Abstract:
Ismail Kadare, the most famous writer of today's Albanian literature, is also one of the most famous writers of contemporary literature in general. Therefore, whenever we mention this genius of Albanian belles-letters, first of all our mind goes to his work, its structure, themes, characters, actions and events, words and messages, and of course, the artistic features. Although it is rare to come across in the works of any other author a literary approach that can be compared to the singularity of this author, the meeting points and messages are evident. The artistic singularity is easily discernible, but the more one delves into his creative gallery, the more inevitable it is to enter into the many realms of the imagination to finally come to the conclusion that the upper realms are possessed only by geniuses, just like the sovereign of Albanian letters. The intertwining of the whole corpus of his works, with the way of narration and action, give interesting mosaics that together build the great monumental picture, which can be designed and realized only by the imagination of a writer of a promimence like him. Another motivation to deepen the gaze appears when comparisons are made with the works and characters of other authors of world literature. Comparable to meeting points in words and messages from genius motifs of different times. Geniuses break times.

Abstract:
The main aim of the paper is to highlight the relationship between Christianity and homosexuality based on selected fiction texts by Czech writers and poets (Zeyer, Fuks, Kuběna, Georgiev). The selected authors represent different historical periods and different currents of opinion. We are convinced that the theoretical part provides a suitable methodological basis for the part of the paper in which we discuss homosexual motives in selected works of the mentioned authors. To sum up, we can state that the explicit expression of homoerotic and other motives is only relevant today; in artistic narratives dating back to the 19th and 20th centuries, these symbols are expressed in a hidden way, and it is up to each recipient to decide whether and to what extent they see them in these narratives. Zeyer could not fully express himself; he was forced to use hidden symbols to be who he felt he was, at least in his works. Kuběna, in the context of the 1970s, treats the topic of homosexuality very openly, he is not afraid of being condemned by society. Fuks´ works are characterized by a considerable degree of autobiography. Despite Georgiev´s clear rejection of faith, a believing homosexual appears more than once in his work. In this paper we try to fill a certain gap in the field of comparative research in works of art and poems by authors who in some way tended to homosexuality because within the Czech context, we have encountered this area of scholarly articles sporadically.

Abstract:
The article explores the work of the Kabardian poet Anatoly Muratovich Bitsuev. The main re-search attention is focused on the dominant motifs and genre characteristics of his poetry. The themes and problems of poems and ballads have been studied. The main lyrics of the poet are re-vealed, military and love lyrics are thoroughly analyzed. The level of assimilation of the ballad by the author under study is determined by considering the evolution of the genre in national litera-ture. The ballads “The Robber and the Storyteller”, “Love”, “Dzhambolat”, “Duel”, “Junior” are considered, their content and formal (compositional) features are studied for compliance or non-compliance with the canons of the genre. In the study's course, a complex of scientific methods was applied, including a comparative historical method, analysis, and description. The revealed results can be used in the history's study of the Adyghe (Kabardian) poetry and literature in gen-eral, the development of special courses and research in national philology.

Abstract:
The issue of conceptual correlation of Slavic stories about Savva Grudtsyn and Pan Tvardovsky with the concepts of “Faustian theme”, “Faustian legend” and “Faustian story” is considered. The question is raised about the legitimacy of referring the Slavic variants of the motive of the contract with the devil to the general group of similar motives by analogy with the “Faustian” one. A review of domestic and foreign scientific literature devoted to the difference and similarity of Slavic plots with the legend of Faust, as well as common sources and typological characteristics of the features of the “Faustian theme” is carried out. The results of a comparative analysis of texts about Faust, Savva Grudtsyn and Pan Tvardovsky are presented. Special attention is paid to the comparison of the anonymous work about Savva Grudtsyn with the novel by the Norwegian writer M. K. Hansen. The novelty of the research is seen in the fact that for solve this problem a systematic literary methodology is proposed in the key of historical poetics, based on the differentiation of the analysis of plots, motives, the system of characters and semantic accents of works. The relevance of the study is due to the introduction into scientific circulation of previously poorly studied texts of literature and folklore, in which the plot of a contract with a demon is seen. The definitions of specific motives are given, which make it possible to differentiate literary monuments according to the principle of a plot model and a system of characters. The author's development in relation to the sources of the specified plot type is presented.

