Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the Pentecostal understanding of the communion of saints by critically engaging with the ecclesiological vision of two world-class Pentecostal theologians from post-communist countries: Peter Kuzmič and Miroslav Volf. Th e paper has three sections: in the first one, a brief historical and theological overview of the doctrine of communio sanctorum is presented, to both set the stage for the core of the paper, and to point out the usefulness of reflecting on this particular ecclesiological topic. The second section offers an outline of “Perspectives on Koinonia” (the final report from the Third Quinquennium of the Pentecostal-Roman Catholic Dialogue), focusing on the first round of talks (Riano, Italy, 1985), which were on the topic of communio sanctorum. In the third section, the author presents and engages with Kuzmič & Volf ’s paper, “Theology of the Church as a Fellowship of Persons” which represents one of the earliest attempts to articulate a Pentecostal ecclesiology based on the notion of communio sanctorum. In the end, the author will attempt to show how this ecclesiological vision helps the shaping of a Pentecostal theology of public life.

Abstract:
We tend to view the narrative of a church and its involvement in mission as describing predominately either a social phenomenon or a “divine image.” To do so, however, leaves us with a single-dimensional narrative. Under the term Sanctorum Communio, Bonhoeffer developed an ecclesiology that blends these two narratives into a single, multidimensional entity. Using Bonhoeffer’s perspective, I retell the history of Golongane Wong Kristen kang Mardika, Sadrach’s Javanese nineteenth-century community, not merely as a historical community or a divine “product,” but as a liberatio communio. This ecclesiological identity involves the transformation from a peccatorum communio to a sanctorum communio.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article suggests that the narrative of human community Bonhoeffer described in Sanctorum Communio, following the categories of creation, fall and redemption, provides the framework for understanding the various aspects of human sexuality found in Creation and Fall and Ethics. A comparative study of these texts reveals that marriage and sexuality in Bonhoeffer encapsulates the human drive towards community, preserved from the fall for redemption in Christ. Understanding human sexuality within the structure of this narrative allows for a new way of appropriating and evaluating Bonhoeffer's theological anthropology for contemporary ethical reflection in the Christian community.

Abstract:
Accounts of spiritual formation which depend overmuch on individualism are likely distorted by that individualism, and this article argues that an account of collective-personhood can provide a necessary corrective to this anthropological distortion. The article begins by diagnosing the problem of individualism in formation, utilizing Charles Taylor’s Sources of the Self, and critiquing several common practices of spiritual formation. Following this, we consider Bonhoeffer’s theological vision for the collective-person from his first book, Sanctorum Communio. Next, we examine Murray Bowen’s Family Systems Theory to help us envision, from a social scientific perspective, how such a collective-personhood might look. The article concludes with a provisional model for spiritual formation of collective-persons.

Abstract:

Laksana, Albertus Bagus. "Journeying to God in Communion with the Other: A Comparative Theological Study of the Muslim and Catholic Pilgrimage Traditions in South Central Java and Their Contributions to the Catholic Theology of Communio Sanctorum." Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: James W. Morris<br>This dissertation is a comparative phenomenological and theological analysis on Catholic and Muslim traditions of pilgrimage to sacred tombs and shrines in south central Java, Indonesia. Both in the Muslim and Christian traditions, pilgrimage is a rich and complex religious practice that has served as a privileged milieu in which pilgrims and their communities attempt to foster diverse kinds of communion with God and His spiritual company of saints and other sacred figures, including the founders and paradigmatic ancestors of the local community. Precisely due to its richness and complexity as a spiritual and religio-cultural practice driven by the deeper and inclusive dynamics of communion, pilgrimage has also become a crucial practice in which a distinctive and hybrid religio-cultural identity is forged and negotiated in creative and fruitful ways--among others through the process of engaging various forms of otherness including other religious traditions and cultures--in the context of a long historical continuum that is also marked by tensions and ambiguities. Based on the underlying and multifaceted category of communion with God, the self, and the other that lies at the heart of the pilgrimage traditions in Islam and Catholicism, and guided by the method of the new comparative theology, this study attempts to offer a focused analysis of the major ways in which this dynamic of communion is played out in the deeper shared features and intimate encounters that exist between these two pilgrimage traditions in south central Java. Carried out from the perspective of the Catholic tradition, this study also seeks to explore the ways in which the extraordinary depth and breadth of these dynamics of communion in the Muslim and Catholic pilgrimage traditions--that in Catholic theology can be placed under the inclusive category of the work of the Spirit (pneumatology)--can serve as a creative avenue for a comparative theological enrichment of our contemporary understanding of the Catholic doctrine and practice of communio sanctorum ("communion of saints and the holy"). Drawing from both the most salient features of both the Muslim and Catholic pilgrimage practices in south central Java as well as the corresponding insights from the larger Islamic and Catholic traditions, this proposed pneumatological framework for a renewed understanding of the Catholic theology of communio sanctorum can be seen as the modest constructive fruit of this study's comparative theological engagement with the dynamics of pilgrimage in these two traditions. Through this process, the Catholic theology and practice of communio sanctorum is also made more richly anchored in the Catholic principles of communion, mediation, and sacramentality. And since this very process includes other religious tradition(s), the Catholic doctrine of communio sanctorum becomes remarkably inclusive and expansive as well, thus becoming a profoundly "catholic" theological vision<br>Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2011<br>Submitted to: Boston College. Abstract:
Elle donne enfin naissance à un certain nombre de pratiques sociales ou en justifie certaines comme le culte des saints, impossible à comprendre sans cette référence métaphysique puisqu'elle unit aussi le fidèle à son Dieu<br>Unanimitas, a phrase pertaining to the Christian terminology, best expresses the communion of saints in the Western part of the late Antiquity; indeed, communio sanctorum remains a rare expression that only appeared by the end of the fourth century in the writings of Nicetas of Remesiana. For some renowned converts, unanimitas became more than just a quality deemed necessary to keep a friendly relationship: it is a genuine desire for fusion that can be found between two persons who are physically remote from each other, but also between living people and others that death, be it glorious or not, has placed in a hereafter that is difficult to reach. Unanimitas can only be achieved between Christians who experience it whenever they receive the Eucharist, or within the course of prayer. A binding leaven of the Church, it is at the core of all community life, from the family to the city and from circles of friends to monasteries. Furthermore, it breeds social practices, or justifies them, such as the celebration of saints, which cannot be comprehended without this particular metaphysical reference, as it also unites the faithful to his God

