Abstract:
AbstractThe paper presents the results of the study of the impact and effects of communication models of public relations and organization–public relationships on company credibility and financial performance in companies in Serbia. The data were obtained by interviewing 415 respondents (PR managers, PR practitioners and marketing experts) working in 93 companies in Serbia. The dimensions of the organization–public relationships have stronger positive influences and effects on company credibility and financial performance than the dimensions of communication models of public relations. The influence of the dimensions of trust, commitment, satisfaction and communal relationship is particularly emphasized. Of the four communication models, the strongest positive impact on company credibility and financial performance is achieved by the two-way symmetrical dimension, and then the two-way asymmetrical dimension. The dimensions of communication models of public relations and organization–public relationships have the greatest influence and predictive effect on the dimension of trustworthiness, followed by the dimension of expertise, and finally the dimension of financial performance. Therefore, a greater impact exists on company credibility than on financial performance.

Abstract:
Based on construal level theory and subadditivity effect, in this study we examined the joint impacts of multiple dimensions of psychological distance (i.e., social and temporal distance) on consumer evaluations of a company in which the behavior was ambivalent in terms of morality or competence. The findings indicated that consumers perceiving the company as both socially and temporally close evaluated it more favorably when ambivalence concerned morality. However, when 1 or more dimensions of psychological distance extended, consumers tended to evaluate the company more favorably when the source of ambivalence concerned competence. These findings suggest that consumer evaluations of a company are influenced by not only which aspect of company behavior is ambivalent, but also by whether or not it is a single dimension or multiple dimensions of psychological distance being considered. Theoretical and practical implications are also discussed.

Introduction: A steam power plant company is an electric energy production company, utilizing main energy sources such as coal, biomass, and other energies that are related to production process. This company is a big industry that operates 24 hours and have many various steps of production process. It is also supported by a variety of high-risk system equipment such as confined spaces, working at height, hot work, ergonomics, mechanics, and others. This type of work can lead to workers’ unsafe conditions and unsafe acts. One of the causes is the psychological aspects of workers, namely the lack of workers’ awareness and understanding in implementing occupational safety aspects. Workers’ psychology in this study is Psychological Capital (PsyCap) with self-efficacy, hope, optimism, and resilience dimensions. This study aims to analyze PsyCap impacts on safety behavior of contractor workers. Methods: this study was an observational analytic research using cross-sectional approach. The population was all workers in a steam power plant company in units 7&8, totalling 400 contractors. This study was conducted by distributing questionnaires to 101 respondents of contractor workers. The questionnaires consisted of items about self-efficacy, hope, optimism, and resilience dimension of PsyCap and safety compliance and safety participation dimension of safety behavior. The analysis used a Structural Equational Modeling (SEM) method and AMOS software. Results: PsyCap dimensions that impacted on safety behavior was optimism. Conclusion: optimism dimension was the factor that had the strongest impact on safety behavior especially workers’ safety compliance. Meanwhile, other PsyCap dimensions which did not have not impact on safety behavior were safety compliance and safety participation dimensions. Keywords: contractor worker, psychological capital, safety behavior, steam power plant company, structural equational modelling

AbstractThis paper investigates the relationship between the dimensions of the decisionmaking process quality and company performance of top managers’ in Slovenia. We found out that companies whose managers exhibit an above-average dimension of openness of spirit in the quality of the decision making process, on average, have a higher stance on foreign markets as companies in which managers show a below-average open spirit. For the managers who work in companies that are present in foreign markets, we could confirm that there is a low/weak correlation between the dimension of effort of the decision-making process quality and the number of employees in a company.

