Abstract:
This study aims to analyze and verify the bilingual corpus used in the Korean-Chinese contrastive analysis. To this end, Chapter 2 describes the problems of the corpus construction and corpus used in contrastive linguistics. Chapter 3 analyzes the characteristics of the two kinds of the bilingual corpus - parallel corpus and comparative corpus used in Korean-Chinese contrastive analysis. In Chapter 4, in order to examine the validity of the parallel corpus used in the Korean-Chinese uni-direction contrastive study: the corpora used in five different studies on the Korean particle ‘e(에)’ and ‘eseo(에서)’ and their correspondences in Chinese were compared, and the results of the study were compared. As a result, the corpora used in these five papers were different, and the research results for the study subjects were different, which proved the effect of parallel corpus structure in contrastive studies. Furthermore, we conducted a replica study focusing on the comparative study of Korean-Chinese suffixes. Focusing on the large difference in corpus size between the Korean and Chinese sub-corpora of the comparative corpus, we resized the Korean sub-corpus and conducted a replica study on the suffix. As a result of increasing the Korean corpus size, it was confirmed that the study results on the Korean suffix significantly depend on the corpus size. In summary, it is vital to apply strict standards for representativeness, balance, and size in constructing parallel and comparative corpus in contrastive linguistics studies.

Abstract:
The article focuses on contemporary trends in contrastive studies. As a point of departure the nature, history and evolution of contrastive linguistics are examined. Contrastive linguistics is viewed in relation to other disciplines such as comparative linguistics, comparative historical linguistics, linguistic typology, theory of translation, and foreign language teaching. Any aspect of language may be covered in cross-linguistic studies which involve a systematic comparison of two or more languages both at micro-linguistic and macro-linguistic level. The current trends are identified in terms of macro-linguistic widening of contrastive analysis which is applied in studies of specialized discourses such as media, political and academic communication. The findings are based on a small-scale research of contrastive studies published in Contrastive Linguistics, the oldest international journal for contrastive linguistics. By conducting quantitative and qualitative analysis and employing a diachronic approach conclusions are drawn about the need for the contrastive approach at macro-level, the type of linguistic phenomena studied and the preferred methods of contrastive analysis within a period of forty-six years. The findings show that there is only a slight increase in macro-linguistic analyses in recent years, but contrastive analysis remains a vibrant area of research with a potential for development at discourse level in particular and implications for intercultural understanding and tolerance.

Abstract:
Since its introduction in 1996, Contrastive Interlanguage Analysis (CIA) has become a highly popular method in Learner Corpus Research. Its comparative design has made it possible to uncover a wide range of features distinctive of learner language and assess their degree of generalizability across learner populations. At the same time, however, the method has drawn criticism on several fronts. The purpose of this article is threefold: to provide a brief overview of CIA research, to discuss the main criticisms the method has faced in recent years and to present a revised model, CIA², which makes the central role played by variation in interlanguage studies more explicit and is generally more in line with the current state of foreign language theory and practice.

Abstract:
In the last few decades, a scientific field known as computational linguistics has been actively developing. The paper discusses the main task of corpus linguistics – corpus analysis of written natural-language texts with the help of linguistic resources that are used to solve it. Corpus analysis refers to a method of language research that utilizes large collections of texts or corpora to obtain statistical and linguistic data about the language. Linguistic resources such as dictionaries, thesauri, and grammatical databases greatly enhance the capability and accuracy of corpus analysis. In addition, corpus linguistics deals with the building of corpus managers that process texts, perform concordance, search for keywords and collocations, etc. The paper briefly describes the functionality of WMatrix, WordSmith, GATE, AntConc and Sketch Engine programs and makes a comparative-contrastive analysis of their characteristics. It is concluded that the programs differ in feature set, data saving parameters, input text format and accessibility. In addition, directions for their use in research and practice are suggested. Linguistic resources can be useful for stylistic analysis of texts, studying linguistic features of author's style, teaching a foreign language, for example, grammar or vocabulary, in computer lexicography, discourse analysis and other directions. The example of the corpus analysis of the topic famine during the blockade of Leningrad with the help of the AntConc program is given. In the course of the mentioned research, 749 fragments of memories of Leningrad citizens were collected on the basis of 15 frequency words and a frequency dictionary of 158 words was compiled. Considered tools not only increase the accuracy of analysis, but also expand the possibilities and integrate into software tools for automation of corpus analysis. The choice of the appropriate tool for the study depends on the scope and depth of text analysis.