Abstract:
This scientific article is devoted to the study of the influence of mystical motifs and images of the Middle Ages on the work of the Russian poet Nikolai Gumilev. The central task of the study is to analyze the specific works of the poet, in which the influence of mystical themes is most clearly traced. The article draws attention to various aspects of the interaction of mysticism and creativity, including structure, rhythm, language and images in Gumilev's works. The article uses methods of comparative analysis, textual interpretation and cultural and historical contextualization. Particular attention is paid to the reception of mystical elements in Gumilev's work among his contemporaries and critics, such as Marina Tsvetaeva and Anna Akhmatova. One of the conclusions of the study is that mystical motifs and images not only enrich Gumilev's creative world, but also serve as a key factor in the formation of his unique style. This, in turn, allows us to consider him one of the most significant and interesting authors of Russian literature of the early XX century. The novelty of the study is a detailed analysis of mystical elements in the context of Gumilev's general style and aesthetic principles, which was not previously considered in such completeness. These results may be useful for further study of the influence of mystical themes on Russian literature in general and on Gumilev's work in particular.

Abstract Our study is conceived as a comparative analysis of Zakes Mda’s postcolonial and postmodern novel The Heart of Redness and Joseph Conrad’s canonical and colonial novella Heart of Darkness, from the viewpoint of a literarily encoded anthropology of the body. In both texts, body marks and body pain are prominent and recurrent motives, carrying along important cultural meanings, related to several classic themes of colonial and postcolonial literature: the birth and becoming of cultural identity and awareness, culture shock, cultural contacts, enculturation versus deculturation, and cultural memory, as a vehicle and repository of myths, history and (body) image stereotypes.

Abstract:
The philosophical views of German romantics, as well as images, motives, chronotopes characteristic of German romanticism, embodied in the domestic urban fantasy are analyzed. Special attention is paid to the techniques of the comparative method. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the almost complete absence of works devoted to the study of urban fantasy. It is noted that this fantasy subgenre has not been considered in detail in the context of the continuation of the traditions of romantic German literature. The theoretical basis of the research is presented by the works of M. M. Bakhtin, N. Ya. Berkovsky, V. M. Zhirmunsky, Yu. M. Lotman, S. S. Levochsky, etc. It was revealed that urban fantasy inherits the main images, themes, motives, symbols that dominated in German romanticism: the motive of a double, the image of a doll, an artist, etc. It was established that the authors of urban fantasy not only reproduce the image of a romantic artist-creator, but depict a character-demiurge. It has been proven that urban fantasy deepens and transforms the romantic “night beginning”: the images of the dead and vampires become plot-forming characters in independent series of works. It is concluded that the authors of urban fantasy, like German romantics, activate the readers’ attention to mythology and folklore, creating new fantastic worlds with their help.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to a comprehensive review of an Early Medieval Chinese poetic cycle, consisting of two friendly messages preceded by a preface, - the Parting With a Friend by Cao Zhi (192-232). The article is the first to provide an interlinear translation and a sequential analysis of the cycle. In progress of the analysis the images, tropes and figures in both poems, the motives, different types of connection between the motives, the themes of the poems, their compositional structures, genre identity, and the peculiarities of the poetics of the Parting With a Friend as a cycle were examined in detail. By the example of the Parting With a Friend, conclusions regarding the appearance of a poetic cycle in Chinese literature at the turn of Antiquity and the Middle Ages were drawn. The poetics of the Parting With a Friend was examined on the base of the Western theoretical material, which makes our study not purely synological, but partly comparative.

Abstract:
The subject of the study is the representation of Christian vision in the Ukrainian literature of independence. The problem is considered in the dichotomy of conservative Christian views against multicultural and atheistic education. The purpose of this study is to discuss theses in T. Trokhymenko’s 2022 article ‘The modern Ukrainian Literature and Christianity’, published in the journal ‘Patriarchy: the Uniate analytical periodical’. The structural elements of the work repeat the confutable source. The author uses the methods of slow reading, componential analysis, as well as typological and comparative. The novelty of the study is determined by the transformation of receptions of religious motifs in Ukrainian literature and the change of the religious space of Ukraine, which prompts us to understand the mechanisms of such transformations in the modern historical context. As a result of the study, it was established that the worldview paradigm of Christianity has undergone significant distortion due to Soviet policy and the influence of other religions - both Ukrainian and foreign. At the same time, it is ascertained that author's expressions of ideas and images promote Christian ideas, but do not portray canonical ecclesiastical texts. As a result of it the vision of Christian ideas becomes broader, but the distinctions between primary sources and author's interpretations become obliterated. Based on the analysis of modern Ukrainian literature, two trends have been traced: 1) the reception of biblical motifs in the context of the postmodern ironic tradition, which is characterized by skeptical-ironic interpretation of religious motifs and images, outrageousness and carnivalesqueness (inherent in the early works of V. Neborak and the early lyrics of S. Zhadan); 2) the reception of biblical motifs in the context of the existential-philosophical and cultural tradition, the central idea of such a reception is the idea of the importance of faith, humanity in the apocalyptic world of modern reality (in works by S. Zhadan, Yu. Vynnychuk, H. Marchuk). The perspective of the research can be seen in the study of the work of other Ukrainian writers (in particular, O. Zabuzhko, H. Pahutyak, M. Matios, K. Kalytko, etc.). The research is not exhausted but will be continued within the framework of other publications, which will highlight the peculiarities of Christian imagery in the creative practices of Ukrainian writers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