Abstract:
Social and environmental accounting has attracted growing attention from companies in Indonesia as these companies face an increasing pressure to report their social and environmental responsibilities to the public. Despite this trend, however, Indonesia lacks a social and environmental reporting model that is relevant to its business environment, i.e., a model that incorporates the spiritual dimension, and not merely the economics, social, and environmental dimensions. The main aim of this study was to explore the spiritual dimension of the social and environmental reporting practices of a tourism company in Bali. The exploration was based on Tri Hita Karana, a local societal value held by the people of Bali. This study employed a two-phase research approach, where the first phase focused on exploring the social and environmental reporting practices of the company, while the second phase centered on refining and assessing the applicability of this reporting model in other companies. The results of this study show that the appropriate model of social and environmental accounting for Indonesian companies should consist of four dimensions: economic, environmental, social, and spiritual. Among these dimensions, the implementation of the spiritual dimension in social and environmental accounting faces the greatest challenges.

Abstract:
The university incubators have been constituted in the main Brazilian universities since the end of the 1990s. They work within the solidarity economy line, in the development of popular cooperatives and solidarity economy enterprises, and during this work, face several challenges. One of them is their capability to achieve contributions to the solidarity enteprises in their company dimension - a careful management to product quality or service, processes and operations to their greater efficiency, its insertion in the market and the best organization of its financial and non-financial resources; and their associative dimension - a management attentive to the importance of its social mission, the maintenance of its associative vitality, processes that makes democracy prevails and its rootedness in the community and its industry, in a cooperative manner. This study evaluated the development of a newly formed incubator in its first two years, at USP campus Ribeirao Preto, with focused analysis of its structure, staff, methodology and performance with the incubated enterprises, realizing that favor and challenging conditions of an incubation that actually contribute to both dimensions. The method used was the systematization of experiences, considered appropriate to construct the time line of the incubator, constitute major milestones and axes of the work and promote critical reflection of the facts and experiences raised. The results indicate that there were difficulties in integration between the company and associative dimensions in performance with the incubated groups, highlighting or with greater emphasis on one dimension or another over time, mainly due to the accumulations of the team with greater participation at that time. Moreover, the perception of the members of the incubator was evaluated through structured interviews, and indicated that some credited an approach focused in one dimension or the other because of the demands of the group at that time, others for which was the establishment and training of staff nearest to the work and because specific individuals of each group might require different approaches. Finally, it was concluded that the incubator has had positive and negative effects due to the difficulty in balancing both dimensions in the performed work, and with this information, the university incubators around the country may seek greater integration between them and thus achieve, through their work with solidarity enterprises, greater economic efficiency and human happiness.

From theoretical budgets on argumentation (Shiffrin, 1987; Wegman, 1994; Gryner, 2000; Gille, 2001) allied to studies which deal with opinative speeches (Shiffrin 1990; Shi-xu, 2000) and researches developed in the scope of evaluation (Labov, 1972; Linde, 1997; Martin, 1999, 2003), this study looks into the evaluative dimension of argumentation in opinative speech by professionals at a company in process of change. The study methodology takes into account the analysis of interviews given by four employees of the company towards their evaluation of the organization administrative group and of their own possibilities to act in this context. The data analysis found out the appearance of standards that identify the evaluation as an argumentative move, and unveiled as well the evaluative marks that pervasively occur in the argumentation structure of the opinion discourse by the informers of this research. The results also show that evaluation may assign opinion by the exchange of author and animator roles (Goffman, [1979] 2002, 1981), besides the possibility of being shaped in sustaining through inferential syllogism based on factual, hypothetical or fictive narratives (Oliveira, Bastos e Pereira, 2007).

Abstract:
Personality and brand factors were examined to determine if consumers of certain personality dimensions would be more favorable toward specific brand factors of three major sports media companies: Sports Illustrated, ESPN, and Fox Sports News. College-age sports news followers were tested to ascertain personality, brand evaluation, and media usage. Findings disclosed associations of personality dimension and brand preference, for example, “Agreeable” participants favored ESPN branding. Participants scoring low on “Extroversion” favored the Sports Illustrated brand. Other findings included an association between “Agreeableness” and TV; and frequent digital media users favored ESPN. Findings have implications for integrating personality research in marketing strategies that target college-age consumers.

