Abstract:
There has been recent outbreaks of food poisoning associated with Listeria monocytogenes. Most of the outbreaks were attributed to fresh meat and dairy products, and processed foods. This study was therefore carried out to examine the prevalence of Listeria monocytogenes in fish, beef & chicken sold in area markets in Calabar. A total of two hundred and fifty five (255) samples; fresh raw fish, chicken and beef were obtained from six different markets and were analyzed for possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes using compact Dry LS plate. Abstract Compact Dry TC qualifies as a rapid method kit for determining aerobic colony counts in foods. The plates are presterilized and contain culture medium and a cold-soluble gelling agent. The medium is rehydrated by inoculating 1 mL diluted sample into the center of the self-diffusible medium and allowing the solution to diffuse by capillary action. The plates can then be incubated and the colonies counted without any additional steps. The Compact Dry TC method was validated with 5 different raw meats. The performance tests were conducted at 35° and 30°C. In all required performance stud

Controlling large-wavelength acoustic waves via small-size structures is an important direction for the field of noise control. Since porous acoustic material can only absorb low-frequency sound waves when their thickness is approximately one-fourth of the wavelength, such acoustic material is not effective when controlling the large-wavelength acoustic waves with small-size structures. Therefore, the resonant acoustic material has been usually chosen to absorb low-frequency sound waves instead. As a typical resonant acoustic material, microperforated plate structures (MPPS), need one large ca

This paper describes the effect of multilayering on thrust force characteristics in compact Linear Switched Reluctance Motors (LSRMs) having a simple, flat shape. The Layer Structure Linear Switched Reluctance Motors (LS-LSRMs) basically comprise simple layer structure components such as a thin mover and a flat stator core for simple fabrication and for saving space. The use of the simple layer structure components facilitates the simple fabrication of multilayer actuators to generate a large thrust force. Themover consists ofmagnetic pieces sealed with nonmagnetic materials. The stator core i

The dewatering of substrates is one of the key tasks in the handling of material flows in a circular economy. Besides belt filters, sedimenters, and decanters, screw presses are frequently used to reduce the water content of substrates. However, screw presses available on the market are usually designed for high throughputs (>5 m3/h). The dewatering of smaller feed rates (<1 m3/h), however, requires more compact solutions. For this reason, a compact screw press (short screw length), which is normally used in agriculture for cow manure dewatering, was investigated in this work, as there e

In this paper a new protective structure is presented to save human life, in the case of building collapse, caused by an earthquake, a terrorist attack or other catastrophic events. It is well-known that the number of casualties after major earthquakes during night time far exceeds the corresponding number of those events of similar magnitudes occurring that of the day times. The life-saver device discussed here is a bolted-moment-resisting 3-D steel frame that encapsulates a single or double-bed sleeping area at home. The frame consists of a number of beam-columns of angle cross-section, bolt
