Abstract:
Examining the perception of literary decline in Greek, Latin, Arabic, and Persian, this study unearths an enduring taboo, one little changed by place and time, against verbal creation too readily sacrificing “nature” and “truth” to artifice and phantasy. The fading of the taboo after the nineteenth century, when “Decadent” yields to a non-normative name for the present (“Modern”), is without precedent. Demonstrating the opprobrium’s enduring nature, this study compares for the first time four literary traditions’ confrontations with a “Decadence” whose similarities have been conjectured since

The neuromuscular junction (NMJ), the synapse formed between lower motor neuron and skeletal muscle fibre, is known to be a target in a number of neurodegenerative conditions, including motor neuron disease (MND). Located in an accessible part of the peripheral nervous system, the NMJ can be used as a ‘model synapse’ in the context of ‘connectomics’ – the study of synaptic connectivity throughout the nervous system as a whole. Although the NMJ has been studied in a number of species, relatively little is known about its structure in humans, complicating the translation of animal models of dise

Abstract:
Hyolingual biomechanics and kinematics in three species of two odontocete genera were investigated to compare adaptations and performance of divergent feeding strategies. Ram and suction feeding are two ends of a continuous spectrum that is poorly-studied in odontocetes. Comparative anatomy identified characters associated with feeding patterns of morphologically dissimilar and evolutionary distant genera. Hyolingual investigations included measurements of hyolingual muscle vectors and hyoid surface area/robustness. ANOVA's revealed Kogia basihyal and thyrohyal surface areas were significantl

Abstract:
I compared Japanese quail Coturnix japonica, and Ring doves Streptopelia risoria, in the development of thyrotropin (TSH) influence on thyroid hormone (TH) content in the thyroid gland (TG) and the serum, and on TG-cAMP content. In embryos, pituitary gland (PG)-TSH content was measured by an avian bioassay system. Adult quail and doves were studied for comparability of thyroid gland function when receiving comparable dietary iodine. Also, thyroid function in adult doves was compared with different iodine intake. In embryonic quail, there is considerable maturation of thyroid function prior t

In eutherian mammals, the size of the testes and number of spermatozoa produced and stored in the excurrent ducts vary widely between species, with the hydromyine rodents of Australia exhibiting a greater range of interspecific variation than any other closely related group of species. This study compared the efficiency of germ cell production and sperm storage capacity in the extra-testicular ducts of two arid zone species, the plains rat, Pseudomys australis, and the spinifex hopping mouse, Notomys alexis, t
