and living in a tiny section of the city of Canton and the small Portuguese territory of Macao. At Canton, trade between China and the West was conducted through a group of Chinese merchant houses specially licensed by the Qing government. British encounters with China in this period have been seen mainly as a prelude to war, and Britons in China usually have been characterized as single-minded traders determined to open the Middle Kingdom by any means or missionaries bent on converting the Chinese “heathen” to Christianity. John M. Carroll challenges common assumptions about the British presence in China as he traces the lives and times of the expatriates at the heart of this vital center of trade and exchange. The author draws on a rich trove of archival sources to bring Canton and its leading figures to life, concluding with the deaths of three Britons, each revealing British concerns and anxieties about being in China. Written in a clear and lively style, his book will appeal to all readers interested in British imperial history, early modern Chinese history, and the worlds of expatriate and sojourning communities.

Abstract:
A thorough, balanced examination of the controversies on the therapeutic and non-therapeutic use of steroids that covers both legal medical therapy and illegal performance enhancement. The discussions regarding the ethical, medical, and social controversies surrounding steroid use are as heated as the drugs themselves are powerful. Steroids comprehensively addresses the separate debates over steroid use in therapeutic medical treatments, sports performance enhancement, and cosmetic lifestyle choices. The contents provide balanced coverage of the complex positive and negative implications involved with using these "ingredients of youth" to evade the common ailments of old age and to overcome some of the limitations of natural biology. This book will be invaluable to students of not only health and exercise sciences, sports and sport-related fields, and medical science, but also those researching social and ethical questions involved with the use of steroids in related fields. For example, the book may be used by sociology students investigating social aspects of sports, health policy, and public role models; psychology students focusing on the role of self-image and mental health; and political science students researching public health policy.

Reinders, Eric, Taylor Driggers, Timothy S. Murphy, et al. Reading Tolkien in Chinese. Edited by Dimitra Fimi and Alistair J. P. Sims. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350374676.

Full text
Abstract:
Approaching translations of Tolkien’s works as stories in their own right, this book reads multiple Chinese translations of Tolkien’s writing to uncover the new and unique perspectives that enrich the meaning of the original texts. Exploring translations of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, The Children of Hurin and The Unfinished Tales, Eric Reinders reveals the mechanics of meaning by literally back-translating the Chinese into English to dig into the conceptual common grounds shared by religion, fantasy and translation, namely the suspension of disbelief, and questions of truth - literal, allegorical and existential. With coverage of themes such as gods and heathens, elves and ‘Men’, race, mortality and immortality, fate and doom, and language, Reinder’s journey to Chinese Middle-earth and back again drastically alters views on Tolkien’s work where even basic genre classification surrounding fantasy literature look different through the lens of Chinese literary expectations. Invoking scholarship in Tolkien studies, fantasy theory and Religious and translations studies, this is an ambitious exercise in comparative imagination across cultures that suspends the prejudiced hierarchy of originals over translations. Instead of approaching translations as inherently inferior to the original, or focusing exclusively on errors, this book treats the multiple Chinese translations of Tolkien as stories in their own right. The new Middle-earth that emerges from these retellings will help readers re-read the original in a new way. In asking what an “elf” is in Chinese, the study also asks: what, after all, is an elf? Just as Tolkien felt that fantasy can help us return to our daily lives with new eyes for the wonder of ordinary things, this journey into the Chinese Middle-earth and back again will change readers’ views of The Lord of the Rings, even if—especially if—they have read it many times. Even the basic genre classification—fantasy literature—looks different through the lens of Chinese literary expectations. Starting from a theoretical discussion of the intersection of religion, fantasy and translation, the themes for special focus include: gods and heathens; elves and “Men”; race; mortality and the afterlife; fate and doom; language and magic spells. The book focuses on three Chinese translations of The Lord of the Rings, three each of The Hobbit and The Silmarillion, as well as single translations of The Children of Hurin and The Unfinished Tales. Informed by current scholarship in Tolkien Studies, Fantasy theory, Religious Studies, and Translation Studies, this book is an ambitious exercise in comparative imagination across cultures.

Yadav, Vineeta. Religious Parties and the Politics of Civil Liberties. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197545362.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Religious parties are increasingly common in all parts of the world. Their rise in Muslim-majority countries has been particularly prominent, as they increasingly participate in elections, win legislative seats, and join governments. Since they are often founded on orthodox principles that are inconsistent with liberal democracy, the consequences of their rise and success for the prospects of liberal democratic values and practices have inspired much heated debate and discussion. This book considers a question that has been central in these debates: will the rise and success of religious parties lead to declines in the civil liberties of their citizens? This book addresses this question by focusing on a relationship that is central for understanding the politics of religious parties—their relationship with religious lobbies. It identifies the religious organizations that are actively involved in lobbying on these issues in Muslim-majority countries and outlines the policy preferences and institutional interests that motivate them. It then identifies the political and economic conditions that shape how their relationship with religious parties evolves and, when religious lobbies are able to or unable constrain the actions of religious parties. The book explains when the rise of religious parties leads to a significant decline in civil liberties and when it does not. To test its claims, it leverages original data on religious parties, religious party governments, and religious lobbies for all Muslim-majority countries for almost 40 years and uses original surveys of political elites in Turkey and Pakistan for a thorough and original analysis.

