Full textBecoming global – the troublesome integration process.
The thesis is based on research in Kongsberg Automotive and its foreign subsidiaries in Mexico, U.S.A, Poland and South Korea. It is a study of how these foreign units were established and how the head office in Norway was able to integrate these units in the organization.
The purpose of the study is to improve understanding of the challenges involved in internationalization processes. To what extent are cultural, political and social differences factors to consider when creating the international organization? In what way do actors and structures influence the process and the practices that emerge?
In an international organization cultural, political and social differences may create barriers towards understanding the other. This may be further complicated by different languages, time and geographical distances. The local manager abroad is central to the development of relations between the head office and the local unit and his perception of what is appropriate and his ability to make others agree is central to understanding the various practices and solutions that emerge in the local organization.
The main motivation and challenge of the central management is to control and coordinate the international organization. The study emphasizes the usefulness of different control mechanisms and how these attempts for control were perceived locally. Through time there was a stronger reliance on mechanisms for socialization and enculturation, and while these are directed towards creating a larger consensus in the organization, these should also be seen as means for decentralized control and self-monitoring.
The various organizational entities in Kongsberg Automotive represent different communities-of-practice and to understand the interaction between these communities as learning processes is central to the study. This perspective also confers an understanding of power as a productive element in the interaction.
The implications of this study for theory and future research are in embracing the complex nature of internationalization process. Relevant for understanding internationalization processes are both actors and structures intertwined. Institutional environments are central to an understanding of how different actors perceive practices and structures, and what they see as viable solutions. Neither the international organization nor the learning processes these undertake can be torn loose from the local cultural, political and social context.

Full textSouth Africa has high levels of social need which are steadily growing. While the third sector is large and contributes substantially to social service provision, it together with government is seemingly incapable of providing adequate social services, particularly in the more poverty-stricken rural areas of the country. Among other, at the root of the third sector’s inability to adequately serve the needy, is a lack of funding caused by poor funding policies and uninformed financial resource allocation decision making. As such, this study set out to develop an automated financial resource allocation decision making model that would provide extensive organised data to better inform the allocation decision making process – the first component of the study. It was also purposed to provide a range of otherwise lacking empirical data on the third sector to determine service and staffing norms, patterns of funding and to assess financial management of this sector. In so doing the Community Chest of the Western Cape was selected to serve as the locus of the study – their existing manual allocation approach was analysed and a new more sophisticated automated model was developed. Data generated by the model pointed to a further research need, that of a better understanding of the funding and financial management practices of the third sector. This gave rise to the third component of the study, a survey of 232 beneficiary organisations of the Community Chest. An analysis of the data generated by the model and collected from the survey highlighted yet another need, the poor financial management acumen of the sector. In order to address this need and hence the efficacy of the model, a survey of 207 University of Cape Town management accounting students was conducted to determine the feasibility of using their financial management knowledge and skills to support financially and IT-illiterate organisations – the fourth component of the study. The study primarily adopted a quantitative research paradigm; the research design was exploratory-descriptive and used a primary data design with limited secondary data analysis. Data was captured in MS Access and analysed using Statistica and MS Excel. Results indicated that the country’s funding policies were wanting and that the allocation of state and state-controlled funding agency resources were not being allocated in concert with adopted policy. In almost all cases the poorer rural areas had and received fewer resources. Most organisations surveyed were not financially secured and their ability to fundraise was very limited. Their financial management ability was not good. Fortunately a substantial number of accounting students indicated a willingness to improve the financial management ability of such needy organisations. The study concludes by recommending further development of the model, utilisation of accounting students and calls for a major assessment of third sector needs, its funding and financial management. It also recommends the formulation of new funding policies.

Yu, Kun Young. "Análise da bioética na Coréia." Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo, 2010. https://tede2.pucsp.br/handle/handle/5391.
Full textThe present research aims at analyzing the Korean bioethics through the analysis of the historical, social, cultural and philosophical elements of the country to understand how such elements influenced in the constitution of bioethics in that country. The work is started through the study of scandal perpetrated by the major scientist of the country in the area, Professor Hwang Woo Suk, and by analyzing the social and political impact of such event we learnt about the values that guided the local bioethics, which are pragmatism and its strong social appeal. We will see how this science was skillfully handled for propagandistic purposes by the local government, upon attribution of a patriotic character to its development and the complicity with which an entire nation embraced this "national project" under which they placed expectations much beyond the medical benefits initially targeted. In the analysis of the factors that participated in the formation of this unique bioethics, we will analyze the association of the bioethical researches to the economic plans of the government, the influence of the several social and philosophical elements such as cultural hedonism, the local culture of pragmatic and empiric nature, the Silhak, the economic influence of the research for the community capitalism practiced in the country, and the patriotic appeal attributed thereto by the historical factors and principles such as Social Darwinism. The analysis of the aforementioned elements helps us to understand how a country so advanced in the researches on the biotechnology area, has a bioethics that is so weak in ethical content, that in last analysis it was responsible for the outbreak of the fraud in the stem cells cloning research