Abstract:
The article considers the phenomenon of the national Tuscan sense of humour and the influence of local mentality on the poetry of the region. Quotes from the pieces of Guittone D’Arezzo, Rustico di Filippo, Dante Alighieri, Lorenzo de’ Medici, Francesco Berni and other authors of various periods, from the 13th to the 20th century, demonstrate in chronological order which part the specific Florentine irony takes in the process of formation, development and transformation of the Italian comic verse (or realistic verse). This genre arose not only as a poetical method but also as a reaction to the social and political situation. Comparative analysis of the poems allows us to follow the evolution of the Florentine poetic tradition and draw the conclusion about the cyclical nature of the literature process, confirmed by the regular return to the debunking of excessive tragedy in Italian poetry by the comic verse. In addition, the article reveals the common features of comic verse of different historical periods, which consist in the similarity not only of themes and motives but also of comic techniques based on the characteristic sceptical view of the life of Tuscans.

Anker, Willem P. P. "Die idioot : spieël en skadu ; Sirkus (roman)." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/53373.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)- Stellenbosch University, 2003.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In fulfilment of the degree of Magister in Creative Writing: Afrikaans, a novel titled Sirkus (Circus) is presented in which the main character figures as an idiot. It is accompanied by a perspicacious formal essay which maintains the relationship between theory and novel. The essay titled "Die idioot: spieël en skadu" (The idiot: mirror and shadow) reflects on the problematics concerning the representation of the idiot in literary texts. The essay investigates the phenomenon of the idiot in literature according to well-known literary texts presenting idiots. What these texts have in common is that the narrator acts on behalf of a character who does not have the ability nor the will to narrate himself. The problematics is viewed from a thematic as well as writing technique niveaux, according to insights gleaned from literature, philosophy, narratology and psychology. The argument concludes by reflecting on the responsibility of the author and the ethics of creating an effigy of the idiot. The novel Sirkus, (Circus), focuses on an idiot character with webbed hands and feet, Siegfried Landman. It is an exposition of his journey to hell starting on a farm in the Karoo. It takes him through a grotesque urban landscape where he eventually ends up in a circus of freaks. The text starts with the death of Siegfried's father and is in the form of a quest narrative, a quest for the vague image of his uncle Fischer. The tale emanates predominantly from Siegfried's consciousness. During the course of the text he is accompanied by varioius travelling companions who each fmd a voice in the text.

Abstract:

Majumder, Doyeeta. "The 'New Prince' and the problem of lawmaking violence in early modern drama." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/11969.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis examines the fraught relationship between the sixteenth-century formulations of the theories of sovereign violence, tyranny and usurpation and the manifestations of these ideas on the contemporary English stage. The thesis will attempt to trace an evolution of the poetics of English and Scottish political drama through the early, middle, and late decades of the sixteenth-century in conjunction with developments in the political thought of the century, linking theatre and politics through the representations of the problematic figure of the usurper or, in Machiavellian terms, the ‘New Prince'. I will demonstrate that while the early Tudor morality plays are concerned with the legitimate monarch who becomes a tyrant, the later historical and tragic drama of the century foregrounds the figure of the illegitimate monarch who is a tyrant by default. On the one hand the sudden proliferation of usurpation plots in Elizabethan drama and the transition from the legitimate tyrant to the usurper tyrant is linked to the dramaturgical shift from the allegorical morality play tradition to later history plays and tragedies, and on the other it is reflective of a poetic turn in political thought which impelled political writers to conceive of the state and sovereignty as a product of human ‘poiesis', independent of transcendental legitimization. The poetics of political drama and the emergence of the idea of ‘poiesis' in the political context merge in the figure of the nuove principe: the prince without dynastic claims who creates his sovereignty by dint of his own ‘virtu' and through an act of law-making violence.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explore the novels of a highly respected author of young adult literature and to summarize the plots, analyze the themes, and examine themotivations of the characters in a format that would be accessible and useful to the classroom teachers and students who read her novels. The bulk of the document will follow the format of the Twayne Series of Young Adult Writers, a serial publication of biographical information, plot summary, and critical commentary that is standard in many school libraries. Cynthia Voigt's novels are both popular with teachers and students and well-acclaimed by literary critics and scholars of young adult literature. The first chapter outlines Voigt's professional career and the events in her life that affected her writing. The four chapters that follow treat individual novels grouped as they relate to themes of defining a self, balancing commitment to self and family, learning to recognize and value individual differences, and finding the courage to challenge socially conventional expectations. The sixth chapter summarizes Voigt's philosophy of personal development as it is reflected in her writing, and the last chapter suggest strategies which could be applied to Voigt's novels in the classroom. Throughout the analses of Voigt's novels, critical Opinions and scholarly commentary have been summarized to provide a perspective that is informed by a variety of sources of information about this author's work in particular and about young adult novels in general.

