Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Various previous researchers of journalism and media communication education demonstrated the necessity and importance for media workers to be competent in intercultural communication (IC). Slovenian researchers do not discuss these topics, and IC themes are withal mostly part of a non- obligatory courses where usual teaching and learning methods are applied. To examine the effectiveness and usefulness of different teaching/learning methods in developing students’ intercultural communication competencies, an educational intervention research was suitable, as the method is being useful mostly to solve pragmatic issues. Additionally, the study aimed at determining outgoing students’ intercultural communication competencies (ICC) – knowledge, skills, attitudes, and awareness through their cognitive, affective and behavioural dimensions. Two theoretical approaches were used – one stating that ICC are developed by learning on the ground of our innate predispositions and character and the behavioural perspective. This qualitative-evaluative research was conducted within the International and Intercultural Communication course at the first year of Graduate Study of Media Communications at the University of Maribor. It was a trilingual intercultural situation where learning activities such as role-playing, pantomime, case studies, simulations, individual exploration, and reflection were implemented, since students were not used to them. Participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, qualitative questionnaires, evaluation of class activities and a final exam were used as main research methods. Even though the group adapted very soon, the nonverbal activities were most demanding, and individual activities at home the least accomplished. Although they had theoretical knowledge, experience in public speaking, proactivity and self-reflection skills at basic level, their abstract thinking skills, self-awareness and adaptation were medium. However, they showed a great deal of persistence and creativity as a part of a collaborative and cooperative activities. Therefore, focusing on the learning activities stimulating students’ ICC as a part of a real intercultural situation in journalism and mass communication (JMC) education is recommended.

The article considers the strategic management carried out on the basis of a strategic plan, which includes among the main provisions and components of models for applying methods and methods of communication. According to the author, strategic communication planning is a process of bringing the communication structure and function in line with the main goals of the organization. The so-called strategic communications matrix, which is the focus of marketing research, includes those communication models that fit into the system of strategic communications, involve all stakeholders in the communication process, and optimize communication efforts. Considering the aspects of the development of strategic planning in Russia, the author comes to the conclusion that in the Soviet period of development, the goals of strategic planning were not expressed in the plan of strategic communications, which is a tool for managing all communication structures and processes included in the system of strategic management of the development of a particular object.

