Tang, Yong. "Jesuit Leadership as Companionship in the Lord." Thesis, Boston College, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/2502.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Howard J. Gray

This thesis attempts, first of all, to explore and reflect upon the question of “What is Jesuit leadership?” through some developmental landmarks (the founding experiences, the Formula of the Institute, the Constitutions, and the GCs 31-35 documents) within the history of the Society of Jesus. Second, it strives to argue that Jesuit leadership is essentially companionship in the Lord Jesus Christ for his universal mission, which has its depth in “Christ,” its breadth in “companionship,” and its length in “his universal mission.”

Currens, Julie Amanda Baldry. "Peer learning in the practices setting : issues of companionship, collaboration and contrast." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2008. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10020568/.

Full text
Abstract:
The components of peer assisted learning (PAL) in the practice setting have not been previously defined, since research has hitherto focussed on outcomes, rather than construction. Whilst socio-cognitive and sociocultural development theory underpins the development of PAL in both the classroom and practice context, learner choice and flexibility are more evident in the latter: activities are selected by the learner and their student peer, according to personal preference and context, usually without tutor supervision or prior scripting. These are more akin to workplace learning practices than to the classroom. Drawing on data from a triple phased, flexible research design (comprising qualitative interviews, a collective case study and two Q-method studies with undergraduate physiotherapy students from a range of programmes), the activities, behaviours and perceptions of students engaged in PAL in the practice setting are presented in three themes. Companionship casts the peer as a buddy and ally, who helps create a supportive, emotional landscape that prepares for, and sustains, learning. In Collaboration, as learning partners, peers engage in a range of dialogic and activityorientated behaviours which mediate learning through processes of construction and co-construction. In Contrast, peer relationships are enacted according to issues of comparison, competition and conflict. The range of activities and behaviours involved in PAL in the practice setting are consistent across clinical areas, level of student and type of programme. Most students value PAL highly, and successful partnerships are enabled by factors that include mutual trust, respect, compatibility and a commitment to negotiating the shared learning experience. This research contributes new knowledge by extending the application of extant theory, providing a new framework by which PAL in the practice setting may be identified, and a taxonomy that describes its roles and activities. This will inform and prepare academics, clinicians and students engaging in practice-based PAL, and will provide both a foundation for its broader application, and a baseline for further research.

Wainer, Rafael. "When medicine cannot cure : dying children, palliative care, and the production of companionship." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/1597.

Full text
Abstract:
Although the curative model of medical care is predominant it is necessary to consider the palliative strategies at the end-of-life. The inter-relation of dying children, their families and pediatric palliative care teams are seldom analyzed outside Palliative Care. However, it is important to ethnographically think about the disturbing experiences of body and subject disintegration while people are directly experiencing them, even when the person is a child or a newborn baby. A central topic in this study is how personhood, body formation and disintegration, and childhood can be understood within the context of unevenly constructed and shared palliative communication with and without words. Hence, I analyze in this study how a Palliative Care Team in the city of Buenos Aires provides care, communicates, and ultimately produces a particular companionship to dying children and their families. This work is built on qualitative information gathered and produced during my four-month fieldwork with the Palliative Care Team. The ethnographic techniques (participant observation, non-participant observation and open-ended semi-structured interviews) I conducted show that their strategies of care and communication have as the main goal the process of companionship at the end of children’s lives. It is necessary to understand how patients, parents, and other family members are situated in this field of tensions between restorative and palliative medicine, and brought into this culture of Palliative Care in a public children’s hospital. My research asks, in what ways are pediatric Palliative Care practices exclusive to the social and cultural contexts of Buenos Aires? This work has three main sections: 1. care, 2. communication, and 3. companionship. In section one I focus on the clinical and non-clinical aspects of care involving the professionals’ and volunteers’ practices of giving care. In section two I concentrate my attention on the verbal and non-verbal aspects of the Palliative Care Team communication with children and families. In section three I consider the professional production of ‘companionship’. In this thesis I will demonstrate the significance of this concept according to the Palliative Care Team members and how care and communication are the base for the ‘production of companionship.’

Treusch, Pat. "Robotic Companionship : The Making of Anthropomatic Kitchen Robots in Queer Feminist Technoscience Perspective." Doctoral thesis, Linköpings universitet, Tema Genus, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-118117.

Full text
Abstract:
Specific machines furnish the contemporary socio-technical imaginary: ‘Robot companions’ that supposedly herald the age of robots, an age that is signified by the realization of robot technologies that are taking over labor from humans in every sphere of ‘everyday human lives’. How do we want these robot companions to work and look and how do we want to live with these machines?  This thesis explores the engineering of relating humans and machines in the specific context of contemporary robotics from a queer feminist technoscience perspective. The ways in which such engineering processes implement ‘human-likeness’ in realizing the figure of the robot companion are of special concern. At the heart of this study is one robot model: Armar, developed at the Institute for Anthropomatics and Robotics at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Participating in the local everyday practices of establishing the efficient robot-human interface in the kitchen laboratory, this study investigates the ways in which Armar is made domestic as a prospective care service provider and companion in the kitchen. This study applies a posthumanist frame of research to investigate the practices of making anthropomatic kitchen robots. It employs an understanding of this making in terms of ‘performing the kitchen’. This further entails querying the ways in which norms of ‘humanness’ are translated into the human-like robot as well as the idea of pre-figured embodied entities with individual properties that meet in the laboratory. Thus, this thesis maps the labors and reciprocities of learning to see and experience this specific robot model as a future human-like companion for humans by analyzing the apparatuses of bodily co-production between human and machine that are at work in the kitchen laboratory.