Du, Toit Deon Johannes. "Virtualiteit in Dietrich Bonhoeffer se Sanctorum Communio." Thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/53074.

Full text
Abstract:
Rapid technological development has flooded modern-day society with change and innovation. Virtual Reality, one of these technologies, is modifying conventional ideas of not only entertainment and communication, but also questions the concept of reality. The roots of the underlying concepts of Virtual Reality can be traced back to the past. Metaphysically, hermeneutically and anthropologically these traces indicate why Virtual Reality is more than just the mere simulation of reality and why this technology has such an immersive influence on society. This influence is also prevalent in theology, wherein virtuality is more than just a metaphor for understanding theology and expressing faith. This study explores the value of virtuality for theology by investigating Dietrich Bonhoeffer s doctoral dissertation Sanctorum Communio of 1927. Three tenets of virtuality, being actualisation, time-space irrelevancy and collectivity are elaborated on with the aim of providing a new reading of Sanctorum Communio. Deleuzian philosophy and the technology of hypertext are indicated as two main moments in die development of actuality. This study supports Gilles Deleuze s position that virtual reality is about the reality of the virtual which causes space and time to become irrelevant, however, based on a modernistic epistemology this notion can lead to individualism and disruption. The value of actualisation is found in community as depicted in collective intelligence and reciprocity, offering a new postfoundationalist epistemology for understanding virtuality and reality. Bonhoeffer s Sanctorum Communio is thus approached via the hermeneutical key of virtuality. By investigating the sociality of the church, Bonhoeffer arrives at a Christo-ecclesiology of the church as being Christus als Gemeinde existierend. This presents a church for all space and all time, but just as community is the key to unlocking the value of virtuality, it similarly is the key to unlocking the value of the actualisation of Christ in church. This is realised through the reciprocal community of the sanctorum communio. By re-reading Bonhoeffer through the hermeneutic of virtuality, a new understanding of reality and of church is formulated.<br>Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2016.<br>tm2016<br>Dogmatics and Christian Ethics<br>PhD<br>Unrestricted

Gwinner, Detlef. "More than partnership : a contextual model of an organic-complementary communion in world mission under consideration of kenosis." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/13097.

Full text
Abstract:
With globalization the subject of partnership has become one of the main issues in World Mission. Partnerships are formed in all parts of the world in order to promote collaboration between churches, denominations, and mission organizations. Although good partner relationships are a desired objective, historical prejudices and cultural differences and bias lead to barriers which hinder good partnership relations. How can these barriers be overcome? Christian partnerships are usually only based on a collaboration of the partners and the Christian aspect in a relationship in World Mission is neglected. This study presents a theological basis for a Christian relationship in World Mission, coming from the creation of the human being in the image of God, the communion within the Trinity, especially the concepts of “kenosis” and “koinonia,” and the image of the Body of Christ. A second part of this study researches the historical and sociological aspects of partnership in order to identify barriers for a good partner relationship. The findings of the theological research will then be compared with the outcomes of the historical and sociological study and conclusions for an improvement should be presented. The foundation for mission-church relationship in a global context needs to be a spiritual relationship, since the acting partners come together on a basis of their Christian faith and are part of the universal Body of Christ. The kenotic attitude of the partners plays a major role in their relationship and the proposed model for functioning relationships in World Mission needs to be an organic-complementary communion. The last part then presents a new model for the relationship in World Mission, in which several elements of organic-complementary communion are described. These elements are living together in the Body of Christ, learning together, serving together, suffering and celebrating together, sharing together, working together, and discovering theology together. The study concludes with a proposal of a concept of a “common space” in order to show how such a new model could be lived out in the everyday relationships in World Mission.<br>Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology<br>D. Abstract:
This chapter examines the role of Bonhoeffer’s Christian concept of person in Sanctorum Communio. Many of Bonhoeffer’s readers identify this concept as the cornerstone and foundation of Sanctorum Communio, and sometimes of Bonhoeffer’s theology more broadly. Against this view, this chapter argues that this concept of the person plays a much more delimited (albeit still crucial) role in Sanctorum Communio’s argument. Rather than providing a foundation, this concept clarifies at the outset how God encounters and judges the individual human being through a concrete other following the fall. With this concept, Bonhoeffer is clarifying the real situation or standing of the human being before God and others.