Abstract:
Digital technologies are changing corporate communication due to the opportunity to make contact via e-mail, social networks and messengers, which leads to the transformation of a company’s organizational structure. At the same time, the organizational structure should guarantee the effective implementation of communicative functions. Methodologically, the research relies on organizational theory when declaring communication to be one of the main functions of an organization that allows managing the organization and ensuring low transaction costs of internal communications. The present article aims to assess the possibility of using traces of internal corporate communication to gauge the organizational structure’s effectiveness. The authors adopt statistical and mathematical methods, such as the construction of a communication graph, clustering and comparative analysis. We process server data on intra-domain communications of the organization, build a communication graph, and evaluate various parameters reflecting its stability and flexibility and influencing the organizational structure’s effectiveness. Based on the proposed indicators, the study assesses the level of communication efficiency of each element of the company’s structure. The results of the research exploiting non-traditional sources of information and approaches allow us to evaluate the correspondence between the organizational structure and the cluster structure of communications, as well as the sustainability of internal and external communication of each element.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper discusses the effects of direct and indirect communications on social learning and task coordination in design teams. The findings reported in this paper are based on a computational model that simulates the formation of transactive memory (TM) through social learning from direct and indirect communications. Direct communications are explicit information exchanged between team members whereas indirect communication may be opportunistic and coincidental, resulting in learning and information gained through observations of the actions of others. However, team structure mediates opportunities for communication. Three types of team structures are studied, which are differentiated on the basis of their constraints on and opportunities for direct and indirect communications across the team. The differences across the team structures are investigated through a series of simulations in which team member retention, cognitive busyness of team members, and task complexity are additional moderating variables, and task coordination and formation of TM are the dependent variables. Fewer communications to coordinate the same tasks are taken as the measure of efficient task coordination. Findings suggest that reduction in communication and learning opportunities are more detrimental to the task coordination in flat teams as compared to functional teams. Indirect communications contribute more to the formation of TM than to task coordination. Flat teams facilitate the formation of TM, whereas functional teams are more appropriate for efficient task coordination, indicating that the role of TM in mediating task coordination varies with team structure.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Abstraction concepts based on process groups have largely dominated the design and implementation of communication patterns in message passing systems. Although such an approach seems pragmatic—given that participating processes form a ‘group’—in this dissertation, we discuss subtle issues that affect the qualitative and quantitative aspects of this approach. To address these issues, we introduce the concept of a ‘communication structure,’ which defines a communication pattern as an implicit runtime composition of localised patterns, known as ‘roles.’ During application development, communication structures are derived from the algorithm being implemented. These are then translated to an executable form by defining process specific data structures, known as ‘branching channels.’ The qualitative advantages of the communication structure approach are that the resulting programming model is non-ambiguous, uniform, expressive, and extensible. To use a pattern is to access the corresponding branching channels; to define a new pattern is simply to combine appropriate roles. The communication structure approach therefore allows immediate implementation of ad hoc patterns. Furthermore, it is guaranteed that every newly added role interfaces correctly with all of the existing roles, therefore scaling the benefit of every new addition. Quantitatively, branching channels improve performance by automatically overlapping computations and communications. The runtime system uses a receiver initiated communication protocol that allows senders to continue immediately without waiting for the receivers to respond. The advantage is that, unlike split-phase asynchronous communications, senders need not check whether the send operations were successful. Another property of branching channels is that they allow communications to be grouped, identified, and referenced. Communication structure specific parameters, such as message buffering, can therefore be specified immediately. Furthermore, a ‘commit’ based interface optimisation for send-and-forget type communications—where senders do not reuse sent data—is presented. This uses the referencing property of branching channels, allowing message buffering without incurring performance degradation due to intermediate memory copy.

Abstract:
This thesis presents algorithms to utilize the wireless bandwidth efficiently and at the same time meet the quality of service (QoS) requirements of the users. In the proposed algorithms we present an adaptive frame structure based upon the airlink frame loss probability and control the admission of call requests into the system based upon the load on the system and the QoS requirements of the incoming call requests. The performance of the proposed algorithms is studied by developing analytical formulations and simulation experiments. Finally we present an admission control algorithm which uses an adaptive delay computation algorithm to compute the queuing delay for each class of traffic and adapts the service rate and the reliability in the estimates based upon the deviation in the expected and obtained performance. We study the performance of the call admission control algorithm by simulation experiments. Simulation results for the adaptive frame structure algorithm show an improvement in the number of users in the system but there is a drop in the system throughput. In spite of the lower throughput the adaptive frame structure algorithm has fewer QoS delay violations. The adaptive call admission control algorithm adapts the call dropping probability of different classes of traffic and optimizes the system performance w.r.t the number of calls dropped and the reliability in meeting the QoS promised when the call is admitted into the system.

Abstract:
Enfin, Nous procédons à une étude théorique du retrait<br>In a communication network, in order to dispatch a message to the members of a multipoint group, one need to find a way of routing the messages that uses the less possible links and that takes a minimum time. This thesis deals with the simultaneous satisfaction of those two contradictory constraints, in the case where the weighting or the edges represents both the delay and the cost. After situating our work in its context, we present two impossibility theorems as well as an NP-hard variant of our problem. Then we present and compare two approximation algorithms. Those algorithms are parameterizable and allow one to favor the cost or the delay. We next deal with incremental aspects of this problem, which is a very important condition to practical applications. We begin by introducing an algorithm for adding new members to the group, that we analyze with simulations. At last, we proceed to a theoretical study of the removal of a member from the group

Abstract In the sociology of scientific knowledge and the sociology of translation, heterogeneous networks have been studied in terms of practices and so-called actor-networks. However, scientific practices are intellectually structured by codes. Cognitive structures interact and co-construct the organization of scholars and discourses into research programs, specialties, and disciplines. The intellectual organization of the sciences adds to and feeds back on the configurations of authors and texts. The social, textual, and cognitive sub-dynamics select upon each other asymmetrically. Selections can further be selected for stabilization along trajectories and then also be globalized—symbolically generalized—into regimes of expectations.

