Abstract:
Should the focus of a brand-extension strategy be on product-category related factors (e.g., the fit between the extension and the core product) or should consumers’ attention be drawn to characteristics of the company providing the extension (e.g., company size)? Examining this issue experimentally in Hong Kong and in the United States with samples of students and working professionals, we find that for U.S. consumers, perceived fit is much more important than company size; for Hong Kong consumers, company size does not matter for high fit extensions, but does matter for low fit extensions. We suggest the value of collectivism may explain the relative higher importance of corporate identity for East Asian consumers. East Asian consumers rely on companies as interdependent, collective societal entities to reduce the risk of a low fit extension, whereas U.S. consumers— as individualists— place higher importance on their own judgment regarding the product fit rather than cues such as company size.

Abstract:
A laboratory experiment examines factors affecting evaluations of proposed extensions from a core brand that has or has not already been extended into other product categories. Specifically, the perceived quality of the core brand and the number, success, and similarity of intervening brand extensions, by influencing perceptions of company credibility and product fit, are hypothesized to affect evaluations of proposed new extensions, as well as evaluations of the core brand itself. The findings indicate that evaluations of a proposed extension when there were intervening extensions differed from evaluations when there were no intervening extensions only when there was a significant disparity between the perceived quality of the intervening extension (as judged by its success or failure) and the perceived quality of the core brand. A successful intervening extension increased evaluations of a proposed extension only for an average quality core brand; an unsuccessful intervening extension decreased evaluations of a proposed extension only for a high quality core brand. Though a successful intervening extension also increased evaluations of an average quality core brand, an unsuccessful intervening extension did not decrease core brand evaluations regardless of the quality level of the core brand. The relative similarity of intervening extensions had little differential impact, but multiple intervening extensions had some different effects than a single intervening extension.

Abstract:
This case study illustrates the role of marketing instruments on the success of a vertical brand extension executed by a leading dairy company in Vietnam — Vinamilk. In 2011, the company launched a fortified liquid milk line as a step-down vertical brand extension from its previous and more premium line — 100% fresh milk. The key issue in the study is to understand how Vinamilk used marketing communication and distancing techniques (or differentiation tactics) to influence the performance of the vertical brand extension. The case findings show that despite quite serious cannibalization on the core brand, the vertical brand extension at Vinamilk was deemed a successful launch. The success was attributable to marketing communication that was rooted in profound consumer understanding — the right product offered to the right target at the right price supported with heavy consumer pull and trade push marketing. Vinamilk’s strong umbrella brand and wide distribution network also contributed to the successful launch. The most serious challenge was cannibalization on the previous premium product line — Vinamilk 100% fresh milk. As Vietnamese consumers grew wealthier and more sophisticated, non-reconstituted, fresh milk would likely become the biggest seller in the future, a sector Vinamilk could not afford to lose. Competition in this premium market was already heating up, requiring the company to strengthen this product line. For longer term strategy, Vinamilk had been forced to revisit its liquid milk product portfolio. A more clearly defined role for each product line along with effective differentiation would be required.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to show that high similarity between a parent brand and an extension category can have a detrimental effect on how a brand extension is perceived to perform on specific attributes. This happens because similarity influences the perceived positioning of a brand extension: lower similarity extensions can be perceived as “specialized” products, whereas high similarity extensions are perceived as “all-in-one” products not performing exceptionally well on any specific attribute. Design/methodology/approach The authors test the hypothesized effect through three experimental studies. The authors manipulate similarity both within subjects (Study 1a) and between subjects (Study 1b and Study 2). Further, the authors test the effect for specific attributes that are physical/concrete in nature (Study 1a and Study 1b) as well as attributes that are abstract/imagery-related in nature (Study 2). Findings High compared to low similarity improves perceptions of overall performance (i.e. performance across all attributes). But as expected, the authors also find that a high similarity brand extension is perceived to perform worse on the attribute on which a low similarity brand extension specializes, even when the parent brands of the extensions possess that attribute to the same extent. This perception of attribute performance carries on to influence brand extension purchase likelihood. Practical implications The degree of brand extension similarity has consequences for how brand extensions are perceived to be positioned in the marketplace. Although high similarity extensions receive positive evaluations, they might not be suitable when a company is trying to instil a perception of exceptional performance on a specific attribute. Originality/value The authors demonstrate a consequential exception to the marketing wisdom that brands should extend to similar categories. Although the degree of brand extension similarity has been repeatedly shown to have a positive effect on brand extension evaluation, the authors document a case when its effect is actually detrimental. This study’s focus on the dependent variable of perceived performance on specific attributes is novel in the brand extension literature.

