Abstract:
An extensive research programme has been carried out on advanced treatment of secondary effluents discharged by centralized activated sludge treatment plants fed on mixed textile/domestic effluents in order to produce a final effluent suitable for reuse in the textile factories. Activated carbon adsorption or membrane filtration (ranging from microfiltration to reverse osmosis) have been investigated at pilot plant scale in order to determine the most economical and performing advanced treatment. The increase in concentration of refractory pollutants and of salts discharged in the final effluents because of water recycling within the textile processes have been evaluated by relevant mass balances. A techno-economical analysis on the proposed treatment is also presented.

Full text
Abstract:
Single PCB congeners were determined in dated sediment cores taken from the three greatest Italian lakes. The PCB profile is fairly constant with time in the three lakes and similar to that of a mixture of Aroclor 1254 and 1260 (35 : 65). Qualitative and quantitative results are consistent with the amounts of Aroclor sold, showing a general trend towards less in recent sediments than in the 1970s. However, this decrease was sharper in Lakes Maggiore and Como, which in the past had PCB concentration peaks of 197 ng g-1 and 822 ng g-1, repectively, than in Lake Garda (peak 38 ng g-1). There is disequilibrium between the top sediment layer and the water column due to freshly settled algae, which can adsorb PCBs to a greater extent than can abiotic particulate matter. A comparison of PCB loads in rain and in sediment shows that there are still local sources of contamination in Lake Como. The net flux of less chlorinated PCBs from Lake Maggiore to the atmosphere indicates that this waterbody can be a source of pollution for the surrounding area.

Full text
Abstract:
We present an assessment of climate change impact on the hydrology of the Lago di Como lake catchment of Italy. On one side, the lake provides water for irrigation of the Po valley during summer, and on the other side its regulation is crucial to prevent flood risk, especially in fall and winter. The dynamics of lake Como are linked to the complex cryospheric hydrology of its Alpine contributing catchment, which is in turn expected to change radically under prospective global warming. The Poli-Hydro model is used here to simulate the cryospheric processes affecting the hydrology of this high-altitude catchment. We demonstrated the model’s accuracy against historical hydrological observations, available during 2002–2018. We then used four Representative Concentration Pathways scenarios, provided by three Global Circulation Models under the AR6 of IPCC, to project potential climate change until 2100. We thereby derived daily series of rainfall and temperature, to be used as inputs for hydrological simulations. The climate projections here highlight a substantial increase in temperature at the end of the century, between +0.61° and +5.96°, which would lead to a decrease in the total ice volume in the catchment, by −50% to −77%. Moreover, there would be a decrease in the contribution of snow melt to the annual lake inflow, and an increase in ice melt under the worst-case scenarios. Overall, the annual Lake inflows would increase during autumn and winter and would decrease in summer. Our study may provide a tool to help policy makers to henceforth evaluate adaptation strategies in the area.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract. Subsidence-related vertical ground deformation due to natural and anthropogenic factors may lead to considerable damages to structures and infrastructures, and may increase the occurrence probability of consequential events, such as floods, especially on sea and lake shores. Como city, placed in the north of Italy, adjacent to Como Lake, is subjected to significant subsidence phenomenon, which has been monitored by geodetic levelling networks. In this work the historical geodetic levelling measurements and satellite-based Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data archive are integrated to assess the accuracy of Atmospheric Delay and Deformation Rate estimations obtained through Persistent Scatter Interferometry (PSI) techniques. Tree levelling measurement datasets acquired in 1990, 1997 and 2004 are used in order to obtain the precise deformation rate at the benchmarks for two periods of 1990–1997 and 1997–2004. For multi-temporal InSAR analysis, 106 SAR images (1992–2004) and 41 SAR images (1992–2004) in Ascending Track orbit from ERS-1/2 missions are used in this study. The assessment is performed through a statistical comparison between two sets of vertical land deformation rates obtained by integrated methods. The results of the validation represented a good consistency between deformation rates derived by both techniques. Also, this study has revealed the potential of SAR images acquired in gyro-less mode by ERS-2 mission (2001–2004) in terms of the estimation of ground deformation.

Abstract:
The paper analyses the use and consumption that a sample of Asian migrants living in Italy make of television, with the aim of knowing the potential of this media as a tool for social integration. For this, we have worked through a semi-structured interview, applied to 60 people from China, the Philippines and Sri Lanka, resident in the city of Messina. The results of the research indicate that the people participating in the study take advantage of certain contents and formats provided by television to reinforce language learning and knowledge of Italian society (essential elements within integration processes). We therefore conclude that television has the potential to be a good resource for social integration, without this obviating the need not to carry out simplistic and superficial analysis that ignore the multidimensional and multidirectional nature of the process of the integration.

