Abstract:
The objective of the research was to analyze the text in the Letter to the Christian Community of Ephesus. (Ap 2,1-7), the general literary characteristics, the structure, the literary genre, the purpose, the context of the community in its Christian way of life, the challenges and responses during persecution in the Roman Empire and in the adversity of religious pluralism in the post-apostolic time (96-130 AD), thus building some ways to help the present Christian communities to face their own challenges. By means of a bibliographical approach, a study review was conducted, based on the axis text-context, with the adoption of content analysis on two levels: critical or contextual analysis and text analysis. The first chapter presents the historical context in which the text was produced: time and sociopolitical, economic and religious reality in Asia Minor and in the city of Ephesus in the 1st century AD, the persecution and religious plurality of the Christians in the Ephesians community, during the post-apostolic period. The chapter also brings the reflections of the historical moment of persecution and religious plurality in the practice and life of the Christians in the Ephesians community, in order to help elucidate the steps they took to respond to the challenges caused by the persecution in the Roman Empire and the religious plurality in Asia Minor. The second chapter is about the general literary characteristics, the origin and the formation of the apocalyptic movement, the time, the place, the addressees, the structure, the literary genre and the purpose of the text in Ap 2,1-7. The third chapter presents the analysis of the path taken by the Base Ecclesial Communities in Brazil and in the Diocese of Rondonopolis MT, the reflection and the construction of some responses, in light of Ap 2,1-7, of how communities may respond to the present challenges. Looking at the third generation of Christian communities has been an analytical exercise, inspiring alternatives for community life that need to be built in face of the challenges posed to Christians in our time. The text in Ap 2,1-7 may be taken as a parameter, for it reveals our Christian identity, an identity that should not be subject to change in adverse times and that should lead us to a more enthusiastic testimony and fidelity in following Jesus.

Salvador

Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation of Karl Barth’s theology in the turbulent and dynamic years of his nascent career: 1915 – 1922, with a special focus on the manner in which he construed Christian and ecclesial existence. The thesis argues that Karl Barth developed his theology with an explicit ecclesial and ethical motive, that is, he developed his theology as a deliberate attempt to shape the ethical life of the church in the context within which he lived and worked. It contends that criticisms suggesting that Barth does not have an ethics are inaccurate assessments of his work, and in fact, that although it is evident that his ethical thought continued to develop throughout his career, major trajectories of Barth’s development are present in germinal form even at this early stage. Following the lead and suggestion of John Webster, the thesis adopts a chronological and exegetical reading of Barth’s work from his initial dispute with his liberal heritage circa 1915 until the publication of the second edition of his commentary on Romans. Materials examined from this period include sermons, lectures, book reviews, personal correspondence and biblical commentaries, with particular care being taken to identify the occasion and historical context within which Barth presented his thought. This reading seeks to uncover and present the development, structure, content and logic of Barth’s own thought, in hope that the central concerns of this thesis will be validated. Examination of these materials has indeed shown that Barth developed his theology with an ecclesio-ethical motive. The significance of this thesis is twofold. First, it contributes to broader understanding of Barth’s theology both in its early development, and with regard to his ecclesiology and ethics. Second, it provides a significant framework and material for contemporary ecclesial reflection on its own identity and mission.

Uffman, Craig David. "How the mind of Christ is formed in community : the ecclesial ethics of Richard Hooker." Thesis, Durham University, 2015. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/10971/.

Full text
Abstract:
How do practices contribute to the formation of the mind of Christ in community such that the community truly becomes the body of Christ?” This dissertation demonstrates that Christ acts on his Church through a complex interaction of community and practices to generate the identity, diversity, and virtue of his body. This is a controversial claim because many hold that the matter of virtue rightly consists of adherence to cherished foundations like Scripture and tradition accompanied by calls to obedience. Nonetheless, this study seeks to identify resources to help the Church imagine a virtue ethics appropriate to a 21st century communion ecclesiology. It does so by reading Richard Hooker as an ecclesial ethicist. Examining Hooker’s accounts of Scripture, participation, and liturgical practices, the dissertation develops a Hookerian account that extends the ecclesial ethics of Stanley Hauerwas and Sam Wells on both ends. On the front end, it derives from first principles an account of how humans come to see themselves as part of the theodrama in which improvisation is required. On the back end, it grounds improvisation in a theory of mimetic virtue. Along the way it shows how a largely Barthian Christology coheres with a positive account of sacramental practices and that a Hauerwasian emphasis on practices is not sectarian. Hooker’s repudiation of appeals to timeless absolutes in ethical reasoning and his demonstration that the self-ordering of the Church is phronetic action means that contemporary “liberal accommodationism” and “postliberal traditionalism” can no longer coopt Hooker to justify their ideologies.

Abstract:
A crise paroquial é inevitável!
Great are the urban challenges for the Church today because it has not accompanied the signs of changes of epoch. The parish, the most basic cell of the Church, is the ecclesial configuration that is most affected by the new socialcultural-religious sensibility, strongly impressed by individualism and subjectivity. It challenges all parochial institution structure: the presupposed pastorals, the methods of evangelization, and furthermore, it strongly protest against an exaggerated dominance of bureaucracy present in the Church. A parochial crisis is inevitable! Gradually, the parish has been loosing its place as the place for the ecclesial community life for the urban man. It´s a need and an urgency to ransom the community spirit of the parish. This is only made possible through profound changes in its structure. Just as urgent, is the need of changing the way of thinking of those who are responsible for the parish. Centralizing authority and being authoritarian are not only contrary to the Gospel, but also they do not allow for the building of the ecclesial community. Clues for the restructuring of the parish lead to the highlighting of the human being, the importance of its aspirations, gifts and charismas. The norms, the institution, the Canonical Rights cannot smother the greater reality that is the human being. In the same perspective, the fundamental option of the renewal of the parishes, should be the creation of small communities, following the examples of the new ecclesial communities, where the sharing, the daily relationships and commom knowledge are more intense. Only through small communities will we be able to reach the greater goal, to transform the parish community of communities. New ways of making the parish present in the urban world demands the ransom of the missionary spirit with creativity and with dare.