Abstract:
The paper explores the role of brand equity when pricing hypothetical brand extensions. Companies tend to use different pricing techniques for their products, and their pricing decisions are based on many factors, including image and category fit of the product with the existing image and products of the company. Brand extensions are usually investigated from a consumer perspective, focusing on the extension attitude, however, it is essential to understand the corporate decision-making process regarding pricing. Exploring this matter using quantitative research methods, the study provides empirical evidence that companies that have invested heavily in marketing actions in the past and have built strong brand equity over-time, show flexibility in the mark-up during the cost decision-making process of a hypothetical brand extensions. Variations in mark-up percentages are also observed when there is a difference in image and category fit of the extension to the original brand. However, companies characterized by greater brand equity exhibited greater flexibility in the mark-up percentages, even for low fit extensions.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a case example to teach students how to estimate a companys sustainable growth by using an extension of the DuPont System of financial analysis on Coca-Cola Corporation. The DuPont system is based on a companys return on equity that is decomposed into three components: net profit margin, total asset turnover, and the equity multiplier. The extended DuPont system of financial analysis multiplies return on equity by the earnings retention rate to calculate sustainable growth. Sustainable growth is the highest level of growth in sales that a company can achieve using internally generated funds only.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction: Eliglustat is a novel oral substrate-reduction therapy in development for adults with Gaucher disease type 1 (GD1). This open-label Phase-3 trial (ENCORE, NCT00943111, Genzyme, a Sanofi company, Cambridge, MA), the largest randomized, controlled trial in GD1 to date, evaluated eliglustat and imiglucerase treatment in patients who had previously reached pre-specified therapeutic goals after ≥3 years of enzyme replacement therapy. We report efficacy data from the 12-month primary analysis period (PAP) and the first 12 months of the extension period in which all patients received eliglustat. Methods: Patients were randomized 2 to 1 eliglustat to imiglucerase. The primary efficacy endpoint was percent of patients remaining stable on a pre-specified composite of spleen, liver, hemoglobin, and platelet parameters. As this was a non-inferiority trial, efficacy analyses were performed on the per-protocol population (99 eliglustat and 47 imiglucerase patients). Results: Eliglustat was non-inferior to imiglucerase: after 12 months of treatment, 85% of eliglustat and 94% of imiglucerase patients maintained all 4 goals (lower bound of 95% CI of difference [-17.6%] within the pre-specified [-25%] non-inferiority margin). Of the 159 patients treated in this study, 145 (91%) completed 24 months of treatment. During the 12-month extension period, continued stability was seen in most patients in both groups. Among 99 of 106 patients who continued on eliglustat, stability was seen in spleen volume (96% of patients), hemoglobin (97%), platelet count (94%), and liver volume (96%). In 47 of 53 patients who received imiglucerase in the PAP and then eliglustat in the trial extension, continued stability was seen also in spleen volume (97% of patients), hemoglobin (100%), platelet count (90%), and liver volume (95%). Most adverse events were mild or moderate in severity. No new safety concerns have arisen after 24 months. Conclusions: Eliglustat was non-inferior to imiglucerase in maintaining stability after 12 months of treatment in patients previously stabilized on enzyme replacement therapy. In the 12-month trial extension, clinical stability was maintained in most patients who remained on eliglustat for 24 months and in most patients who switched from imiglucerase to eliglustat. This dissertation seeks to analyze and understand the process of identification and construction of professional identity from the perspective of rural extension workers, and the influence of public agricultural extension in this context. For this study are the concepts of identity, professional identity and organizational identification. The research is based on a case study scenario that has a public extension of the state of Santa Catarina. 22 interviews were conducted, 21 with extension officers based in rural municipalities distributed in eight regions of the state and a director of the extension o the organization studied. The analysis focuses on the experiential logic of identity extension, rural extension workers in identifying with the organization and job satisfaction. The results show the definition of three extension profiles: the company-oriented, self-focused and guided by an ideal, which have an undeniable consistency in its configuration, the result of a dual transaction, one between the individual and his past, and the other between the individual and the organization built through processes of socialization diverse and differentiated. It appears that there are several factors that influence the identification of rural extension workers with the company, which showed very high degree. It was also noted that the rural extension wants to be recognized internally by their performance and dedication as well as have effective career advancement prospects. Finally, the so-called identity crisis is not recognized by all respondents, and acquires different meanings. For some this may be the breakdown of traditional values and references hitherto accepted as guiding the lives of these professionals, which induces changes in the mental constructs associated with identity previously built.