Many mural villages appeared in Taiwan after the Rainbow Village in Taichung went viral in 2008. They brought tourism benefits or improved the home environment, but they also caused many problems, such as the mural theme is incompatible with the local area or the tourists affect the residents' life. This allows everyone to start thinking about whether to follow the fashion, whether the mural village can attract attention or get support from the residents, or lose its own characteristics, and even cause residents to resent. This study believes that the successful case of mural village should be the residents' full participation in community affairs, residents determine the direction and development of the mural village, voluntarily maintain the works of art, and promote the external world to better know the community, the internal should be more cohesive and proud, but still maintain a good quality of life. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to derive the “Building Mural Village Process Model” by understanding the construction process of the resident participation type mural village between Taiwan and South Korea, and then insert it into the cases to examine and compare the similarities and differences, and finally give recommendations. The “Resident Participation Type Mural Village” referred to in this study is the mural village that initiated by government project, recruits art groups or artist-in-residence, and residents' active participation. Known as South Korea's Santorini or Machu Picchu, Gamcheon Culture Village has terraced terrain and unique landscapes, as well as a variety of murals and installation arts. From a backward small village, it has become one of the representative sightseeing spots in Busan. Gamcheon-dong is in the ridge of mountain, it is impossible to carry out urban renewal under the restriction of geographical location and terrain. Therefore, with the aim of preservation and regeneration, it participated in Maeulmisul Project sponsored by Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2009, and was led by an art group called “Art Factory in dadaepo”. In 2010, it participated in “Contents Fusion Tourism Cooperation Business”, and established a “Comprehensive Cooperative Strategic Relationship” between local governments, artists and residents, and they participate in and make decisions through agreement. The follow-up operation and maintenance are led by the Residents' Association, and formulated the relevant regulations for the establishment of the culture village and the support of the community. In 2012 and 2016, it participated in “Double the Joy Project” of Maeulmisul Project again, and successfully transformed into a cultural village, attracting domestic and foreign tourists, and also being the object of learning for urban regeneration standards around the world of governments. Sishu Community is located in the South District of Tainan City. In 2015, the South District Office received the subsidy from the Environmental Protection Administration for “Building a Friendly Urban and Rural Environmental Project” to assist the Sishu Community to be transformed into a mural village. The cultural and creative team and university stationed into the community and cultivate residents' artistic quality through community courses, co-finishing murals and works of art, arranging community environments with residents. They not only design cultural and creative goods with the characteristics of Sishu, but also regularly hold cultural and creative market, that is why Sishu Community has attracted attention from media reports. Due to the obstacles of road traffic and the change of work structure, Sishu Community has led to the population emigration and the community decline. Therefore, it hoped that the community will be re-created through the EPA's project subsidy. The external groups such as South District Office, Tainan City and the cultural and creative team, Tainan University of Technology guided internal groups including Wu Kuoyu Art Studio, Wan Hwang Palace, Sishu Elementary School, and Xinan Village, during the implementation of the mural village; all groups have dedicated their efforts to the community.

