Full textThis study is about showing the misunderstandings often linked with intercultural verbal and non-verbal communication.My analysis will focus on speech acts and the language used in communication. My starting point is that communication is about interactions between individuals. Elements like context, relationships not to mention the image one has of the other person have an impact on how the message is formulated and understood. My primary research will be based on my work in a British international school in Poland and on literary work.This research will demonstrate that language is not the main problem when dealing with misunderstandings but needs to be taken into account. Risks of miscommunication can arise from a lack of shared codes and experiences. Furthermore context and relations can constitute a problem not to mention the need to save face. Ultimately the use of speech acts can vary with culture.My recommendation will stress that an awareness and an understanding of mutual codes and experiences will decrease the risk of misunderstandings but not necessarily the knowledge of the language. However the huge differences in codes and attitudes not forgetting the lack of empathy and motivation can lead to miscommunication and it cannot be avoided.My conclusion will highlight the need to raise mutual awareness and to develop strategies to do so in order to minimise intercultural misunderstandings in organisations like a British International school where exposure to another culture tends to increase awareness and intercultural sensitivity

Full textTo situate the learning of a language (native or foreign) in an intercultural perspective (keeping in mind not only a social interaction but also a relationship to be built with the other) leads to the following questions : who communicate? with whom? to build this interlocutary relationship between subjects, locutors, and carriers of cultur, the learning of a dialogica l scheme of interpersonal communication should be promoted. However, this scheme participates of social practice of correspondance. This correspondance offers then a textual and relational canvas relevant to the education of experiences in intercultural communication. Into these limits, the introduction of video aims to give to the letter exchange pratice the dimension of a group projec t. In order to make "letters in video", the learners'group needs to work as a collective sender addressing its "video letter" to the receivers'group. For an open correspondance (showing the shaping of an intercultural dialogue between corresponding members) to be built though the exchange of letters in video, it will be necessary to offer a pedagogical apparatus promoting the convergence between a dialogical learning (i. E. Acquisition of relational and language proficiency) and the discovery of a letter in video specific language

Full textDuring a meal, guests are joined around dishes and games of communication. Because a meal is at the same time a physiological and a social act. The objectives to be reached in a business meal rest on the quality of relationships which individuals are able to establish during the meal in order to achieve the business itself. To establish such relationships, either they ignore cultural differences that characterize them, or they exploit them in a positive way. Through the study of meal scenes extracted from French and foreign movies, and by making interviews with actors of social life in France, the business meal has been observed according to three dichotomies: as a place of conviviality and civility, as a place of sincerity and cynicism of social representation, and finally, at the same time, as a public and private place. This observation of business meal in an anthropological perspective, which tissue is constitute by universal values, permits to analyze cross-cultural communication in order to mark the uses that individuals in business meal make from their cultural universe to reach their objectives. .

Full textThe global economic situation has seen american investment in europe double over the past six years ; besides, there is also a strong trend towards the acquisition of existing french firms or the expansion of american mncs, particularly in some specific sectors. Different attitudes originate in culture, and organizational behaviors can lead to misunderstandings. This empirical study aims at checking and analysing how values, ethics, mental and social structures, as well as communication styles and working practices may vary according to cultures. We have focused on the individual perspective and chosen a specific research-field in order for us to highlight the interactions between individual behaviors and national cultures. The research-paper first puts into perspective the different studies pertaining to the cross-cultural field and defines a theoretical research frame which explains the terminology used and sheds light on the speciflcity of the french-american contexts ; it then proceeds to emphacize the behavioral differences within a sample consisting of french and american managers working in americain mncs in alsace. Our approach is partly inductive : it enables us to analyse data according to different categories that have emerged in the course of research ; it results in mapping out clearly different patterns based on the perceptions of the sample. Our next part is interpretative : we show how the hidden meaning of speech is being evidenced, since attitudes are not objective data, but mere reflections of fugitive impressions. Last but not least, we suggest a few strategies in order to anticipate contextual cultural reactions and save time in managing them