[Rev. of: Gradinarova Alla A., Essays on the Comparative Syntax of Bulgarian and Russian, Sofia: Iztok-Zapad, 2017, 500 pp.] This article presents a review of the book by a major Bulgarian researcher of Russian, professor of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” Alla Gradinarova, whose scholarly interests focus mainly on the contrastive syntax of Bulgarian and Russian. In the new monograph, the author concentrates largely on the points of divergence in these languages stemming from their typological differences: passive voice and syntactic impersonality, word order, communicatively marked phrasal templates, various types of multi-clause structures ranging from verbal adverb phrases to complex and asyndetic sentences, etc. The contrastive analysis of the language data helps to reveal significant characteristics of the studied phenomena. This allows the use of the obtained results and data not only in typology and contrastive linguistics, but also in the study of the Russian language, as the approach of the author in her studies is based on a profound analysis of Russian data. The book constitutes a major contribution to studies in contrastive syntax of Slavic languages.

Abstract:
This article deals with a set of problems related to the linguistic analysis of text. In particular, it discusses the criteria of such analysis, the texts that are the object of such analysis (recently, non-fiction texts have been increasingly used as such), its practical application, and the target groups for which it is intended. While the analysis of a text on the material of one language is quite well developed, the comparative description of texts on the material of different languages is insufficiently studied, which determines the relevance of this study. The model of contrastive analysis of media texts in Russian and English was first proposed by A.D. Schweitzer. The article raises the question to what extent this model can be used for the comparative study of texts of other functional affiliation. But the functional homogeneity of the text cannot ensure the accuracy and quality of the comparison, so it is necessary to limit the object of analysis more specifically, defining its status as a specific type of text. For this purpose, it is necessary to make some clarifications to the existing ideas about the so-called utilitarian, consumer or special texts, which have not yet received an unambiguous interpretation. In addition to Schweitzer’s model for analysis texts, other variants have also been developed in linguistics, focused mainly on scientific texts (J. Gennet, E.M. Krizhanovskaya, V.E. Chernyavskaya, S.T. Nefedov). Although these models were not originally designed for comparative analysis, they may well be used for this purpose. In conclusion, the author’s model of contrastive analysis of consumer texts is presented and the possibilities of its practical application are highlighted.

Abstract:
The comparative study aimed to describe the characteristics of Chinese and Indonesian nominal sentences. The research contributed to teaching Chinese as a second language and the field of translation as well. Chinese was being studied all over the world, and Indonesia was no exception. Nevertheless, contrastive analysis between Chinese and Indonesian in the field of syntax were still limited. Nominal sentences are one of the classifications of sentences based on the predicate form. Accordingly, Chinese and Indonesian nominal sentences have similar definitions but differed in the words or phrases that form the predicate. The data in the contrastive analysis study were Chinese and Indonesian nominal sentences from short stories, novels, other literary works, and examples of related grammatical works. The data were analyzed using the James procedure and the contrastive analysis method with four steps described by Di Pietro. The finding of the contrastive analysis indicates that in both languages, nominal sentence usage is limited under certain conditions; some Chinese nominal sentences will become verb sentences when translated into Indonesian. Also, Chinese and Indonesian nominal sentences differ in their negative forms. The error analysis indicates that Indonesian students still lack knowledge of Chinese nominal sentences and characteristics.