Abstract:
This thesis involved the various discourses around Egyptian novelist Naguib Mahfouz's representation of women in four of his most well-known novels, which were originally written in Arabic. At the one extreme, he is described as a feminist writer who takes up an aggressive anti-patriarchal stance, delivering a multi-faceted critique on Egyptian society. Mahfouz's personal milieu, as well as the broader social context in which he finds himself, was given careful consideration. It was also considered whether the genre in which the four novels have been written has a significant influence on the manner in which Mahfouz has represented his female characters.

Abstract:
Fairies feature widely in medieval literature, but their appearances in medieval Latin texts provide a special window onto belief in fairies. Since the Latin vocabulary for magical beings in general was largely borrowed from Classical sources, Latin can muddy the semantics of fairy taxonomy. But Latin provides a view that cannot be duplicated by vernacular texts: legal charges and historical accounts, largely in Latin, reveal how fairies were thought to be real, and people’s interaction with them worthy of sanction or of historical notice. Furthermore, many of the earliest attestations of influential themes and motifs first appear in Latin texts, and demonstrate the degree to which stories moved between Latin and the vernaculars, between genres, and between oral and written forms. Latin texts preserve the kind of fairy lore that underlies more modern treatments of fairies, while also serving as testimony to sophisticated ways of thinking about fairies that would otherwise have faded from view.

The difficulties of linguistic communication between European travelers and Native Americans and the solutions adopted in terms of language and vocabulary in the Decades de orbe novo of Peter Martyr of Anghiera are analyzed; in this text some themes are already present that will live on in the Latin epic literature with “Columbian” themes in the sixteenth century, such as the Syphilis by Girolamo Fracastoro, the De navigatione Christophori Columbi by Lorenzo Gambara and the Columbeis by Giulio Cesare Stella. Particular attention is dedicated to the progressive identification of Columbus with the Virgil’s Aeneas (as well as of the oceanic journey with the wanderings of Aeneas in the Mediterranean Sea), and to the birth of the myth of the “noble savage” in relation to the projection of the classical myth of the aurea aetas on the simple and gentle life of Native Americans.

Abstract:
Pointing to a millennial history of Latin-Arabic entanglement, the article analyses how Latin literature and the Arabic language influenced each other mutually. It explains the preliminaries of literary entanglement and then deals in chronological order with processes of reception, which led to the Arabization or Latinization of literary works, themes, and forms. The Arabic reception of Latin works was channelled by the explicit Christian character of medieval Latin literature, geopolitical shifts, and the increasing relevance of the Romance vernaculars. Latin textual culture, in turn, has benefited more from Arabic than from any other language except Greek. However, processes of reception were much stronger in the field of scholarly works than in the field of literature proper.