Full textIt is noted that New-Caledonian children unequally do badly at school but how can an educational system conceived in France be perceived by local users ? This search aims at identifying the causes of poor performance at school as well as examining the supposedly cultural problems that are obstacles to communication between the different partners in this educational agreement. The first part is a study of the distinguishing features of the Caledonian society, which leads to a better understanding of the school public. This is necessary when working out new schools programmes to suit the various population attending school. The second part examines the relationship between the different partners in the agreement such as the educational institution, the teaching profession and the learners. The third part deals with the reforms to be made. Intercultural teaching should lead to Caledonian schools programmes that would fit in with the recent political agreements. Hence, the young Caledonians would get teaching aids that would match up to their expectations

Full textThis particular thesis is the studry of the cultural and ideological dialogues between china and the west which begin with an analysis of the french or english translations of the t4ests which were edited in classic chinese. This study is carried out at the diachronic and sychronic levels. Precisely in order to embetter the analysis of the ideological and cultural problems of communication which concer us. The first stage of the dialogue between these two cultures was the stage the communication between christianity and confucianism durant the last couple of centeries. The difficulties of such communication are more or less resolved today and the conflicts overcome, as well as the misunderstandings, and also, above all other things, the extreme efforts which were made towards mutual understanding. The following stage was the one of the communication between the western culture on one hand, and the taoism and bouddhism on the other. This dialogue is still quite valid nowadays. The analysis and study made of the misunderstandings and other problems which were brought by the texts which were retranlated or which were impossible to tranlate, leave also open the problematic field of communication. In such a way, we are lifting up the curtain which covers a certain area and which is going to help us determine the obstacles which on is likely to find when encountering such communication

Full textThis research is contributed to the improvement of the Home Stay, a form of tourism recently appear in Thailand that allows the visitor to stay in a house of local family. Teaching French in a university within a touristic region, it appeared to us that this type of tourism would offer advantages not only to the region and but also to our students. We formulated the Home Stay for welcoming French or French-speaking visitors by contacting the village chiefs and the villagers as well as the others foreign visitors during our visits. We asked them to fill in a questionnaire, with the foreign visitors classified into three categories: French, French-speaking and Other, which we analyzed by statistical software SPSS. In conclusion, the results of the questionnaire data point to the necessity of the intercultural mediators. In letting the foreign visitors satisfy their curiosity about the villagers' traditional way of life, their works, their fetes and their customs, and responding to the desire of the villagers, it appears that these mediators could be required on a permanent basis, in the village. In turn, we propose a linguistic and intercultural program to our students towards the goal of becoming intercultural mediators. These two competencies are also necessary for the role of mediators in a Home Stay. In order to avoid cross-cultural and misunderstanding between the villagers and foreign visitors, it is necessary to emphasize the intercultural education and communication in this program. It would allow students to obtain three components of communication competency: knowledge, skills and attributes common to intercultural mediators

Full textStudies of verbal interaction in an intercultural situation carried out until now in France have focused on French culture in comparison with other European, Asian, African, Latin-American cultures or Arab groups such as North Africans, Egyptians, Lebanese and Syrians. Other Arab cultures still remain well off this research field. Thus, it appears interesting to undertake a study of intercultural interactions, where the partners are from Yemen and France, whose language of communication is French. The work we present is to analyze, from audiovisual recordings, the difficulties of communication and the means used to overcome them. After explaining the context of the study and the theoretical framework of research, we investigate the communicative and interactional conducts of Yemeni subjects practicing the French language to determine their competence to communicate in an intercultural environment and in exolingual situation, the nature of their gaps as well as their efforts to overcome these difficulties. We identify the communication strategies implemented to repair any dysfunction or misunderstanding. The purpose of our study is, in fact, to contribute to a better knowledge of the intercultural communication by making, using (ICT), didactic proposals to the teaching of French language for Yemeni learners, because awareness of the communicative differences helps to reduce misperceptions and misunderstandings often affecting the intercultural meetings

Full textEncounters and relationships that build up between people belonging to different cultures do not only come up against the obstacle of language, although for a long time this barrier prevented the other dimensions of intercultural communication from being recognised : disparity of cultural codes and cognitive processes that private individuals bring into play in every relationship with somebody else different. The awareness of how important cultural interferences are in communication processes is relatively recent. Every private individual, who has grown up in a culture, believes that the codes of his culture are universal : the other person is different. He tackles reality through filters, screens and prisms which disort it in a way that is peculiar to his community. These filters prevent him from recognizing that there are other people using different cultural and cognitive sketches and who have other perceptions of space, time, body movements. . . All those factors favour incommunicability and representations we have about other people (prejudices, stereotypes), which generate then tensions and the failure of any communication process. If culture indeed facilitates a consensus within a community thanks to a reference to a shared history and shared values, the latter become barriers whenever they get in touch with another cultural system, attesting thus the arbitrary nature of culture