Abstract:
Abstract Smart Manufacturing (SM) is the future of the manufacturing industry. Seamless, accurate, and fast connection and communications among devices are critical for SM. By leveraging information technologies, devices can dynamically communicate with each other to increase factory production, while decreasing engineering costs. MTConnect and Open Platform Communications - Unified Architecture (OPC-UA) standards facilitate such communication. MTConnect is a manufacturing interoperability standard that provides a semantic vocabulary for manufacturing equipment to provide structured contextualized data with no proprietary format. The OPC-UA is a platform-independent standard through which various systems and devices can communicate by sending messages between clients and servers over various networks. OPC-UA enables syntactic interoperability between clients and servers. The MTConnect - OPC-UA Companion Specification integrates the two standards to provide manufacturers more efficient and powerful interoperability capabilities. In this paper, we report the test of version 1.02 of this companion specification. This specification sets a standard means of communication between MTConnect devices and OPC-UA Clients/Servers based on Extensible Markup Language (XML) structures. To test the standard, the following components have been developed: an OPC-UA Server, an OPC-UA Client, a probe that translates data structures in MTConnect XML format to MTConnect OPC-UA Companion XML format that can be recognized by the server, a MTConnect XML data parser, and a MTConnect device simulator. The activities of the standard testing include passing varying data structures and objects through the server and confirming the information is received accurately by the client. The findings of the standard testing will be provided to the standard developing organizations for improving the future versions of the standard.

Abstract:
The established FEA and CFD codes ANSYS and CFX have been coupled to support transient and strongly coupled interaction between structures and fluids analyses. The presentation will outline the technical approaches used for the communications technology, data interpolation, non-linear convergence of the implicit condition, and the mesh morphing problem. For the communications a TCP/IP socket communication system has been used that is very efficient and very portable, including within parallelized simulations. The data interpolation issue is addressed to ensure full conservation of forces and energy flow. For stability under highly interacting or non-linear conditions, the fully coupled implicit problem must be solved, or converged, at each time step. The algorithm that manages this iteration and data exchange is explained. Finally, some of the approaches used to smoothly morph the moving mesh are detailed. These capabilities are all supported in the ANSYS 10.0 software release (summer 2005).

Abstract:
The main question of this analysis is a character of mechanism of increasingly netted culture as an intercultural communication context. The shift of culture is related with tendencies of post-modernity and globalization. In fact the contemporary culture is lying on another paradigm, which has a different structure and consecution from traditional culture.” Double virtuality” and infotainment are the hegemonic characteristics of current cross-cultural communicating. The netted culture implies new forms of information representations and dynamic orientations of intercultural actions. There are the consequences of trans-informationality and cultural diffusion, which are internal processes of postmodern culture. We assume the radical transformation of idiosyncrasy of intercultural communication.

