Abstract:
The paper investigated sectoral comparative advantage of Botswana. Machinery/electric sector tops inter-sectoral comparative advantage in Botswana. It is followed by the textiles sector. The least in terms of comparative advantage is foot wear/head gear sector then followed by raw hides, skins leather and furs sector. The sector which tops in Botswana in comparative advantage, is not necessarily the one that tops in export value. Diamonds which dominate Botswana’s exports fall in the stone/glass sector and the sector possess less comparative advantage than other sectors ahead of it. It is recommended that Botswana should be promoting other products also other than diamonds in the international markets. That Botswana enacts a focused export promotion strategy on sectors which possess comparative advantage. Botswana should continue providing enabling environment that can lead to inflow of foreign direct investment through transnational corporations with technology that can improve sectoral comparative advantage.

Wynne, Terence Stewart. "The present perfect : a corpus-based investigation." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/3472.

Full text
Abstract:
On the basis of an investigation of a corpus of 5.5 million words, this thesis analyses the use of the present perfect in modem American and British English. The investigation traces the development of the present perfect from its origins as a structure with adjectival meaning to its modern-day use as an aspectual verb form. A frequency analysis tests the claims of various writers that the present perfect is losing ground against the preterite and is less frequent in American than in British English. Neither claim is supported by the results of this analysis. A temporal specifier analysis investigates the co-occurrence of a large number of adverbials with the various verb forms. It finds that certain groups of specifiers which have hitherto been considered markers for the present perfect are in fact very poor indicators. Specifiers indicating a period of time lasting up to the moment of utterance, however, are found to be very reliable indicators. With one exception no significant difference was found between the British and American corpora in this respect. A functional-semantic analysis examines the various theories of the present perfect against the background of the results of the empirical investigation and finds them to be insufficient in one or more respects. In the final chapter the division between tense and aspect is shown to be artificial and a model of the present perfect is presented which is based on the idea of multilayered aspectual values. The model is centred on the unifying concept of phragmatisation - the closing of the event time-frame. According to this model, discourse topics involving the present perfect are perceived to describe an event which takes place in a time frame which is not closed to the deictic zero point at the moment of utterance. The final section describes which factors are operative in the phragmatisation or closing of event time frames.

Chung, Jennifer. "An investigation of reasons for Finland's success in PISA." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2009. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:62b7a22f-d930-4eb0-893d-d703fd9d182d.

Abstract:
The Programme for International Student Assessment, or PISA, administered by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, surveyed fifteen-year-olds for the first time in 2000. PISA focuses on mathematics, science, and reading literacy, and intends to undertake a new study every three years. The administration in 2003 added a section that measured problem-solving skills. The results from all three surveys thus far have placed Finland as the highest achieving country in PISA. Finland’s top performances in PISA astonished the educational world. More so than previous cross-national surveys such as TIMSS and PIRLS, PISA has drawn worldwide educational interest towards Finland and its educational system. PISA, unlike TIMSS, does not measure mastery of curriculum, but rather outcomes of education. PISA focuses on real-life applications of knowledge. Triggering global curiosity, the PISA has placed Finland on the itinerary of those wishing to discover the influences behind educational success. This research focuses upon Finland’s historical, cultural, and social context as a part of the Nordic countries and also its immense success in PISA. This project uncovers some of the factors contributing to Finland’s success in education, as indicated by the results in PISA. Finland’s history as a part of both Sweden and Russia has intertwined education with the movement for independence. The struggles after independence, including war and recession, have also reinforced the importance of education within Finnish society. The important status of teachers in Finland, in addition to their high quality, has further enhanced the excellence of the Finnish education system. PISA findings, however, have indicated that the Swedish-speaking Finns score lower than the Finnish-speaking Finns, a phenomenon explored within the research. This project investigates the reasons behind this counterintuitive result. The project incorporates perspectives through interviews with teachers and head teachers from the six sample schools, both Swedish-speaking and Finnish-speaking, Finnish education ministers, PISA creators from the OECD, and Finnish educational researchers and professors responsible for executing PISA in Finland. Their insight, from many different points of view, illuminated different perspectives on PISA and education in Finland.