AbstractThis chapter discusses lessons learned engaging my graduate students in education policy analysis at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in designing climate change education curricula in partnership with educational institutions around the world. Studying those programs developed by my students, I draw out seven cross-cutting themes about what such an approach yields for students, for the educational institutions they partnered with and for my own institution, while drawing parallels between those curricula and the graduate course in comparative education policy analysis in which these curricula were developed. In addressing those themes the chapter revisits some of the central arguments presented in the introductory chapter about the urgency and the challenges of enhancing the effectiveness of climate change education, and some of the key conclusions of critical reviews of the literature on education and climate change about the limitation of existing approaches to the subject. Those themes are: Educating students to address climate change is about engaging them in active problem solving, not contemplation. While learning from doing is valuable, to advance the field of climate change education, it is necessary to conceptualize and theorize practice. The need to think broadly about learning outcomes in climate change education The power of contextually situated learning A Signature project-based pedagogy to Change Climate through Education Augmenting the capacity for climate change education among teachers and schools The limitations of infusing climate change education in existing courses The chapter concludes examining some blind spots in the climate change curricula presented in the book and drawing parallels between the education response to the COVID-19 Pandemic of 2020 and the education response to Climate Change.

Abstract:
A new philosophical system of thinking and modern original poetics and aesthetics at the turn of the century was marked by the appearance of poets such as S. Baudelaire or P. Verlaine, who formed the theoretical platform of symbolism with a breakthrough into the mysterious subconscious. The modern cultural-psychological type of sensuality, which was formed at the end of the 19th century, is marked by mystical apocalyptic experiences and melancholy, the search for God and the aesthetics of suffering. M. Voronyi and G. Chuprynka were bright representatives of their time, so we find a lot in common in their worldview and creative work, in particular, regarding Doloric poetics, motives of suffering and symbols of tears. Therefore, their poetic work deserves careful consideration through the prism of Dolorism, since such motifs are dominant in the works of these representatives of early Ukrainian modernism. On the other hand, in Ukrainian literary studies, we do not have separate studies devoted to Doloric aesthetics and the motif of suffering. The purpose of the article is a thorough and purposeful analysis of the Doloric poetics of the lyrics of M. Voronyi and G. Chuprynka through the prism of the historical-literary process of the beginning of the 20th century. and taking into account the ideological and aesthetic views and extraordinary personality of the artists. The task is to find out the origins of the motifs of suffering, longing, pain, to highlight the corresponding doloric imagery in poetry, in particular the image of tears. A set of research methods is used in the methodology for successful implementation of the assigned tasks. Comparative analysis made it possible to single out common views, creative principles, Doloric motives and images of G. Chuprynka and M. Voronyi. The typological method made it possible to explain the similarity of aesthetic phenomena by the conditions of social and literary development, typological convergences of creativity. The biographical method was useful for examining the history of the creative individuality of artists, explaining the nuances of Doloric themes and images. The psychological method made it possible to more adequately decode the inner world of the artist. The results of the research are an in-depth analysis of the poetic work of M. Voronyi and G. Chuprynka, based on a new philosophical system of thinking and oriented to the modern artistic trend of the turn of the century with original poetics and aesthetics, with a breakthrough into the mysterious subconscious. It has been determined that dolorism in the poetry of both artists is a continuation of the folklore tradition of the genre of laments, trenos and laments in baroque literature, the genre of elegy. Common to both poets is the symbolic load of the image of the heart and the reason for its appearance – following the slogans of modern art. Tests and suffering as components of the image of a traveler in the works of G. Chuprynka and M. Voronyi are considered. It has been found that the ideological and philosophical basis of the motif of suffering in the lyrics of G. Chuprynka are Verlaine motifs, but with the victory of the life-affirming principle as a result of the struggle throughout the creative work of "motifs of decay" and living motifs. M. Voronyi focused on A. Schopenhauer, and also developed the Hegelian dialectic of subject and object, but he also selectively assimilated pessimistic reflections.

This book examines the evidence on the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of health promotion policies and projects, with particular emphasis on the UK. As an introduction, this chapter clarifies the key concepts in the health promotion literature such as ‘new public health’, civil society, poverty and empowerment. It first considers the potentially disputed assumption that ‘health’ is an unequivocal concept before discussing the social determinants of health, the emergence of a ‘new public health’ in the UK that consists of health promotion as a model of health policy, and the role of civil society in health promotion. It also explains what poverty is, the impact of public health and health promotion interventions, the purpose of health promotion, and motives for improving people's health (such as empowerment, charity, economics). Finally, it reflects on the future for health promotion.