Abstract:
One of the most important threats for many firms today, despite their nature of the operation, size and longevity, is insolvency. Existing empirical evidence has shown that in the past two decades, business failures have occurred at a higher rate than any time since the 1930s. Many business failure studies have been conducted over time using financial ratios as inputs and traditional statistical techniques. Some of these studies examined whether cash flow information improves the prediction of business failure. Most recently, researchers have employed discriminant analysis to perform business failure prediction. The recent changes in the world caused by unstable environments where many firms fail more than ever, there is increasing need to predict business failure. To this date, there have been limited previous studies conducted on failure prediction for UK firms. Even in other countries, there has been a small amount of research done in the field of firm failures. Therefore, this study investigates the extension of Altman’s (1968) original model in predicting the health of UK firms using discriminant analysis and performance ratios to test which ratios are statistically significant in predicting the health of the UK firms .a selected sample containing 90 failed and 1000 non failed on UK industrial firms from 2000 – 2013. The main purpose of this study is to contribute towards Altman’s (1968) original Z-score model by adding new variables (Cash flow ratio). The study found that cash flow, when combined with Altman’s original variables is highly significant in predicting the health of UK general firms. A J-UK model was developed to test the health of UK firms. When compared with the re-estimated the Altman’s original model in the UK context, the predictive power of the model was 82.9%, which is consistent with Taffler’s (1982) UK model. Furthermore, to test the predictive power of the model before, during and after the financial crisis periods; results show that J-UK model had a higher accuracy to predict the health of UK firms than the re-estimated Altman’s original model. Finally, the study proves that liquidity, profitability, leverage and capital turnover ratios are significant ratios in predicting failure. Liquidity and profitability have the highest contribution to the results of both re-estimated Altman’s original model and J-UK model. This study has implications for decision makers. Regulatory bodies and practitioners have to take into account the ratios, which contributed highest to the model in order to serve as early warning signals for corrective action.