Thank you.
In Belgium, approximately 75 homicides a year go unnoticed. In addition it is estimated that 5 - 10% of the so-called natural deaths are not natural at all. This amounts to 5,000 – 10,000 deaths a year with an incorrect cause of death. Both Belgium – composed of three regions, three communities, and ten provinces – and the United States of America – divided into 50 states – are overseen by a Federal Government, and their police system consist of multiple law enforcement agencies. When looking from a distance, more similarities than differences are seen for the organization of law enforcement agencies. However, differences become apparent when analyzing the responsibilities of the different agencies during crime scene processing and evidence collection. Seen the scope of the forensic science program, the focus will more specifically be on the process, procedures, and actors involved. The goal of this thesis is to (a) analyze the Belgian and U.S. crime scene investigation system, (b) compare the two systems to one another, (c) discuss the weaknesses and strengths behind each system, and finally (d) come up with recommendations. Existing issues will also be evaluated and their impact will be discussed. To achieve the above mentioned goals, information was obtained through literature review and interviews with experts. During the interviews information (e.g. books), not available to the general public, was obtained. Crime scene investigation, for both the U.S. and Belgian system, can be divided into 5 different steps: the initial notification, the first response team, the investigation of the crime scene (documenting, collecting, and processing evidence), the analysis of collected evidence, and the autopsy. In both systems, first responders and emergency medical services will be the first actors present at the scene. Although most procedures and actors involved in the investigation of a crime scene are similar between the United States of America and Belgium, some differences cannot be overlooked. These differences are: the person in charge of completing the death certificate, determining whether or not jurisdiction is accepted, the educational background and composition of the crime scene team, the investigation of the deceased, the requirements needed to become a forensic pathologist, and the cases in which an autopsy is systematically performed. Comparing both crime scene investigation systems showed that each system has its own strengths, weaknesses, and issues. The comparison also showed that both systems can learn from one another, since the combination of already existing processes and procedures, from both crime scene investigation systems, was used to create an “ideal” crime scene investigation system.
2031-01-01

Abstract:

Apolipoprotein E is an exchangeable apolipoprotein whose isoforms are associated with various disease risk profiles. Individuals bearing the APOE ϵ4 allele are at increased risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease compared to those bearing the APOE ϵ3 allele. The two isoforms differ in amino acid at position 112: apoE3 bears a Cys while apoE4 bears an Arg. It is hypothesized that the Cys to Arg substitution in apoE4 causes a decrease in stability in comparison to apoE3, which is exaggerated at endosomal pH <6.0. In our study, changes in secondary structure were monitored using circular dichroism at pH 7.4 and pH 3.5. Chemical denaturation indicated that both apoE3 and apoE4 retained their helical secondary structure at the lower pH, with a biphasic and monophasic guanidine HCl denaturation profile, respectively. Tertiary structure was monitored at both pH’s through fluorescence spectral characteristics and mobility of a fluorescent probe attached to each of the 7 major amphipathic α-helices of apoE3 and apoE4. The data showed decreases in fluorescence emission (FE), changes in fluorescence polarization (FP), and fluctuations in probe mobility, which were interpreted as likely formation of a molten globule. Formation of a molten globule appeared to occur during denaturation primarily for apoE4, and thermodynamic parameters of apoE4 showed a lower stability than apoE3, with a larger effect of pH. Taken together, our results suggest that the acidic pH in the endosomal compartments could interact with the native structure of apoE4 to generate a molten globule state that is able to bind endosomal membranes, other proteins, or itself. This study offers mechanistic insight into the impact of the single residue difference between apoE3 and apoE4 with regard to folding/unfolding behavior, and with regard to its physiological and pathological implications.

Abstract:
Abstract‘What is the place of local government in federal studies?’ This is the question that this chapter addresses. The fact that local government has its own place within federal arrangements is a predicament to which every federal scholar might wish to subscribe. What this ‘place’ implies, however, is an aspect that still needs to be adequately explored. Although local government has been integrated into the umbrella of federal studies in more recent years, its investigation within federal settings is still considered an anomaly in many respects. To put it differently, what this ‘collocation’ implies for federal systems is not as clear as one might expect. Consequently, this chapter explores these issues from an innovative angle with a focus on powers, territory, and money, i.e. the elements that can be ascribed to the foundations of local government in federal systems.

Abstract This paper presents the results of comparative analyses between the TriTec Power Unit and a typical crank type air motor based on their mathematical models. The comparative analyses showed that the efficiency of the TriTec Power Unit is superior to that of a comparable conventional crank type motor. A representative value for the improvement in efficiency is 50%. A number of case studies have been considered in our investigation in order to assess performance of the motors under various combinations of working conditions that may occur in practice. In all of the cases studied, the efficiency of the TriTec Power Unit has been superior to that of the crank type motor.

Full text
Abstract:
Combined cycles, at present, have a prominent role in the power generation and advanced combined cycles efficiencies have now reached to 60 percent. Examination of thermodynamic behavior of these cycles is still carried out to determine optimum configuration and optimum design conditions for any cycle arrangement. Actually the performance parameters of these cycles are under the influence of various parameters and therefore the recognition of the optimum conditions is quiet complicated. In this research an extensive thermodynamic model was developed for analyzing major parameters variations on gas turbine performance and different configurations of advanced steam cycles: dual and triple pressure cycles with and without reheating in steam turbine sections. In this model it is attempted to consider all factors that affect on actual behavior of these cycles such as blade cooling (air cooling) in gas turbine and different formulations for Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) performance calculation. Results show good agreement with manufactures data. In the case of gas turbine cycle, location of coolant extraction has large influence on cycle performance. For extraction from compressor end, improving blade cooling technology is suitable than increasing TIT. For mid stage extraction, improving blade cooling technology and TIT has similar effects on efficiency, while power is more sensitive to TIT. Coolant air precooling has large positive effect in high TIT and medium blade cooling technology, but always it increases power. Turbine exhaust temperature has large influence on optimum layout and configuration of HRSG, while for low exhaust temperatures increasing number of pressure levels increase power and heat recovery greatly, for high exhaust temperatures this leads lower enhancement in power and recovery. Second law efficiency of HRSG is proportional to power production in steam cycle. It decreases with increasing gas turbine exhaust temperature.