In the fourth chapter the methodology of the empirical survey in franco-german firms is explains. In the fifth chapter a lot of business case-studies carried out in parent companies and subsidiaries in transnational firms are analyzed. The final chapter explains the origin of observed differences by making use of a synchronic and diachronic modelling. The genesis and the actual situation of the two cultures, the two nations, of the religious and family structures, of the educational systems, are studied. As a conclusion the new strategic treatment of cultural differences is evoked

Full textThis thesis examines the influence of cross-cultural communication on the volume of FDI,based on case studies concerning the relationship between France and the CEEC. After general introduction,a conceptual tool is created. A historical overview of FDI flows is followed by a summary of research concerning factors that influence FDI,followed by an analysis of FDI in the CEEC. Then we analyse specifically the research that analyzes cultural factors and we finish with an overwiev of the French FDI. In second part, the results of a questionnaire are presented. We continue with an analysis of international trade and movements in the countries included in our research,focussing on economic relations with France. In last chapter we analyse macroeconomic facts concerning international trade and FDI between the whole region of seven countries and France. Finally,the general conclusion is devoted to the research conclusions,including proposals for a possible new approach to the analyzed topic

Full textThis doctoral work is devoted to the development of intercultural communication skills in the international professional context. The transversality of the field of research has revealed the need to reconcile various epistemological currents, theorizing the relationships between culture, skills, communication, identities and values. This research project was carried out on the basis of an international agreement establishing co-direction of research between the University of Bordeaux Montaigne (information sciences and communication) and the University of Friendship between People in Russia ( RUDN) (Sociology of Management). The work presents the cultural differences influencing intercultural communication, among which are those related to social structure, traditions and norms of behavior, corporate culture, habits and preferences of employees due to expectations of social roles that are awarded by educational institutions. The practical part of the study is an analysis of semi-structured interviews recorded as part of a project entitled "Russia-France intercultural professional dialogue". This is a qualitative study completed by a multiple-choice questionnaire with employees working in a country other than their country of origin (seventy interviews: 35 interviews with Russian executives working in France and 35 interviews with French managers working in Russia). To present the results of the research, the author of the thesis uses a content analysis that has made it possible to draw up a list of sociocultural elements that influence the development of professional competence in intercultural communication: the temporal dimension, the experience of intercultural interaction in moments of crisis, motivation and evolution of the status of the individual on both "personal" and "interpersonal" levels, "economic" factors and "intangible" factors such as recognition of individual, linguistic factors, an attitude towards stereotypes and traditions). The research work proposes a model for the selection and preparation of executives in the field of international cooperation. This model consists of the elements necessary to identify the main target strategies of intercultural learning models in order to apprehend at. a new intercultural experience b. an evolution of the status and professional and personal reputation of the individual c. learning foreign languages. The work introduces a central notion to the thesis, that of "intercultural cooperation space" understood as a security zone, where no one claims to destroy cultural values or traditions, but where everyone is in a state of cooperation

Full textThe influence of culture on international business negotiations is recognized by most of the specialists and researchers in the field. A more important question is to what extent and what are the consequences in agreement making. Research has focused in particular on the integrative and distributive orientations of negotiation i. E. On inherent competitive or cooperative aspects of this type of situation. Essentially based on experiments conducted using simulations, these works emphasise on the conditions enabling or preventing negotiators from reaching a higher level of mutual interest and gains both in an "intra" or "inter" cultural context. This aspect brings up a problem of measurement and of method of measuring these gains and thus defining what one can consider as an "integrative" agreement. Having presented the principle works in this domain and having studied the mechanisms inherently used in these simulations, the author presents his own simulation model. From the situation generated, this model should confirm that the integrative and distributive orientations of individuals in negotiation are a determining cultural factor for reaching integrative agreements