Abstract:
Alternatives are required to replace the dominant paradigm of modernization if the residents and communities of Canada's Northwest Territories are to benefit fully from northern development activities. One such alternative is a bottom-up, community-based development process wherein communities engage in active planning to control and manage the resources of their regions. The purpose of this study is to investigate the implications of staple theory, a model of economic growth based on the export of primary resources, and community development approaches for development in the Northwest Territories. The thesis is that an Anarchist formulation of staple theory provides a theoretical foundation for an alternative, community-based approach to northern regional development. The study describes the contexts of development theory, Canadian regional development, and the dependent nature of northern development. Staple theory, in a basic descriptive form, is then introduced. The prescriptive interpretations of staple theory posited by W.A. Mackintosh, H.A. Innis, and W.L. Gordon and M.H. Watkins are discussed. The study then compares staple theory's prescriptions with those indicated by the Anarchist approach to regional development and community development literature. The combined prescriptions are placed within the context of northern development. The study concludes by outlining the implications of staple theory and community development approaches for regional planning theory and practice in the Northwest Territories. In the context of northern development, the study recommends the adoption of a community-based development policy and a reconnection of regions to their resources as suggested by both the staple theory and community development approaches.
Applied Science, Faculty of
Community and Regional Planning (SCARP), School of
Graduate

Abstract:
U.S. military bases in Japan have dealt with differing levels of controversy since the end of World War II. Since the mid-1990s, this has been especially true of Okinawa. After the 1995 rape of an Okinawan schoolgirl, protests aimed at closing the Marine Corps Air Station at Futenma have received an unprecedented amount of media attention. This thesis examines the relative level of controversy at four different U.S. installations MCAS Futenma, Kadena Air Base, Naval Station Yokosuka, and MCAS Iwakuni. It identifies five causal factors historical anti-militarism, major crimes, civil nuisance, aviation safety, and community profile. I assess the impact of these factors at the four installations and assign a relative level of controversy to each of the bases. I found that Futenma is the most controversial. It is followed closely by its neighbor, Kadena. Next, due to its nature as an aviation facility, is Iwakuni. Yokosuka is, by a fairly wide margin, the least controversial of the four cases. The historical anti-militarism endemic to Okinawa is the primary driver of controversy in Japanese base politics, while aviation safety concerns and community profile are also significant. Major crimes, despite the media focus generate little controversy by themselves.

This thesis seeks to analyze the group processes such as resistance force, political implication and care of the self that belong to the ecclesial community Sao Joao Batista, in Arroio da Manteiga district, Sao Leopoldo city, located in the Diocese of Novo Hamburgo, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Our methodological procedures are the following: participant observation, with data collection in a field diary, and five sessions of a focus group, up to seven participants. These sessions lasted one hour each and took place once a week. Their coordination was due to the researcher and of an observer. Our results found through this group process involving the community network Sao Joao Batista are the following: that the presence of resistance is continuous both in the political mobilization and in the mystic inside the context of the diocese, and that the process of political mobilization is active and acts in an acultured manner, because every community that is part of the network presents a different reality. It is important to highlight the relevance of the mystic aspect here, because we may realize that it is the spirituality that convenes its people towards the political action, for a conversion in behalf of the disadvantaged.

During the European occupation of the American continent, especially in Brazil, the metropolis carried out a violent imposition of habits, culture, religion and political system on their colonies. The process of evangelization was very much alike, compulsory and with no room for discussions, even though there was absolutely no concern in creating a deep general knowledge of faith. In Brazil, during the colonial and imperial periods, all persons were born catholic by imperial decree. This study assumes that religion must be seen as a part of a social, political and economic context, hence, the research includes the socioeconomic and political building of the Brazilian society. The evangelization model proposed by the Basic Ecclesial Communities is a Brazilian phenomenon, typical of the country s culture and with its origins in the lower and excluded classes. This model would not be possible without the social changes and the opening of the church as an institution to those changes, which took place in Brazil during the mid-20th century. A new, groundbreaking, form of evangelization was only possible thanks to the initiative of a clergy concerned with the poor social conditions of its people. This study intends to understand the scope of this evangelizing method and its possible extent nowadays. The evangelization led to a reflection of the existential reality and also to a political questioning, until then dominated by the Brazilian elites. This political extrapolation from the traditional channels of the church was strongly criticized by traditionalist sectors of power. Also, the new evangelizing experience was put under judgment by the ecclesiastical authorities. This study intends to investigate if the Basic Ecclesial Communities model - a new model of church, a people s church has a place in the evangelization of today s society

Mayo, Phyllis E. "Military Base Closure and Community Transformation: The Case of England Air Force Base in Central Louisiana." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2008. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/898.