In this work we study the following result: given a compact metric space X of dimension n, the subspace consisting of all embeddings of X into R2n is dense in the space of all continuous maps of X into R2n if and only if dim(X x X)<2n. The presented proof is the one given by J. Krasinkiewicz e por S. Spiez.

Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation of the subject of extra dimensions in particle physics. In recent years, there has been a large interest in this subject. In particular, a number of models have been suggested that provide solutions to some of the problem with the current Standard Model of particle physics. These models typically give rise to experimental signatures around the TeV energy scale, which means that they could be tested in the next generation of high-energy experiments, such as the LHC. Among the most important of these models are the universal extra dimensions model, the large extra dimensions model by Arkani-Hamed, Dimopolous, and Dvali, and models where right-handed neutrinos propagate in the extra dimensions. In the thesis, we study phenomenological aspects of these models, or simple modifications of them. In particular, we focus on Kaluza–Klein dark matter in universal extra dimensions models, different aspects of neutrino physics in higher dimensions, and collider phenomenology of extra dimensions. In addition, we consider consequences of the enhanced renormalization group running of physical parameters in higher-dimensional models.

Abstract:
Corporate Social Responsibility, or CSR, is a subject whereby enterprises execute their business with respect and responsibility towards the natural and the social environment, their own and their subcontractor’s labor and towards others whom it may concern. CSR is a phenomenon that is rapidly spreading and every day yet more enterprises and companies are joining the concept. One could claim that by performing CSR related work within the own enterprise the company’s brand could be improved and the consumers more satisfied, which in turn is good for business, and there are yet more long term reasons for an enterprise to perform CSR. For enterprises within the manufacturing industry or a service enterprise the CSR related work is more straightforward than the CSR performed within a public equity company, where CSR is translated into a more complex strategy. Ratos is a public equity company with headquarters in central Stockholm, Sweden. They have a great many holdings where the participation share is 60% or above. In some cases the participation share is 100%. How CSR is implemented in a company like Ratos is not clear, and therefore it is interesting to see how this type of work is performed within this company. Some even consider every single holding to be responsible for their own CSR strategy, and not a part of the investor's responsibility. Therefore CSR could be considered to be a less important subject for public equity companies. It’s a general belief that public equity companies don’t care much about how their holdings are doing business as long as they meet the goals for annual return on invested money. The purpose of this study is map out the CSR related work performed both within the public equity company Ratos, and the impact this have on their holdings CSR strategy. This mapping will be done by comparing the definition of CSR and the five dimensions this definitions holds against the collected data. This includes the economical responsibility, the responsibility towards the natural and the social environment, the stakeholder responsibility and the voluntary work performed. By comparing the five dimensions Dahlsrud, A. (2008) defines and the CSR initiatives by Ratos it could be proved that Ratos is executing a wide range CSR strategy. It could also be established that the CSR related work performed within Ratos is well documented, substantial and influenced by continuous improvement.

Mary, Rose. "Compact near-infrared 3-dimensional channel waveguide lasers." Thesis, Heriot-Watt University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10399/2911.