Abstract:
Extension professionals must have easy access to and knowledge of emerging technologies to deliver programs more efficiently and effectively. With the increasing use of computer technology comes an increasing number of individuals who have computer anxiety. This study examined selected variables as predictors of computer anxiety. Data were collected from 402 Virginia Cooperative Extension field personnel. The personnel included Agricultural and Natural Resources agents, Family and Consumer Sciences agents, 4-H agents, technicians, and secretaries. A modified version of Oetting's 1983 Computer Anxiety Scale (COMPAS) was used to determine the computer anxiety levels. For this instrument, an internal consistency reliability of Cronbach's alpha r = .95 resulted from this study. The survey results were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The overall mean score for the respondents to this study was 101.68, on a 200 point scale, which was interpreted using the COMPAS manual to indicate that only 20% of the Virginia Cooperative Extension personnel were "anxious" or "very anxious." Regression analysis indicated that time per day using a computer, years with Extension, and age were the significant variables related to anxiety. Increased computer use reduced but did not entirely eliminate computer anxiety. A profile of a respondent who was relaxed about computer use included being age 20 to 29, a secretary, and using a computer more than two hours per day. A person anxious about computer use was middle aged (40 and over), a technician, and used the computer less than two hours per day. The results indicated that the more a respondent used the computer per day the less anxious they were. A large number of personnel used the computer to compile and produce educational material and to communicate with colleagues. The Virginia Cooperative Extension administration should direct their attention regarding computer training to respondents who are 40 years of age and older and are technicians. To reduce computer anxiety, personnel should be provided with in-service training emphasizing computer applications. Additional research could identify why technicians have higher levels of computer anxiety. Further study could identify other variables that may be related to computer anxiety.

We prove an analogue of the Hodge cohomology theorem for a certain class of non-compact manifolds. Specifically, let M be a compact manifold with boundary OM, and let g be a metric on Int(M). Assume that there exists a collar neighborhood of the boundary ... We then describe doubly weighted Sobolev spaces on M. For elements of these spaces the harmonic parts of w1 and w2 lie in one Sobolev space, while the non-harmonic parts of w1 and w2 lie in a differently defined Sobolev space. We prove that ... is Fredholm on almost all of these doubly weighted spaces, except for a finite number of values of w. This gives us an analogue of the Hodge decomposition theorem and leads to the result. This work generalizes earlier theorems of Atiyah, Patodi and Singer for b-metrics (case a = b = 0) and of Melrose for scattering metrics (case a = b = 1).

Abstract:
Reliability of equipment is indispensable for the uninterrupted operation of any oil & gas producing facility. Over a period of time, some oil wells producing sour crude were also added to the incoming feed of Gathering centres, which were originally designed for processing sweet crude. Most of the facilities were designed and installed prior to the publication of NACE MR 0175 and NACE TM 0284. As these facilities are still in operation under sour condition, it is prudent to take necessary measures in time for continuing safe operation of these facilities. In this paper, the authors share their experience in initial detection & online monitoring of service-induced damages to the equipments due to sour service using NDT techniques like Wet Fluorescent Magnetic Particle Inspection, manual ultrasonic testing and time of flight diffraction & Phased Array. The experience gathered during internal coating of the vessels has also been described. Several items of equipment continued in operation to maintain production even after the detection of Hydrogen induced cracking. Periodic monitoring and critical analysis of inspection data provided confidence to continue operation of equipment. This enabled the operating company to extract maximum life of the equipment without compromising on safety. This Paper focuses on two items of equipment, HP Gas Scrubber from Oil/Gas separation plant and HP Gas Discharge Cooler from CRU. Fitness for Service (FFS) evaluations were carried out for HP Scrubber and the Channel head component of HP Gas Discharge cooler. The analysis was based upon the latest UT scan results and guidelines prescribed in API 579-1/ASME FFS-1. These items of equipment were found not fit for further service. In the interim period, the company procured new scrubber and channel head of the cooler for replacement thus minimizing the shutdown period.

Abstract:
The methodology for Reliability-Based Design and Assessment (RBDA) of an ageing fixed steel offshore structure was established to support detailed re-assessment applied to the management of the structure’s safety, integrity analysis and reliability by evaluating the loading acting on the structure. It is a tool for the high-end analysis of the structure for risk-based design assessment and has been succesfully implemented in the North Sea under Shell operating company. The main purposes of RBDA are to manage a structure’s risk level over its remaining service life and to initiate the cost-efficient inspection or mitigation actions (if required). This method consists of Type I and II uncertainties used to determine the probability of failure for the structure over its remaining service life. However, limited work has been done so far on its application at many different regions, particularly in the South East Asia. Therefore, this paper investigates the robustness of the RBDA methodology applied to fixed offshore structures at shallow waters of Malaysia by considering the native environmental criteria, local authorities’ obligation and company requirements. It is shown that this procedure can efficiently assist in understanding the structure’s failure mechanism and correctly define the relevant type of mitigations required.