Full text
Abstract:
Closing England Air Force Base (AFB) emerged as a possibility following the first Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) round in 1988. The central Louisiana community responded with a dual strategy: defense, implemented by a highly visible group of mostly elected officials who fought to save the base; and offense, implemented by a small group of professionals working in the background to develop a contingency plan. Together, they managed both sides of the change equation, political and technical, and produced a military to civilian conversion. This thesis focuses on policy issues of base closure and ingredients for success and failure among communities affected by such disruption. The main research question is: Was the military to civilian conversion of England AFB successful; and if so, how and why? In answering this question, hopefully, the work also illuminates how success is defined and identifies some of the strategies adopted to produce a successful conversion.

Joyner, David Lee. "FINANCIAL IMPACTS OF MILITARY BASE CLOSURES ON LOCAL COMMUNITY PROPERTY VALUES." NSUWorks, 2012. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/hsbe_etd/51.

Abstract:
The dissertation explores the financial ramifications of US military base closure on local community real estate property values. The dissertation examines an area that has not received sufficient research. Previous works on military base closure by Bradshaw, Kroll, Corley, Kirshenbaum and Harlan (1995); Dardia, McCarty, Malkin, and Vernez, (1996); Hooker and Knetter (2001) and Krizan (1998) examine more generalized economic factors such as employment and macroeconomic activity. More recent published dissertation work by authors Hall (1998) and Poppert (2002) have provided interesting explanatory hypotheses to assist municipal and state leaders in crafting working plans to assist communities where base closure occurs. This dissertation intends to look into the effects on real estate property values in the wake of military base closures. The dissertation expands the study of base closure effects into a relatively new area on the fluctuation of real estate property values. An enhanced understanding of how military base closures affect real estate values will have implications for real estate investors, developers, city and county government planners, and budget directors from local school districts to state government.

Abstract:
Application of economic base analysis at a multi-level scale illustrates the usefulness of this approach to tracking and measuring the economic flows and linkages between three defined areas. A census survey of employers in six rural communities of the White Mountain Region of Arizona is used to collect employment and sales data at a high level of specificity. These data serve as the basis for bifurcation of basic and nonbasic components necessary for estimating the multiplier. Measurement of these data determine the extent of economic dependence and spatial interaction which exist between communities, and between the region and the outside world. In addition, the study refines established procedures and applies a full range of adjustments to primary and secondary data sources to produce highly refined multipliers for the region and each community.

Abstract:
This study is about the memories of the participants of Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) in a parish area in Santo André. The aim of this work is to understand the dialectical relationship between social life and the subjectivity of the persons who narrate their recollections. In order to capture the totality of life experiences from childhood until the present time (as they are rebuilt in the individual memorial narrative), the method employed is Oral History of Life. Narrators travel through their memories and unite them to reflections, critical evaluations, explanations and interpretations which tend to form a totalizing sense of life. Aspects as faith, political and social commitments, social relations and spaces, human developments, responses when faced with difficulties, values, work and the relationship with time and personal testimonies have all emerged from the recollections here gathered. The researcher builds some reflections with the narrators about the elements which arise from their narrated memories, resorting to authors such as Ecléa Bosi, Maurice Halbwachs, Karl Marx, István Mészáros, José Moura G. Filho, Guimarães Rosa, liberation theologists and others. This study is based on four individuals and their life histories and was enriched by observations in several different spaces and by the close personal relationship with many other militants of groups and movements related to the BECs, particularly in the region of ABC.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses major U.S. military bases closed by the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission since 1988. The study focuses on geographic patterns of pre-existing versus BRAC bases, statistical attributes, environmental restoration, and reuse of bases. Comparative case studies supplement the analysis, highlighting rural versus urban location, success versus failure, politics, conflict, and local versus national goals. Thesis findings are that: 92 bases closed versus 97 commonly published; a fairly even national closure pattern occurred, indicating Commission efforts to achieve equity, except for three closure clusters indicating efforts to consolidate functions in some regions and leave others; base reuse, while commonly perceived negatively, has been positive in most cases; the BRAC process is becoming more efficient, such that allowed years between BRAC closure decisions and base closures should be reduced from six to three years to benefit both communities and the Defense Department.

It is urgent prevail for pastoral models that are able to establish a close relationship with the new religious standards set by society. In effect, we are witnessing the affirmation of religious experiences, set by the traces of modernity, who preach the centrality of subjective and private sphere of religion. As a result, experiments such as Ecclesial Base Communities - CEBs for take hold in view of the collective and social character of religion, come into crisis. In this sense, this work is premised analyze the current situation of CEBs in Brazil, as suggested by the subtitle of our work, the process of the rise, decline and reinvention, and as a source of analysis a case study. Our theoretical option is for the concept of religious modernity, as worked out by Danièle Hervieu-Léger. As a research source, use of bibliographic production, arising from the fields of Sciences of Religions, Sociology, Anthropology and Theology. Thus, authors such as Faustino Teixeira, Leonardo Boff, José Comblin, among others, were of fundamental importance to the extent allowed us to better understand the elements that sustain and inspire the journey of CEBs. In analyzing the results of the field, the anthropological literature as Vagner Gonçalves, Roberto C. de Oliveira, among others, helped us to understand and cut the lines of our interviewees to collaborate with what was our interest in this study. As a result of research conducted in São Benedito community, city of Santa Rita/PB, obtained from the literature and the field itself some answers to the questions that inspired the construction of this work: there is still place for the CEBs in the current religious dynamics? Were they, in fact, the CEBs living a moment of reflux? Our results showed that the maintenance of CEBs in the Catholic religious scene, much depends on your own ability to renew themselves and interact with new social and religious demands.