Abstract:
Eros is one of the main themes of world literature. The theory of love, dialectically expounded by Plato in The Banquet, had a great influence on all European cultures, especially on morality, fiction, and fine arts. The experience of world literature confirms Plato’s theory, including the poetry of Virgil, his works «Bucolic», «Georgica» and «Aeneid». The purpose of the paper is to identify the characteristic features of the mythology of Eros in the works of Virgil, to clarify the nature of the eternal relevance of Plato’s philosophical discovery of earthly love and heavenly love, his vitality in literary works. Methodology. The choice of methods is determined by the peculiarities of the scientific problems of the topic, the solution of which is based on the selection, systematization, comparison, and textual analysis of the relevant material. The main method of research is comparative-historical with genetic and contact approaches, which are in the direct or indirect dialogue of Virgil with other authors. The psychological method was used to know the inner world of the artist, and his author’s interpretation of the mythology of Eros. Results of the survey. Objectively substantiated results are obtained, structural, thematic, and ideological characteristics of Eros mythology are systematized in their interrelation as a complex phenomenon during a certain period in Virgil’s poetry, and established ideas about the mythopoetic paradigm in ancient literature are developed. Plato’s teachings on Eros, its two stages – lower (Earthly love) and higher (Heavenly love) actualize the works of Virgil: «Bucolics», «Georgics», «Aeneid». Рractical implications and value. The practical significance of the work and its value are determined by the possibility of using it in the course of lectures at higher educational institutions. The same results can be taken into account when writing monographs, textbooks, and manuals, in the development of lectures, courses, and special courses on the history of foreign literature. In the Bucolics, Virgil raises the issue of the harmony of man and nature associated with the beauty of Eros. Virgil’s «Bucolics» testify to the complex inner world of man, to the dissonances of his soul, tired of the big city. Rural themes, full of beauty and love of life with all the colors of the Italian land, with the poet’s favorite evening – the constant motifs of the idyllic world of Virgil, which encourages love. In the Georgics, Virgil considers four themes: love, renunciation, death, and rebirth, developing Plato’s theory of the lower and higher levels of Eros – earthly and heavenly love. Virgil denies earthly love. He focuses on libido sexual – sexual desire as the lower stage of Eros. Virgil condemns not only carnal love but also all passion. The vanity of horses rushing to the finish line is no different from human vanity. An example of renunciation of love and all passion is the bee kingdom in Book IV «Georgik». Dido’s tragic love for Aeneas began with libido. Virgil equates the queen’s love affair with illness, a terrible element, a catastrophe. The spirit of great tragedy hovers throughout the fourth book of the Aeneid. Sympathizing with Dido, Virgil condemns her love for Aeneas as a destructive, destructive force, a mad shawl of love passion. However, the poet does not deny purified, that is, ideal love in the Platonic sense. It begins with love for the native land, for beauty, and reigns in all his works. It is love for nature, which permeates the artistic world of the poet, for native lares and penates, love for parents and paternal and maternal love, a mutual friendship between kindred spirits, and finally – love for all things: trees, celestial bodies, space life. Universal love dominates all the works of Virgil.

Abstract:
Theme in a personal narrative conveys the narrator’s value orientations (what the person values, is motivated by, needs, or believes is important in an event) but not whether the event turns out well (tone does that). Three great themes in both literature and life stories are agency, communion, and growth. Themes of eudaimonic growth are central to the transformative self. Growth themes come in various, overlapping forms, notably agentic, communal, reflective, and experiential forms. Growth themes and growthy tones work together to convey not only the value orientation of growth but also the value fulfillment or attainment of eudaimonic growth, experienced as a sense of meaningfulness. Growth themes link actions to motives and to mechanisms of development, which may be why growth themes are powerful predictors of separate measures of happiness, love, wisdom, and growth, regardless of the type of event.

Abstract:
In the literature of the last decade, new motives have appeared, which form “value centers” in the “ideological outlook” of modernity, to use the words by M. Bakhtin. They define the problems of modern Russian literature. But turning to them does not show acquisitions, but rather an intensive search, the need for which is great. Literature as a sphere of social consciousness records the dramatic lack of certain existential landmarks of modern man. The article contains an attempt to identify some of these value centers that can provide modern man with social and ontological guidelines. Among them are the problem of time, historical themes, nostalgia, and the search for the image of a modern leader.