Abstract:
In this paper, a knowledge-based information system for the plant operation of steel making company has been proposed. This system, which is named as K-VRS (Knowledge-based Virtual Reality System), provides a connection between ERP PM module and knowledge-based engineering methodologies, and thus, enables network-based highly effective PM process. While the virtual plant is used for the master of K-VRS, there are four expert modules attached; engineering document management module, real time lifetime estimation module, fitness for service module and risk-based inspection module. Each module provides engineering knowledge based evaluation and judgment for more effective PM. K-VRS provides collaborative and concurrent working environment to workers and relevant experts. The developed system is expected to play a great role for plant life extension.

Abstract:
The professionals across the Oil & Gas industry have strived to combat the adverse effects of Hydrogen Sulphide and maintain the integrity of vital facilities. The detrimental effects of Hydrogen Sulphide on process equipment has remained as one of the prime subject of research in Oil & Gas Industry, fostering the advancement of inspection philosophies and necessitating adoption of appropriate mitigating measures. The challenge of Integrity Management increases with the ageing of equipment and increased influx of sour media. This paper discusses: • The change in operating environment — from non sour to sour. • The actions taken to protect the equipment in the changed operating environment. • Consequent changes in the inspection strategies and techniques to detect material degradation. • Material protection methodologies deployed to manage the age old facilities for safe operation. This paper gives an insight into the various methodologies adopted in KOC to address asset/plant life extension issues of an operating company to tackle the challenges caused by the changed composition of fluids handled. The paper illustrates adoption of appropriate inspection strategies, application of effective internal coating systems, periodic online monitoring of the pressure vessels to improve confidence level with respect to integrity of the vessels without necessitating major changes in the facilities.

Abstract:
Every new design, project, or procedure within a company generates a considerable amount of new information and important knowledge. Furthermore, a tremendous amount of legacy knowledge already exists in companies in electronic and non-electronic formats, and techniques are needed for representing, structuring and reusing this knowledge. Many researchers have spent considerable time and effort developing semantic knowledge management systems, which in theory are presumed to address these problems. Despite significant research investments, little has been done to implement these systems within an industrial setting. In this paper we identify five main requirements to the development of an industry-ready application of semantic knowledge management systems and discuss how each of these can be addressed. These requirements include the ease of new knowledge management software adoption, the incorporation of legacy information, the ease of use of the user interface, the security of the stored information, and the robustness of the software to support multiple file types and allow for the sharing of information across platforms. Collaboration with Raytheon, a defense and aerospace systems company, allowed our team to develop and demonstrate a successful adoption of semantic abilities by a commercial company. Salient features of this work include a new tool, the e-Design MemoExtractor Software Tool, designed to mine and capture company information, a Raytheon-specific extension to the e-Design Framework, and a novel semantic environment in the form of a customized semantic wiki SMW+. The advantages of this approach are discussed in the context of the industrial case study with Raytheon.

Abstract:
The thermal stress and pressure stress caused by mixing of cold and hot water on a tee junction of piping system in reactor cooling systems of nuclear power plants are the potential place to crack pipe. These stresses are generated due to temperature distribution unevenly in regions where hot and cold flows are intensively mixed together. As operating plants become older and life time extension activities are initiated, operators need screening criteria to exclude risks of pipe cracking. The Kuosheng boiling water reactor (BWR) units 1 and 2, owned by Taiwan Power Company (TPC), started commercial operations in 1981 and 1983, respectively. The purpose of this paper is to assess the Von Mises stresses and deformation of tee piping in Kuosheng’s RHR system by the Fluid Solid Interaction (FSI) simulation. Furthermore, the simulation result compare with the experiment result during the fourth refueling outage per decade in 2014. The temperature and the stress of monitor points established by experiment are all located in the range between maximum and minimum of the experiment result.