Abstract:
This study examines community involvement in major U.S. military base closures and realignments from 1988 to 2001. There were four waves of base closures during this time. They were in 1988, 1991, 1993, and 1995. Community involvement became an important criterion in the reuse decisions for the closed bases. The methods used in this study are the literature review, a questionnaire with analysis and three case studies. The literature review looks at the subject of community involvement in general and community involvement in connection with closed military bases. The questionnaire was sent to 107 closed bases with fifty one base representatives responding. The contents of the completed questionnaires were analyzed for community involvement both during the base closure phase and the reuse phase. There are three analyses based on community involvement plus a description of the involvement techniques used. The first analysis uses the Community Involvement Analysis. The results of this analysis were as follows. Community satisfaction depended upon the community elements. In the next analysis, the Representation Analysis, community satisfaction depended upon the amount of representation and time of representation. The regression analysis also showed that amount of representation and time of representation to be optimum. The third analysis, the Involvement Analysis uses the type and amount of community involvement, the amount of representation and the time for representation for the analysis. The results were that the best model was the type and amount of community involvement and amount of representation. In addition, participation methods employed by the base redevelopment agencies were described. Strategic planning was the overall method of community involvement used and multiple involvement methods were used in that framework. Finally, three bases were identified in the questionnaire as candidates for further study and discussed in the study. They were Naval Air Station Cecil Field in Jacksonville, Florida, Glenview Naval Air Station in Glenview, Illinois and Bayonne Military Ocean Terminal in Bayonne, New Jersey. The study of these bases provided more information on the base closure process.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis aims to contribute to the development of an emerging theory of community-based tourism (CBT), defining it as community-driven governance (CDG) and as social entrepreneurship, both analyzed as dimensions of community agency (CA). The research focuses on indigenous communities whose traditional governance (called uses and customs) is directly linked to tourism community-based enterprises (CBEs). A theoretical sample of three indigenous communities is analyzed; despite each case have developed a CBT model, they have followed different processes. This study applied the grounded theory; consequently, this is an inductive and qualitative research, based on constant comparisons. The data was collected through 48 in-depth interviews in four stages, during the 2011-2017 period. The results indicate that in a context of indigenous CBT, there is a strong link between the CDG and the CBE, and that the evolution of both dimensions directly affects the local CBT model.

Abstract:

The current state of community college student engagement literature is that it is rich with journal articles and research but limited on tools with which to measure the construct of engagement. The Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE), a widely cited survey of community college student engagement, is one way to measure engagement, though this instrument has come under scrutiny for the validity of its benchmarks, its lack of emphasis on cultural considerations, and its length. The present study sought to create and validate a new survey of community college student engagement that would take less than 10 minutes to complete and drew on the most current body of literature on college student engagement. A second aim of this study was to understand community college student engagement by interpreting the results of the instrument created, the Brief Assessment of Student Engagement (BASE), and comparing it to other research on student engagement. The BASE was created and revised based on a literature review, rounds of interviews with students, feedback from higher education administrators and faculty, and a pilot administration. The BASE was then administered to a randomly selected group of students. Several significant, though weak to moderate, relationships were found between questions on the BASE and items from the CCSSE. Significant differences between scores based on age of participants was found, with those participants aged 30-35 scoring higher than those aged 18-24. A significant though weak relationship was also found between score on the BASE and GPA. Implications are discussed.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to examine the social function of music in the BECs (Basic Ecclesial Communities), which has biblical roots and is present in the current days. The first part approaches the social function of music in the Bible until the current days with a brief narrative of the history of western music. The second part studies the music in the BECs and the Liberation Theology as an important part of the musical context, where the ideals of the Liberation Theology are disclosed by the music, i.e., music becomes the living voice of the Liberation Theology. It is also an analysis of the music plays and other musical styles performed in other Christian churches. The third part analyzes the impact of the liberation music played in the BECs, where the musical culture has produced a concrete political activism, inspiring their members to hold public offices in order to formalize public polices for the lower classes. The study reports the current status of theses communities as well as the liberation music. It figures the future of the musical movement and its contribution to a new fair and egalitarian society.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2002.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 158-164).
This dissertation is about opportunities in rural development. Often we think of development as a function of location. In the pursuit of economic development, analysts and practitioners tend to consider the advantages--economic, geographic, and institutional--of one location over another. Rural areas often weigh in toward the bottom of such analyses because they enjoy few of the traditional, i.e., location-dependent, resources for development. The general question underlying this dissertation is: How do rural communities find opportunities for economic development without the traditional resources to serve as stimuli? Local responses to air force bases closures during the 1990s are examined, first, through a comparative analysis between the groups of six rural and 26 metropolitan host communities of closed bases and, second, through case studies of four host communities--three rural and one metropolitan. Principle findings included:
(cont.) *Surprisingly, the rural host communities achieved success in base redevelopment comparable to metropolitan host communities despite significant economic, geographic, and institutional gaps between the two groups in the study. *Residents mobilized in response to base-closure crises in every community. Through participation in base reuse planning activities, residents grew knowledgeable in base-related issues that, ultimately, aided redevelopment and compensated for the lack of more formal local development expertise. *Host communities capitalized upon much-needed development assets they derived from federal resources--grants, technical assistance, and base property. *By the end of the study period, the rural host communities, in particular, had improved their capacity to plan and manage future development through the accumulation and capitalization of assets derived from local and federal resources in base redevelopment.
by Lois A. McMaster, Karen Jean. "An analysis of the "our gang" syndrome on a military base community and implications for educational leaders." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/186714.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to determine from a sample of 800 military personnel from a Southwestern military base whether there is a significant difference regarding attitudes toward gangs by military personnel living on and off base and whether these attitudes differed based on rank, age, gender, ethnicity, location of residence, or number and age of children. As a result of the data analysis, relevant implications were identified, providing educational and military leaders with information to encourage the establishment of gang-resistant communities. The methodology for this comparative analysis is descriptive/survey in nature. A detailed literature review presented information on theories about gang delinquency, definitions of gangs, gang prevention strategies, and gangs in one Southwestern state. The results of the analysis of data indicated that there are few significant statistical differences in how military personnel living on and off base responded to survey questions. The review of literature suggested that media impact is the overarching influence on community perceptions regardless of whether the community is large or small, structured or unstructured. Recommendations for further research include a replication of this study involving other military bases in the United States, a study which would analyze the perceptions of children of military personnel living on and off base toward gangs, research which would assess the impact of the media on individuals' perceptions of gangs in different communities, procedures to define social disorganization and identify specific factors in communities that would help to categorize a community as organized or disorganized, and a study conducted in a school which would identify on and off base military dependents and non-military dependents to determine whether association with the military affects perceptions and/or gang membership.

