In later 1984 President Reagan announced that the US Government had given permission in principle for US private communications satellite companies to provide a limited range of international services. The companies have not been given permission to go ahead as yet: the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has to give its approval and the companies have to obtain governmental approval in other countries.

Abstract:
An international tour is a channel of intercultural communication. People from different cultural setting can easily communicate with each other and understand each other, so as to improve friendship and build up a good image of a nation. Therefore, tourists’ behaviors are an important factor in intercultural communication. Due to this reason, the author takes some cases which happened with Chinese people in recent years as an example, and then further analyzes the cases from a perspective of intercultural communication. Finally, the author gives some suggestions about how to improve Chinese behavior in international tour such as educating Chinese tourists’ awareness of civilized manners, learning some fundamental cultural knowledge of different countries and training etiquette skills for Chinese international tour. In this way, well-educated and civilized Chinese tourists would really promote a good image of Chinese people and nation in the world.

Abstract:
Communication apprehension has been identified as a major factor which inhibits an individual’s willingness to communicate and his/her ability to develop effective communication skills. While many prior studies have investigated oral communication apprehension among undergraduate students, there has been little research exploring this phenomenon among doctoral students. This study applied qualitative methodology via observation and interviews. The research subjects were international doctoral students from several Malaysian universities. The experiences of the students in communicating with examination panel during academic presentations (e.g. proposal and viva) are analysed and the factors contributing to their oral CA are explored.

Abstract:
Some reflections on why English is necessary but not enough. On 11 May 2001, as part of the EU-Japan Friendship Week, and on the occasion of the European Year of Languages, a one-day symposium on ‘The Future of Linguistic Diversity’ was held at the Japan Foundation in Tokyo: see ET67, Jul 01. In his contribution to this symposium, Professor Reinier Salverda of University College London (as the representative of the Netherlands) discussed how it may be possible to work towards successful international communication in a world that is nonetheless marked by great diversity of language. The following adapted and extended version of his EYL presentation discusses both multilingualism today and the view that English, while necessary in global terms, is hardly enough.