Alexander, Robert M. Representation and the Electoral College. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190939427.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book evaluates the Electoral College as it relates to relevant theories of representation. The purpose of the study is to help readers understand the ways in which the institution does or does not align with expectations relating to representative democracy. In the aftermath of the 2016 election, heated calls to abolish the Electoral College were made in large part because the winning candidate received nearly 3 million fewer votes from across the country than his opponent. At the same time, many lauded the institution for working as intended—particularly as it relates to federalism. The Electoral College is a unique institution. It is also one of the most debated institutions in American politics. Many arguments concerning the body—it protects less populated states, it helps preserve federalism, it violates the one-person, one-vote principle, it forces candidates to produce broad-based coalitions—rarely receive the depth of attention they deserve. This book sets out to do this by examining the origin, evolution, and practice of the Electoral College. Much of the controversy relating to the institution revolves around whether we rely on the original or the evolved Electoral College to inform our perspective. Understanding the origin and evolution of the body allows us to more appropriately evaluate contemporary arguments over the institution. In addition to looking at common arguments relating to the Electoral College, this study pays particular attention to its role in the 2016 election and the often overlooked but essential position of presidential electors.

Baldwin, Peter. The Narcissism of Minor Differences. Oxford University Press, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195391206.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
There is much heated rhetoric about the widening gulf between Europe and America. But are the US and Europe so different? Peter Baldwin, one of the world's leading historians of comparative social policy, thinks not, and in this bracingly argued but remarkably informed polemic, he lays out how similar the two continents really are. Drawing on the latest evidence from sources such as the United Nations, the World Bank, IMF, and other international organizations, Baldwin offers a fascinating comparison of the United States and Europe, looking at the latest statistics on the economy, crime, health care, education and culture, religion, the environment, and much more. It is a book filled with surprising revelations. For most categories of crime, for instance, America is safe and peaceful by European standards. But the biggest surprise is that, though there are many differences between America and Europe, in almost all cases, these differences are no greater than the differences among European nations. Europe and the US are, in fact, part of a common, big-tent grouping. America is not Sweden, for sure. But nor is Italy Sweden, nor France, nor even Germany. And who says that Sweden is Europe? Anymore than Vermont is America? "Meticulous, insistent, and elegant." --John Lloyd, Financial Times "A must-read...filled with intriguing facts that add nuance to what can often be a black-and-white debate." --Foreign Affairs "An exhaustive and enthralling catalogue of our commonalities that begs a reconsideration of just what it means to be European or American." --Publishers Weekly

Sommer, Udi, and Idan Franco. Emerging Republican Minorities. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2025. https://doi.org/10.5040/9798765134184.

Full text
Abstract:
How is it possible that Donald Trump, a champion of racist and anti-immigrant policies, has only attracted more minority voters since 2016? Drawing on extensive statistical analysis, this book challenges the conventional wisdom on Black, Latino, and Asian American voters. Positing a host of theoretical innovations based on diverse data sources,The Emerging Republican Minoritiesestablishes that some of the most heated debates of the Trump era—race, immigration, and relations with China—had effects on minority voters that challenged a paradigm ascribing their automatic loyalty to the Democrats. For Black, Latino, and Asian American constituents, much like for their white counterparts, minority-hostile positions are critical in explaining how members of those same minority groups vote, even for candidates whoprima facieshould not win any of their support. Udi Sommer and Idan Franco analyze detailed regression models and conduct robust empirical tests to demonstrate how minority constituencies are more ideologically diverse than commonly thought, even on such issues where we would expect near unanimity, such as opinions toward their own communities. Moreover, this diversity complicates the way we think and theorize not only about minority political behavior but also about democracy and its vitality in the Trump and post-Trump eras.

Abstract:
This is a book of unexpected drama: all eleven chief rabbis appointed in this period of unprecedented change in the Jewish communities of the Fertile Crescent became the subject of controversy and were subsequently dismissed. This took place against a background of events rarely discussed in the context of Jewish society. The book paints a colourful picture of these upheavals set firmly in the social and political context of the time and far removed from the commonly accepted image of Jewish communities in the Ottoman Empire. Jews were also affected by modernization and political conflict in the wider society of the time, and these too gave rise to power struggles. The chief rabbis were at the forefront of these confrontations. Most of them recognized that the challenges of modernization had to be met. Their openness to change stemmed from a concern for the future of the communities for which they were responsible, but they were often vociferously opposed. The communal politics that ensued were sometimes heated to the point of violence. In the latter years of the empire, many Jews came to support the Young Turks, with their promise of liberty and equality for all. Rabbis had to develop political awareness and engage in Ottoman politics. This was another source of tension within the community since the new regime punished anyone suspected of opposition severely. The book offers a lens through which to view the Jewish society of the Ottoman Empire at a time when all the traditional norms were being challenged.