Abstract:
After receiving enthusiastic support during the 1960s and 1970s, the program of ‘Contrastive linguistics’ led a somewhat modest, if not marginal, existence during the two subsequent decades. The main reason for the apparent failure of this program was, of course, that the high hopes seen in its potential for making foreign language teaching more efficient were disappointed. Empirical work on the process of L2-acquisition from different native languages as starting points showed that contrastive linguistics cannot simply be equated with a theory of foreign language acquisition. A second problem was that a central aspect of the contrastive program, i.e. the writing of comprehensive contrastive grammars for language pairs, was hardly ever properly implemented. Finally, there was the problem of finding a place for contrastive linguistics within the spectrum of language comparison, relative to other comparative approaches to linguistic analysis. It is the third of these issues that is addressed by the present article. It will be shown that only by relating contrastive linguistics to other subfields of comparative linguistics and by delimiting it from them will we obtain a clear picture of its agenda, its potential and its limits.

Similarities between French, Arabic, and English themic lead news stories at the clausal and textual levels suggest that there may be a fundamental principle underlying how the mind organizes language. The results may be applied to the creation of translation software that is faithful to source texts at the sentential and global levels or used in teaching in a second language classroom.

This study investigated the relative clause formation and the coding of tense in the English interlanguage of thirty-two Palestinian students at the six colleges of the Islamic University of Gaza.Three composition topics were designed to elicit the learners' expression of the various English tenses and relative clauses.Findings: The data show that Palestinian learners' switching of tense results from using English morphology to express an aspectual system similar to that of Palestinian Arabic. The English past tense and present tense are used to mark Palestinian perfective and imperfective aspects, respectively. The subject-verb agreement marker and the concord markers 's/is and 'm/am are omitted in relative clauses and when there is a change in aspect.In the area of relative clauses, the data show that relative clauses are ninety percent independent of the Palestinian Arabic structuring of relative clauses. The learners use resumptive pronouns not only in clauses where the predicate incorporates a noun, adjective, or a prepositional phrase, but also before verbs. Conclusions:1. There is a large amount of influence from the Palestinian aspectual system on the learners' use of English tense.2. Subject-verb agreement problems can be solved when the problem of tense shift is solved, because of the cooccurrence of these phenomena.3. EFL teachers in Gaza Strip should not over-react to their students' tense usage in narrative passages and should not require them to write in a particular tense in an artificial manner.4. The learners' errors should be tolerated and should not be considered as indications of faulty learning.