Rawnson, Stella. "Stories of companionship and trust : women's narratives of their student midwife caseloading experience." Thesis, Bournemouth University, 2018. http://eprints.bournemouth.ac.uk/31188/.

Full text
Abstract:
It is national policy that midwifery students, as part of the undergraduate midwifery curriculum, gain experience of providing continuity of care for women throughout the childbearing continuum via caseload practice (NMC 2009). Student midwife caseloading has been cited as an example of best practice (DH 2003). However, whilst there is robust evidence of women’s experiences of continuity from qualified midwives (Sandall et al. 2016), there is a lack of information regarding student’s care. Although a small number of studies have been conducted in Australia and Norway, no formal research into women’s experiences of this approach to student involvement in their care appears to have been undertaken in the United Kingdom. This study focussed on hearing women’s personal stories to develop an understanding of how being part of a student midwife’s caseload may have impacted on their childbearing experience. Utilising qualitative methods, the study followed women’s experiences of continuity of care provision from a student midwife, supervised by a qualified midwife, throughout pregnancy, birth and the early days of mothering. I was interested to hear women’s stories of their relationships with students and how these were developed, how they described the care provided in relation to their holistic needs and how, and if, they linked the continuity of care by the student with the outcome of their experience. Data were collected within a longitudinal model through story accounts from six women who had agreed to be part of a student’s caseload. Participant stories were sought on three occasions: twice during pregnancy, and once in the postnatal period. The data gathered at these points in time were viewed as a continuing story that unfolded over the woman’s childbearing event. The story accounts were analysed through a narrative framework using a three phase re-storying model to uncover themes of significance to the individual women within the study, and the women as a group. Phase 1 involved the analysis of the three interview transcripts of the individual woman’s unfolding story. Phase 2 included the construction of an interpretative story or personal experience narrative poem for each participant. Phase 3 provided a synthesis of the data to construct a collective story that encapsulated the emergent narratives themes of significance to the women as a group. The three longitudinal narrative themes of significance to the women as a group were identified as: ‘mutually supportive partnerships’; ‘just like a midwife’ and ‘extra special care’. All women recognised the status of their caseloading student as that of learner, as someone working to become a qualified midwife, and described the reciprocal supportive relationships they developed with students through relational continuity within this context. While identifying the caseloading student as requiring supervision from a qualified midwife, women expressed high levels of trust and confidence in ‘their’ student’s knowledge, clinical competence and caregiving abilities. Being with a student in a continuity relationship, and the extra support it engendered, was highly valued by women. The student’s perceived ‘constant’ presence across the childbearing experience was welcomed and described as central to the women’s comfort and contentment. Study findings provide evidence that this group of women highly valued the student contribution via continuity to their care and this experience may be transferable to other women participating in student caseloading. This understanding adds weight to the Nursing and Midwifery Council expectations and reinforces the value of continuity educational schemes. The knowledge gained provides useful insights for curriculum developers nationally and internationally, educators and practitioners. Recommendations from the study are made for research, education and practice.

Cook, Neil James. "M dwarfs from the SDSS, 2MASS and WISE surveys : identification, characterisation and unresolved ultracool companionship." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/17244.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to use a cross-match between WISE, 2MASS and SDSS to identify a large sample of M dwarfs. Through the careful characterisation and quality control of these M dwarfs I aim to identify rare systems (i.e. unresolved UCD companions, young M dwarfs, late M dwarfs and M dwarfs with common proper motion companions). Locating ultracool companions to M dwarfs is important for constraining low-mass formation models, the measurement of substellar dynamical masses and radii, and for testing ultracool evolutionary models. This is done by using an optimised method for identifying M dwarfs which may have unresolved ultracool companions. To do this I construct a catalogue of 440 694 M dwarf candidates, from WISE, 2MASS and SDSS, based on optical- and near-infrared colours and reduced proper motion. With strict reddening, photometric and quality constraints I isolate a sub-sample of 36 898 M dwarfs and search for possible mid-infrared M dwarf + ultracool dwarf candidates by comparing M dwarfs which have similar optical/near-infrared colours (chosen for their sensitivity to effective temperature and metallicity). I present 1 082 M dwarf + ultracool dwarf candidates for follow-up. Using simulated ultracool dwarf companions to M dwarfs, I estimate that the occurrence of unresolved ultracool companions amongst my M dwarf + ultracool dwarf candidates should be at least four times the average for my full M dwarf catalogue. I discuss yields of candidates based on my simulations. The possible contamination and bias from misidentified M dwarfs is then discussed, from chance alignments with other M dwarfs and UCDs, from chance alignments with giant stars, from chance alignments with galaxies, and from blended systems (via visual inspection). I then use optical spectra from LAMOST to spectral type a subset of my M dwarf + ultracool dwarf candidates. These candidates need confirming as true M dwarf + ultracool dwarf systems thus I present a new method I developed to use low resolution near-infrared spectra which relies on two colour similar objects (one an excess candidate, one not) having very similar spectra. A spectral difference of these two colour similar objects should leave the signature of a UCD in the residual of their differences, which I look for using the difference in two spectral bands designed to identify UCD spectral features. I then present the methods used to identify other rare systems from my full M dwarf catalogue. Young M dwarfs were identified by measuring equivalent widths of Hα from the LAMOST spectra, and by measuring rotation periods from Kepler 2 light curves. I identify late M dwarfs photometrically (using reduced proper motion and colour cuts) and spectroscopically (using the LAMOST spectra with spectral indices from the literature). Also I present common proper motion analysis aimed at finding Tycho-2 primaries for my M dwarfs and look for physically separated M dwarf + M dwarf pairs (internally within my full M dwarf catalogue).