Abstract:
The present work describes the process by which the Catholic Church turns its attention to society and commits itself to the poorest. This commitment helped organize the popular segments, while at the same time, it allowed a reflection on the action of the Catholic Church itself. This reflection has changed the political praxis of religious and lay people who came to see the Church as a privileged instrument of social and political change, since it is an institution present in every corner shaping the population in general. I stress also, the role of popular segments, which not only suffer the action of the Church, but exert back on it a critical role, capable of influencing sectors of the Catholic Church, causing them to review positions and define actions more relevant to the reality of the popular segments. In this work, I analyze the trajectory of the Catholic Church in Brazil, when, gradually, some segments of its hierarchy take part in the struggles of the people, revealing the processes of domination and submission in place, forcing an official position of the Church that ultimately impacts Vatican II. Afterwards, the Church, historically, becomes committed to the poor--it is the Church of the poor, as well defines the liberation theology. This commitment leads to the organization of the Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs). These communities become more expressive politically, primarily, from the years of military dictatorship. This peculiarity makes some scholars believe that the political presence of the CEBs is a consequence of the closure of formal political spaces such as unions and political parties. The thesis that I defend, based on studies of the Diocese of CrateÃs, is that the BECs are meeting spaces that are transformed into spaces of social and political activities that the Church has taken control of since the 1950s. CrateÃs is a clear demonstration that communities are gathering spaces and, therefore, political spaces of active and critical speech in a church that stands open to talking to the people, encouraging them to participate in the actions defined in the communities. BECs are, as a result, spaces of political education that still reverberate in the action of popular strata. The methodology used was based on direct contact with the workers who participated in BECs with the 9 Church, priests, nuns, pastoral workers, union members and coordinators, through individual and group interviews, analysis of documents and books, participation in meetings and visits to some institutions created through the action of BEC members.

Abstract:
Uluru is the more famous of the two namesake inselbergs found in Uluru Kata-Tjuta National Park (UKTNP). Uluru is roughly 10 km around its base, stands nearly 350 m tall, and can cast a shadow more than a kilometre long during the early morning and late afternoon hours. Additionally, there are many areas near the base of Uluru that receive nearly continuous shade throughout the day, which may also mean that these places could be buffered against extreme temperatures. This study investigated Uluru's influence on the climate at various distances from its base, and simultaneously assessed if the structure of the reptile community was related to the observed climatic variation. We used iButton data loggers to record the temperature and relative humidity at 26 sample locations surrounding Uluru. We used ArcGIS to map the path of Uluru's shadow and to determine when and how long data loggers recorded in and out of Uluru's shading influence. We found that the temperature and relative humidity were strongly influenced by Uluru's shadow, and that reptile assemblages were strongly correlated with the amount of time a sampled site was influenced by Uluru's shadow.

Abstract:
The initial 72 hours after a large-scale crisis are critical in terms of preserving life and property, and the private sector and its critical infrastructure are often called upon to assist government organizations in such events. However, little research explores the unique circumstances surrounding the relationship between public-private partnerships and community resilience in strategic communities including military installations and ports. Using Bryson, Crosby, and Stone's conceptualization of cross-sector collaboration, the purpose of this grounded theory study was to develop a theory of private sector engagement and collaboration with military base and port community leaders in response to large scale crises. Data were collected through interviews with 43 public, private, and military sector leaders in six strategic communities of the East, Gulf, and West coasts. Data from ReadyCommunities Partnership symposia summaries were also considered. Data were coded and analyzed using Eisenhardt's grounded theory procedures. Findings resulted in the identification of emergent themes from which the mutual mission theory emerged. This theory acknowledges the key elements of tension between private sector incentives to collaborate and the undercurrent of sector-silo bias. Further, the findings of this study support collaboration through policy with incentives to institutionalize extraordinary community-based mutual missions while overcoming sector-silo bias. Positive social change may be achieved through utilization of the applied mutual mission theory by military base and port community leaders in order to better leverage private sector engagement in response to national crises.

