We use cross sectional data from the World Bank enterprise surveys gathered in 2007 in South Africa’s four cities (Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth) to assess the impact of business related crimes on firm performance proxied using firm sales. Using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Tobit model, we find that crime in the form of theft, robbery, arson and vandalism has a negative effect on sales and hence firm performance. Background. Declining levels of physical activity coupled with the rising incidence of childhood obesity in developing countries are of health concern. Current daily recommendations for preadolescent children are to accumulate 60 min of moderate physical activity per day. In South Africa, physical education forms part of the life skills curriculum, but children have limited school time to engage in physical activity. Social, economic and health care needs of elderly black persons in Port Elizabeth and areas in its immediate vicinity are investigated. Conclusions are drawn from a sample study of 301 elderly people.