Wikholm, Catherine E. H. "The experience of canine companionship during recovery from post-traumatic stress disorder : an interpretative phenomenological analysis." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2015. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/808556/.

Full text
Abstract:
The use of assistance or service dogs trained to perform tasks to ameliorate symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is becoming more widespread. However, the rationale for this intervention is currently largely based on anecdotal evidence. Pet dog ownership is very common in Western society and it is therefore likely that many individuals with PTSD are already dog owners, however, little attention has been paid to the potential therapeutic role of an ‘untrained’ dog. This exploratory study sought to gain insights into how individuals experience canine companionship in relation to their recovery. Four participants were interviewed and their accounts analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA; Smith, Flowers & Larkin, 2009). Three super-ordinate themes were identified: ‘a protective partnership’; ‘beneficial behaviours: enabling a shift in focus’; and ‘role in reclaiming life’. A discussion of the findings in relation to extant literature is presented followed by a critique of the present study. Recommendations for further research are also made and implications for clinical practice are explored.

Garrett, Elizabeth Ann. "The Ancient Art of Smile-Making." TopSCHOLAR®, 2014. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1366.

Full text
Abstract:
If I am anything, I am a Kentuckian, which means I appreciate a good storyteller. In my writing, I hope to bring back some dignity to the “lost cause” of the good values from a broken culture. While I am not quite “southern” enough to qualify as a writer of Southern Gothic fiction, I can relate to this brand of identity crisis in which someone wants to maintain an archaic mindset in a culture charging towards “progress.” As technology and corporate success take precedence over a genteel and pastoral soul, our collective competitiveness has crippled a quaint future of back porch comforts. Being well-read or holding open doors won’t pay for student loans, and there is no such thing as stars in our crowns anymore. For many regions of Kentucky, there is this conflict within the graying of small town communities. My region is one of these. As time marches on, the agrarian lifestyle itself becomes industrialized, and these old family farms, upon which small towns are built, are not self-sustaining. In my stories, I capture the perspectives of a rural community’s personalities. My Regionalism may be dated, but then so are the small town values. With these short stories, I hope to create a collection of characters whose backgrounds may be singular but whose messages are universal. My stories are about the universal fear of loneliness. Perry and White, the cameo characters, pop up throughout because they epitomize this with their irrational companionship. “The Ancient Art of Smile-Making,” “A Well Meaning Marionette,” “The Peacock Cloister,” and “In the Garden, Swallowing Pearls” are essentially about this innate need for company. “Murdered in a Good Dress” and “Myrtle Slog” illustrate the homesickness experienced by those who divorce themselves from closeness of the rural community. Sometimes we call “friendship” kitschy and cliché. And why is that? I made Perry and White’s bond a bit absurd because it is almost ridiculous that there could be a person in the wild world who would sacrifice themselves.

Geller, Krista Scott. "Quantifying the Power of Pets: The Development of an Assessment Device to Measure Attachment Between Humans and Companion Animals." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27274.

Full text
Abstract:
This study developed and evaluated a 34-item scale designed to measure human and companion animal attachment. A total of 398 individuals, ranging in age from 18 to 87, who have a pet completed the Pet-Attachment Scale (PAS). These individuals also completed the Companion Animal Bonding Scale (CABS), which asks respondents how much caretaking they devote to their pets. The PAS and the CABS were highly correlated, r=-.68 (p<.001), with an overlapping variance of 46%. The inter-item consistency or Chronbachâ s Alpha of the PAS was .961, compared to a Chronbachâ s Alpha of .862 for the CABS. The factor analysis of the PAS revealed two factors; Companionship (12 items) and Emotional Fulfillment (7 items). Thus, the PAS can be shortened to 19 items for follow-up research. The factor analysis for the CABS revealed only one factor (i.e., caretaking), and the analysis suggested the scale could be reduced from 8 to 3 items. The strong correlations between the PAS and the CABS suggest concurrent, convergent, and construct validity for the PAS. A stepwise regression for the PAS revealed three significant predictors: 1) responsibility, 2) favorite pet chosen, and 3) gender. Women who were responsible for their pet, and did not select a particular pet as their favorite, scored highest on attachment to their pets. A stepwise regression for the CABS revealed four predictors: 1) responsibility, 2) favorite pet chosen, 3) live with this pet, and 4) gender. These predictors for the CABS were the same as for the PAS, with the addition that those who lived with their pet gave more caretaking than those who did not. Analysis of variance was used to explore the effects of the predictor variables on the PAS and the CABS. These analyses revealed significant effects of gender and age category on both pet attachment (PAS) and pet caretaking (CABS). Women in the middle age category were most attached to their pets (PAS) and gave the most caretaking to their pets (CABS). The unique feature of the PAS, not measured by the CABS, was an Emotional Fulfillment factor. Future research should distinguish between pet attachment as companionship versus emotional fulfillment.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to understand the nature of the creative leadership phenomenon in small high technology firms (SHTFs) by exploring and explaining the phenomenon. The existing landscape on creative leadership's research focuses on the outcome perspective with a sing le level analysis by utilising cognitive dimension in understanding the phenomenon. Therefore, this thesis suggests a new theory that explains the phenomenon based on a process perspective with multilevel analysis, which analyses individual, team and organisation levels by highlighting the central position of the aesthetic dimension. The current study is qualitative in nature and is underpinned by phenomenological symbolic interactionism, which facilitated the theory development process. An Abductive case study as a research strategy was employed. The narratives that explained the phenomenon were sought from the leaders and their followers in two SHTFs and two small low-technology firms (SLTFs) which also helped to increase the understanding of the creative leadership phenomenon in SHTFs. The results of the study unfold two issues that are the contributions to creative leadership and entrepreneurship knowledge. The new theory that is based on the findings suggests that: the creative leadership phenomenon is about tile individual leaders and their followers in SHTFs utilise felt meanings with cognitive abilities to appraise the situation and cope tile situation with companionship relationship and pleasant space for innovation. This study makes several theoretical and empirical contributions to the theories of creative leadership (the new theory) and small technology firm (the similarities and differences between SHTFs and SLTFs). It created a new theory that increases the understanding of the leaders and followers' action in small technology firms and also as guidance for the policy makers to promote creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship

Abstract:
From fleeting interactions to long affairs, our relationships with things are diverse and complex. Like people, designed objects and environments are close companions in our lives. The way we understand and engage with artifacts is parallel to the way we interpret and interact with each other. A constant source of comfort and delight, frustration and anxiety, their personalities inform our everyday dialogues and experiences. Designed artifacts assume engaging and pleasurable personalities when they transcend materials, challenge perceptions, and garner active, reflective interactions. Through the investigation of familiar materials such as concrete, crayons, paper, sequins, and thread in unfamiliar formats and contexts, I am creating objects that are playful in construction and interaction. By imbuing objects with friendly and intriguing personalities, everyday interactions and experiences with these objects are elevated, as users invest in pleasurable forays and relationships.

Höög, Lina, and Ida Bokefalk.

Full text
Abstract:
Change is a process that most people can relate to. It is also something that is considered to be inevitable for both personal and professional life. External and internal factors affecting organizations that want to change  then affect the people within the organization. But how do different people react to changes? Does it acknowledge the fact that individuals have different perceptions and different reactions to changes? Whether a change is considered to be successful or not depends on whose perspective into account. Our purpose with this study was to investigate the employees' experiences of an organizational change within a public school. We hope to contribute to a greater knowledge of what employees consider to be important for change leaders to take into account the introduction of new change management. Also to be able to provide a wider theoretical knowledge on the phenomenon to change leaders should be able to use the information to help meet future change jobs. We want the study to answer the internal conditions necessary based on employees' experiences for a successful change process. We have made a qualitative case study and collected empirical data from semi-structured interviews. Our theoretical basis consists of research on various aspects that influence employee perspective, and together with our empirical material is the basis for our analysis and interpretation. The most concrete conclusion we have drawn from employees' perceptions of organizational change is that the emphasis should be placed on reaching a workable communication.

Abstract:

Abstract:

In schools, a lot of activities require co-operation among the students. In Lpo 94, a large emphasis is put on the mission of schools to contribute to an understanding and brotherliness among the students in the school. According to the syllabus, the subject Physical Education should include the conditions needed to improve the fellowship among children and youth. In this thesis, the way in which the subject Physical Education affects fellowship among students is analyzed. Students have been interviewed and answered questions related to the fellowship in school and more specifically, during the classes in Physical Education. The main questions that have been answered are: How do students define fellowship in school? What do students consider to be important in order to strengthen fellowship in school? In what way does Physical Education affect fellowship according to students? Which special conditions exist during Physical Education that can strengthen fellowship? The results show that the way in which the students define fellowship can be divided into four main categories: everyone takes part, doing things together, nice atmosphere and a common interest. The students believe that the subject Physical Education strengthens fellowship in several ways. The conditions that contribute to improved fellowship are, according to the students: the “free” elements of the subject, to be part of a team, to do things together and the demands on co-operation put on the students. The students have different opinions regarding what is most important in order to strengthen fellowship in school. The students in the music section mention a common interest whereas the students in the general section believe that fellowship is improved when they get to do things together.

Abstract:
Introduction Fathers and husbands attendance to chilbirth is an increasing trend since 1960s. This phenomenon has marked the history of families and Obstetrics in various contexts. Listening to fathers is an important strategy to improve the mother\'s and babies\' health care, as well as to provide better support to the labour companion. Goals To describe and analyze paternal perspective about the reproductive process, getting to know the elements of childbirth prepare, whether there are implications for the outcome of pregnancy, as well as perceptions about the risks and benefits of obstetric care in different care models. Methods Qualitative research conducted through semi-structured interviews in person, via Skype and e-mail, with a self-selected sample from institutional publicity and social media. Data analyzed from pre-determinates categories, and new themes arising from the data set. Results 23 men were included in the study, all were present at childbirth, attending vaginal birth at hospitals, planned home births, cesarean section intrapartum and scheduled cesarean section. Data show that parents have the desire to attend childbirth as an essential part of their reproductive experience, as well as they enjoy subjective benefits for their fatherhood. During childbirth, fathers qualify their presence with elements of protection and companionship. The expectant management model of care is possible only after negotiation with the birth provider, which also depends on the quality of pacient\'s preparation in terms of information on reproductive rights and best practice recommendations. At the hospital, they also describe the different constraints for the strict compliance of brazilian \'Attendance Childbirth Law\', as well as for the experience of birth as a family event. Conclusions Ensure the unrestricted presence of companion during childbirth brings benefits not only to the health of both mother and baby, but also to the subjective experience of men with the reproductive process and fatherhood. However, fathers involvement is still a challenge posed by many health services being valued only in restricted spaces, more commonly outside hospitals. In large part, the constraints are of the order of control and restriction of personal autonomy in health institutions, contrarying best evidence on effective support and women centered care, which values childbirth as a family experience.