Abstract:
This thesis presents the development of ultrafast near-infrared (NIR) waveguide laser sources, through the fabrication of waveguides in Yb-doped bismuthate glass using ultrafast laser inscription (ULI). An integrated linear cavity waveguide laser is demonstrated in the glass with output powers of 163 mW and a slope efficiency of 79%. The laser performance is comparable to bulk systems while providing additional advantages in terms of low threshold ~35 mW and system compactness. The simultaneous achievement of low propagation losses and preservation of the fluorescence properties of Yb ions after the ULI process is key to the outstanding laser performance. Based on the current interest in ultrafast laser development using graphene as a saturable absorber (SA), a systematic study of nonlinear absorption in graphene is presented. The nonlinear optical characterisation of graphene at the wavelengths of 1 μm and 2 μm contributes to the experimental evidence for the wavelength independent absorption saturation in the material. Ultrashort pulse generation from the Yb-doped bismuthate waveguide laser is investigated using SAs based on semiconductor technology and carbon nanostructures. The quasi-monolithic waveguide laser, employing a graphene SA generated ~485 mW output power with a slope efficiency of 49%. The laser generated ~1 ps pulses in a Q-switched mode-locked regime, with the mode-locked pulses measuring a high repetition rate of 1.5 GHz. Ultrafast laser development is also investigated based on a novel evanescent-wave mode-locker device, fabricated by ULI. The device consists of an orthogonal waveguide with the right-angle positioned along its angled facet. The substrate is converted into a mode-locker by depositing carbon nanotube SA at the angled facet. Mode-locked operation is demonstrated by incorporating the substrate in an Er-doped ring laser, generating ~800 fs pulses at 26 MHz. Some preliminary work is done to replicate the device design in an active gain medium, namely, Yb-doped bismuthate glass, for the development of compact laser sources.

Deterministic chaos is the most interesting aspect with regard to the modern theory of dynamical systems, and is intrinsically associated with small changes in initial conditions of a given model. This paper is a study about the chaotic behavior in two specific cases. First, we study non compact pre-inflationary FRW models with a minimally coupled scalar field, and then anisotropic models of Bianchi IX. In both cases the material component is a perfect fluid. Such models have a cosmological constant and can be studied via a unified description using suitable transformations of variables. These systems have similar structures in phase space, called saddle-centers, which make the solutions to be contained in hypersurfaces whose topology is cylindrical. These structures dominate the relationship between collapse and escape to inflation, which can be treated as basins whose boundary can be fractal, and can be associated with a structure called a strange repeller. Using the boxcounting method, which involves methods and algorithms for numerical computation, we calculate the characteristic dimension of their sets. This method allows to study the chaotic escape to inflation.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this chapter, the educational gradient in access to different organizational work-family policies is examined using unique multilevel survey data from the European Sustainable Workforce Survey covering nine European countries. A total of six different work-family policies are studied, representing working-time arrangements, leaves, and services. By combining information provided by the organization, the direct supervisor, and the employee we show that for all policies, access reported by employees is substantially lower than provision reported by the team managers, which in turn is lower than the provision reported by the HR managers. This points to complex processes in the distribution of information in organizations. Moreover, at the organizational as well as the employee level, higher skilled employees have more access to working-time arrangements. We conclude that the skill gaps in the access to organizational work-family policies identified in this chapter form an important dimension of social inequality in today’s labor market.

Abstract The maturity of organizations is measured with process assessment models like the ISO/IEC 33001. The product quality is aligned with internal and external product quality charactersitics based on models like the ISO/IEC 25010. With the shift from the Tailorism-driven process orientation to a more people centric organization, the two dimensions process and product quality have to be extened by the people or team quality dimension. The presented approach offers aspects for agile Team Work Quality (aTWQ), as well as related measurement indicators. The approach is evaluated in the large enterprise context of the Volkswagen AG. The indicators of aTWQ have been integrated and established in the agile tool box for a sustainable agile transition of the company.

In ASME 2013 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. Abstract:
Fault tree analysis (FTA) is an effective method of ensuring the security and safety of the product by identifying all the possible causes of the problem and fixing them. However, it is not easy for a designer to construct a complete fault tree about various physical phenomena without any misunderstanding or oversight, and some computerized method of managing (i.e., storing, searching and utilizing) knowledge about FTA is needed. To solve the problem, the authors have proposed and studied a method and software tool for knowledge management of FTA based on quantity dimension indexing as a design knowledge management method to avoid ambiguity of literal expression about physical phenomena. In the previous method and software, however, fault values of quantities were limited as just above- and below-normal, and dynamic phenomena such as oscillation could not be described. In this paper, the authors introduce a systematically classified definition of fault values as above/below normal, one-side/both-sides, constant/varying, monotonic/non-monotonic and sudden/gradual, and expand the computerized systematic approach to FTA. Feasibility of the method was examined by applying it to fault tree examples made in a company.