The study was carried out in the municipality of Nova Olinda, located in the interior of Ceará, which has an estimated population of 15,310 inhabitants. The city encompasses the experience of the Casa Grande Foundation, a management school that works with the education of youth and children. The NGO was responsible for all training and administration of community tourism in the municipality. In this sense, this research has as central focus the activities of the foundation and the development provided by the projects and programs articulated by the institution. As a theoretical contribution, theories were used referring to the concepts of Macromarketing, Community Tourism and Distributive Justice in Marketing Systems. Regarding the methodological procedures, a qualitative approach was used, having as main technique the semi-structured interview, supported by participant observation. A total of 23 interviews were conducted with managers of the Casa Grande Foundation, residents directly involved in the activities of the NGO, residents who had no connection with the institution and a tourist. The results of the study point out that a well-planned tourism model that considers stakeholders and which is based on values such as community living, cooperation and recognition of the cultural and natural space of the environment, is capable of bringing development to the region And to establish just exchanges with those who dwell in that place. The discussion of the issue of distributive justice within a marketing system, and the use of a concrete management experience that absorbs the ideals of fairer exchanges, as well as the approach of the marketing vision in its macro sense, in an optics that sees the Tourism through residents, are the main contributions of this study.
The environmental friendly tourism, understood within this project as a segment or category of tourism, and the Tourism of Community Base (also known as TBC), a proposal of organizing its practice, can be seen as response, whether intentional or not, of subjects like sustainable development, nature preservation, inclusion and reduction of poverty being internalized. Even though the community participation in the tourism, specially the sort done at conserved natural environments, is not really recent, the management of the initiatives that centralize the local agents as main characters of the process of stimulating, of planning and of the touristic practice has been being outlined only over the last two decades in the Country. The promoting of the community experiences in tourism has allowed income generation and the overcoming poverty through the means of this activity, at the same time it also includes the demands regarding the conserving of the local environment. The community of Forte Velho, Santa Rita-PB, gathers attractions that would raise the debate regarding the touristic practice at that area, articulating measures for community insertion within this proposal. This project has as general objective to diagnose the touristic activities done at the Forte Velho community and it's surrounding area – a region inserted at the estuary of the Paraíba River – and verify the perspective of including proposals related to the environmental friendly tourism and the Tourism of Community Base in this area. Based on a qualitative approach, interviews were done with eight community residents, those were selected by a criteria of accessibility, with distinct profiles, with the goal of understanding the local reality from land, social, cultural, environmental and economic matters. After that, the community was invited to take part in workshops focused on participation diagnosys of tourism in the studied area as per oriented by Salvati (2003) and of the International Labor Organization - ILO (2011), which allowed to explain how the tourism was seen through the light of that sample: which was the main deficiencies and benefits generated, and also make it possible the recording of the local touristic offer through inventory. Even though it includes the conflicts and frail points present within the community, from the obtained results, the feasibility and its possibility of the TBC can be seen. In order for it to come true, however, some reservations and suggestions are presented to the residents interested in articulating the measures which bring the community base and the tourism that already takes part in the area closer.

Community Based tourism (CBT) is a quite recent topic in scientific studies, that has been receiving emphasis for the last ten years, considering that, in the whole world, there has been a tendency to search for a locally based tourism, with respect towards the natural environment and to the local cultures. CBT, that follows the environmental perspective, with the correct and balanced development and has as main characteristic the inclusion and the local communities role, bringing benefits to the locations, appears as a counterpoint to the mass and globalized tourism. In Brazil, the tourism in the northeast coast has been historically developed as a mass and exclusive way, with the presence of big touristic enterprises, often international, that modify locations where they are installed, generating identity and territory losses. In reaction to this conventional touristic model, which is often encouraged by the public policies, some local communities have organized themselves to undertake the CBT, usually in an associative way, generating different touristic territories, where the tourism is complementary to the traditional activities and seeks to provide positive experiences to the local communities and visitors. This research aims to analyze how the installation process and the CBT development occurs in coast regions in Brazilian Northeast. For this purpose, three CBT initiatives have been chosen for study, also regarding their relations and interfaces with the locations environmental dynamic: the Cooperativa Náutica Ambiental (Nautical Environmental Bussiness cooperation), in Tamandaré, South Coast of Pernambuco; the Associação dos condutores do Turismo de Observação do Peixe-Boi Marinho (Manatee Observation Tourism Conductors Association), in Porto de Pedras, North Coast of Alagoas; and the Associação de Turismo de Meio Ambiente e Cultura (Environment and Culture Tourism Association), in Ponta Grossa’s Beach, in Icapuí, East Coast of Ceará. This research is exploratory and is characterized as qualitative, with interdisciplinary vision, since it treats the multiple dimensions of the processes and results of CBT, in a dialectical approach, by analyzing historical and social contexts. To attend the objective, bibliographical and website researchs have been realized along with visits to the three locations, in which have been realized: observations, photographic reports, touristic services experiences offered by the communities, semistructured interviews with the presidents of the associations and business cooperations and with the representatives in the municipal tourism departments, workshops with the associated and cooperated, besides informal conversations with various social actors that are part of the local reality, directly or indirectly related to tourism. Using the content analysis methodology, analyses have been done about practices in the three initiatives, from the establishment of relations between sustainable parameters and CBT principles. The CBT initiatives can appear from an environmental conflict or entrepreneurship. Sometimes, they start because of a reason itself, sometimes with encouragement and support of partner organizations; sometimes being more isolated and self-sufficient or keep in dialogue with the conventional tourism. Given that the implementation and development processes of CBT experience different territorial and historical contexts, with different social, economical, cultural, ecological, political and touristic vocations realities, also the results are different, presenting various levels of sustainability. It is noted that CBT has been an alternative to the sustainable local development, minimizing threats and identity and territory losses, and, at the same time, generating local income, culture appreciation and local identity and environmental conservation.