Abstract:
This research aims at identifying the contribution of Henri Desroche (Roanne 1914-Paris 1994) to adult education, within his extensive scientific work. In particular, after focusing on keywords such as community and companionship in his work, the contexts which led to the creation (1958) and the development of Collège Coopératif of Paris, of DHEPS (Diplôme des Hautes Etudes des Pratiques Sociales) and of the Université Cooperative Internationale (UCI) have been analyzed. In conclusion, the possibilities of transferability in Italy of Desrochian intuitions have been outlined. This study is a part of the history of educational institutions. The adopted methodology consisted in the analysis of the most “educational” works of Henri Desroche (as well as his early work, which proved to be very illuminating) and of the author’s literature. It also includes interviews with Desroche’s colleagues and the researchers that continued his work. Theoretical and practitioner at the same time, Henri Desroche studied Marxism, the sociology of religions and social economy, with a particular attention to the various forms of cooperation in the religious, economical and educational fields

Abstract:
Social networks play a significant role in adolescent decision making, specifically when it comes to dietary outcomes. This study, granted by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), assessed the connectivity of these social networks and the impact they have on fruit and vegetable, added sugar and sugar sweetened beverage consumption. Additionally, the relationship between shopping companionship and dietary choices was studied. Positive and negative associations were found among adolescents who shop with parents or friends. It was also found that those adolescents with greater social network cohesion were found to have more negative dietary outcomes. Divulging further into the relationships within adolescent social networks may improve fruit and vegetable and decrease added sugar consumption within rural communities.

The herewith study has an analitical-philosofical outline and puts the dichotomy between solidarity and objectivity under moderation, more specifically, the focus of tension between the pragmatic conception of social companionship of Richard Rorty and the representacionist one of Jürgen Habermas. The first one edifies the commitment with solidarity above any manner of rationality, sticking with being loyal to the idea that there is nothing independent of the world of the man, of his conventions and practices. The second one, according to Habermas, point of view, submits any manner of human companionship to intersubjective rational principles, which go far beyond the cognitive-instrumental aspects of the human accomplishments that are essential for the social cohesion and the settlement of a fair and equalitarian society. The study concludes that: (a) it is possible, even not giving up on rationality, to be a solidarity member in a wider and socially fair society; (b) every human society is full with latent potential wealth which is plausible of physical, symbolic and spiritual assumption; (c) the societies in which the members have a standard of living that is below the line of poverty, potential wealth only becomes plausible of assumption as long as solidarity puts aside its supporting role in relation to the objective reason

In spite of eighteen years have passed since the 1988 Federal Constitution promulgation, still today it is a reality someone turns up with preoccupying situations involving state omissions in the face of the called fundamental human rights, more exactly in what concerns their application to minority social segments. So, the main theme we intend to accomplish with the present work informed about the practical and adequated difficulties pertinent to them, is the necessary of concretion of the fundamental right of familiar and community companionship toward our children and teenagers, which dogma is expressed assured at the constitutional text, more precisely in the caput of its Art. 227. Following the same way, it will also be object of this study the State responsibility toward the situations that is not possible the concretion of the mentioned fundamental right, because of the public means omission in such cases so that the constitutional subjects injured for such act have, at least, at their disposal, mitigation instruments of the harm caused by the unavoidable absence of familiar companionship, which, without any doubt, will give credit to the isonomy fundamental vector, devised in the caput of the Art. 5th of Lex Legum. The state inaction and omission mentioned above come always to redound to illicit effect, such as, take off the child and the teenager expurgated from the familiar and community companionship the possibility of a kind and condign development, opening for them a way in order to ask for an effective juridical constitutional tutelage having in mind the correction or the mitigation of the mentioned and damaging problem. It will detach the processual ways capable to determine the State responsibility by the omission toward the fundamental right to the familiar and community companionship of the children and teenagers on a real plan, with special prominence to the public civil action, the injunction mandate and the condemnatory knowledge action. Such instruments, informed about the existence of other possibilities, are apt to search for indemnity based upon the theory of civil responsibility called of loss of a chance. Inside this context, what is intended with this work, without any illusion of exhausting the theme, was to bring to a discussion that the familiar and community companionship is a fundamental right essencial to the children and teenagers development; and the State cannot draw back the obligation to give to the less fortunates, efficient conditions in order to reduce the problems concerning to the mentioned absence, under penalty of being responsible for the inconstitutional omission of its acts

Abstract:
This PhD thesis originates from the surprise felt while reading critical receptions of Roger Blin’s stage creations of plays written by Samuel Beckett and Jean Genet. Though reflecting upon the presence on stage of artificial beings bereft of any substance and upon an established comic tone, the critics perceive the performance of the actors as natural. They point out the establishment of some “new realism” or “new theatre”, words that speculate in the first place a renewal in the way the human is figured on stage.Roger Blin, who had been deeply influenced by surrealists and Antonin Artaud, indeed stands up for a committed and poetic theatre that, all the while tackling the bourgeoisie and its codes, introduces on stage a hybrid creature that crosses various performance arts (puppet theatre, the clown, cabaret, far-eastern forms, etc.). In this respect, Blin’s repeated meetings with Beckett and Genet, whose plays distort classic characters and formally interrogate the stage, enable him to commit into fruitful companionships. In line with the Cartel, Blin tries to reveal the very essence of the oeuvre. From his invisible staging of Beckett’s plays to his visible staging of Genet’s plays, Blin seems to demand from his actors a balanced performance in between theatrical demonstration and a quest for the precise combination of gesture and words, in order to expose the persistence of some human kindness. This may trigger a powerful poetic effect that echoes the private anguishes of the members of the audience, facing a hard historical context: the consequences of discovering the concentration camps, of the use of the atomic bomb, and of the decolonisation process

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to exam how youth experience the importance of their parent’s engagement on their own wellbeing. How available do the children experience that their parents are; how do the children experience their interaction with their parents and how do the children experience the social support they get from their parents? The youth in this study consisted of eight girls and boys that talked about how they experience their parent’s engagement and interaction. From the interviews it emerged that all of the adolescents wanted to spend more time together with their parents, that they wanted to have the chance to talk to their parents about everything and to do things together. The conclusion is that the youth in this study experienced that they felt better if they had the chance to talk to their parents. The youth experienced that inter alia common interests, the parent’s involvement in everyday life and the amount of time they spend together, established a safe base in their relationship and in which the youth perceived that they could talk to their parents.