Full textOur thesis aims at exploring the intercultural dimension of Italian-French bilingual dictionaries. The first part represents a theoretical approach to the issue. A definition of the concepts of culture and cross-cultural precedes a study of the relationships between languages and cultures. After that, we have dealt with the following themes : the epistemological status of bilingual lexicography and its relationships with linguistics; the semantic hindrances to equivalence; the peculiarity of translation in bilingual lexicography; the contributions of semantics to lexicography. Special attention is also given to the concepts of semantic, referential and cultural gaps and to the lexical gaps in general. In the last two chapters, the focus shifts to connotation and to some approaches that stress the importance of cultural values in language (keywords, mots à charge culturelle partagée, cultural scripts, the depth dimension of language). The second part of our thesis is a corpus-based study on letter A of four Italian-French contemporary dictionaries (Boch, Garzanti, Hachette-Paravia, Larousse). We have tried, in particular, to emphasize the role and the typology of the gaps occurring in the equivalence, especially of cultural gaps. Then, we focus on culture-bound examples, which show the importance of stereotypes and shared points of view in conveying the meaning of the utterances. Finally, we deal with cultural notes and some false borrowings in Italian, in order to illustrate other aspects of equivalence

Full textIt is the aim of a historical analysis of the cross cultural issues connected in France to state the contradictory and competing ways actors comprehend their environment. These speeches are symbolic grids upon which intersubjectivity between social and political issues, is founded. Humanistic whishes seemed so often in conflict of post-empire thinking of France. ( eg, Law of the 23 april 2005, current burning issue). When a community agrees over the final meaning of all objects and events it is faced with, it will be assumed that speeches are the shaping ground of social reality, namely multicultural issues. But what about the situations when some linguistic reviews are spreading articles to society which felt these articles as alien? How a given frame of representations can be operating within a society that is not its original enonciator? The problem of the circulation of cross cultural issue, seen as discourses of historical localisation and identificationod actorsand political groups, would thus be linked to the interplay and confrontation of conflicting realities in whose relation alterity arises. When indeed conflicting speeches of cross cultural issues and social reality of the French schooling system come into contact, a community's intersubjective of agreement sharing by linguists since seventhies is either confirmed or broken. This is what this study tries to demonstrate, supported by various archives which are located in CIEP (International Center of Pedagogical Studies) de Sèvres, close to Paris. This center is very well known in France as the main pedagogical center for teaching french as foreign language. The analysis of these archives (mainely linguistic reviews) would be the way to reach our aim, namely spotlighting facts conected to cross cultural issues in France since the last thirty years. In the second part of our study, we will spotlight cross cultural practices included into of French schooling system. Historical and synchronical analysis of cross cultural issues will be the core of this PHD

Full textOnline communication is an ongoing and an ever growing phenomenon. The population involved is potentially very diverse. Communication and information research has already intensively studied this new context, but less wok has been done on the specifics of intercultural online communication. In this general context, online learning is amplifying in numbers and in approaches. It represent an interesting frame for our research as the systems and activities in the field of education and learning are an object which is particularly rich from a communication studies point of view. Our specific case study is that of an international online diploma caracterised by collaborative interactions of diverse individuals, both nationally and culturally speaking. The present research thus combines the approaches of communication studies in intercultural context, of education studies an of technological mediation with the aim to question the intercultural processes at work in this situation, concerning the learning interactions themselves as well as the community which emerges from them. We propose models to analyse the creation of shared meaning in these situations, as well as, more specifically, a grid to read shared virtual spaces. Last, but not least, our work wants to contribute to the study of intercultural phenomena and contexts of uncertainty, from the point of view of communication as well as education

Full textResearch on the dynamics of the biculturalism in the early childhood. It's an interdisciplinary approach that draws upon an extensive faculty of differents disciplines like education, psychology, sociology, linguistics, anthropoligy, etc. The principal hypothesis of this study was that the bi multiculturalism and the bi multilingualism are not source of confusion ; under the condition however, that the family and the pre-school enviroment, are favourable and colaborate together in order to create a climate of assurance, and self confidence to the bicultural, bilingual children. This research is related also to the bilingual kindergarten schools. The analysis of differents contexts and situated action in a number of french-hellenic lindergarten schools in athens, greece, constitutes the subject of the experimental part of this study. One questionnaire and a video recording of the intercultural activities of those schools were the methodological instruments that assisted me to accomplish this part of the study. The initial hypothesis was actually confirmed; the more favourable the family enviroment is towards bilingualism, the higher the degree of bilingualism is and vice versa. The results of this study demonstrated also that the identity processes of the bicultural french hellenic children are in close contact with the type of schooling of these children (either monolingual - greek or french - or bilingual - french hellenic-). It was found that there is a significant difference, as to the degree of bilingualism, among children that frequent a bilingual kindergarten or a. .