Abstract:
Testing components, prototypes and products comprise essential, but time consuming activities throughout the product development process particularly for complex iteratively designed products. To reduce product development time, testing and design processes are often overlapped. A key research question is how this overlapping can be planned and managed to minimise risks and costs. The first part of this research study investigates how a case study company plans testing and design processes and how they manage these overlaps. The second part of the study proposes a significant modification to the existing process configuration for design and testing, which explicitly identifies virtual testing, that is an extension to Computer Aided Engineering which mirrors the testing process through product modelling and simulation, as a distinct and significant activity used to (a) enhance and (b) replace some physical tests. The analysis shows how virtual testing can mediate information flows between overlapping (re)design and physical tests. The effects of virtual testing to support overlap of test and (re)design is analysed for the development phases of diesel engine design at a case study company. We assess the costs and risks of overlaps and their amelioration through targeted virtual testing. Finally, using the analysis of the complex interactions between (re)design, physical and virtual testing, and the scope for replacing physical with virtual testing is examined.

Full text
Abstract:
The rapid growth in population and related demand for travel during the past few decades has had a catalytic effect on traffic congestion, air quality, and safety in many urban areas. Transportation managers and planners have planned for new facilities to cater to the needs of users of alternative modes of transportation (e.g., public transportation, walking, and bicycling) over the next decade. However, there are no widely accepted methods, nor there is enough evidence to justify whether such plans are instrumental in improving mobility of the transportation system. Therefore, this project researches the operational performance of urban roads with heterogeneous traffic conditions to improve the mobility and reliability of people and goods. A 4-mile stretch of the Blue Line light rail transit (LRT) extension, which connects Old Concord Rd and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s main campus on N Tryon St in Charlotte, North Carolina, was considered for travel time reliability analysis. The influence of crosswalks, sidewalks, trails, greenways, on-street bicycle lanes, bus/LRT routes and stops/stations, and street network characteristics on travel time reliability were comprehensively considered from a multimodal perspective. Likewise, a 2.5-mile-long section of the Blue Line LRT extension, which connects University City Blvd and Mallard Creek Church Rd on N Tryon St in Charlotte, North Carolina, was considered for simulation-based operational analysis. Vissim traffic simulation software was used to compute and compare delay, queue length, and maximum queue length at nine intersections to evaluate the influence of vehicles, LRT, pedestrians, and bicyclists, individually and/or combined. The statistical significance of variations in travel time reliability were particularly less in the case of links on N Tryon St with the Blue Line LRT extension. However, a decrease in travel time reliability on some links was observed on the parallel route (I-85) and cross-streets. While a decrease in vehicle delay on northbound and southbound approaches of N Tryon St was observed in most cases after the LRT is in operation, the cross-streets of N Tryon St incurred a relatively higher increase in delay after the LRT is in operation. The current pedestrian and bicycling activity levels seemed insignificant to have an influence on vehicle delay at intersections. The methodological approaches from this research can be used to assess the performance of a transportation facility and identify remedial solutions from a multimodal perspective.

Groeneveld, Andrew B., Stephanie G. Wood, and Edgardo Ruiz. Estimating Bridge Reliability by Using Bayesian Networks. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/39601.