Abstract:

Transforming the Brute addresses the ethical acceptability of creating painless animals for usage in biomedical experimentation.  In recent decades the possibility of creating genetically decerebrate animals or AMLs for human ends has been discussed in scientific, academic, and corporate communities.  While the ability to create animals that cannot feel, experience, and are more plant than animal remains science fiction, biomedicine may now be able to eliminate or significantly reduce the capacity to feel pain and nociception through genetic engineering.  With this new technology comes the opportunity to vastly increase the welfare of animals used in biomedical experimentation, yet this possibility has largely been ignored by the scientific and academic community.  This work seeks to reveal the moral necessity of creating painless animals for usage in biomedical experimentation for animal welfare ends.  Intrinsic objections relating to animal integrity, rights, companionship, the alteration of telos, humility and virtue are considered.  The benefit of eliminating nociceptive pain in experimental animals is addressed, and differences are examined between biomedical experimentation and other usage of animals for human ends which makes the proposed creation of painless animals ethically unique.  Finally, an argument is presented for the moral necessity of replacing normal animals with painless animals in biomedical experimentation with consideration given to genetically decerebrate animals.

"Companionship Preferences in Incentive Travel." Master's thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.15057.

Abstract:
abstract: Incentive travel continues to grow as a form of motivation in the work place. However, there is little research that has examined future potential incentive travelers' wants and needs from an incentive travel trip. The purpose of this study was to understand how and in what way various potential incentive travelers' beliefs, including attitudes, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control and motivation, influence their future inclusion of a significant other on an incentive travel trip using a modified theory of planned behavior. Moreover, the potential moderating effect of past inclusion of a significant other experience was examined as well. The study collected 129 usable responses from potential incentive travelers from companies based in Iowa and Arizona. The research for this project was conducted through online questionnaires that included quantitative and qualitative questions. The study used exploratory factor analysis (EFA), Pearson's correlation and multiple regression to test study hypotheses. The results of the multiple regression indicated three constructs, attitudes, subjective norm and motivation appeared to be statistically significant, while perceived behavioral control was not statistically significant in predicting potential incentive travelers' intended inclusion of a significant other. Perceived behavioral control was not significant because the control of including a significant other is dependent on the participant's employer. Pearson's correlation found a moderating effect of past inclusion of a significant other on subjective norm and perceived behavioral control. In conclusion, the results validated the theory of planned behavior in the context of incentive travelers' inclusion of a significant other.

The current society gradually towards an aging society, then many elderly people need companionship and make a deal with the immediate action when emergency condition occurs. The function of the robot is able to accompany the elderly and monitor the physical condition of the elderly. The seal robot uses it’s sensors to interact with users. In the study, a pressure sensor and voice recognition sensor is set in the robot, so that the elderly can interact with the robot by using sensors. A voice module is also placed in the robot, so that the elderly can hear the sound of a baby seal and the seal robot is seem to be found alive like. In the reaction part of the user status, the common intelligent bracelet is worn and it can send messages via Bluetooth module to the robot. The robot sends the information to the internet through the Bluetooth module and then the VB on computer will receiver the data and the status of the user can be transmitted to the doctor. Those 8 DoFs (motors) include 2 DoFs for each leg, 2 DoFs in the head, and 2 DoFs in the tail. It’s architecture is organized with the acrylic sheet. The different thickness of acrylic sheet can let seal robot move really. Thick acrylic sheet can make seal robot not be broken easy, and thin acrylic sheet can let seal robot not to move clumsy. Users can make the command to the seal robot by voice recognition sensor, so it will be stand, sit, come ……ect, that the users want. There are three pressure sensors on the head, and three on the body, seal robot performed and make sounds by pressures sensors and voice modules. Such as touching seal robot with little power, and the seal robot will nod head and yelling happily. Or if you touch with heavy power, the seal robot will shake head and shout angrily. The elderly will wear our smart bracelet, and the elderly’s heartbeat message will pass by Bluetooth module to the Web, that we can motor the elderly’s heartbeat and deal with suddenly condition in immediate.

In many online games, players develop a relationship with their game roles or avatars through playing. Some players even develop a companionship with their game roles or avatars. For developing such companionships, players must continue playing online games. Motivation crucially influences the willingness to play online games. The flow experience is a crucial factor that requires a player’s continual playing of a game. However, the relationship among game motivation, flow experience, and companionship is unclear; whether a flow experience affects players’ companionship with their game role is also unclear. Therefore, it is difficult to design an online game for players that effectively connects the game motivation, flow experience and companionship. The purpose of this study is to choose online pet games as study samples, and this study used a game motivation scale, flow experience scale, and the Companionship Scale of Artificial Pets to identify the relationship among game motivation, flow experience, and companionship, and the relationship between flow and companionship levels. In this study, 216 valid questionnaires were collected, and the results demonstrated that (1) game motivation for online pet game players was primarily immersion and achievement, compared with achievement motivation, immersion motivation had a greater influence on flow experience and the development of player companionship with online pets. (2) Players with immersion and achievement motivation had a substantially enhanced flow experience and companionship with their online pets. (3) A high flow experience enhances a player’s companionship with their online pet, whereas a low flow experience results in low level of companionship. (4) A high level of companionship increases the flow experience, and a low level of companionship results in a low flow experience. (5) The factors of concentration and enjoyment as well as telepresence/loss of self-consciousness and satisfaction had a significantly positive relationship. According to the results of this study, improvement in the relationship between game motivation, flow and companionship can encourage more players to acquire online pet games and, through an increase in game marketing, designers can amass more resources to assist in developing more online games or artificial companions.