Abstract:
In this paper, the authors propose computerized support for fault tree analysis (FTA) based on a new design knowledge management approach called quantity dimension indexing. FTA is a method of analyzing and visualizing the causes of fault events by expanding a fault event hierarchically to its possible cause events and constructing a tree diagram representing the entire structure of the problem. When a designer finds or encounters a problem during a product design and development process, an effective way of ensuring the security and safety of the product is to identify all the possible causes of the problem by FTA and fix them. Although FTA is an effective method, it is not easy for a designer to construct a complete fault tree without any misunderstanding or oversight. A promising approach for supporting FTA is to utilize a computerized knowledge management method. Although many knowledge management techniques for literal expression have been developed, they are not necessarily suitable for managing the engineering design knowledge of physical phenomena. To solve this problem, the authors propose a new design knowledge management approach called quantity dimension indexing and computerized support for FTA such as the verification of consistency of a fault tree and fault tree construction advice. By analyzing fault tree examples based on actual design activities in a company, the possible feasibility and future promise of the proposed approach are indicated.

Abstract:
Abstract The most important problem, causing defective parts, in the injection molding process, is nonuniform shrinkage of molded parts. This leads to an iterative trial-and-error cycles of modification of mold cavity and core to arrive at the right dimensional size required which can occasionally to complete retooling. For this process, there are many factors that can be thrown out of control. Using the traditional scientific approach, engineers have longed to understand the mechanics of the process to control it, with limited success. In this paper, a design of experiments setup, using the Taguchi Methods, was done to reduce the nonuniform shrinkage. The company where the experiment was carried out is a precision parts molder for their own product lines. By using the internal experts from the company, a list of independent process parameters with no interactions which were thought the most responsible for dimensional size were listed. As there were 13 such parameters, it was decided to use the L27 orthogonal array. The optimum value that the company experts thought would produce the right part were used as the settings for the initial experiment. The 27 experiments were then performed, allowing sufficient time to let the machine stabilized between the experiments. The S/N ratio calculation for 27 experiments was explained. Next the calculations for the percentage that each parameter contributes to the dimension was determined. Finally, a confirmation experiment was performed to verify the results.

Abstract:
The proposed research project consists of the seismic rehabilitation of a 1930’s historic building situated in Stockton, California (Seismic Zone 4), using the 1997 Uniform Code for Building Conservation and the Federal Emergency Management Agency FEMA-356 guidelines. The 2-story building was originally built for the Southern Pacific Railroad Company and served as the Stockton Train Depot. The structure consists of un-reinforced brick masonry walls and flexible wood diaphragms. A three-dimension analytical model will be developed and a comparative study will be done for the two approaches. A detailed comparison of the FEMA-356 provisions and the 1997 Uniform Building Code for Conservation (UCBC-97) is performed to establish cost/benefit analyses of the proposed retrofit strategy. A comprehensive comparison of structural capacities of major load-carrying members will also be conducted. Based on the parametric results of this study, a performance-based design scheme will be proposed for retrofitting the existing building to meet the intended seismic performance in the event of major earthquake events.