Abstract:
Ayrıca, elde edilen sonuçlar kadın ve erkek göçmenlerin göç etmeye nasıl karar verdikleri, yol hikâyeleri, onlar için ailenin ne olduğu ve ne olması gerektiği, bu gerekliliklerin göç ortamında nasıl değiştiğine -değişmemesi gerektiğine- dair konularda toplumsal cinsiyet rollerinin ne kadar belirleyici olduğunu gösteriyor.ABSTRACT IN ENGLISHMigration from Turkey to Italy and Family Relationships among MigrantsThis article presents the results of a qualitative study based on the data obtained from semi-structured interviews with 38 Turkish and Kurdish immigrants living in Northern Italy. The main aim of the study is to understand the effects of migration on marital relationships and to examine how migrants have arranged their family lives through their migration experience. The family members were interviewed separately as long as possible to enable women to express themselves more easily. The results indicate that while in other European countries –where the recruitment of Turkish workers was arranged through bilateral intergovernmental agreements– the Turkish migration is a solid phenomenon, Italy has experienced large–scale Turkish migration in the relatively recent past. Furthermore, the research results indicate that the migration decision is quite rarely a family decision, whereas the traditional family gender relationships shape all migration phases: i.e. decision for when to move; who to move; and how long to stay abroad are often determined by men. However, the migration experience shapes significantly the family experiences of both men and women migrants.

Palabras clave: Bimilenario de Augusto, Roma antigua, fascismo, Falange, Franco, P. They had ties with the Mussolinian leaders and intellectuals, and one of the recurring themes in their propaganda was the fraternity between Italy and Spain which they dated back to a common, ancient Roman and Catholic past. In the first years of Franco’s new regime this classicist ideology, in particular the link with Augustus and ancient imperial Rome, contributed to the building of a new national identity, based on a glorious past and conducted by a new charismatic leader.Key words: Bimillenary of Augustus, ancient Rome, fascism, Falange, Franco, P. Abstract:
On November 2014, the Municipality of Grandate, near Lake Como, had to deal with a great emergency that was caused by the flooding of factory undergrounds. The authors realized a hydrogeological study to understand the causes of groundwater flooding and to prepare a pre-feasibility study concerning possible actions for groundwater control. The hydrogeological structure is rather complex and required time-consuming reconstruction of the conceptual site model. A transient numerical model was developed to analyse the system behaviour in different scenarios. The flow model was calibrated in a steady and unsteady-state using the automatic calibration code Model-Independent Parameter Estimation (PEST). The study demonstrated that the reason for floods was mainly due to the concurrence of three causes: (1) the hydrogeological structure of the area was recognized as a stagnation zone, (2) groundwater rising, and (3) extremely heavy rainfall in 2014. Through the PEST RandPar function, 100 random rainfall scenarios were generated starting from rainfall data for the last 20 years. The model was used to run 100 1-year long simulations considering the probability distribution of recharge related to the 100 randomly generated rainfall scenarios. Through collecting the piezometric heads that resulted from the simulations, monthly probability curves of groundwater exceeding a threshold level were obtained. The results provided an occurrence probability of groundwater level exceeding the underground structures level between 12% and 15%.

Abstract:
Abstract. This paper aims at presenting the recording and modelling work developed in the framework of restoration and conservation activities for the Basilica di San Giacomo in Como, Italy, whose construction started in the 11th century. The project started in 2022 and involved the application of the Historical Building Information Model (HBIM) methodology through a Scan-to-BIM approach was assessed. High-detailed 3D survey techniques were used to acquire the specific shape of the church and annexed buildings. Then, through different modelling strategies, the HBIM environment allowed the representation of all the architectural elements. The purpose of this model is to have essential support to plan the restoration activities and to give the different experts involved a single three-dimensional tool for managing all the information during the development of the construction works. The possibility to update the model over time with geometric and non-geometric information will provide a powerful tool also for other future activities, such as the installation of a monitoring system that could reveal the displacements of bearing elements of the church.

Abstract:
In April 2023, the Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Italy launched the Italia. Open to Meraviglia (Italy. Open to Wonder) campaign with the intention of promoting the beauty of Italy abroad. The Ministry introduced Botticelli?s Venus as a virtual and modern influencer at Lake Como, in front of the Colosseum, and on St. Mark?s Square in Venice. The first advertisements sparked controversy in Italian society, and Eco characterized such phenomena as divisions between apocalyptic thinkers and integrated intellectuals as early as 1964. The aim of this work is to uncover the reasons for such polarization through the content analysis of more than 3000 public comments on the Ministry?s Instagram profile?s most popular posts/images. The study establishes connections between audience reactions and the posts, as well as between the audience and the Ministry (as the senders of this advertising campaign). The analysis also includes a study of the news discourse of the campaign author?s responses in Corriere della Sera, the most circulated daily newspaper in Italy. The harshest criticisms tend to lean towards Eco?s apocalyptic view of popular culture and Hall?s (2017) oppositional reading. On the other side, the authors responded that there was no such thing as bad publicity and pointed to Italian identity as a global phenomenon.