There are more and more lonely people in Taiwan. In order to protect against loneliness, the pet market scale increase gradually. However, some people can't have a pet for the limit of living environment or other factors. The e-pet with part of real pet function, like company or comfort, and don't need so much time to take care, become the most popular game now. The e-pet even not only just be a game, but emphasize the "company". Some study even call the e-pet "artificial companion", focus on the company function. To establish the companionship is a design trend in e-pet, but there isn't an appropriate measure tool for the e-pet's companionship. The purpose of the study is to establish the scale for the companionship of e-pet. The structures of the scale include three parts, the relations between "real pet and people", "people and people" and the "company features of e-pet". The subjects are designed by the structure and edited by the professional and item analysis. The results of the measure analysis are six factors, which affect the companionship of e-pet. The study also infers a formula from the discriminant analysis for discriminating the state of companionship. In the future, just substitute the factors' averages for the formula, we can discriminate the state of the companionship.

The purpose of this study is to assess the relationship and attachment between human and companion animals among adult companion animal guardians, and how the presence of a companion animal may affect the psychological process of the individual through the use of speaking language. Further more, this study also focus on an understanding of the differences of pet attachment and the effect of a pet’s companionship to human. Companion animal attachment was measured by the Pet Attachment Questionnaire (PAQ), interviews were conducted under the experimental settings with and without companion animals, the data then were analyzed by C-LIWC as a inquiry on psychological process. The findings suggested that the presence of the companion animal did not affect the feelings of participants during the interviews. However, the participants’ cognitive performances with the presence of companion animals implied deeper thinking and meaning searching. The attachment style also has influence on the effect of the pets’ companionship on human; as the result, participants with different pet attachment traits displayed different cognitive performance and social process during the interviews. Through the qualitative interviews, the results also suggested that participants with different pet attachment styles valued differently on their companion animals and the impacts from the companionship, they also had different insights of their relationship with companion animals. Based on the findings, psychological counselors and practitioners may regard the human animal attachments as an understanding to their clients; utilize the effect of the presence of companion animals and to consider the companion animals as a part of the clients’ social context. For future research, it may be essential and beneficial to access further on the correlation between pet attachment style and other personality traits and interpersonal attachment styles.

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most common childhood psychiatric disorders, the main symptoms are inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity. In nowadays's society, the fertility rate is declining while the children with ADHD are increasing year by year. It raises a question, during the development, could the symptoms of ADHD be influenced by the company of peers? Dose the increase of the opportunity to interact with peers may improve the symptoms of ADHD? Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) is currently the main hyperactivity disorder animal model, and the locomotion activity is commonly used index of hyperactivity. We measure the locomotion activity of SHR under different conditions, including lived alone, lived with another SHR, lived with WKY, and the controls of WKY lived alone and WKY lived with another WKY. The locomotion activity in open field were recorded from the ages of the fourth week (one week after weaning) to the tenth week (two weeks after puberty). The results indicated that the presence or absence of peer companionship for SHR and WKY during the development all had no significant differences in locomotion activity.

Abstract:

Obstacles to labour companionship at Bamalete Lutheran Hospital (BLH) in Botswana are discussed. There is an underutilization of labour companionship in the BLH maternity ward despite several efforts that have been made to introduce labour companionship. Labour companionship is a rare exception in the BLH labour ward. Why is labour companionship underutilized at Bamalete Lutheran Hospital and what could be done to promote labour companions? An explorative, descriptive, qualitative, contextual, multiple case study was conducted to explore and describe obstacles to, and the need for, the utilisation of labour companionship, and to develop and recommend strategies to overcome the identified obstacles to labour companionship at BLH. Five unaccompanied primigravidae were selected from mothers who had delivered at BLH. Their ideal labour companions and the attending midwives were also selected for the study. A semi-structured interview with open-ended questions and an audiotape were used to collect data from the primigravidae and their ideal companions. Naive sketches were used to collect data from the attending midwives. Morse and Field cognitive processes were used to analyse the data (1996: 103). This study identified four major obstacles to labour companionship as the lack of knowledge about the concept of labour companionship and the availability of the service by the primigravidae; the lack of knowledge on how labour companionship should be practised in a hospital setting by the ideal companions; the lack of privacy of the labour ward unit; and the reluctance of the midwives to implement labour companionship. The Botswana Sexual Reproductive Health information, education and communication (IEC) approach was utilized as a guide in developing the promotion strategies for labour companionship at BLH