Full textIntroduction: Pneumonia is among the leading infectious causes of morbidity and mortality in children under 5 years globally. The chest X-ray remains the most readily available and most common imaging modality for the assessment of childhood pneumonia. Chest X-ray quality assurance is important to maintain high image quality, allowing for more accurate diagnosis. Chest X-ray patterns in a high HIV prevalence setting in children hospitalized with pneumonia in the era of bacterial conjugate vaccines has not been described. Furthermore the association between chest X-ray findings and microbiological etiology using novel models is important. Standardization of chest X-ray interpretation is important to allow comparison of research findings between studies and has been proposed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a measure of bacterial vaccine efficacy (VE). The role of Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) for chest X-ray interpretation is important, especially in countries with limited radiologists. Objectives: In this thesis we investigated the quality of chest X-rays and the impact of quality assurance activities in the Pneumonia Etiology Research for Child Health (PERCH) study, from 9 sites in 7 countries (Bangladesh, the Gambia, Kenya, Mali, South Africa, Thailand and Zambia), by quantifying radiographic errors through use of a customized quality assessment form. Within the context of the PERCH South African site, we compared chest X-ray patterns in HIV-unexposed, HIV- exposed-uninfected (HEU) and HIV-infected children hospitalized with WHO-defined severe or very severe community acquired pneumonia. Further, we evaluated the association of chest X-ray patterns with clinical parameters and its association with the PERCH Quantitative Analysis (PQA) model predicted probability of infection by a class or specific pathogens. Lastly, we evaluated the utility of CAD for identifying chest X-ray primary end-point pneumonia (CXR-PEP) versus non CXR-PEP compared to a consensus human interpretation as a reference standard. Results: A total of 747 chest X-rays in 9 PERCH sites had chest X-ray quality assessment. Collimation performed the worse of the 6 parameters, with 5 out of the 9 sites being graded sub-optimally for this. Three of the 9 sites showed a significant improvement in chest X-ray quality using a test for trend analysis. At the South African PERCH site, 920 cases were enrolled over two years, including 858 children with interpretable chest X-rays. The commonest finding was CXR-PEP, prevalent among 38% HIV-unexposed children, 33% HEU children and 60% of HIV-infected children, which was consistent between different age categories. CXR-PEP was twice as common in HIV-infected (OR 2.5; 95% CI 1.6-3.8) compared with these HIV-unexposed children. Clinical and laboratory features independently associated with CXR-PEP included the presence of severe malnutrition, fever and CRP > 40mg/dL. CXR-PEP was associated with the composite outcome of mechanical ventilation or death. However there was no single clinical or laboratory parameter that had both high sensitivity and specificity to discriminate between CXR-PEP from non CXR-PEP cases. HIV-unexposed children with a PQA model probability index > 0.5 for bacterial etiology had 2-fold greater odds (95% CI 1.1-4.1) for CXR-PEP compared to non CXR-PEP, and similarly HIV-unexposed children with microbiologically confirmed pneumococcal pneumonia (MCPP) had 3-fold greater odds (95% CI 1.3-6.7) of CXR-PEP. HIV-infected children with a PQA model probability index > 0.5 for respiratory viral etiology and PQA model probability index > 0.5 for Pneumocystis jiroveci etiology trended to have a greater odds for CXR-PEP vs non CXR-PEP. Using CAD4WHOKids for the 858 interpretable chest X-rays, for CXR-PEP versus non CXR-PEP, CAD4WHOKids had a sensitivity of 76%, specificity of 80% and area under the ROC curve of 0.850 (95% CI 0.823-0.876) compared to the radiologist consensus reading. Conclusion: Chest X-ray quality, in particular collimation was suboptimal in 7 resource limited countries, in children hospitalized for WHO defined severe or very severe pneumonia. CXR-PEP remains the most common chest X-ray abnormality in HIV-unexposed, HEU and HIV-infected children under 5 years of age hospitalized for WHO-defined severe or very severe pneumonia, even in the era of routine HiB and PCV immunization. Our findings support the literature that CXR-PEP is of limited use in HIV-infected children as an outcome measure in bacterial VE studies, due to opportunistic infections like Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia and respiratory viral infections contributing to CXR-PEP. CAD is promising as a diagnostic tool for identifying WHO defined CXR-PEP in bacterial VE trials and pneumonia epidemiological studies.

Brown, Rachel Christine. "Limitations and liabilities: Flanner House, Planned Parenthood, and African American birth control in 1950s Indianapolis." Thesis, 2017. https://doi.org/10.7912/C2SM0S.
Full textThis thesis analyzes the relationship between Flanner House, an African American settlement house, and Planned Parenthood of Central Indiana to determine why Flanner House director Cleo Blackburn would not allow a birth control clinic to be established at the Herman G. Morgan Health Center in 1951. Juxtaposing the scholarship of African Americans and birth control with the historiography of black settlement houses leads to the conclusion that Blackburn’s refusal to add birth control to the health center’s services had little to do with the black Indianapolis community’s opinions on birth control; instead, Flanner House was confined by conservative limitations imposed on it by white funders and organizations. The thesis examines the success of Blackburn and Freeman B. Ransom, Indianapolis’s powerful black leaders, in working within the system of limitations to establish the Morgan Health Center in 1947. Ransom and Blackburn received monetary support from the United Fund, the Indianapolis Foundation, and the U.S. Children’s Bureau, which stationed one of its physicians, Walter H. Maddux, in Indianapolis. The Center also worked as a part of the Indianapolis City Board of Health’s public health program. These organizations and individuals did not support birth control at this time and would greatly influence Blackburn’s decision about providing contraceptives. In 1951, Planned Parenthood approached Blackburn about adding birth control to the services at Morgan Health Center. Blackburn refused, citing the Catholic influence on the Flanner House board. While acknowledging the anti-birth control stance of Indianapolis Catholics, the thesis focuses on other factors that contributed to Blackburn’s decision and argues that the position of Flanner House as a black organization funded by conservative white organizations had more impact than any religious sentiment; birth control would have been a liability for the Morgan Health Center as adding contraceptives could have threatened the funding the Center needed in order to serve the African American community. Finally, the position of Planned Parenthood and Flanner House as subordinate organizations operating within the limitations of Indianapolis society are compared and found to be similar.