Full textThe objective of this intercultural communication research is to know how stereotypes evolve among Chinese students towards the French before and during their stay in France. What processes of intercultural communication contribute to the evolution of the content of Chinese students' stereotypes about the French and what effects do intercultural communication have on Chinese students ? To answer these questions, the research relies on an intercultural and systemic approach under constructivist epistemology. After a quantitative and qualitative analysis, the evolution of stereotypes towards the French people on behalf of Chinese students are discussed under three aspects and factors: spatial, temporal and communicational. The communication factor is considered as the most determinant factor in the evolution of stereotypes. Thus, the intercultural communication of Chinese students with French is analyzed with the aim of knowing what are the elements that influence the quality of the communication and how to apprehend the dynamic of the process of the intercultural communication. According to this research, the evolution of stereotypes can lead among the Chinese students to an evolution of their own representations (to Chinese students' evolution of their own representations) in a general way. This evolution of representations is also the consequence of the change in the socio-cultural context and the communication system. The intercultural communication between Chinese students and the French can favor a construction of the consciousness of otherness and a reconstruction of identity based on an open and critical spirit. But on the other hand, this communication with the absence of the consciousness of otherness can also damage the reconstruction of oneself and, at the same time, strengthen the stereotypes towards the Others and towards him-self

Full textThis work focuses on teaching French as a foreign language to adults in a migratory context. Observing that communication is the major problem for a teacher, the analysis will centre on verbal and non-verbal communication in teaching-learning situations. Considering that the feeling of imbalance is the starting point of any learning, this study will be mainly concerned with the concept of universal-singular in connection with the theory of culture shock. The ethnographic analysis of discourse practices and actual teachers’ practices for adult migrants in French informs us about teachers’ methodologies and the role they ascribe to languages and cultures in training sessions. This analysis shows that a comparative intercultural approach, relying on a task-based approach and the contextualized meaning of language seems to be propitious to the teaching-learning of the French language and culture, regarding bi-multilingual adult learners, who were more or less educated previously in a monolingual context

Indeed, it postulates that Art, observed and experienced at the edges of heterogeneous fields, is used as an interface for an intercultural citizenship. In this way, this Thesis is a creation research which, to verify its own postulate, was linked to three concepts based on a south-south point of view: the identity, the identity representation and the identity recognition. To structure these experimentations, this creation research was based on three artistic and cultural points that are clearly highlighted by the Agreement of Noumea. These points are: -the protection of the patrimony and its development, -the teaching and artistic practices and -the creation, the artistic dissemination and circulation of work. They led to six experimentations which allow this creation research to reveal an Oceanian fact and the interstitial culture present in New-Caledonia. The creation of these six interfaces also enabled, in an imaginative way, the creation of intercultural bridges from which it is possible to build a society that is more harmonious, in particular a democracy which accepts the plurality like a notebook with codes to build a better place : a Kaleutopia

Full textAt a time when the need for Intercultural Communicative Skills is often asserted for international and international executives working in a multicultural professional environment, the triggers likely to develop them are not well known today. This thesis aims to understand how these skills are built in mobile executives in two countries: France and Morocco.The problem that guides research concerns the rôle of the intercultural dimension in adult éducation, focusing on defining the place of initial and continuing training in foreign languages and the rôle of formai and informai continuing éducation in intercultural communication. The study does not stop at the level of the language approach or at the level of what is involved in intercultural communication, but rather at the analysis of the learning processes (on the sides of the learners), (On the side of the intercultural trainers) and their organization (on the side of the trainers). The thesis aimed to anchor the framework of the training of professionals in an intercultural approach. Such an approach amounts to contrasting the culturalist models which favor the comparison between cultures and the conception of culture as a biological data in order to be part of an approach that favors the interrelation and dynamics between cultures. Without this intercultural approach, exploring the field of professional mobility on the basis of interculturality has little meaning.Based on an empirical study associating quantitative and qualitative paradigms, some salient results, highlighted by the thesis, show that behind the intercultural discourse are many contradictions in the teaching of languages and cultures and in Formai intercultural communication. The attempt to create an in-between for cultures is often reduced to a description of the culture of otherness with direct or indirect représentations largely "folklorized". This makes learning Intercultural Communicative Skills problematic especially in the absence of clearly defined engineering in intercultural adult éducation. In addition, informai intercultural learning would seem relevant, particularly when it is based on socialization and peer reciprocity. This learning would benefit from being institutionalized in the two territories of the survey