Full text
Abstract:
As part of an inspection, bridge inspectors assign condition ratings to the main components of a bridge’s structural system and identify any defects that they observe. Condition ratings are necessarily somewhat subjective, as they are influenced by the experience of the inspectors. In the current work, procedures were developed for making inferences on the reliability of reinforced concrete girders with defects at both the cross section and the girder level. The Bayesian network (BN) tools constructed in this work use simple structural m echanics to model the capacity of girders. By using expert elicitation, defects observed during inspection are correlated with underlying deterioration mechanisms. By linking these deterioration mechanisms with reductions in mechanical properties, inferences on the reliability of a bridge can be made based on visual observation of defects. With more development, this BN tool can be used to compare conditions of bridges relative to one another and aid in the prioritization of repairs. However, an extensive survey of bridges affected by deterioration mechanisms is needed to confidently establish valid relationships between deterioration severity and mechanical properties.

McCarthy, Noel, Eileen Taylor, Martin Maiden, Alison Cody, Melissa Jansen van Rensburg, Margaret Varga, Sophie Hedges, et al. Enhanced molecular-based (MLST/whole genome) surveillance and source attribution of Campylobacter infections in the UK. Food Standards Agency, July 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.ksj135.

Full text
Abstract:
This human campylobacteriosis sentinel surveillance project was based at two sites in Oxfordshire and North East England chosen (i) to be representative of the English population on the Office for National Statistics urban-rural classification and (ii) to provide continuity with genetic surveillance started in Oxfordshire in October 2003. Between October 2015 and September 2018 epidemiological questionnaires and genome sequencing of isolates from human cases was accompanied by sampling and genome sequencing of isolates from possible food animal sources. The principal aim was to estimate the contributions of the main sources of human infection and to identify any changes over time. An extension to the project focussed on antimicrobial resistance in study isolates and older archived isolates. These older isolates were from earlier years at the Oxfordshire site and the earliest available coherent set of isolates from the national archive at Public Health England (1997/8). The aim of this additional work was to analyse the emergence of the antimicrobial resistance that is now present among human isolates and to describe and compare antimicrobial resistance in recent food animal isolates. Having identified the presence of bias in population genetic attribution, and that this was not addressed in the published literature, this study developed an approach to adjust for bias in population genetic attribution, and an alternative approach to attribution using sentinel types. Using these approaches the study estimated that approximately 70% of Campylobacter jejuni and just under 50% of C. coli infection in our sample was linked to the chicken source and that this was relatively stable over time. Ruminants were identified as the second most common source for C. jejuni and the most common for C. coli where there was also some evidence for pig as a source although less common than ruminant or chicken. These genomic attributions of themselves make no inference on routes of transmission. However, those infected with isolates genetically typical of chicken origin were substantially more likely to have eaten chicken than those infected with ruminant types. Consumption of lamb’s liver was very strongly associated with infection by a strain genetically typical of a ruminant source. These findings support consumption of these foods as being important in the transmission of these infections and highlight a potentially important role for lamb’s liver consumption as a source of Campylobacter infection. Antimicrobial resistance was predicted from genomic data using a pipeline validated by Public Health England and using BIGSdb software. In C. jejuni this showed a nine-fold increase in resistance to fluoroquinolones from 1997 to 2018. Tetracycline resistance was also common, with higher initial resistance (1997) and less substantial change over time. Resistance to aminoglycosides or macrolides remained low in human cases across all time periods. Among C. jejuni food animal isolates, fluoroquinolone resistance was common among isolates from chicken and substantially less common among ruminants, ducks or pigs. Tetracycline resistance was common across chicken, duck and pig but lower among ruminant origin isolates. In C. coli resistance to all four antimicrobial classes rose from low levels in 1997. The fluoroquinolone rise appears to have levelled off earlier and among animals, levels are high in duck as well as chicken isolates, although based on small sample sizes, macrolide and aminoglycoside resistance, was substantially higher than for C. jejuni among humans and highest among pig origin isolates. Tetracycline resistance is high in isolates from pigs and the very small sample from ducks. Antibiotic use following diagnosis was relatively high (43.4%) among respondents in the human surveillance study. Moreover, it varied substantially across sites and was highest among non-elderly adults compared to older adults or children suggesting opportunities for improved antimicrobial stewardship. The study also found evidence for stable lineages over time across human and source animal species as well as some tighter genomic clusters that may represent outbreaks. The genomic dataset will allow extensive further work beyond the specific goals of the study. This has been made accessible on the web, with access supported by data visualisation tools.