Wei, Xin, Amanda Wortman, Cristina Heffernan, et al. Language and Mathematics Learning: A Comparative Study of Digital Learning Platforms. SEERNet, Digital Promise, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.51388/20.500.12265/206.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper presents a conceptual exploration of how Digital Learning Platforms (DLPs) can be utilized to investigate the impact of language clarity, precision, engagement, and contextual relevance on mathematics learning from word problems. Focusing on three distinct DLPs—ASSISTments/E-TRIALS, MATHia/UpGrade, and Canvas/Terracotta—we propose hypothetical studies aimed at uncovering how nuanced language modifications can enhance mathematical understanding and engagement. While these studies are illustrative in nature, they provide a blueprint for researchers interested in leveraging DLPs for empirical investigation so that future investigators gain a better understanding of the emerging infrastructure for research in DLPs and the opportunities provided by them. In highlighting three distinct implementations of the same core research question, we reveal both commonalities as well as differences in how different educational technologies might build evidence, offering a unique opportunity to advance the field of math education and other education research fields.

Muñoz Fernandez, Cristina, and Patricia Henriquez. IDB Environmental and Social Grievance Protocol: 2023 Annual Report. Inter-American Development Bank, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0013137.

Full text
Abstract:
Since November 2021, when the Environmental and Social Policy Framework entered into effect, the IDB has a direct channel, at the management level, for stakeholders to contact the institution directly when they wish to file a complaint about the environmental or social performance of IDB-financed projects. The IDB Grievance Protocol is part of the IDB Group's complaint system, through which the first line of attention to users is the project-level complaint and grievance mechanism. Users can also access IDB management grievance mechanisms, and as a last resort, the Independent Consultation and Investigation Mechanism (MICI). This annual IDB Grievance Protocol report provides an overview of grievances received and handled related to environmental and/or social issues in 2023. It includes key issues, comparative data from the two years of the Grievance Protocol implementation, lessons learned, and information regarding outreach efforts and next steps.

Bañez, Emerson. Rethinking Taxation in the Digital Economy. Philippine Institute for Development Studies, 2022. https://doi.org/10.62986/dp2022.56.

Full text
Abstract:
The study aims to evaluate the country’s legal framework for taxing digital transactions, specifically, the extent to which the provisions of the law can map onto the value of digital markets. Based on the findings on the structure of the digital commerce value chain and its possible interactions with both current and proposed tax regimes, four policy prescriptions are recommended: (1) to optimize existing tax authority over platforms, (2) to establish a digital-ready tax administration, (3) to expand the scope for investigation and liability, and (4) to promote engagement at the international level. Nonresident providers have gained the most from digital markets while minimizing the tax impact of their activities. Thus, the Philippines should continue to explore multilateral options for reallocating taxing rights and addressing base erosion and profit shifting. These include regional tax treaties and the OECD framework treaty. Efforts at negotiating and crafting the provisions should consider the Philippines’ trading power relative to other countries and its comparative ability to exercise jurisdiction.

Abstract:
This project undertakes a large-scale quantitative and qualitative investigation into the lived experiences of transgender, gender non-conforming and gender non-binary persons in the Indian science ecosystem. Towards this goal, the study uses four key research methods: (a) applications under the Right to Information Act, 2005 to investigate the status of implementation of the legislative, judicial and policy documents that govern the access of transgender, gender non-conforming and gender non-binary persons to the Indian science ecosystem; (b) a policyscape approach to policy analysis to understand the effectiveness of the legislative, judicial and policy interventions that govern the access of transgender, gender non-conforming and gender non-binary persons to the Indian science ecosystem; (c) qualitative interviews and focus group discussions to understand the ways in which transgender, gender non-conforming and gender non-binary persons negotiate the Indian science ecosystem; and (d) a comparative historiography to understand and explicate the possibilities of political solidarity between different marginalised groups in the context of higher education in science in India, including caste-, gender- and disability-marginalised groups.

Schmidt, Aaron, and Carey Baxter. Cartographic comparative analysis of undocumented farmsteads at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/48075.

Full text
Abstract:
Government acquisition of farmland within the present-day boundaries of Fort McCoy is defined by two consequential events: the founding of the installation in 1909, and its expansion in the early 1940s to provide training lands during World War II. Since the 1990s, Fort McCoy’s cultural resources manager (CRM) has sponsored archaeological investigations to determine the eligibility of former farmstead sites for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Using geographic information systems (GISs) to compare historic cartographic sources, this project attempts to ascertain whether there are additional farmstead sites at Fort McCoy that may have been overlooked in existing archaeological investigations. Additionally, it provides a short summary of farmstead archaeological activity at Fort McCoy over the past 20 years, a brief historic context highlighting characteristics of farmsteads in the Upper Midwest, and a brief explanation of enhanced lidar techniques that personnel at Fort McCoy can explore for future use. Finally, an appendix provides a list of questions that may be used to conduct oral interviews with descendants of families who farmed within the present-day boundaries of Fort McCoy.