However, the studied phenomenon - namely the return in France of the French immigrants - is not so new. Nevertheless, French immigrants are also the most likely to return to France or to continue on their migration route. The communication and intercultural relations during the pre-migratory phase can influence the future immigrants to either settle temporarily or permanently. But how can this intercultural communication influence future immigrants about their desire to migrate, prepare their migration plans, and their integration? Full textHow to educate a foreign French language (FLE) teacher with a competence in intercultural communication in a country where the daily intercultural exchanges are limited? This is an avid question for being studied in Colombia. In effect, there are researches about the intercultural, in the contexts with a lot of immigrants and with the mixture of different cultures from diverse countries. Nevertheless, in our research, the problem exists because in Colombia there isn’t this type of exchanges in the daily life of young students. The problems were born because the context doesn’t demand to have an intercultural exchange in foreign language. This situation provokes consequences like the feebleness in the competence in intercultural communication. The research is interested in showing the importance of a dynamic intercultural communication in a process of learning foreign language, the French, out of its familiar context. The research uses like instruments of information recollection: the observation, the synchronous and asynchronous intercultural interchanges, the interviews, the questionnaires, and reflexive reports. The compiler information is analyzed throw the software Atlas TI. Finally the research proposes a method for the learning of foreign languages in relation to the intercultural approach and takes account the important aspect of the city’s characteristics, where the process of learning is happening, and the students’ feature. The objective of the method suggests developing the competence in an intercultural communication in the teacher’s French Foreign language (FLE) in formation in Colombia

They face environments that tend to be increasingly demanding and unstable ; On the one hand, the globalization that shifts all borders and on the other the invasion of new information and communication technologies in all the functions of the company.Nowadays people from different cultures can be brought to work together within the same company. However, this may create misunderstandings between the concerned persons. These rivalries do not simply concern linguistic misunderstandings, but go beyond them. Indeed, the understanding, the interpretation, the way of acting and the thinking of each one, will depend essentially on its own culture. This is what has aroused our interest and has pushed us to deepen this subject to better understand the phenomenon of intercultural communication in an organizational environment and to deduce the difficulties encountered during an interaction in such a situation. And in order to propose or develop a strategy that might be available in an intercultural context, we have selected several organizations based in Morocco operating in different activities area. Full textThe « intercultural » is rarely defined by researchers or media as it is perceived as transparent while its interpretations and applications vary in many ways. This leads to misunderstandings and ambiguous positioning. In parallel, several critics and reorientation propositions arise. I intend to define the scope of the concept and its integration in educational contexts. This study is based on the analysis of six focus groups involving lecturers (-researchers) specialised in intercultural communication in higher education in Finland. It reviews the different perceptions of "the intercultural" that can be found through their discourses. I use discourse analysis from French authors, more particularly the theories of enunciation (Kerbrat-Orecchioni, 2009 ; Marnette, 2005) and an approach to dialogism inspired by Bakhtin (1977) who stated that all discourses include the voice of the Other (Rabatel, 2008; Vion, 2005). Mapping the presence of voices in the discourses of lecturers helped me demonstrate how these voices participate in the co-construction of their identity and what their impact on the teacher's conceptualization of interculturality is. The analysis revealed that a) discourses about "the intercultural" are shared in spite of its polysemic definitions and approaches and b) the different representations of the concept can vary in the speech of the same teacher, showing contradictions that can be a problem when teaching a savoir-être (life skills) to learners. This study also aimed at finding the place of a renewed interculturality in Finnish higher education and intended to dissociate the image of the intercultural as it is promoted in the country from what is actually taught in practice: the latest and ongoing changes seem to have very little impact on the way these practitioners talk about the "intercultural". I conclude asking the question of how the Finnish government can promote a coherent Intercultural Education without offering its teachers/researchers a training that could help them recognize the diverse diversities implied by a renewed interculturality