Abstract:
The construction industry is long perceived as physically demanding, and less consideration has been given to the mental well-being of the construction workers. The increasing number of mental health concerns urges the research to expand their focus from work health, safety and accident prevention to the “physio-social effects” on workers’ well-being. Hence, this research aims to explore the effect of work-related factors on the mental well-being of male and female construction workers. After a thorough literature review to set the background, a qualitative research approach was adopted as the methodology. Sixteen participants across two cases were interviewed, and the sample is an equal representation of male and female construction workers in Australia. Factors affecting mental well-being are recognised under five themes through the content analysis of the case study results, including the machoism characteristics of the industry culture; the high-risk and fast-paced work environment; financial stability and financial literacy; uneven workload and unconventionally long working hours; and the involvement of the employer’s management in reassuring the mental well-being. The key implication is that the same inherent machismo cultural characteristics of the Australian construction industry distinctly affect the mental well-being of male and female construction workers. The unpredictability of casual and contract-based appointments causes low job security and financial stability among male workers leading to financial stress. The current study emphasises that a one-stop approach to address the mental health issues of male and female construction workers is ineffective and proposes further in-depth research under the emerged themes of the research.

Abstract:
As money laundering is a highly threatening and dangerous activity, its damage is only discussed when the consequences of these illegal activities become public, thus such kinds of investigations are particularly relevant. By fol-lowing public anti-money laundering (AML) directives and internal financial legislation of specific countries, it is pos-sible to improve any money laundering situation, anticipate potential risks and avoid various financial downturns. This paper examines the evolution of money laundering, the motives behind them, the potential economic consequences and highlights the need to suppress these activities to promote higher standards of AML, which could have a posi-tive impact on the countries’ economies. In the empirical part, according to the main macroeconomic indicators, 10 Northern European countries are analysed and the effectiveness of anti-money laundering processes, are identified. The analysis is made using several research steps, obtained results are compared and discussed. Methods used: scientific literature analysis, comparative analysis, data systematization, statistical data analysis, COPRAS, and cluster analysis. Conclusions and future research areas are mentioned.

Abstract:
There have been changes in how arts and skills are taught in teacher education that, among other things, have sought to strengthen the dialogue between theory and practice. To examine these goal-orientated changes, it is necessary to take an in-depth view of the situation after they have taken place, and thus to justify future-orientated perspectives. The aim of this study was to find out how theory and practice appear in the writings of student teachers after they had completed Arts and Skills in Education courses, which are part of multidisciplinary studies leading to the qualification of a primary school teacher. Do theory and practice remain separate from each other, are they extremes of each other or is there a dialogue between them, and what is the nature of this dialogue? The research material consisted of the students’ writings at the end of their final Arts and Skills in Education course. Writings were requested via e-form. The research material was approached according to the research literature on the relationship between theory and practice. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. The students’ views on theory and practice were coded into three themes: (1) no relationship between theory and practice, (2) a comparative relationship between theory and practice and (3) a dialogical relationship between theory and practice. These themes made it possible to distinguish the extent to which and how students link theory to practice, or vice versa. The research findings led the researchers to reflect on the development of teacher education and, in particular, arts and skills courses.

Abstract:
The works of Maxim Bogdanovich (1891-1917) are included in the golden fund of Belarusian literature, of which he is a classic. One of the best translators of his poetic lyrics into Russian was B. S. Burshtyn (pseudonym - “Irinin”) (1893-1964), who lived and worked in Smolensk for about twenty years. A comparative analysis of the themes, artistic images, tropes, versification features of the works of Maxim Bogdanovich translated by Boris Irinin with the author’s texts allows us to conclude that the translator’s skill is high. Despite the fact that Irinin himself was a poet, he treated the original source with great respect and did not try to “improve” it. It was important for him to convey the depth of the meaning of the work, the originality of the images, and also to try to preserve the form, first of all, the poetic meter.

Abstract:
The years of World War II know many examples of various intelligence / counterintelligence operations in their complexity and execution. However, the closely related topic of supervision and opposition to the activities of pro-German and pro-Japanese public organizations in the United States is quite little studied in domestic historiography. Within the framework of this article, several specific examples examined how federal agents acted in relation to public organizations of the German diaspora ("Bund"), associations sympathetic to Germany ("Christian Front") and Japanese organizations in the United States ("Heimusha Kai" and others). These examples show the features and major shortcomings of the FBI's work in these areas, and also make it clear how the US intelligence services acted in the conditions of war and the existing judicial system in America, as well as how much the motives of the political struggle in the country influenced the activities to ensure internal security. The considered examples allow us to draw a conclusion that in addition to the counterintelligence motives dictated by the war, the FBI's activities in this direction had a pronounced political color and were associated with the struggle of the presidential administration F. D. Roosevelt with criticism "on the right." However, the results of the investigations of the agents did not stand the test of the trial and, with the exception of cases related to the activity of Japanese organizations in the United States, ended in acquittals. Also, the role of the press in these cases is noteworthy. The media for the most part worked to substantiate the activities of the Bureau and its agents. Methodologically, the study relies on the principles of historicism, problem-chronological method and methods of historical comparative studies. The article is based on archival materials from the Bureau and literature on the topic of research.