Abstract:
Observamos as características dessa incidência no fenômeno religioso analisado a prática pastoral.
The Council of Vatican II, conducted between the years 1962 and 1965, guided the renovation of pastoral practices of the Church. Father José Edwaldo Gomes became responsible for the Parish of Casa Forte, in the city of Recife in 1970 and began to implant the new orientations. His activities were situated in two very distinctive moments: in the external context of the Church and national politics, the military submerged Brasil in a stern dictatorship in the years 1964 1985. In the internal context, we select the period from 1985 to 1990, which coves the first five years after the substitution of Dom Helder Camara as the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife. The events of these two periods reflect the activity of the Parish of Casa Forte. We observe the characteristics of the events in the religious phenomena analyzed the pastoral activities. Using the new orientations developed during Vatican II, Father Edwaldo sought to implement a mentality more participative in the planning and execution of pastoral activities which became ever more diverse. Based on the somewhat limited documentation available and recorded interviews, we analyze the tendencies and ecclesiastical movements of the entire period studied (1970 - 1990), utilizing concepts formulated by researchers in the sciences of religion and related topics

Knowledge Base Population (KBP) is an important and challenging task specially when it has to be done automatically. The objective of KBP task is to make a collection of facts of the world. A Knowledge Base (KB) contains different entities, relationships among them and various properties of the entities. Relation extraction (RE) between a pair of entity mentions from text plays a vital role in KBP task. RE is also a challenging task specially for open domain relations. Generally, relations are extracted based on the lexical and syntactical information at the sentence level. However, global information about known entities has not been explored yet for RE task. We propose to extract a graph of entities from the overall corpus and to compute features on this graph that are able to capture some evidence of holding relationships between a pair of entities. In order to evaluate the relevance of the proposed features, we tested them on a task of relation validation which examines the correctness of relations that are extracted by different RE systems. Experimental results show that the proposed features lead to outperforming the state-of-the-art system

Abstract:
Background: Community acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a high incidence disease resulting in about 260,000 hospital admissions per year in Germany, more than myocardial infarction or stroke. Worldwide, CAP is the most frequent infectious disease with high lethality ranging from 1.2 % in those 20–29 years old to over 10 % in patients older than 70 years, even in industrial nations. CAP poses numerous medical challenges, which the PROGRESS (Pneumonia Research Network on Genetic Resistance and Susceptibility for the Evolution of Severe Sepsis) network aims to tackle: Operationalization of disease severity throughout the course of disease, outcome prediction for hospitalized patients and prediction of transitions from uncomplicated CAP to severe CAP, and finally, to CAP with sepsis and organ failure as a life-threatening condition. It is a major aim of PROGRESS to understand and predict patient heterogeneity regarding outcome in the hospital and to develop novel treatment concepts. Methods: PROGRESS was designed as a clinical, observational, multi-center study of patients with CAP requiring hospitalization. More than 1600 patients selected for low burden of co-morbidities have been enrolled, aiming at a total of 3000. Course of disease, along with therapy, was closely monitored by daily assessments and long-term follow-up. Daily blood samples allow in depth molecular-genetic characterization of patients. We established a well-organized workflow for sample logistics and a comprehensive data management system to collect and manage data from more than 50 study centers in Germany and Austria. Samples are stored in a central biobank and clinical data are stored in a central data base which also integrates all data from molecular assessments. Discussion: With the PROGRESS study, we established a comprehensive data base of high quality clinical and molecular data allowing investigation of pressing research questions regarding CAP. In-depth molecular characterization will contribute to the discovery of disease mechanisms and establishment of diagnostic and predictive biomarkers. A strength of PROGRESS is the focus on younger patients with low burden of co-morbidities, allowing a more direct look at host biology with less confounding. As a resulting limitation, insights from PROGRESS will require validation in representative patient cohorts to assess clinical utility. Trial registration: The PROGRESS study was retrospectively registered on May 24th, 2016 with ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT02782013

Abstract:
A network is a set of nodes that are linked together by a set of edges. Networks can represent any set of objects that have relations among themselves. Communities are sets of nodes that are related in an important way, probably sharing common properties and/or playing similar roles within a network. When network analysis is applied to study the livestock movement patterns, the epidemiological units of interest (farm premises, counties, states, countries, etc.) are represented as nodes, and animal movements between the nodes are represented as the edges of a network. Unraveling a network structure, and hence the trade preferences and pathways, could be very useful to a researcher or a decision-maker. We implemented a community detection algorithm to find livestock communities that is consistent with the definition of a livestock production zone, assuming that a community is a group of farm premises in which an animal is more likely to stay during its life time than expected by chance. We applied this algorithm to the network of within animal movements made inside the State of Mato Grosso, for the year of 2007. This database holds information about 87,899 premises and 521,431 movements throughout the year, totalizing 15,844,779 animals moved. The community detection algorithm achieved a network partition that shows a clear geographical and commercial pattern, two crucial features to preventive veterinary medicine applications, and also has a meaningful interpretation in trade networks where links emerge from the choice of trader nodes.