Abstract:
Parallel programs are imperative for improving performance and problem solving, having an increasing demand on implementing efficient parallel programming techniques. This entails new challenges on software testing to ensure their quality and reliability. Structural testing is a technique that allows the identification of concurrency defects by analyzing the internal structure of the program. However, the non-determinism of concurrent programs has implications in the testing activity, requiring the use of structured methods to reveal defects. Testing criteria support the selection of test cases in a systematic form by statically analysing elements of concurrent programs. We found that there are currently gaps in the definition of testing criteria contemplating scenarios with elements that are dynamically evaluated, such as the execution of communication primitives inside loops. The objective of this project is to define structural testing criteria to guide the selection of test cases, improving the reliability of concurrent programs by revealing non-determinism related errors present in repetition structures. We developed a Concurrent Defects Taxonomy, identifying and classifying concurrency types of defects found in related literature. The analysis of such defects, paths inside loops, number of loop iterations, and nested loops allow us to model the proposed structural testing criteria. We define new sets and associations related to communication and synchronization flows for message-passing programs, establishing a model for testing criteria. We implemented the proposed test model in ValiMPI, a testing tool prototype, considering the new concepts defined in our test model, generating required elements and evaluating coverage after constructing loop paths. For the application evaluation of criteria we perform an empirical study with statistical validation, indicating the results for cost, effectiveness and strength. Our experimental evaluation demonstrated that the proposed testing criteria generates required elements that support the identification of concurrency defects occurring in different loop iterations, when having communicational events with non-deterministic behavior.

Abstract:
Abstract This presents a computer control system for a turning center workstation in Computer-integrated Manufacturing Systems (CIMS) environment. The system structure is first introduced. Then, an information exchange between different devices inside the workstation is studied. These devices are made by different manufacturers so that the communication between them becomes a problem. The principle of developing a software to implement the communications is presented, which includes the use of a software platform, the development of data acquisition system (DAS) for robots, and the writing of an information request. Finally, the operations of the system is presented.

Abstract:
In complex product development, coordination is the act of managing dependencies between artifacts. Socio-technical coordination is the achievement of coordination through the alignment of organizational structures and product structures. Socio-technical coordination is achieved in hierarchical product development organizations by aligning the organizational structure with the system architecture. However, within virtual community-based product development such as open source development, the organizational structure is not designed by a central authority. In contrast, the community evolves as a result of participation of individuals and their communication with other individuals working on the project. Hence, understanding and quantifying socio-technical coordination is particularly important in open-source communities. Existing approaches to measuring socio-technical coordination are based on the congruence between ideal communication and the actual communication structures within communities. The primary limitation of existing approaches is that they only account for explicit communication between individuals. Existing measures do not account for the indirect communication between individuals and the shared knowledge that individuals working on a joint project possess. Due to these limitations, the socio-technical coordination values have been observed to be very low in the existing literature. We propose two alternate approaches to measuring socio-technical coordination based on clustering techniques. We illustrate the approaches using a case study from an open source software development community. The proposed approaches present a broader and more encompassing view of coordination within open source communities.

Abstract:
The research is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of mediatization of art on the example of virtual museums. Main objective of the study is to give communication characteristics of the mediatized socio-cultural institutions. The subject of the research is forms, directions and communication features of virtual museums. Methodology. In the process of study, the method of communication analysis, which allowed to identify and characterize the main factors of the museum’s functioning as a communication system, was used. Among them, special emphasis is put on receptive and metalinguistic functions. Results / findings and conclusions. The need to be competitive in the information space determines the gradual transformation of socio-cultural institutions into mass media, which is reflected in the content and forms of dialogue with recipients. When cultural institutions begin to function as media, they take on the features of media structures that create a communication environment localized by the functions of communicators and audience expectations. Museums function in such a way that along with the real art space they form a virtual space, which puts the recipients into the reality of the exhibitions based on the principle of immersion. Mediaization of art on the example of virtual museum institutions allows us to talk about: expanding of the perceptual capabilities of the audience; improvement of the exposition function of mediatized museums with the help of Internet technologies; interactivity of museum expositions; providing broad contextual background knowledge necessary for a deep understanding of the content of works of art; the possibility to have a delayed viewing of works of art; absence of thematic, time and space restrictions; possibility of communication between visitors; a huge target audience. Significance. The study of the mediatized forms of communication between museums and visitors as well as the directions of their transformation into media are certainly of interest to the scientific field of “Social Communications”.