A presente pesquisa trata da descrição e da análise de estratégias retóricas que abrangem a distribuição e organização funcional e conteudística de segmentos textuais de introduções de dissertações de mestrado. Para o fim proposto, os textos de introduções foram extraídos de dissertações de mestrado do Institut für Deutsch als Fremdsprache/Transnationale Germanistik da LMU de Munique e da Área de Alemão da USP, Brasil, escritas nas línguas de cada país: alemão e português. O corpus é composto de 44 textos de introdução. Com base na perspectiva linguístico-contrastiva, as constatações da retórica contrastiva, juntamente com a análise de gênero de orientação sócio-retórica, formam os fundamentos teóricos desse trabalho. Com o intuito de determinar a distribuição e a organização dos segmentos textuais, foi empregado o modelo CARS de SWALES (1990, 2004), desenvolvido inicialmente para analisar a estrutura organizacional de introduções científicas do gênero artigo. A prioridade da presente pesquisa foi a de identificar e localizar as estratégias que o autor da dissertação de mestrado utiliza, para apresentar seu próprio trabalho (movimento 3 de Swales). Devido à grande variação da sequência de estratégias retóricas não foi possível determinar um modelo organizacional claro dos textos nas duas línguas. Contudo, a descrição dos dados tornou possível a constatação de estratégias principais e secundárias empregadas na apresentação dos próprios trabalhos. Incluem-se entre as estratégias principais: a) a denominação do estabelecimento de metas, b) indicações sobre o método de procedimento, assim como c) indicações sobre a estrutura textual. Adicionalmente, é importante para os autores dos textos em questão indicar o que o trabalho não é capaz de realizar, uma estratégia não existente no modelo de Swales e que, para as introduções das dissertações de mestrado consideradas, é essencial. Contextos diferentes da produção (como, por exemplo, posições com graus hierárquicos distintos) conduzem a uma valorização diferente nas metas comunicativas, fazendo com que, por exemplo, o movimento 3 tenha um papel mais importante nas introduções de dissertações do que em artigos científicos, nos quais a revelação de uma lacuna de pesquisa é muito importante. Além da identificação e da organização de estratégias retóricas, também foi considerada a sua realização linguística e gramatical no alemão e no português, assim como examinado o emprego dos pronomes pessoais que indicam as autorreferências. Assim, objetivou-se verificar em que papéis acadêmicos o autor aparece em seus textos. Os fundamentos teóricos empregados foram fornecidos por HYLAND (2002), STEINHOFF (2007) e SCHMIDT (2010). Como resultado é possível afirmar que a) os autores dos textos em português não seguem um mesmo modelo no que concerne ao emprego de pronomes pessoais, b) nos textos em alemão o autor quase não aparece, fazendo com que as referências de autor sem a presença do agente predominem, e c) nos textos em português e em alemão o autor aparece predominantemente na função de autor, isto é, quando, por exemplo, aparecem indicações sobre a organização textual. Os resultados deste trabalho têm como meta servir de subsídio para a produção de material didático que forneça aos futuros mestrandos recursos para a elaboração de textos de introdução nas duas línguas.<br>This study explores the description and analysis of rhetorical strategies utilized in the content-related distribution and organization of textual segments of master theses introductions. For this purpose, introduction texts were taken from masters dissertations of the Institut für Deutsch als Fremdsprache/Transnationale Germanistik of the LMU of Munich and of the German Department at Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil, each written in its respective national language: German and Portuguese. The corpus consists of 44 introductions. Due to the linguistic contrastive perspective, the findings of the contrastive rhetoric constitute the theoretical basis of this research, together with the genre analysis of socio-rhetoric orientation. In order to determine the distribution and disposal of the text segments, the CARS model by SWALES (1990, 2004) was employed. This model was initially developed to analyze the organizational structure of scientific introductions of research articles. The primary focus of this study is to identify and locate the strategies that each dissertation author uses to present its own work (Swales move 3). Due to a great variety of rhetoric sequences, it was not possible to determine a conclusive organizational structure of the texts in either language. However, a description of the data made it possible to determine primary and secondary strategies employed in the presentation of master theses. Primary strategies include: a) indication of goal setting, b) indications concerning the methodical procedure, as well as c) indications about the structure of the text. Furthermore, it is important for the authors to indicate what cannot be achieved, a strategy which is not considered by Swales in his model and which is essential for the analyzed introductions of masters dissertations. Different production contexts (as, for example, positions with different hierarchical degrees) lead to a different valuation of the communicative goals, having as a result that, for example, move three in master thesis introductions plays a more important role than in scientific articles, in which the indication of a research gap is of great importance. In addition to the identification and organization of rhetoric strategies, linguistic and grammatical use in German and Portuguese was also considered, as well as the use of personal pronouns that indicate references to the author depending on the agent. The intention was to verify in which academic rules the author appears in his texts. The theoretical fundamentals employed were based on HYLAND (2002), STEINHOFF (2007) and SCHMIDT (2010). As a result, it is possible to state that a) the authors of texts in Portuguese do not follow the same model concerning the use of personal pronouns, b) in the German text the authorial presence is frequently hidden behind passive forms c) in the Portuguese, as well as in the German texts, the author appears mainly in the rule of the agent, for example, when indications about the textual organization appear. The results of this work intend to serve as a basis for the production of didactic materials by providing instruments for future masters students to employ in the production of introduction texts in both languages.

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to investigate whether there is a difference between Swedish learners of English in an at-home environment compared to Swedish learners of English who studied English abroad for a year, in their ability to distinguish between certain English phoneme. The method used to investigate was through a questionnaire where the informants had to identify words containing the sounds /z/, /θ/, /ð/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/ and /w/. The results showed that the informants who had been abroad were more familiar with the sounds than the informants who had studied in a Swedish senior high school over the same period of time. It was found that the sound /z/ was the hardest sound to identify, followed by /ʒ/, for both groups of informants.<br>Syftet med studien var att undersöka om det är någon skillnad mellan svenska elever som lär sig engelska under ett år i klassrummet eller under ett år genom utbytesstudier, när det gäller deras förmåga att skilja mellan vissa engelska fonem. Metoden som användes var genom en enkät där informanterna fick identifiera ord som innehöll ljuden /z/, /θ/, /d/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/ och /v/. Resultaten visade att informanterna som hade varit utomlands var mer bekanta med ljuden än informanterna som hade studerat vid ett svenskt gymnasium under samma tid. Det visade sig att ljudet /z/ var den svåraste ljudet att identifiera, följt av /ʒ/ för båda informantgrupperna.