Abstract:

In the city of Ponta Grossa-PR., Diocesan seat, there was the embodiment of the Pastoral Plan for the 1978/1979 biennium, aimed at the formation of Basic Ecclesial Communities, which undertook, with the evangelization liberating and transformative social structures. However, when oral narratives articulate individuals who experienced the historical period, in various social settings of the diocese, we measurethe constraints of the diocesan bishop with regard to the social movements of the church in relation to the participation of church members on issues of local politics , and the preferential option for the poor. From this discussion, we conclude that the materialization of this pastoral plan was effective, more as an instrument of legitimation of the power of the religious specialist, than to the Catholic church linked to social movements.

Abstract:
This study had as general objective to analyze some experiences of community base tourism in the Metropolitan Region of Manaus, taking into consideration the socio-spatial aspects. It had as specific objectives to contextualize, from the experiences of Brazil and Latin America, besides the experiences of community base tourism in the Amazon, particularly in the Metropolitan Region of Manaus; and to suggest mechanisms that collaborate to the implementation of the public policies concerning to the community base tourism as an alternative to the economic and social development in the Amazon Region. For its implementation, they were made literature surveys on secondary sources, a field research and a photographic record. The individuals involved in the research were fifteen traditional communities present in some of the eight municipalities of the Metropolitan Region of Manaus (Careiro da Várzea, Iranduba, Itacoatiara, Manacapuru, Manaus, New Airão, Presidente Figueiredo and Rio Preto da Eva). The results showed, among other aspects, that most of them are in the rural area inside an area of preservation and on land too; it is relevant to mention that the conquest of the land was given for possession. During the survey, as a conclusion, we could verify that most communities are located in Manaus and Iranduba; however with few experiences within the Metropolitan Region of Manaus which go for a proposal of community base tourism. In addition, when they are compared to other experiences in Latin America and other regions of Brazil, they appear very disjointed. This way, we suggest as actions to the effectuation of the modality of community base tourism in the Amazon Region that the public policies integrated between the different spheres of the government, adopting more participatory attitudes regarding to traditional communities which wish to work with this social and economic activity, through programs and projects that value primarily for the participation of the communities during the planning of this activity.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVES: To assess the prospective associations of mood disorders, religiosity and suicidality in a community sample of young adults. METHODS: Prospective population-based cohort study. Young adults (18-24 years old) were recruited and followed-up five years later. Suicidality, mood and anxiety disorders were assessed using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Substance use disorders were assessed using the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test. Religiosity were assessed at baseline and grouped according to religious affiliation and according to attendance frequency. RESULTS: The sample included 1560 young adults at baseline, with 1244 reassessed at follow-up (80.6%). Depressive episodes, both current and past had a significant impact on suicidality. Previous manic episodes, however, were less consistently associated with suicidality. No association of religiosity with suicidality was found in the two waves of the research. This effect is maintained in all religious affiliations, even when subdivided the analysis according to the frequency of attendance in religious service. CONCLUSIONS: Depressive episodes have an independent and robust effect on prospective suicidality. The effect of manic episodes, on the other hand, was dependent on the analysis and deserves further exploration. Although there is prior general evidence suggesting a protective role of religiosity on suicidality, these were not confirmed in this specific sample of young adults.

This thesis seeks to investigate the influence of Theology of Liberation and experiences of life that took place in some Basic Ecclesial Communities by social actors in the northern region of Sao Leopoldo city, including Fr Orestes Joao Stragliotto, who is our major source for the research conducted due to his writings and interviews from some social actors that participated in social mobilizations. These writings and interviews permeate our analysis around our objectives and hypothesis raised. Few people would disagree that Theology of Liberation has been important in – and outside – the Catholic structure in the recent history of Brazil. However, we do not find many case studies in the Social Sciences regarding effective actions as results from theological liberation practices. This research presents some practical results of a case study of Theology of Liberation from the social praxis of Fr Orestes Joao Stragliotto and of social actors by means of the method suggested in this theology, that is, See, Judge and Act. As a result, we see that the social practice has resulted the formation of social movements and popular mobilizations in the northern region of Sao Leopoldo. We also see that this practice took place in the 1980s and 1990s in the Parish Santo Inacio’s Basic Ecclesial Communities, which has affected the way people understood the relationship between the church, politics and life, once these practices have changed the local reality of the social actor and their vividness in the political institutionality.

Analyze the dynamic tourism and its potential for tourism development is preliminary to the planning of tourism in a region action, especially for the tourism develops in a responsible manner while minimizing impacts to the environment and culture of indigenous communities. For purposes of analysis, literature searches were conducted primarily about the concepts that concern research. Shortly after empirical research with qualitative and quantitative basis were conducted from January 2014 to October 2014 in Barra do Rio Mamanguape community, with the help of tools like questionnaires and interviews with internal and external stakeholders of the local tourism development. Although surveys were conducted onsite for identification of in loco tourism and documentary research in order to recognize the tourist flows in the region. From the data analysis it was found the potential for participatory community building community-based ecotourism as regards the tourism potential, but for the development of fact, there is still much to be articulated not only by the interest of the community site, but the support from government to subsidize its construction. Although there is potential for its development, it is necessary a sharper insight into their future development, since the current impasse occurs from the sanction of the management plan for the conservation unit community is located, because through this rules for the use of territories which could draw the attention of private sector large for construction of tourism in the region, which would extinguish the time of the community in developing tourism in the region as a community will be dictated. However, protrudes through this research the importance of articulating the community, with government and non-government planning of participatory tourism agencies, preceding the establishment of the private tourism sector in the region.