Abstract:
Compared with the land-based nuclear power plant, the operating conditions of offshore nuclear power plant (ONPP) are much more complicated. For example, the barge-mounted platform malfunction, which is as important as the natural events and human events, should be considered in the plant safety analysis,. As a result, a two dimension operating condition coupled with barge and reactor status should be considered in the development of relevant power plant operating procedures. On the other hand, the beyond design basis hazards induced by the combination of unique and unanticipated external events of ONPP may lead to a blind area to both traditional and two dimension procedures mentioned above. Due to the insufficiency of existing operating condition and relevant procedures to tackle with the above events mentioned, an expanded operation strategy, namely the beyond design basis hazards and the extended ultimate response measures, is developed, Injecting sea water into reactor pressure vessel directly after primary system depressurized and venting the containment when necessary, formed the basis of ultimate response measure, which was proposed by Taiwan Power Company after Fukushima Accident. Considering the offshore and barge-mounted features, the ultimate response measure can be extended to include sea water injection into steam generator indirectly through secondary side passive residual heat removal lines and reactor cabin flooding by sea water through Kingston valves, to rebuild a newly, hierarchical one. Finally, the extended ultimate response measures, provided mainly for the plant command staff and operators, are analyzed utilizing thermal-hydraulic integral computer code preliminarily, to prove the effectiveness of the system configuration and operating strategy. It is concluded that injecting sea water into steam generator can remove the decay heat effectively, and the sensitivity study shows that operator intervention is good enough in accident mitigation.

Creus, Fernando Luis. "The Digital Transformation of the Knowledge Worker." In SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition. SPE, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.2118/205879-ms.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Technological advances unveil a dual reality in the oil and gas Industry. On one hand, the benefits of blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI), among others, has arrived to revolutionize the industry. On the other hand, industry professionals remain trapped in bureaucratic processes that undermine their performance. The diagnosis: knowledge workers, responsible for optimizing the recovery and economic performance of the fields, are the missing link in the digital transformation chain. They are suffering the digitalization of the status quo. This paper puts forward a broad digital transformation framework designed to increase the knowledge worker's productivity. Digital transformation is not just about the implementation and use of cutting-edge technologies. It is also the response to digital trends, and about adopting new processes and redesigning existing ones to compete effectively in an increasingly digital world. Prioritizing technology as the ultimate goal puts the business processes and the knowledge workers aside from the discussion. The key to this proposal is rethinking the business model according to the possibilities of new technologies based on a six-dimension scheme:Corporate strategy: It defines the long-term vision and investment criteria for value creation. Technology is an element within a business scheme that should not be analyzed in isolation.Digital strategy: Within the corporate strategy, what operational and strategic role does technology play? Should it only support the company's operation, or should it drive strategic reinvention?Culture: While digital transformation is the company's response to digital trends, culture is the muscle that provides (or not) the attributes required to succeed in this transformation endeavor. Innovation and creativity should be promoted as part of the company's DNA.Knowledge processes: A business model, built on new technologies, will necessarily impose new and automated practices. While the automation of physical processes is a fact, the automation of knowledge processes is the weakest link.Data governance: It defines the necessary conditions that guarantee the quality of the information and its strategic acquisition. Two elements are a must: the automation of processes, thereby avoiding arbitrariness in data management; and centralized databases, thereby eliminating data duplicity and criteria discrepancy.Data Science: At this point in the model, the company has efficient, automatic, and fast processes, assuring the quality and availability of the data from its conception to the final storage. Then, data scientists will have all the means, and a clear and aligned vision (corporate strategy) to extract meaningful insights for the business.

Abstract:
There is increasing evidence that wellbeing is unequally distributed across sociodemographicgroups in contemporary societies. However, less is known about thedivergence across social groups of trajectories of wellbeing across age groups. This issue is of great relevance in contexts characterised by changing populationstructures and growing imbalances across and within generations, and in whichensuring that everyone has the opportunity to have a happy and healthy life courseis a primary welfare goal. In this study, we investigate wellbeing trends in Franceand Switzerland across age, gender, and socioeconomic status groups. We use twohousehold surveys (the Sant´e et Itin´eraires Professionnels and the Swiss HouseholdPanel) to compare the unfolding inequalities in health and wellbeing across agegroups in two rich countries. We view wellbeing as multidimensional, followingthe literature highlighting the importance of considering different dimensions andmeasures of wellbeing. Thus, we investigate a number of outcomes, includingdifferent measures of physical and mental health, as well as of relational wellbeing, using a linear regression model and a linear probability model. Our findings showinteresting country and dimension-specific heterogeneities in the development ofhealth and wellbeing over age. While our results indicate that there are gender andeducational inequalities in both Switzerland and France, and that gender inequalitiesin mental health accumulate with age in both countries, we also find that educationalinequalities in health and wellbeing remain rather stable across age groups.

