Abstract:
This paper examines China's peanut industry's competitiveness under the framework of international trade by appliying comparative statics and emperical method. Specifically, datas including price, market share, competitiveness index and revealed comarative adavantage index are measured in the estimation. The main conclusion is that China's peanut production still has an edge, albeit receding, over that of some other countries like the U.S., India, and Argentina. The authors also augure that in order to improve the competitiveness of the peanut industry, one could facilitate the export practice

Gravity equations have been widely used to infer trade flow effects of various institutional arrangements. We show that estimated gravity equations do not have a theoretical foundation. This implies both that estimation suffers from omitted variables bias and that comparative statics analysis is unfounded. We develop a method that (i) consistently and efficiently estimates a theoretical gravity equation and (ii) correctly calculates the comparative statics of trade frictions. We apply the method to solve the famous McCallum border puzzle. Applying our method, we find that national borders redu

We propose a novel analytic approach for the comparative statics analysis of operations management problems on the capacity investment decision and the influenza (flu) vaccine composition decision. Our approach involves exploiting the properties of the underlying mathematical models, and linking those properties to the concept of stochastic orders relationship. The use of stochastic orders allows us to establish our main results without restriction to a specific distribution. A major strength of our approach is that it is "scalable," i.e., it applies to capacity investment decision prob

As the HIV-positive population ages, managing non-AIDS-related comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease (CVD) complicates HIV care. Effectively treating risk factors for CVD will help reduce its burden in the HIV-infected population. However, the evidence base for the efficacy of statins as lipid-lowering therapies in HIV-infected patients has yet to be synthesized. Most trials do not compare statins directly to each other. In the absence of head-to-head evidence, the relative treatment effects of different statins can be indirectly obtained through a network meta-analysis (NMA). This NMA

Cable sag can have significant effects on the cable length computation in a cable-suspended robot and this is more pronounced in large-scale outdoor systems. This requires modeling the cable as a catenary instead of an approximated straight-line model. Furthermore, when there is actuation redundancy involved, the modeling and simulation of the system becomes much more complex, requiring optimizing routines to solve the problem. A cable-sag-compensated (catenary) model was implemented in simulation for an example large outdoor cable-suspended robot system to solve the coupled kinematics and sta

Abstract In this paper different approaches in seismic design are investigated. Commonly used static analysis is compared with two different cases of harmonic analysis. The static analysis is based on a design response spectra. In the harmonic analysis, case 1, the loading is in the form of acceleration applied to the mass, for case 2, the loading is in the form of applied displacements to the supports. A typical expansion pipe unit is analysed with all three methods. It is shown that standard procedures can lead to a conservative design and prevent the optimization of the results. An optimum