This thesis discusses how officialdom interacted from the late Eastern Han dynasty to the Dong Jin dynasty to see whether fits to what Mr. Mou Zong San said, “it is a process of branching which opposite to the Confucianism.” The first chapter is an introduction explaining the motivation of this thesis and the research result. The second chapter discusses the concept of” companionship” and “friendship” before the Eastern Han dynasty. In a word, “companionship” was self-indulgence, and “friendship”was ethics which became officialdom’s points of view on friends. Hence, the general prevalence of the officialdoms’ interaction in terms of companionship after the “Eastern Han Dang Gu” became what those passionate scholars wanted to blame. Until Wei Jin Dynasty, under the great changing environment of politics and mainstream of thinking, officialdoms never again took the examples of the Eastern Han“Confucianism the most respected school” or “to praise moral and integrity.” Instead, they paid more attention to individual temperance and talents. Therefore, Wei Jin officialdoms were becoming “scholar” different from previous officialdoms’ characteristics. This transition also influenced their perspective of “companionship” and “friendship.” As to “companionship”, clique was never criticized by scholars, and group associations became the main form of interaction between scholars. Besides political cliques, it took shape pedigree group, literature group and an idle talk group, which broadened the range of companionship. This thesis calls this as “the type companionship.” As to “friendship”, making friends with helpful friends was not believed by scholar anymore. Except morality, they regarded affection as more important and then come into fraternity, split-up and feud relationship, thus thesis calls them as “affection friendship”. In which, split-up and feud relationships are much more special called “backing friendship’. Their friendship begun as glorious but with pity ending, scholars persisted in affections, so when their friends didn’t live up to their expectation, there still have some unusual people with unusual need. We must pay attraction to the phenomenon of the positive and negative of affections. The communicative action of Wei Jin scholars didn’t see morality as a criterion. But it doesn’t mean they ignore morality. Instead it means when they find the relationship between self and group-self relation, the morality becomes a supporting role. Just when morality is the only basis, people are able to have more possibilities and chances to discover themselves. And only in the Wei Jin dynasty could make“ companionship” and “friendship” a new sight.

In Taiwan, personal assistance has become a formal social welfare service since 2012. Unlike the traditional care service such as homecare service, personal assistance emphasizes the rights of disabled people’s self-determination. This study explores the practices of personal assistance, the development of the relationships between disabled persons and personal assistants (PAs), and the meanings of independence in Taiwan. The methodology of this study is in-depth interview, which 6 PA users with physical impairments and 6 PAs were interviewed. The results show that not only do PAs provide assistance of what disabled people ask for, but also provide emotional support and companionship. This indicates that PAs are more than just disabled people’s “arms and legs”; additionally, emotion and informal relationships are also existed in their interactions. PAs and disabled people with different backgrounds and expectations, such as life experiences, ways of dealing things, understanding of independent living, expectations for wages or working hours, end up with different ways of relationships. In addition, since personal assistance is outsourced by most of the local governments, the relevant agencies are expected to take on a vital role of matching and conflict resolving. It is also important to notice that the providers and the local governments decided the substances of personal assistance service even if it might be against what disabled people’s wills. This study has revealed the other side of independent living and personal assistance in Taiwan, which emphasizes the importance of the relationships between disabled people and PAs, and suggests that mutual respect and good communication is important of maintaining the relationships between disabled people and the PAs.

Abstract:
This dissertation proposes that popular movements or uprisings can unite ethics and politics in a direct, practical manner and constitute an illuminating domain from which to advance normative theory that responds to the challenges of injustice in our world today. Any study of these movements ought to engage with a specific event and its context and renounce the position of ‘observer.’ Accordingly, I have chosen to examine the revolutions sparked in the Arab world over the past decade, particularly focusing on the account of Tahrir Square. In order to appreciate the novelty these revolutions offer, it is necessary to first dismantle the deeply entrenched epistemic grounds of Western political theory which consider revolutions only on the basis of their end results, particularly whether or not they effect regime change. These popular movements not only defy democratization studies and its prescription for change from above, they also fundamentally challenge the domain of politics and some of its basic tenets. This confrontation occurs the moment the people gain their agency and use their political power demonstrably and concretely. The domain of politics is further challenged when the people create, as they did in Tahrir Square, a public sphere that is receptive to individual desires and interests as well as collective solidarity and responsibility. The conditions under which these movements organize their collective political action – horizontally, non-hierarchically, and unmediated by representative and leaders – resist the threat of their power being instrumentalized to obtain middling results pertaining to state power. This form of organization also reconfigures the crowd’s ethical interactions, unmistakeably on display in Tahrir Square, producing what I call “ethics of companionship.” These ethics can be reformulated and practiced in manner attuned to both self and other, and adapted to the specific needs and injustices of the world around us. An ethics of companionship is responsive and open for negotiation and persuasion, and above all, it makes an art out of our living together.

Nowadays, the population of pet owners is increasing. Through pet companionship, the owners can receive relaxation and pleasure of mind. On the other side, the benefits of the companionship will increase physical activities and cultivate habit of taking exercise. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between attachment of pet owners and attitudes of principles for deep knowledge. The two questionnaires were used as the research tool, including Lexington Attachment to Pet Scale (LAPS) (Johnson, Garrity, & Stallones, 1992) and Nine Principles for Deep Knowledge Scale (PDKS). PDKS had content validity and convergent validity. In this study, the content validity was measured by back translation method and Cronbach’s value (α =.921) was measured by internal consistency, and indicated that LAPS was a useful tool. There were 209 pet owners (Male=80, Female=129) who had taken pets to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of National Chung Hsing University participated in this study. The statistical methods of descriptive statistics, Pearson’s Correlation ,t-test, one-way ANOVA, Simple Linear Regression and Logistic Regression of software SPSS 19.0 were used to exam the relationships between attachment to pet owners’ attitude toward the principles for deep knowledge in their daily lives. The result of this study showed that the degree of attachment to pets had a positive correlation with attitude of deep knowledge. Additionally, there were statistically significant differences between the gender and the two variables of attachment to pets and attitude of deep knowledge. Therefore, the owners(N=148,70.8%) used to carry their pets to exercise demonstrated higher levels in the two variables of attachment to pets and attitude toward the principles for deep knowledge. The finding of this study proved the concept that pet companionship can increase both of the mental and interpersonal supports. Hence, to be aware of the degree of attachment to pets will predict the attitude toward the principles for deep knowledge and to improve owners’ daily lives and habits.