Abstract:
The performance of 26 PVT-Systems was analysed and compared in IEA-SHC Task 60. The systems are located in countries with different climatic conditions. The applications range from direct domestic hot water production and heating of public swimming pools to heat pump systems with PVT as the main heat source of the heat pump. The Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) determined for the different PVT solutions give the possibility to compare the systems despite their diversity. The goal was to show the potential of PVT collectors in different fields of application. The results show that the integration of PVT collectors in different kinds of well-dimensioned systems leads to competitive solutions, both from an energy and a financial perspective. Additionally the answers to a survey about control strategies for PVT systems, showing some main problems and possible solutions, are summarised.

Abstract:
Four different classroom observation instruments—from the Service Delivery Indicators, the Stallings Observation System, the Classroom Assessment Scoring System, and the Teach classroom observation instrument—were implemented in about 100 schools across four regions of Tanzania. The research design is such that various combinations of tools were administered to various combinations of teachers, so these data can be used to explore the commonalities and differences in the behaviors and practices captured by each tool, the internal properties of the tools (for example, how stable they are across enumerators, or how various indicators relate to one another), and how variables collected by the various tools compare to each other. Analysis shows that inter-rater reliability can be low, especially for some of the subjective ratings; principal components analysis suggests that lower-level constructs do not map neatly to predetermined higher-level ones and suggest that the data have only a few dimensions. Measures collected during teacher observations are associated with student test scores, but patterns differ for teachers with lower versus higher subject content knowledge.

More people than ever are living in cities, and in these cities, more and more people are living alone. Using the example of Vienna, this paper investigates the subjective well-being of single households in the city. Previous research has identified positive and negative aspects of living alone (e.g., increased freedom vs. missing social embeddedness). We compare single households with other household types using data from the Viennese Quality of Life Survey (1995–2018). In our analysis, we consider overall life satisfaction as well as selected dimensions of subjective wellbeing (i.e., housing, financial situation, main activity, family, social contacts, leisure time). Our findings show that the subjective well-being of single households in Vienna is high and quite stable over time. While single households are found to have lower life satisfaction than two-adult households, this result is mainly explained by singles reporting lower satisfaction with family life. Compared to households with children, singles are more satisfied with their financial situation, leisure time and housing, which helps to offset the negative consequences of missing family ties (in particular with regard to single parents).

Abstract:

Abstract:
We used eye tracking to measure visual attention to tobacco products and pro- and anti-tobacco advertisements (pro-ads and anti-ads) during a shopping task in a three-dimensional virtual convenience store. We used eye-tracking hardware to track the percentage of fixations (number of times the eye was essentially stationary; F) and dwell time (time spent looking at an object; DT) for several categories of objects and ads for 30 adult current cigarette smokers. We used Wald F-tests to compare fixations and dwell time across categories, adjusting comparisons of ads by the number of each type of ad. Overall, unadjusted for the number of each object, participants focused significantly greater attention on snacks and drinks and tobacco products than ads (all P<0.005). Adjusting for the number of each type of ad viewed, participants devoted significantly greater visual attention to pro-ads than anti-ads or ads unrelated to tobacco (P<0.001). Visual attention for anti-ads was significantly greater when the ads were placed on the store’s external walls or hung from the ceiling than when placed on the gas pump or floor (P<0.005). In a cluttered convenience store environment, anti-ads at the point of sale have to compete with many other stimuli. Restrictions on tobacco product displays and advertisements at the point of sale could reduce the stimuli that attract smokers’ attention away from anti-ads.