Judging from this point of view, Mandarin comparison constructions are crucial for Mandarin learners. Regarding to the types of comparison constructions, the article only elaborated the comparison constructions which comparing with two objects. In other words, the article will not mentioned the comparing situations with three or more objects. After using contrastive analysis to compare Mandarin and English comparative constructions, there are three pieces of advice that author presents to Chinese instructors in the future. First of all, Mandarin teacher should stress on building up learner’s Chinese adjective because both English and Mandarin used a lot of adjectives to express the comparison result between two objects. Second, of all, Mandarin teachers should also put out sufficient practicing of Chinese adverbials because Chinese does not have inflection to show the difference between two compared objects. Third, Mandarin teachers should mention and demonstrate the differences that two compared objects’ positions are placed in differently in Mandarin and English comparative construction. In sum, the author suggests that Chinese teacher should instruct mandarin comparative construction by taking advantage of the similarities and differences between Mandarin and English comparative construction.

Abstract:
M.A.<br>This study wants to outline some of the errors made by the Motswana child when she/he communicates in English. I also want to look at the origin of the errors and how the errors affect cohesive writing and interpretation. This research also aims at making second language teachers aware of the influence a first language can have in the learning of a second language. Note: At school level, the student/child learns the language and does not acquire it and thus language learning skills or strategies should not be confused with language acquisition skills or strategies. Transfer has long been a controversial issue, bur recent studies support the view that crosslinguistic influences can have an important impact on second language learning. To elaborate on the above issue, the article, the pronoun and number will be looked at. I want to establish how much influence a learner's native language can have in making the learning of a new language easy or difficult. I want us to look at the following questions of which some will lead or develop into our hypotheses:- Will knowledge of the origin of errors eliminate or reduce the errors? Which errors will be eliminated and at what rate? Will the remedial lessons have an effect on the elimination or reduction of errors? Is the contrastive analysis method the best way to handle such a situation? To what extent do errors affect interpretation and connectivity? The study is conducted on the following language categories:- The pronoun (English vs Tswana) ; The article (English vs Tswana) ; Number (English vs Tswana) ; Cohesive writing (misconception/ambiguity)

Abstract:
The main aim of this study was to assess the degree of similarity or variation between the two cross-border standardised varieties of the Sena language spoken in Malawi and Mozambique. The study sets out to test the hypothesis that the two varieties are similar enough to be standardised into one common standard Sena. A contrastive analysis was done on the translated Biblical texts of Jonah and Matthew in both varieties on the grammatical, orthographical and lexical level. The findings show that on a grammatical and lexical level there is minimal variation, but on an orthographical level there is a 20% variation partly due to different orthographic conventions used by the translators. These findings suggest that in the light of the current trend of regionalisation, standardisation is desirable and could be achieved by a cross-border language commission.<br>Linguistics<br>M.A.

Abstract:
The production and consumption of handbooks for MTS and for FS have remained distinct, characterized by two different theoretical traditions. This divide has never been based upon the systematic contrastive and comparative analysis of the two types of handbooks, but purely on abstract histories of ‘method’ and origins. This work features the analysis of the prefaces and contents of six handbooks—three addressed to MTS and three to FS—covering the periods 1880–1920, 1920–1960, 1960–1990) to see whether similarities between the two text-types exist. The results of the analyses disclose interesting similarities, suggesting the need to further pursue this innovative line of research.