Hammad, Ali, and Mohamed Moustafa. Seismic Behavior of Special Concentric Braced Frames under Short- and Long-Duration Ground Motions. Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center, University of California, Berkeley, CA, December 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.55461/zont9308.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past decade, several long-duration subduction earthquakes took place in different locations around the world, e.g., Chile in 2010, Japan in 2011, China in 2008, and Indonesia in 2004. Recent research has revealed that long-duration, large-magnitude earthquakes may occur along the Cascadia subduction zone of the Pacific Northwest Coast of the U.S. The duration of an earthquake often affects the response of structures. Current seismic design specifications mostly use response spectra to identify the hazard and do not consider duration effects. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of the effect of the duration of the ground motion on structural performance and its design implications is an important issue. The goal of this study was to investigate how the duration of an earthquake affects the structural response of special concentric braced frames (SCBFs). A comprehensive experimental program and detailed analytical investigations were conducted to understand and quantify the effect of duration on collapse capacity of SCBFs, with the goal of improving seismic design provisions by incorporating these effects. The experimental program included large-scale shake table tests, and the analytical program consisted of pre-test and post-test phases. The pre-test analysis phase performed a sensitivity analysis that used OpenSees models preliminarily calibrated against previous experimental results for different configuration of SCBFs. A tornado-diagram framework was used to rank the influence of the different modeling parameters, e.g., low-cycle fatigue, on the seismic response of SCBFs under short- and long-duration ground motions. Based on the results obtained from the experimental program, these models were revisited for further calibration and validation in the post-test analysis. The experimental program included three large-scale shake-table tests of identical single-story single-bay SCBF with a chevron-brace configuration tested under different ground motions. Two specimens were tested under a set of spectrally-matched short and long-duration ground motions. The third specimen was tested under another long-duration ground motion. All tests started with a 100% scale of the selected ground motions; testing continued with an ever-increasing ground-motion scale until failure occurred, e.g., until both braces ruptured. The shake table tests showed that the duration of the earthquake may lead to premature seismic failure or lower capacities, supporting the initiative to consider duration effects as part of the seismic design provisions. Identical frames failed at different displacements demands because of the damage accumulation associated with the earthquake duration, with about 40% reduction in the displacement capacity of the two specimens tested under long-duration earthquakes versus the short-duration one. Post-test analysis focused first on calibrating an OpenSees model to capture the experimental behavior of the test specimens. The calibration started by matching the initial stiffness and overall global response. Next, the low-cycle fatigue parameters were fine-tuned to properly capture the experimental local behavior, i.e., brace buckling and rupture. The post-test analysis showed that the input for the low-cycle fatigue models currently available in the literature does not reflect the observed experimental results. New values for the fatigue parameters are suggested herein based on the results of the three shake-table tests. The calibrated model was then used to conduct incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) using 44 pairs of spectrally-matched short- and long-duration ground motions. To compare the effect of the duration of ground motion, this analysis aimed at incorporating ground-motion variability for more generalized observations and developing collapse fragility curves using different intensity measures (IMs). The difference in the median fragility was found to be 45% in the drift capacity at failure and about 10% in the spectral acceleration (Sa). Using regression analysis, the obtained drift capacity from analysis was found to be reduced by about 8% on average for every additional 10 sec in the duration of the ground motion. The last stage of this study extended the calibrated model to SCBF archetype buildings to study the effect of the duration of ground motion on full-sized structures. Two buildings were studied: a three-story and nine-story build that resembled the original SAC buildings but were modified with SCBFs as lateral support system instead of moment resisting frames. Two planer frames were adopted from the two buildings and used for the analysis. The same 44 spectrally-matched pairs previously used in post-test analysis were used to conduct nonlinear time history analysis and study the effect of duration. All the ground motions were scaled to two hazard levels for the deterministic time history analysis: 10% exceedance in 50 years and 2% exceedance in 50 years. All analysis results were interpreted in a comparative way to isolate the effect of duration, which was the main variable in the ground-motion pairs. In general, the results showed that the analyzed SCBFs experienced higher drift values under the long-duration suite of ground motions, and, in turn, a larger percentage of fractured braces under long-duration cases. The archetype SCBFs analysis provided similar conclusions on duration effects as the experimental and numerical results on the single-story single-bay frame.