Cooper, Christopher, Jacob McDonald, and Eric Starkey. Wadeable stream habitat monitoring at Congaree National Park: 2018 baseline report. National Park Service, June 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/nrr-2286621.

Full text
Abstract:
The Southeast Coast Network (SECN) Wadeable Stream Habitat Monitoring Protocol collects data to give park resource managers insight into the status of and trends in stream and near-channel habitat conditions (McDonald et al. 2018a). Wadeable stream monitoring is currently implemented at the five SECN inland parks with wadeable streams. These parks include Horseshoe Bend National Military Park (HOBE), Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park (KEMO), Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park (OCMU), Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CHAT), and Congaree National Park (CONG). Streams at Congaree National Park chosen for monitoring were specifically targeted for management interest (e.g., upstream development and land use change, visitor use of streams as canoe trails, and potential social walking trail erosion) or to provide a context for similar-sized stream(s) within the park or network (McDonald and Starkey 2018a). The objectives of the SECN wadeable stream habitat monitoring protocol are to: Determine status of upstream watershed characteristics (basin morphology) and trends in land cover that may affect stream habitat, Determine the status of and trends in benthic and near-channel habitat in selected wadeable stream reaches (e.g., bed sediment, geomorphic channel units, and large woody debris), Determine the status of and trends in cross-sectional morphology, longitudinal gradient, and sinuosity of selected wadeable stream reaches. Between June 11 and 14, 2018, data were collected at Congaree National Park to characterize the in-stream and near-channel habitat within stream reaches on Cedar Creek (CONG001, CONG002, and CONG003) and McKenzie Creek (CONG004). These data, along with the analysis of remotely sensed geographic information system (GIS) data, are presented in this report to describe and compare the watershed-, reach-, and transect-scale characteristics of these four stream reaches to each other and to selected similar-sized stream reaches at Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, and Chattahoochee National Recreation Area. Surveyed stream reaches at Congaree NP were compared to those previously surveyed in other parks in order to provide regional context and aid in interpretation of results. edar Creek’s watershed (CONG001, CONG002, and CONG003) drains nearly 200 square kilometers (77.22 square miles [mi2]) of the Congaree River Valley Terrace complex and upper Coastal Plain to the north of the park (Shelley 2007a, 2007b). Cedar Creek’s watershed has low slope and is covered mainly by forests and grasslands. Cedar Creek is designated an “Outstanding Resource Water” by the state of South Carolina (S.C. Code Regs. 61–68 [2014] and S.C. Code Regs. 61–69 [2012]) from the boundary of the park downstream to Wise Lake. Cedar Creek ‘upstream’ (CONG001) is located just downstream (south) of the park’s Bannister Bridge canoe landing, which is located off Old Bluff Road and south of the confluence with Meyers Creek. Cedar Creek ‘middle’ and Cedar Creek ‘downstream’ (CONG002 and CONG003, respectively) are located downstream of Cedar Creek ‘upstream’ where Cedar Creek flows into the relatively flat backswamp of the Congaree River flood plain. Based on the geomorphic and land cover characteristics of the watershed, monitored reaches on Cedar Creek are likely to flood often and drain slowly. Flooding is more likely at Cedar Creek ‘middle’ and Cedar Creek ‘downstream’ than at Cedar Creek ‘upstream.’ This is due to the higher (relative to CONG001) connectivity between the channels of the lower reaches and their out-of-channel areas. Based on bed sediment characteristics, the heterogeneity of geomorphic channel units (GCUs) within each reach, and the abundance of large woody debris (LWD), in-stream habitat within each of the surveyed reaches on Cedar Creek (CONG001–003) was classified as ‘fair to good.’ Although, there is extensive evidence of animal activity...