Abstract:
The current grammatical and linguistic literature focuses predominantly on the adverbs meaning ‘more’ and ‘most’ when the periphrastic (analytic) comparison in both Serbian and English are being described. However, both languages have additional adverbs that are used with positives to express comparative and superlative meanings (e.g. jače – najjače, more strongly – most strongly). These adverbial forms have been systematically neglected in both grammatical traditions. Moreover, there are no contrastive analyses on this phenomenon. The main goal of this paper is to contrast the lexical repertoires of the adverbs that are used as alternative models of periphrastic comparison. The paper also aims at comparing and contrasting some distributive features of these models. The research conducted here started with the independent corpus analyses of both languages. The corpus analysis of the English language was conducted on COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English), whereas the corpus analysis of the Serbian language was conducted on КSSJ 2013 (Korpus savremenog srpskog jezika). We opted for independent corpus analyses in order to avoid the potential negative outcomes of working on parallel corpuses (i.e. that the use of a form found in L2 is directly motivated by a form used in L1). After the separate corpus analyses, we conducted a theoretical contrastive analysis. The results presented in this paper will show that the adverbs with the identical semantic features are used in alternative models in both languages. In addition, the paper shall reveal that these models do manifest more or less different tendencies when it comes to their distribution.

Abstract:
The academic community in Russia, like any academic community, is under constant pressure to publish the results of their research. Exploring cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary variations in academic texts of different genres is essential to overcome potential academic language challenges. The study examines the extent to which academics’ use of rhetorical devices from different lingua-cultural origins can hinder the publication process. We also looked for particular cultural models that might hinder the process of adapting national writing styles to globally recognised standards. Specifically, the paper looks at scholarly norms as demonstrated through the use of metadiscursive markers of engagement. Following Hyland’s taxonomy, we identify the interactive and interactional domain, the latter consisting of attitude markers, hedges, boosters, self-mentions, and engagement markers. First, engagement markers deal with the need to satisfy the reader’s expectations of inclusivity. Second, engagement markers engage the reader in a debate through reader asides and references. The second function seems to be more concerned with rhetorical positioning of the audience and acknowledging the reader’s role as a critic and potential negator of claims. The first step for our research was to construct a corpus of 38 research papers. The results of the comparative analysis indicated that Russian applied linguistics papers written in English use fewer engagement signals than English L1 publications and the higher levels of interpretivism are not to be expected in Russian academic writing traditions. Further research is needed to examine the academic writing styles of texts from different cultural and disciplinary backgrounds.

Abstract:
The paper deals with the phenomenon of anthropomorphism and considers the ways of interpreting anthropomorphic characters in the reality of literary texts. Literary anthropomorphic characters are being analyzed and studied upon in the context of literary translation studies. Some differences in the structure and functions of anthropomorphic characters are mentioned in the scientific research. The author comments on translators’ decisions concerning units and methods of translation. A detailed descriptive and comparative analysis of anthropomorphic concepts in two linguistic cultures is carried out. The phenomenon of transformation of anthropomorphic characters in translated texts is studied on the basis of contrastive linguistics. The research focuses on the linguistic and cultural characteristics of anthropomorphic concepts and ways of their interpreting in literary translation. Linguistic anthropomorphism plays an important role in the theory of translation and interpretation and in linguocultural studies.

Abstract:
Purpose. The goal of the present article is to analyze the original text of the tragedy “Romeo and Juliette” and its translations into the Russian and Ossetian languages to reveal Shakespeare’s metaphors for further analysis of the ways they are translated and possible problems translators might come across while translating. The main methods employed in the research are: the method of contextual analysis, the descriptive-analytical and the contrastive method. Results. The research was based on the theory of Shakespeare’s metaphor introduced by S.M. Mezenin. According to S.M. Mezenin the revealed metaphors were divided into several semantic groups the most numerous of which comprises metaphors with the semantic model “man - nature” that once again proved the idea of Caroline Spurgeon. The analysis of the translations into the Russian and Ossetian languages showed that translators do not always manage to preserve in the translated text unique Shakespeare’s metaphors. Practical implications. The received results can be used in teaching theory and practice of translation, cultural science, comparative lexicology of the Ossetian and Russian languages and the Ossetian and English languages.
